Page 4 December 2020/January 2021 Chairman’s Report Well by the time you read this we will be days away from Christmas. It has cer- tainly been a strange and long year for us all. Who would have thought a year ago what was in store for us and the rest of the world? We can be so very grateful that New Zealand has coped so well over this terrible period in the world's history. Let's hope that next year things will get better for all of us world wide. November started off with the Kaiaua Fish ‘n Chip run. For some reason the nor- mal large numbers of people attending was down, maybe they knew that the fish and chip shop would be closed for the first time in memory. Anyway thirty motorcycles and six cars attended. Next up was the Veteran Section meeting. A number of our members went on the Far North Tour. The Motorcycle meeting was next where there was a good turnout of members to hear guest speaker Graham Viall talk about his Honda RC30 super bike which he brought along. The monthly Club Run was the Annual Ladies Rally, plotted this year, by Annette Foot. Annette managed to get sponsorship from Countdown that covered the food costs at the finish, which was a High Tea that Lynda put on at our Pokeno farm. The Mid Week Tourers went to Wrights water gardens. A number of members went to Taranaki for the Annual Maunga Moana Rally. This year was the 40th Anniversary of the Annual Auckland Motorcycle Rally. I won this rally last year and normally I would be asked to plot the following years one, but I was told to take a back seat and the team of Peter Alderdice, Alan Greenslade, Graeme Crawley and Keith Ballagh did a sterling job of producing a great and memorable event, which saw fifty seven entries. It was pleasing to get out of town riders coming from Waikato, Warkworth, Waihi, Tauranga and Wellington. Club Captain Lynda Spicer catered for the Friday night meal, the Saturday lunches and the Saturday night prize giving dinner. The feed back from the competitors was very good. The overall winner was Alan Macy from our Branch. Novembers Club Night speaker was from St John who gave a very interesting talk. Thanks Alan Price for organising this. Over the weekend of the 27-29 November, a large number of our members went down to Taranaki for the postponed Rubber Duckie Motorcycle Rally. The Vintage Section finished the month on the 28 November. Coming Up: Sunday 13 December is the Motorcycle Christmas BBQ at our Pokeno farm, leaving the Jolly Farmer Drury at 12:30 p.m. Our December Club Night is the Pot Luck Dinner. The last Motorcycle meeting for 2020 is Saturday 19 December—Guest Speaker will be Motorcycle Speedway icon, Colin Tucker with a speedway bike. This meeting is also the one where Lynda pulls out all the stops to provide you with a great Christmas afternoon tea. Friday 1 January 2021 – New Years Day run – Kaiaua Fish ‘n Chip – Starting Jolly Farmer, Drury at 12:00 noon.
December 2020/January 2021 Page 5 Secretary’s Notes Well then folks, all that needs to be said now is Lynda and I wish all of you and your families a great Christmas and much better new year. Stay safe and well and enjoy your motoring over the festive season. Keep all those 2 , 3 and 4 wheels turning safely. Martin Spicer Robinson Instrument Ltd Unit 3 31 Princes St, Onehunga, Auckland. Page 6 December 2020/January 2021 Veteran Notes John Stokes, who normally runs the meetings, had gone on the Far North Tour so asked me to step in. It was good to see members present from three Branches of VCC in Auckland. As we have done in the past, we went around the table and had some great conversations. Barry Robert said he might sell the 1909 Rover. This car is the only twin cylinder water cooled Rover to survive anywhere in the world so does that mean it is worth more money? Wayne Welch was looking for a source of brown lino to replace it on the Davis. Wayne told us the Davis was one of only three that came into NZ at the time. One of the first cars sold in the States that sported two tone colour schemes. Brother, Gavin was preparing the 1914 Model T Ford for a run in Te Kuiti. Russell Vincent told us he is building up a 1904 Cadillac from parts. There is a very similar car for sale on the North Shore at present if someone is looking for a very early vet- eran to restore. Cars manufactured prior to 1905 with a known history seldom come on the market in NZ. Anyone interested can contact me and I will give you the contact details of the vendor. Dennis Lowe produced two stromberg carburettors he was trying to identify. We really were not much help but could see they were probably off a large veteran. Dennis told us he had just got a warrant for his 1903 Oldsmobile so he could take the car to Napier. Roslyn Lowe had been selling parts for Wilma Madgwick on Trade Me and talked about recent success with a magneto. David Oliver, with some help from Vern Jenson