4 NEWS New Education room for Westcott CE School The pupils of Westcott CE School have been lucky enough to receive a fantastic addition to their school courtesy of Green Retreats. Green Retreats on Westcott Venture Park have launched their new showroom and generously donated an amazing Pinnacle Garden Room from their old showroom to the school. Mr Grace, Headteacher at Westcott CE School said “Our new Education Room gives our school a wonderful space for pupils to work in small groups or receive additional input from school staff. The building itself comes with a television, built in speakers, bi-fold doors and underfloor heating. The children are all very excited to use it and we thank Green Retreats for their continued support of their local school”. Westcott CE School is a small, friendly village primary school in the village of Westcott just outside Waddesdon. It has spaces available in Nursery and Reception Classes in September 2018, please contact the school on 01296 651360 or office@westcott.bucks.sch.uk to arrange a visit to the school. The Bernwode Bus – Drivers Wanted !!! In order for the service to expand we need some more volunteer drivers who can help us to keep the bus running to more areas and more days of the week. We need drivers who can drive as little or as much as you like... Why not come and have a no obligation test drive to see if you like it and can help support this great cause. Please call Ashley on 07977 401548 for more details
NEWS 5 The Passing of Percy . . . “Percy” the ”Waddesdon Peacock” was originally part of a pair. It is not entirely clear how they came to reside in Waddesdon but became “mini stars” overnight Unfortunately his partner passed away, but Percy lived on. He has been a familiar sight around Waddesdon for many years, often seen walking up and down the High Street on the pavement, in Wood Street, Frederick Street and various other roads in and around the village. He was considered by many as a village institution, visiting back gardens on a daily basis waiting to be fed. His distinctive call could be frequently heard, becoming much louder when he was lonely trying to find his long lost mate. Sadly in early May, Percy himself passed away, so our iconic feathered friend has moved onto pastures new. Thank you Percy for being such a character and entertainment to us all. and back by popular demand, bring your teddy to the Teddy Zip wire from the church tower!
6 WADDESDON PARISH COUNCIL Parish Council News June 2018 Thank you to everyone who attended the Annual Parish Meeting. It was great to hear updates from a variety of organisations and hear about positive community activities. If you want to give a report next year or have a display, please let the Clerk know. This month has been busy as we start to get on top of the grass cutting and tidying of the village in preparation for the Best Kept Village Competition. Judging takes place during June & July. We are purchasing a second defibrillator which will be installed at the Sports Hub shortly. Training will be arranged - details to be confirmed. It is with great sadness that we heard the news of Melvyn Goodway's death. He was a Councillor and Chairman for several years and will be missed by all. Dates for your diaries: Monthly Parish Council meetings, 7.30pm in the Business Hub: 20th June, 18th July - there is no meeting planned for August What is an Annual Parish Meeting? The Annual Parish Meeting is not a council meeting. It is a meeting of the parish or town electors taking place between 1 March and 1 June. Electors can contribute to the agenda and in practice these meetings often celebrate local activities and debate current issues in the community. The Parish Council Chairman, if present, will chair the meeting. Parish Council Surgeries (in the Business Hub, Waddesdon Hall) Surgeries will continue on an ad-hoc basis as we try to vary days and times to enable residents more opportunities to attend. Information will be posted on our noticeboard and website once planned. WESTCOTT PARISH COUNCIL 7 The Annual Meeting of the Council took place on 8th May when Cllr. Mrs. Sue Pusey was re-elected as Chairman of the Council and Cllr.Tony Wilkinson as Vice-Chairman. The Council was pleased to support the recent work of the Ramblers' Association on the parish's footpaths and especially for the new kissing gate at the start of the footpath by Station House. Cllr. Paul Irwin is to set up a meeting to discuss parking issues around the School and the Parish Council will be involved in this. The annual accounts for 2017/18 had been subject to a clear internal audit and were agreed and approved by the Council. They will now be subject to an external audit (see parish notice board for details). It was agreed that the Council will meet in 2018 on 19th June, 31st July. 11th September, 23rd October and 4th December. The Annual Parish Meeting was held on 15th May when a good number of local residents attended. A presentation was given by John Grimshaw on the Waddesdon Greenway and the possible link to it with a cycleway from Westcott .There were a number of interested questions on this and Cllr. Paul Irwin will be looking to see if this suggestion can be taken forward. Another presentation was given by BCC on plans for the proposed new roundabout at the A41 junction.Whilst the scheme was well received, a number of questions were put concerning details such as the position of the bus stops, pedestrian crossing points, lighting, speed limits etc.,These were taken away for consideration.Work is expected to be complete by the end of summer. Following the announcement in the last newsletter, there were no applications to fill the vacancy for a member of the Council and so the date has been extended. Applications are now required by 15th June. For more information, please contact the Clerk, details below. June sees the first of our summer outings. To tie in with the WI's 'Healthy Living Week' we will be visiting a garden in Cuddington which includes large kitchen and ornamental gardens. We will need to know numbers in advance so please let us know no later than Sunday 3 June if you would like to join us. Council Members I am happy to report that, even though we are not a large Parish, we currently