Angelically yours Someone asked me the other day about angels - what they are, why we believe in them. How appropriate as the Michaelmas daisies bloom in our gardens and the feast of Michael and All Angels approaches on 29th September. Now angels are ‘in’: pictures and knick-knacks abound in gift shops and you can buy books telling you how to make contact with your very own guardian angel. Angels are big business but in the Bible they are rather an integral part of the community of God’s universe, generally at work in a different dimension to ours which we sometimes call ‘heaven’, but occasionally encountered in our own dimension on earth. Some even have names, such as Michael and Gabriel (or Raphael whom you can find in one of the stained glass windows in our church, holding a big fish but that’s a story for another time). Yet because of all the ornaments and Christmas cards, it is easy to think of angels as sweet, golden-haired creatures, dressed in white with tinsel haloes and fairy wings. But take a look at Gauguin’s Vision of the Sermon (Jacob Wrestling with the Angel) or Chagall’s angels or Burne-Jones’ stained glass angels in Birmingham Cathedral with their wings of flaming crimson; read the apocalyptic visions of Daniel in the Old Testament or John in Revelation at the end of the New and you may get a sense of the unearthly power and splendour of the angels and realise why Mary, the Christmas shepherds and many others in the Biblical accounts were so terrified and awestruck when confronted by them. Angels are not dolls to be stuck on the top of a Christmas tree but heavenly beings, used to dwelling in the presence of God. Messengers So what actually are they and what rôle do they fulfil? The word ‘angel’ comes from the Greek for ‘messenger’. This is what the angels are, God’s messengers. We see this often in the Bible, most famously when Gabriel comes to the Virgin Mary and announces the birth of Jesus or when the shepherds watching their flocks by night are met by a ‘heavenly host’. Very often God chooses human beings to be his messengers. But just occasionally, perhaps when the message is so important it cannot risk human fallibility, he sends a heavenly messenger, who cannot be ignored, disbelieved or rebuffed. The message may be expressing a great promise or heralding a significant event or announcing judgement such as the seven great angels of Revelation. Stone angel at the chancel arch in Christ Church Links between heaven and earth Angels, then, are a link between heaven and earth as in Jacob’s famous dream, in the Old Testament. He sees a ladder reaching up to heaven and the angels of God ascending and descending upon it, as God for the first time
passes on to him the ancient promise made with Abraham and Isaac that they would be specially blessed by God, given land and prosperity and countless descendants, becoming the source of blessing for all nations and living as God’s people. Glorifying God Angels encourage us to follow them into the heavenly realms and receive that blessing for ourselves and one of the ways in which we can do that is through our worship. As we pray at every communion service: “Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, forever praising you”. One of the main tasks or raisons d’être of the angels is to praise God. It is said that the worship in heaven is unceasing so whenever we worship - be it in music, word, dance, art or silence - we join with the angels and find our own raison d’être in glorifying God. We are also reminded that this earth and this earthly life is not the sum total of reality, this is not all there is: there are other realities, other dimensions into which the angels can lead us when life here becomes tough. Protecting That is another aspect of the angels’ role in God’s relationship with us: protection and guardianship. Whether we each have our own guardian angel is purely speculative but God does send his angels to protect and watch over us, to help us, as they did Jesus in his forty days in the wilderness, and we can pray for their protection to surround us at times when we feel most vulnerable or when we are anxious about someone else who is at risk. They are warriors in the great spiritual battle, as we read in the Bible, but warriors who are assured of victory through Christ and they are therefore an encouragement to us that our own personal battles can also end in triumph if we, like they, trust in him and draw on him for strength and power. Lady Chapel window in Christ Church depicting the archangel Raphael Reaching out to us Yes, angels are big business - big business for us, for be it as messengers of promise or judgement, as worshippers, warriors or guardians, they remind us of God’s glory and power, ever praising him and drawing us into their worship. They remind us of the essential nature of God: that God is constantly in community, in relationship with others on earth as in heaven. And they remind us most of all of God’s inexhaustible desire to be in relationship with us, always finding ways to reach out to us: to help, to encourage, to warn, to inspire. That is why the feast of Michael and All Angels has its place in our church calendar and why we should not simply relegate angels to the shelves of the gift shops or the branches of our Christmas trees. If you would like to discuss anything in this letter, or just to have a chat over a cup of coffee, do get in touch; I'd love to hear from you, Sally. The Revd. Sally Davies. CHRIST CHURCH NEWS Private prayer and public worship with our village church Many people have said how much they have appreciated the church being open for personal prayer and reflection and just as a peaceful space. It has also been a great joy to gather again for Sunday worship on three Sundays in July and one in August. Our numbers are strictly limited by the COVID guidelines and we have no idea whether or when these will change in the future so, after taking a break for most of August, when we resume a weekly Sunday 10am service on September 6th, we will require those who wish to attend to register with the vicar (vicar@shamleygreen.net or 892030) by 12 noon the previous Thursday. We will update details of this, and of when our children’s and young people’s activities may be able to resume, via our website and the vicar’s weekly newsletter We will also continue to provide a weekly act of worship online via YouTube (link also available on our website) together with readings and reflections available to download for those who are unable to attend the church services. Church business We will soon be holding our annual meetings when we will need to elect new churchwardens and new members of our Parochial Church Council. Before lockdown, we had started some great new initiatives for young families – a Parent, Baby and Toddler Group and Messy Church services – which we look forward to resuming and developing further. The redecoration of our Church Hall means we will also be able to make more extensive use of it, as well as offering it for hire to local groups and businesses. The lockdown has opened up opportunities for considering and developing the way we worship, communicate with each other and look after one another. There are, therefore, exciting times ahead. If you would like to be a part of all that and have gifts and skills to offer, please contact the vicar, Sally (vicar@shamleygreen.net; 892030). There are many different roles and opportunities for service, learning and fellowship and we would love to hear from you. What happened next? Autumn discussion groups We will be meeting as usual fortnightly with the choice of a daytime group on Monday mornings at 10am or an evening group on Thursdays at 7pm. Most people are familiar with the execution of Jesus Christ and his subsequent resurrection from death which we celebrate at Easter.