in Fielding, had just replaced the timber in four wheels on the 1914 Model T Ford. While he had the wheels off the car, he decided to purchase a trailer. That was a mistake need I say more! Ian Goldingham produced a water pump he had found in Peter Maxwell’s shed. Peter joined the VCC in 1955 and Ian thought the pump might have come with some Sunbeam parts Peter had collected from the Hawkes Bay. The brass grease nipple had the answer, it was produced by Napier Company, so the pump had great pedigree. John Morrison said he had recently brought home the 1906 Cadillac he had purchased earlier in Hamilton and told us he was hoping to have three veterans at the Art Deco next year. The 1915 Briscoe was presently with an auto electrician. Good keen man. Tim Edney told us how he was purchasing a car in Wales when Covid-19 arrived. The car had been in the same family for 97 years. He is still hoping to bring the car in, but wants to go to Wales so he can meet the 88-year owner and learn a little more of the car’s early history. So important to do this exercise as pedigree today means so much in Europe. He said he had recently given the twin cylinder 1908 Alldays and Onions a run. Peter LeGros has found someone to tidy up the leather seat on the 1901 Locomobile. Peter said the leather had been re- placed by Roy Tomlin in 1955 and again he was hoping to have the Locomo- bile steamer in Napier. Bryan Belcher told us that Robert Duncan in Wanaka had passed away. Rob- ert owned the Classic Car Museum in Wanaka and was restoring a large Chrys- ler he had earlier brought in from the States. Philip Eilenberg reminded us of an upcoming HCC run and told us George Urquhart was not well. We talked about two veterans for sale on Trade Me and all agreed it was hard to sell a veteran if it was left hand drive.
December 2020/January 2021 Page 7 Veteran Notes Contd... We all knew Walter McFarland’s 1915 Studebaker, but nobody knew anything of the 1911 Model T Ford for sale in the South Island. If a car does come in from the States before 1915 the steering wheel normally is on the right side, as they once did drive on “our” side of the road. Lots of great conversation again and it was good to see so many going to Napier. Pity we could not make a cup of tea, but John Stokes never left us with a key for the tea cupboard. In February 2021 see you in Napier. Barry Birchall ARE YOU ON THE TREE? We have an email tree to remind you what is coming up and any other relevant information that comes to hand between Bulletins. You won’t get bombarded with rubbish and your email address is not visible to anyone else on the dis- tribution list. Page 8 December 2020/January 2021 Motorcycle Notes The day dawned warm and sunny for the November meeting. Now I have a few guest speakers in the pot, but none could come for the meeting and as luck would have it, every Thursday morning I meet the Howick group of riders at the end of their rides at one of three cafes they go to. They met at Maraetai cafe where it was a nice sunny day with great views across the water of Waiheke Is- land. The motorcycles parked outside the cafe were a Vincent, two Velocette's, BSA, Matchless, Yamaha, Triumph and then another three Branch members pulled up in a car, Alastair & Karin Moffat and Brian King. Member Terry Doherty told me that his friend and member Graham Viall had said he wouldn't mind coming to speak at one of our meetings. So later in the day I phoned Graham, who was away up north riding one of his motorcycles with friends. I asked him if he would come and talk at the Saturday meeting, to which he said yes. When we arrived at the Clubrooms Graham was already there setting up his rare and collectable Honda RC 30 super motorcycle, that he had ridden there. Out in the carpark there was a great collection of shiny motorcycles, also parked up was three side car outfits, a 1920's Harley Davidson, a 1930's BSA and a 1950's BSA, with all the sidecars being completely different. We had around 50 in at- tendance, including two young visitors Sam Broadhead and Jacob Garner who both rode to the meeting. Reports: Martin reported on the recent successful Hunua 100 Rally weekend and mem- bers applauded Peter Alderdice for winning the Motorcycle class. Martin also spoke about the Kaiaua Fish ‘n chip run which was down on numbers to what we normally get. This was the first time in memory the Fish and chip shop was closed and nobody seemed to know why? A good lunch in the rear garden of the Hotel next door was had by all and it looked great with thirty motorcycles parked along the fence. Coming Up: Sunday 6 December is the Branch’s end of year Picnic Day to be held in Oratia at Murray and Penny Firths property. The Motorcycle Christmas BBQ is on 13th December at the Spicer’s Pokeno Farm. The Branch Pot Luck dinner is on Thursday 17th December. The last Motorcycle meeting for 2020 