Community spotlight Crawley Keyboard Club Join them for a friendly evening once a month at Furnace Green Community Centre, playing live music that appeals to all tastes from popular, light classics and musicals to Glenn Miller and the 60s. The club is a non-profit, charitable organisation welcoming regular and new audiences, either as visitors or new members. Members are people who love music, some play their own keyboard at home or simply just enjoy listening to live music. Do-it-yourself afternoons are usually held once a month where members can bring their own keyboards and meet others in a relaxing atmosphere. Concerts are held at the Furnace Green Community Centre in Ashburnham Road on the last Friday of every month (except December). Artistes come from all over the UK and Europe – some have been playing for many years and are extremely talented, others young and just starting out. To commemorate its 30th birthday this year, the club is holding celebratory concerts; something a bit different with an added variety show. They’re also part of the 2019 Crawley Festival line up with a concert on Friday 28 June featuring special guest, Elizabeth Harrison. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start, finishing at 10pm. Visitors are welcome for an entry fee of £7. There’s free parking and tea and coffee during the interval! For more information call Brenda on 01293 784166, email brenda@tigerpals.co.uk or find them on facebook.com/crawleykeyboardclub or at organfax.co.uk/clubs/crawley 6 CRAWLEYLive Summer 2019

My Mayoral year – Former Mayor of Crawley, Carlos Castro, sums up his term in office. My year as Mayor was very busy supporting our local community. Although I can’t mention every single engagement, I’ll highlight some that are likely to be memorable to you too. Attending the Armed Forces Day event in June was an Throughout the year I had the chance to help support local opportunity to show support for the men and women who charities and annual events, organised by our amazing make up the armed forces community; from serving troops residents who volunteer their precious time to make our to service families and veterans to cadets. I took pride in the community a better place to live. From multicultural speech I wrote to show my gratitude. celebrations and traditional ones like the Poppy Appeal where I met Ken, a 97-year-old veteran. Also presenting certificates to residents for their outstanding achievements including Scouts, at Crawley Community Awards and attending the Crawley Fire Station’s open day. The diary got really busy leading up to Christmas and driving the Christmas sleigh up to the High Street was great fun. Speaking of the High Street, we have great events happening throughout the year here and it was really awesome to see the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run – I even had the pleasure of meeting Yasmin Le Bon! In Tilgate I would like to thank local businesses who have supported Park I proudly (and safely!) managed to light the beacon to me with prizes throughout the year in order to help raise mark 100 years since the end of the First World War. funds for my chosen charity, The Forget Me Not Club and all the individuals who bought raffle tickets and made donations. The funds will help the charity continue their great work and raise their profile. I can’t express how honoured I am for the amazing chance to represent this town I fell in love with. Crawley’s become my home. I don’t need to be born here to call it that, but it is my home and where my children will have a future. I thank you all for your support and I look forward to a new chapter.
From the Leader With Crawley's first all-out elections in 15 years over, and all the bureaucracy involved in starting a new council year complete, it's a relief to again be able to focus solely on the challenges facing our town. The Government has taken the last of Crawley's grant and I'm determined to avoid cuts, which means trying to make up the difference through money-generating schemes such as the redevelopment of the Town Hall site. Housing continues to be a huge challenge and while we are building hundreds of new affordable homes every year, the challenge we're now working on is finding new land for homes without losing valuable green space. Gatwick has also changed ownership and there are questions as to what changes at the airport might mean for Crawley. While the path of our country remains uncertain, whatever happens you will continue to have a council which is on your side. Councillor Peter Lamb Leader of Crawley Borough Council Have your say on arts and culture Crawley Borough Council, with funding from Arts Council England, is inviting you to get talking about the current arts and culture offer in the town. The consultation focuses on identifying gaps and gathering information on how arts and culture can be improved. Results will be used to develop an arts and culture strategy for Crawley. There are only five questions and it takes just a couple of minutes to complete. Visit crawley.gov.uk/getinvolved ‘Mystic Joe’, a fun and interactive concept, cleverly incorporates art and technology, recording responses to the consultation via a touchscreen. It will be visiting local venues, events and businesses to ensure as many members of the public as possible have an opportunity to contribute to the consultation. Details of the schedule can be found on the council’s social media channels and at crawley.gov.uk/events

The Great Maidenbower Spring Clean Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean saw the country’s biggest ever mass-action, environmental campaign. It inspired more than 500,000 people to participate this year in partnership with community organisations, businesses and the government, to collect and safely dispose of litter from our streets, parks and beaches, recycling as much as possible. Continuing the success last year of their Eco Warriors initiative, The Brook School joined forces with Maidenbower Juniors and Maidenbower Infants to hold the ‘Great Maidenbower Spring Clean’, supported by Crawley Borough Council’s Neighbourhood Services Team. Around 50 children, along with their parents, collected almost 60 bags of rubbish. They also found several traffic cones dumped in the river, along with a child’s scooter, shopping baskets and a set of car headlights! Following the triumph of the litter pick in March, and the Some of the items found in the clean-up positive response from the community, they’re planning Find out more about the initiative at on holding another in July. keepbritaintidy.org Holiday childcare OFSTED-registered holiday childcare is available at our Cherry Lane and Waterlea Adventure Playgrounds for up to 24 children per site, aged between five and 12 years old.