However, do you know what happened next? This is the subject of the book of the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament. Using material by renowned and accessible theologian Tom Wright, we will be exploring how our Church came into being and how the first Christians dealt with situations of intense change, uncertainty, disorientation and danger – very relevant to our own times. The Monday group will be meeting in the Jubilee Room at church if possible (by Zoom if not) on September 14th & 28th, October 12th, November 2nd, 16th & 30th; contact Sally Davies 892030 for further information. The Thursday group begin with supper (if this is possible within the COVID guidelines) on September 3rd, then continue on September 17th & 24th, October 8th & 22nd and November 5th. Details of venue to be confirmed; contact Alison Harding 893457 for further information. From the registers Funeral: we gave thanks for the life of Carol Wrixen on 3rd August and of Bob Russell on 4th August. Donations to the church As with many other organisations, charities and businesses, our income has suffered during the this time. A big thank you to all our donors who have continued to support us with regular and one-off donations. If you would like to support us, you can make one-off contributions via our website www.shamleygreen.net or direct to our Shamley Green PCC Donations Account :Account No. 30638712 Sort Code 60-06-19. If you would like to know how you can support our parish church through regular giving by standing order, through a legacy or how to increase the value of your donation by Gift Aid please contact our Treasurer Tony Robinson (01483 229141, tonyandmandy@btinternet,com), our Legacy Officer Joelle Tamraz (legacies@shamleygreen.net) or our Planned Giving Officer Nick Russell- Davis (01483 890719,nrusselldavis@compuserve.com). Message from Tess Trewinnard Outgoing Headteacher Wonersh and Shamley Green C of E Primary School As I retire, I just want to thank everyone in the wider community for all your support over the last 10 years. It has certainly been an amazing adventure to have led the school through a period of expansion from infant to primary school and to see the children blossom and grow up Into responsible young people. From the very first days I knew that WSG was a special place. Although the school building was physically run down the warmth of the school community was very real. I came as an interim head and very quickly knew that I wanted to stay. At my interview I described my vision for the school as being like a tree rooted in the love of God, but whose branches would grow and spread, becoming a thing of life and beauty for the whole community. We have so much to be proud of; with our recent excellent SIAMS Inspection and academic results reflecting all the many areas we can celebrate - forest schools, the arts, sport, international links and creativity in a broad and rich curriculum. I think I can honestly say that with the wonderful team at WSG we have created a vibrant and caring community and a centre of educational excellence where every child can excel - a lasting legacy for future generations whose branches reach out into the wider community. Over the years, whether financially in support of projects like roof repair, or through other charitable donations for buying resources, your support to families in need, or volunteering to help in school, the local community have played a significant part in the success of the school. I have always been grateful and in awe of how you have rallied round. During the lockdown even more so, we have appreciated your kindness and care. As Mr Tim Cheesman takes over in September I know you will continue to give the school your ongoing support. Tim has been the Deputy Head at Tillingbourne and has been teaching for over 15 years. He has a young family. Tim has excellent experience and I am sure will lead the school from strength to strength.
