PETE & LAURA - PAST PUPILS PETE Intelligence looks different. Some people see intelligence to be high level algebra, perfect grammar or a firm understanding of Physics, but it can take many different shapes and forms. When I arrived at Craigavon Senior Hgh School as a 14 year old I believed intelligence to be high results in every subject, something that for me was unobtainable. I felt deflated and didn’t put a lot of effort into subjects that I found tedious at times and difficult. My English teacher at the time, Mrs Cousins, noticed that I hadn’t been putting the same amount of effort into my work that I could and asked me why I had disengaged with my work. We looked through all of my recent grades and she noticed that I had maintained a steady mark in some subjects, whilst others fell. I told her that I was never going to reach the same marks as some of my classmates and there was no point in trying. That’s when she gave me some advice that changed my education and ultimately has led me to where I am today. She noted that the subjects that I had maintained steady grades in were creative subjects and told me that intelligence can look many different ways. Intelligence can be artistic, musical, language-based, interpersonal, being good with your hands, understanding engines, being fluent with software codes or understanding the world we live in, it can look completely different in every person. After that conversation, I pursed Technology and Design, I invested my energy into that subject and went on to study Graphic Design and Visual Communication. I learned Design and Photography which to respect others and their fields of that my intelligence was a visual brought me to university to study intelligence. One of my subject choices was Construction which I later went on to pursue as my chosen career path. The help and support I received from the teaching staff was outstanding enabling me to prepare meticulously for my exams. After studying my GCSE’s, I enrolled onto Level 3 Sustainable Construction at the SRC. After obtaining the grades required, I then commenced my foundation degree at SRC and my final two years at Ulster University. In the summer of 2020, I graduated from Ulster University with a 2:1 BSc (Hons) in Construction, Engineering & Management which led to me gaining employment within this field of work. I would highly recommend this career path for anyone interested in the Construction industry with a world of opportunities available going forward. SCHOOL PROSPECTUS 2021/22 21
