My dear Brothers and Sisters -- In the midst of my first Easter here at Saint Anselm Parish I am reminded by the words of an author I first read in English Literature class: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair…” These words of Charles Dickens remind me that these difficult days will pass, we will join together again in church - I do not know when, only the good Lord does...During the Easter Season we as Catholics can proclaim - ‘Christ is Risen’; ‘He is Risen indeed, Alleluia!’ Alleluia in Hebrew means “praise the Lord”. This is what we do, even in the midst of these burdensome days. We praise the Lord on high for bringing us into a relationship with Himself, and for redeeming us through the Passion, Death and eventual Resurrection of Christ, His only begotten Son. St. John so beautifully states in his Gospel: “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son so that we might have eternal life through Him…” These words can fortify us during the storm of this pandemic, my fellow parishioners. In this reflection I want to share a paragraph from an ancient source, quoted in what the Church calls the Liturgy of the Hours (prayed by many priests and religious every day) on Holy Saturday morning: For the sake of you, who left a garden, I was betrayed to the Jews in a garden, and I was crucified in a garden. See on my face the spittle I received in order to restore to you the life I once breathed into you. See there the marks of the blows I received in order to refashion your warped nature in my image. On my back see the marks of the scourging I endured to remove the burden of sin that weighs upon your back. See my hands, nailed firmly to a tree, for you who once wickedly stretched out your hand to a tree. I slept on the cross and a sword pierced my side for you who slept in paradise and brought forth Eve from your side. My side has healed the pain in yours. My sleep will rouse you from your sleep in hell. The sword that pierced me has sheathed the sword that was turned against you. Rise let us leave this place! Pray God soon, we will hear in a spiritual manner these words of Christ, arise with Him, and return to our parish church. But in the midst of these fatiguing days, know of my prayers for all of you. I realize many are out of work & many are struggling. Some have battled or will battle the virus. Some work long hours in hospitals, in police cars, in battling emergencies, in responding to the needs of their neighbors. Please know of the gratitude of each one of us here: those of you who are first responders, health care workers, doctors or nurses. We support you and do not forget to pray for you here at the altar every day. Father Mekonnen and I offer each Mass for the scheduled intention, but also add our personal prayers for all of you. As we continue to social distance and stay home, please know that we pray with every one of you. I am sorry we cannot be together; this is difficult for you yes - more difficult for me amidst this first year here as your administrator. Nonetheless, know of my gratitude to all those who have contributed to the Sunday and Easter collections. We thank you for remembering your parish church and community. We continue to support our teachers, catechists and staff who will return to online / virtual teaching after the brief Easter break, and I personally thank them for all they are doing for our parish children.
I realize this situation has placed many challenges before us. As I stated in my video before Holy Week, we have had to make some difficult decisions. One of those was postponing First Holy Communion. After some discussion among the staff here, and most importantly Mrs. Murphy and Mr. Polselli, I have made the decision to postpone through the summer. I hope we will be free to spend some time “down the shore”. When we all return, we still must offer practices and a retreat day, so we have chosen the 27th of September, a Sunday to celebrate First Holy Communion. We will celebrate at the 12 Noon Mass so parishioners and other family members may attend. There is plenty of room in God’s house, our parish church here! Delaying until September is difficult, and if any family cannot celebrate with us then, we will be flexible. Once school returns, speak personally to either your child’s teacher or catechist and we can plan another Sunday to celebrate if necessary. Additional to this, we are working diligently to reschedule other parish events, like our Carnival. No dates are set yet, but stay tuned ;) Lastly, brothers and sisters, I repeat - the Lord is Risen, He is Risen indeed, alleluia! Let us rejoice with our immediate families and those with whom we live to celebrate by watching Mass online or on television and participating the best way we are able. If you may choose, email us a photo so we can post a collage of our parish families viewing Easter Mass together. That would be wonderful! It would be so nice to see you appreciating what we are doing here in the parish church this Holy Week. May the good Lord Jesus bless and protect each member of our parish community, and may He send down His Spirit of Love into each of your homes this Easter! As we Italians say, Buona Pasqua! In prayer and with gratitude, Father Rossi