I look forward to hearing your news and hope to keep in touch. Thanks a million! Now on to my next adventure! Tess. Journeying May the raindrops fall lightly on your brow, May the soft winds freshen your spirit, May the sunshine brighten your heart, May the burdens of the day rest lightly upon you And may God enfold you in the mantle of his love. (Traditional Gaelic blessing) Message from Tim Cheesman Incoming Headteacher Wonersh and Shamley Green CofE Primary School I am delighted to be able to introduce myself, Tim Cheesman, as the new Headteacher of Wonersh and Shamley Green Church of England Primary School. I take up my post at the beginning of September following the retirement of Tess Trewinnard. I have been the Deputy Headteacher of Tillingbourne Junior School in Chilworth for the past seven years and I have taught in primary schools across Surrey for over seventeen years. I have lived in the county all of my life and know the area well and I enjoy exploring the delights of the Surrey hills whilst out riding my bike. I live with my wife and two children who are currently trying their hardest to persuade us to also add a pet to the household! The staff and I are very much looking forward to welcoming all of the pupils back to school on the 2nd September following the school’s closure in March for so many of our children. The school is a vibrant and caring place with dedicated staff and talented children. I hope to strengthen and build on the school’s strong Christian values and develop the excellent community links with the church and its parish. I look forward to getting to know and working alongside members of the local community; Sally has already made me feel very welcome. I wish Tess all the very best in her retirement and I hope to lead the school with the same dedication and compassion as she has shown over the last ten years. 6 Shamley Green Parish Magazine September 2020
Shamley Green History Society We greatly regret that in common with the other Village History Societies in the area we have had to cancel all talks up until Christmas. However, Chairman Michael has it in mind to do a low-key Meander around the Green, for the benefit of newcomers only for the moment depending on numbers, to look at its varied properties, wartime history, etc. The following message is from Michael: ‘I propose to lead a walk on SATURDAY 12th SEPTEMBER, starting from the bus stop outside the village shop at 2.30 p.m. If you would like to participate please e-mail the Hon. Secretary Valerie Esplen at vesplen@talktalk.net to book a place, giving your full name and telephone number to comply with Government Regulations, or put a note in the front door of my house, Manelhe, Sweetwater Lane, on Saturday 5th September. As usual the walk is open to non-members. Most members of the History Society and many other villagers have had previous opportunities to do this walk , the last occasion being in July 2019. Distance ¾ mile, time duration approx.. 1 ½ hours. In the event of bad weather or changed situation to regulations participants will be contacted about postponement or cancellation. Keep safe; carry a water bottle, wear masks when in close proximity. Enjoy the summer weather. M.H.’ Villages Wednesday Club AGM The Villages Wednesday Club will be holding its AGM at 7.30pm on Tuesday 20th October. The venue is to be decided depending on Covid19 restrictions in place at the time. If you are interested in attending please contact jane@fourvillages.co.uk for details and to be kept updated.

Arbuthnot Hall Update The Annual General Meeting of the Arbuthnot Hall was scheduled for the 29th April. It could not take place as shutdown had been in place since the 23rd March. We will aim to hold the next AGM on a similar date in 2021. Our accounts for the year ending 28th February 2020 show a surplus of £23 after new hall costs. The financial situation for the current year is uncertain, but we hope to be close to a break even figure. If you would like to see a copy of the accounts please email the Hall Treasurer John Willis at treasurer@arbuthnot.org.uk. Following closure of the hall, we were approached by Ian Loynes with a view of setting up a Fruit & Vegetable stall in the hall car park on three days a week. In deference to the Country Stores and in particular Damien, he was consulted and was prepared to have competition on his doorstep whilst the hall was closed. This was made clear to Ian and a modest rent agreed, the Hall Committee felt this would be a useful service for the community during an unprecedented period when travel and shopping was difficult. On the 13th July Ian decided he would cease trading at the hall and at Wonersh to concentrate on his main business, this was entirely his choice without influence from the committee. We wish him well in the future and thank him for a wonderful selection of produce during the time he was at the Hall. The government allowed Village Halls to reopen on the 4th July provided they maintained Covid 19 guidelines. At about the same time the Cricket Club resumed their junior cricket programme and the seniors their Sunday afternoon matches. Unfortunately because of serious constraints, the size and layout of the hall, pinch points, small toilets, poor ventilation, limitation on households and social distancing only certain small groups would be able to hire the hall. Not withstanding the above, at the time of writing only 25 – 30 people could be accommodated in cinema style in the main hall, and at the time of writing no more than six different households. Consequently every request for bookings will be carefully considered. At the moment the Cricket Club are ensuring players arrive fully changed and bring their own tea, they can only use the lobby and toilets which are thoroughly cleaned after use. The Waverley Borough Council Eastern Planning Meeting was held as a Zoom meeting on Wednesday 29th July. The Chairman presented the Hall’s case. After debate by the Borough Councillors permission was refused on the basis the proposed building would be materially larger than the one it is to replace and no very special circumstances have been put forward to outweigh the harm to the Green Belt, or any other harm. The proposal is therefore contrary to policy RE2 of the local plan 2018 (part1) and the NPPF 2019. The committee were very disappointed at the decision, as they felt they were representing the majority view of the village, who voted for a rebuild. committee members are now considering their future. Tony Hodgson (Chairman AHMC) For & on behalf of the AHMC
