Pickle Ball in Silver Springs Did you know there are 5 pickle ball courts in Silver Springs Community? They are located at the south end of the Botanical Gardens and is a shared City facility with the Tennis Courts. If you are looking for parking, go east one block on Silver Springs Drive and there is a parking lot on the right side. You must cross the soccer field to get to the courts. Now that you know where the courts are who is eligible to use these courts? The courts are for public use 7 day a week. You are welcome to bring your own net but if you don’t own one, we can help. Go to silverspringscommunity.ca and purchase a family or Seniors Silver Springs Membership. The office can provide you with a code to the lock box that contains 2-3 nets at the courts. The code changes every year so you will have to renew your membership to receive the new code, and this is also how we know who is using the nets so please don’t share the code with your neighbors and friends. You will have to supply your own balls as the ones in the box keep disappearing. Please make sure the key and lock box are secure when you leave the courts. The City of Calgary has posted a sign for the use of the tennis and pickle ball courts. The City have set a 30- minute time limit so that everyone gets a chance to use the courts. If a patron has booked the courts, they must show you a permit for that day and time and will not have to follow the 30-minute rule. This is a great game so please show common courtesy to all users and enjoy the season. THE SILVER SPRINGS SPIRIT JULY 2021 15

Introducing the “Silver Springs Pump Track” Silver Springs Community Association, 5720 Silver Ridge Drive N.W., Calgary, AB, The SSCA is excited to announce that in early July this newest addition to our community will be open for biking enthusiasts of all ages! The actual date of the opening will depend on when the sod is ready, we know everyone is excited, but please just be patient and stay off of track until the construction fencing comes down. You will even see a new entrance in the chain link fence at the SSCA lower parking lot, where biking families can enter the community association and head directly to the pump track. We also plan to have a sitting space next to the pump track. THE SILVER SPRINGS SPIRIT JULY 2021 17
Wondering what a pump track is? You’re not the only one :) A pump track is a bike track on which cyclists “pump” their pedals instead of pedaling, using the momentum they gain moving over rollers and berms. Two tracks have been built, a beginner track, designed for young children and beginners and a longer, intermediate track for more experienced riders. We want everyone to enjoy the tracks, so please be mindful of other riders, and any wet conditions of our dirt track to prevent damage and keep it safe for everyone. Please ensure all rules and regulations are followed. Helmets are advised. Signs on display share the rules of the pump track at both ends of the track. THE SILVER SPRINGS SPIRIT JULY 2021 18

June 2021 Neighbourhood Streets Silver Springs Wheeling Lanes Wheeling lanes are being installed using temporary material along Silver Springs Boulevard in response to community concerns around vehicle speeds, pedestrian safety and a desire for safe and green mobility options. What it is: By installing wheeling lanes, a dedicated space is provided for all users. Calgarians tells us that separated wheeling lanes provide a comfortable and safe experience, which leads to more travel opportunities for residents to access community destinations. - To help keep people moving year-round, wheeling lanes are typically located on higher priority snow routes such that they can be quickly cleared after a snowfall ends. It is also more efficient to clear wheeling facilities in tandem with parallel facilities like sidewalks and roadways. Who is it for: Wheeling lanes are for people traveling by bike, scooter, rollerblade, skateboard, or other device intended for active travel. Gas powered devices are not permitted in the wheeling lanes. People using motorized mobility aids still use the sidewalk. How it works: Silver Springs wheeling lanes operate similar to other dedicated facilities in Calgary. A few key features include: o Lanes are located on both sides of the street. o People cycling and wheeling travel in the same direction as vehicle traffic. o Regular traffic signals direct all road users through intersections. How to use the wheeling lanes... When Driving: o Look both ways when entering/exiting a driveway or alley. o Always shoulder check before turning. o Yield to people traveling in the wheeling lane; turning only when it is safe to do so. o Watch your blind spot when preparing to make a right turn. Yield to people cycling just as you would another driver. o Do not park or drive in the dedicated wheeling lane. When Walking: o Look both ways when crossing the wheeling and vehicle lanes. o Share the sidewalk with youth, 14 and under, who may choose to wheel on-street or off. When Wheeling: o Travel in the direction of traffic. o Obey all traffic signals. o Yield to pedestrians. o Adhere to posted speed limit. o Watch for vehicles, especially those turning across your path. What hand signals should I use when cycling? What do the new signs and road markings mean? Green dashed lines o Indicates an intersecting place where people driving, wheeling and walking should pay more attention o Drivers should watch for and yield to people wheeling and walking. June 2021 calgary.ca/SilverSpringsStreets Page 2 of 3 THE SILVER SPRINGS SPIRIT JULY 2021 30
New signage o Posted sign and pavement markings designate on-street space for people cycling. o Drivers are not permitted to park or drive in bicycle lanes, but may turn across them to access an alley, driveway or other driving space. o Drivers must signal before crossing the bike lane and yield to cyclists o Indicates drivers are allowed to turn across a cycle track to access an alley, driveway or intersection. o Drivers must signal before crossing the bike lane and yield to people cycling.