is on 19 th December - Guest Speaker will be Motorcycle Speedway icon Colin Tucker, with a speedway bike. This is the meeting where Lynda pull's out all the stops when providing the Christmas after meeting tea. General Business: There was discussion on the merits of buying Chinese made NGK spark plugs, as it seems they are so inferior to the Japanese ones and last for only 100 kms, then the misfires set in. A number of members said they have had problems with NGK plugs too. Marshall Coraza told us that he'd been to a Harley dealer to get some spares for his 1993 Sportster which he bought new from them, only to be told that they will not supply parts for any Harley made before 1997. Guest Speaker: Graham Viall told us his story about buying the Honda RC30 (VFR 750). Back in
December 2020/January 2021 Page 9 Motorcycle Notes Contd.. the late 1980's Honda wanted to compete in the new Super Bike World Cham- pionship so they built the Honda VFR750R, model code 'RC30'. It was a fully faired, solo seat only, racing motorcycle created for homologation purposes for the World Super Bike Championship by Honda Racing Corporation (HRC). It was first released to the Japanese market in 1987, 1988 released in Europe, then the United States in 1990. There were only 3,000 ever made and sold for US$15,000, a very large amount for a production bike at the time. The Japa- nese home models were limited to around 76BHP, whereas those sold overseas were around 118BHP. You could buy a race kit for the bikes that would make it a real super bike racer, but the cost of the kit was as much as buying the bike in the first place. Fred Merkel won the inaugural Super Bike World Champion- ship riders and manufacturers titles in 1988 and repeated this feat again in 1989. Robert Dunlop won the 1989 Macau GP and Steve Hislop did the same in 1990. These bike's won National Championships in the USA and race wins at the Isle of Man TT. Graham says that this bike is one of the best handling bikes he has ridden and it gives you so much more confidence when riding it. Graham then changed the subject and talked about the Auckland Classic and new bike show that was cancelled due to Covid-19. He told us how much it cost to hire the 5 halls in 2019 - $90.000 and that was a reduced price as it's a charity event. Our Branch has been taking part in these shows since the start at Manukau City and at the last show we had nearly forty motorcycles on dis- play. Let's hope we can have the show again in the future. Graham ended his talk and said he would come and see us again with another of his collectable motorcycle's. Martin and the members thanked Graham for coming to talk to us. Keep those 2, 3 and 4 wheels turning safely. Martin Spicer & Jack Clark Right—Graham Viall & Martin Spicer
Page 10 December 2020/January 2021 Mid Week Tourers First, a footnote to the earlier notes on our October run to Angus Fogg’s home and workshop. Waitemata Branch are regular supporters of these runs and there is a very good report and photographs of this run in their newsletter. See the November issue of the “Phoenix”. A “thumbs up” for their wordsmith and again to our Jack. Last month was a short run to Wrights Water Gardens and café at Patumahoe, which turned out to be longer than expected by some. The usual good support gathered at Drury and others met at the finish. The instructions (I heard some say were “challenging”, but that’s new blood, which brings us a different perspec- tive), took us on a circular route around the western side of Franklin. One small breakdown, when one car had a petrol issue and stopped on a very steep hill near a very sharp corner. Thanks to Steve Driver, the Good Samaritan, who did his best but eventually AA Plus was called. We should all consider having that. Thank you Mike. Coming Events: Wednesday 20 January—Starts from BP Drury Service Centre, Southern Motorway 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. BYO everything, it looks like we could be visiting a member’s home and garage. February—(and even further ahead). Nothing on the planning board as yet, think about it! December 2020/January 2021 Page 11 Commercial Notes I hadn’t made any moves toward a Christmas function at our home this year, as our numbers have been steadily declining all year and such a function may well have involved a mere handful. This was reinforced at the November Com- mercial evening when I was joined by just one other soul. I am cognisant of the fact that some were out of town, but surely the writing is on the wall. On top of that, I learn that John Perich is reluctantly parting with his beloved 1954 Ford Thames Cost- cutter. The Coronavirus has dealt John a cruel blow and he has been “Stood Down” from his job. Working for the Crown doesn’t neces- sarily mean job security, that’s for sure. Whoev- er winds up with the truck will have scored a piece of