have eight members with just one outstanding vacancy and have maintained a fair degree of continuity among the majority of Councillors for several years now. I would also like to urge Parishioners to put themselves forward to facilitate a continued full quota of individuals serving this community. Support for local organisations Our healthy financial position has enabled the Council to continue in 2017/18 to provide financial assistance to: Waddesdon Horticultural Society Waddesdon Wednesday Club Waddesdon Guides Waddesdon Hall The Council also made donations to the Cricket Club for various community events and services such as: Waddesdon Weekender Parish Council Events/Seasonal Activities During the past twelve months, the Council has organised &/or sponsored the following events and activities: Santa's Grotto and Float - During the day just shy of 100 children (and parents!) came to see Santa in his magical grotto. Later on, even more had the opportunity to see Santa as he toured the village. Over 60s Christmas Party. Clean-up days in preparation for the Best Kept Village Competition Remembrance Service Publicity/Information The Council website (www.waddesdonparichcouncil.gov.uk) continues to be updated on a regular basis and is well worth a visit for anyone who wants to stay abreast of what's happening. We also keep residents informed through news items and the Village Newsletter, distribution of which, to all households in Waddesdon (The Newsletter can also be found on the Council website.) Finance At the time of writing, the Council's accounts for 2017/18 are yet to be finalised, but interim figures suggest that the budget has been correctly set for the last year and it
WADDESDON PARISH COUNCIL 35 is apparent with the capital investments made during 2016/17 that again; savings will be made again in 2017/18 and beyond. As for 2018/19, the Council set its precept at such a level as to only marginally increase by 4.88% (by £3.22p per year for a Band D property) the Parish Council portion of the council tax. Neighbourhood Plan Having been supported overwhelmingly by the Parish (94% YES vote!) in the Referendum on October 19th; the Waddesdon Neighbourhood Plan was formally 'made' by AVDC. Feasibility Study We commissioned Transport for Buckinghamshire to undertake a feasibility study to assess a number of traffic calming measures throughout the village. A village meeting was held in November 2016 to identify key areas of concern within the village and assist the Parish Council in identifying the scope for the study. After publishing the results of the feasibility study Transport for Buckinghamshire on behalf of the Parish Council received extremely useful feedback from residents. From this feedback and subsequent meetings, we have narrowed down a 'would-like' list that we have asked Transport for Buckinghamshire to review and will present their recommendations to the village in the near future. Details of this will appear on Parish Council website and in the village newsletter. Plans and Priorities for 2018/19 - The extension of the Burial Ground. - Continuing the provision of new car parking facilities. - Considering developments in respect of the sports facilities at the two locations within the village. - Replacing street lights with LED bulbs (long-term cost reductions). Thanks Firstly and above all I wish to pay tribute to Melanie Rose, our clerk. The term 'clerk' gives absolutely no indication of the variety of talents required or the number of tasks to be performed in that role. Again we must acknowledge that thanks to her skills and guidance we are well on the way to achieving Quality Council status. Our Clerk, Melanie is a huge asset to this Council and has been invaluable to us over the past year. I also thank my fellow councillors for their work, the time they willingly give, and the example they set. I have said this before too.Your Councillors do the job that they do in the public interest, without charge or fuss and sometimes at great inconvenience to private, working or family life. I therefore urge Parishioners to take time out occasionally to express their gratitude when deserved. Steve Walker

38 FROM THE MINISTER Dear Friends, As someone who drives around in a car a lot I am increasingly noticing that as I go through a traffic light on amber there seem to be at least 3 more cars behind me when I reach the other side of the lights.Whilst reading my daily devotions I came across this story; A good citizen was being followed too close by a stressed-out woman on a busy street. Suddenly, the light at the junction just in front of them turned amber. The good citizen did the right thing by stopping at the crossing - even though he could have beaten the red light by racing through it. The woman behind hit the roof - and her horn. She was screaming in frustration because she had missed her chance to get through the lights. As she was still in mid-rant - alternately pounding the steering wheel and gesturing to the man in front of her - she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He put handcuffs on her, took her to the police station, where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a cell. After a couple of hours, a police officer approached the cell and opened the door. The woman was escorted back to the front desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, "I'm very sorry for my mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were tooting your horn and shouting at the man in front. Then I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do?' bumper sticker, the 'Follow Me to Sunday School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the boot. Naturally, I assumed you had stolen the car." Ouch! Have you seen anyone behaving like that? I wonder sometimes whether there is a thought that we can come to Church and behave one way, and for the rest of the week we can be "just like everybody else." But in the book of Acts, Jesus calls us to be his witnesses 24/7.We all have parts of our lives that we try to keep to ourselves - perhaps over the summer you might find time to reflect on those areas you have yet to give to Jesus and ask for his help and strength to offer your whole life to him. Grace and peace to you - Keith