Where Angels Fear The village dance was in full swing On that cold autumnal night. The local law was doing his rounds Astride a gleaming motor bike, With Gaiters, boots and corker hat, And covered over with a heavy mac As the armour of an ancient knight. By the telephone box making his point, Waiting for any emergency calls, And shuddered when he answered the phone, There's a drunk down at the local hall. He knew at once where the trouble came, From the a giant of a man whose only fame, Was the delight of being involved in a brawl. The man by trade a lumberjack, All hair and brawn with a temper to match And when he confronted that hulking brute, Who told all around he eats policemen for fun But shackled in gear and heavy boots, The copper knew his time had come, He was the law - he could not run With jitsu chops the giant advanced, And the fearful copper stood his ground, When in his mind there flashed a chance "You were a commando once I'll be bound", This stopped the man in drunken doubt, And towering over the policeman's hat, " I was" he growled, " As you'll find out" "So was I", said the law with tact, And gave his unit and other facts, With those few words the day was saved, As though a magic wand had waved, For round his back came a massive arm, And the giant who meant to do much harm, Was an instant friend with drunken charm. 12 Shamley Green Parish Magazine September 2020
Trying not to quiver or shake, He talked the man into a calmer state, And the expectant crowd never saw, Bits of policeman all over the floor, Or the utter relief as he made for the door, For he knew as he mounted his motor bike, Lady luck was at his side that night. Nightlife This is the tale of a fox and a cat, and a motor bike cop in a corker hat Who patrolled the quiet lanes serene Of a quaint little place called Shamley Green. The copper’s cat walked tall and light, He slept all day and fought all night, And when the cop patrolled the village street, The big cat stalked his garden beat. Now a hungry fox on a dustbin date, Trespassed through the policeman’s gate Which didn’t suit the big black tom Who fought but lost all ripped and torn. The following night the fox went back, Waiting for his midnight snack, But the cop came home on his motor bike, And caught that fox in his light. His gaitered boot in a perfect arc Kicked that beast right on the mark. A flying fox leapt up the street, Landing every twenty feet. The policeman smiled as he parked his bike, And thought, “Every copper has his night”, While haunting the Green without any choice Is a puzzled fox with a peculiar voice. (Obviously this rather brutal solution is not recommended! Ed.) These poems were written by the late John F Buxton who was the Village Policeman in 1958. See the August edition of the magazine for more details of his life. If anyone remembers the author, do please contact the editor. Contributed by Diana Haddon

Shamley Green Cricket Following the Government decision and detailed guidance for the ECB, Shamley Green cricket matches resumed on 12 July with a narrow loss to Weybridge and on 19 July a narrow victory over Leatherhead. The remainder of the fixture list is: 23 August - Merrow (H) 30 August - Bank of England (Away) We will try to get some extra fixtures for September and possibly a Saturday or two in August. The Young Cricketer leagues have been abandoned for this year but we expect friendlies to be played on the Green on Sunday mornings through until about the end of August. Time for a Smile A new boy turned up at a Sunday Club and the leader asked him a few questions to break the ice and ended with asking him what his father did. He's a magician, sir," said the boy. "How interesting,” said the leader, “What's his favourite trick - what is he is he really very good at doing?" The boy replied, "He’s very good at sawing people in half." The leader was impressed. “Now tell me something more about yourself, do you have any brothers and sisters?” asked the teacher. “Yes sir,” replied Johnny, I have one brother and two half sisters.” A man running a little behind schedule arrived at a church film evening and, in the semi darkness, he managed to find a seat. As his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he was surprised to see a dog sitting beside its master in the row ahead, intently watching the film. It even seemed to be enjoying the film, wagging its tail in the happy bits, drooping its ears at the sad bits, and hiding its eyes with its paws at the scary bits. At the end the man approached the dog's owner, "Wow, I’m amazed at how your dog really seemed to enjoy the film" The owner replied, “Yes, I can't believe it myself, because he hated the book." 16 Shamley Green Parish Magazine September 2020

The Letter A line to say I'm still alive and that I'm not yet dead! But I'm getting more forgetful And mixed up in my head. I'm used to my arthritis To my dentures I'm resigned I can manage my bifocals But how I miss my mind. Sometimes I can't remember When I'm standing by the stair If I'm going down for something Or I've just come down from there. And when I stand before the fridge My mind is full of doubt Have I just put some food away Or come to get it out? I go in to the other room And when I get in there, what I want to know is why I've come? Already I've forgot! Now I'm standing by the post box and my face is ruby red For instead of posting it to you I've opened it instead!! Contributed by Michael Harding 24 Shamley Green Parish Magazine September 2020