New Zealand history, it was bought new by the Hobson County Council (now The Kaipara District Council) in Dar- gaville and retired to the Perich family form Dargaville at the end of its working life, whence it was given a full restoration. Would that it is bought by an Auck- lander and remains in our Branch. The auction takes place on the 13 th of this month. Murray & Penny Firth left in their 1931 British Bedford on November the 16 th for a six-week sojourn in the South Island, well five weeks actually, Murray had al- lowed five days just to reach Wellington. The spruce up he had completed shortly before they set off gave him much satisfaction. With the Firths absent from their property on the date of our annual picnic, friend Lindsay Whittle was “minding” the property, and now let us see some enthusiasm for 2021, begin- ning on January the 27th. Page 12 December 2020/January 2021 Library Notes Members are aware that in our Library we are custodians of a collection of books which are the property of the Rolls Royce and Bentley Club. These books are available for AVVCC members to borrow on the same basis as the collec- tion of books that belong to the AVVCC. That is, pay the $2.00 fee, sign the loan book and you can take the book home and read it at your leisure. Recently, our attention was drawn by (RR owner) Richard Green, to a book enti- tled ‘The history of Rolls Royce cars,1903-1907 Vol. 1’ by C W Morton and as we had not read it, we took his advice. What an absorbing read it has been, so much so we can’t recall any motoring book which so completely and in so much detail, covers its very significant subject matter. Those early days of mo- toring, when C S Rolls and Henry Royce first went into business as Rolls Royce are the stuff of motoring legend of course, but it is doubtful that the story and espe- cially the development of their first cars have been recorded so comprehensive- ly. The fact that the book has been classified as Volume One, you would expect that there are further volumes and in fact there were to be four, but the other three volumes were never compiled nor published, which in a strange way makes this one work even more special. We recommend it as an excellent if demanding, read. In recent times we have been fortunate to have received some excellent mate- rial donated by the late Bruce Madgwick. Many members will be aware that over the many years of his interest in vintage cars and trucks, Bruce had com- piled a great deal of worthwhile information, a lot of it of a technical nature and a lot of it in photographic form. His scrapbooks in particular are wonderful re- minders of the thoroughness of his work and his abiding love for old cars and mechanical transport in general. This material will all add to our Library archives and is greatly appreciated. Talking of photos of old cars, Loretta McGarry has donated some rather special photo albums for our collection. Loretta’s association with our Branch goes back prior to the late 50’s and the albums she has compiled over the years, es- pecially of people and their cars at club rallies in various parts of the country, are really special. Each photo has been carefully and clearly captioned and if any member is looking for photos of our cars taken back in those days then these albums are a must see. Thank you Loretta for your generosity. This being the last report for 2020, the team would like to thank members for their on-going support of our work and especially during this unusual time of Covid-19. We wish everyone a happy festive season and a prosperous 2021. Chris Wood and the Library Team—Barry Birchall, Colin Bott, Owen Hay- ward, Barry Robert & John Stokes
December 2020/January 2021 Page 13 Secretary’s Notes We are nearly at the end of 2020! There are a number of you still unfinancial and I’ll be in touch individually but you will have had a reminder notice in November. There are a number of excellent out of town rallies coming up. Entry forms are at the Clubrooms or I can email you a copy directly: February for Eastern Bay of Plenty, Wanganui’s Burma Rally in January, Rotorua has a car show in Janu- ary also, which gets bigger every year and the Highland Fling in April. Stephen and I and several other Auckland members attended Taranaki’s Maunga Moana in November, a great weekend and a reminder of the great roads we will motor on in 2021 for the Vero International Festival of Motoring, hope you’re planning to be there. Merry Christmas and safe motoring. Tracey Winterbottom Vintage Section At the November meeting for the Vintage Section, there was a small attend- ance with general discussion. Page 14 December 2020/January 2021 Club Captain’s Report Hasn’t it been great that we have been able to take part in all the month’s events both in Auckland and further afield? A good way to start off a summer of motoring, hopefully without any more lockdowns. John Stokes’ Veteran meeting kicked off the month. It was pleasing to see that a new member has a Veteran vehicle. The Motorcycle Section met next with Graham Viall as guest speaker who brought along a rather exotic Japanese race bike. A great turnout of about 50 members and there was a great selection of motorcycles parked in the rear car- park. The Ladies Run plotted this year by Annette Foot, was a great success. I believe 18 vehicles and about 44 people took part, which ended up at my farm for a “Garden Party High Tea”. Congratulations to Alan and Christine Allbon for win- ning this run and thank you to Countdown, Pakuranga, who kindly sponsored the ingredients for the High Tea. Thanks to Ken & Annette for plotting the run and Glenn & Marion Morris who were start and tail end charlies. This year saw the 40th Anniversary of the Auckland Motorcycle Rally and it was pleasing to see 57 entries, 16 entries coming from out of town. I did all the cater- ing for this event which was the traditional Friday night Pie n Mash Night, Satur- day lunch, where they had individual platters of meats, cheeses, etc. followed by cake, then on Saturday night a great buffet menu, desserts and a 40 th Anni- versary Cake. The weather stayed fine and a great weekend was had by all. Thanks to all the marshals and to the team who put this year’s rally together; Graeme Cawley, Peter Alderdice, Keith Ballagh and Alan Greenslade. During November a group of members from our Branch went to the Maunga Moana Rally in Taranaki and the last weekend saw a group of motorcyclists trav- el to Taranaki for the delayed Rubber Duckie. A good time was had by all at- tendees. Club Night was organised by Alan Price, with a member from St John Ambu- lance coming along to talk on CPR and how to use a Defibrillator. It was a shame only 18 members came along. It was very interesting, a grave subject dealt with in an informative way with a number of humorous moments. My question to the members that didn’t come along, would you know how to work a Defibrillator or even give CPR in a life/death situation? Well you missed your chance to learn. I have done a first aid course and I learned quite a bit that evening. Coming Up: By the time you receive this, we will have had our Annual Picnic, this year at Mur- ray & Penny Firth’s property in Oratia. Also, our charabanc bus, Angelique would have been out on the Auckland Santa Parade. Sunday 13 December—Annual short run followed by BBQ lunch at our farm for the Motorcycle Section Thursday 17 December—Pot Luck Dinner (see note below) Saturday 19 December—Motorcycle Meeting – Guest Speaker, Colin Tucker, Speedway icon. Friday 1 January 2021—New Years Day Run out to Kaiaua for Fish ‘n Chips. Note start time this year is 12:00 noon starting at Jolly Farmer, Drury.
December 2020/January 2021 Page 15 Club Captain’s Report Contd.. Pot Luck Dinner/Section Meetings Times have been tough this year for many families and I invite you all to bring along some non perishable goods, or even little inexpensive gifts for children, that we can donate to the Salvation Army, who do such a wonderful job of looking after people at all times, but especially in hard times. If everyone brings along a couple of items we will have a jolly good donation to give to people not so fortunate as ourselves. Let’s help to “light up” someone else’s Christmas. As we move very quickly to the close of 2020, it is certainly a time for reflexion. How lucky we have been in New Zealand, being kept as safe as we could be from a world wide decimating pandemic. Although it has been tough with lockdowns, it was wonderful to see communities coming together, looking after each other but staying within their bubbles. A few of my friends came together in Waiuku, taking grocery orders over the phone, arranging payment and pick- ing and delivering them to the elderly and people with health issues, working alongside with New World. Our own Branch members, keeping in touch with those that we knew were alone and helping out wherever possible. I have heard stories of young families, certainly getting back in touch with what a family is about, doing things with their kids, back to how a lot of us, when we were kids were amused. Making stuff out in the backyard with what was to hand, baking with mum in the kitchen. So out of tough times, came some real- ly positive stuff. This year, 2020, we have not been able to have the number of meetings to at- tend, nor the events to attend, so for 2021, I invite to you take part in as much as you are able to, enjoy your vehicles and come out to the various section meetings such as Veteran, Commercial, Motorcycle and Vintage, as well as the Mid Week Tourers run and when we can all get together at monthly runs, trophy rallies and monthly club nights. The Committee works very hard to find places of interest for people to enjoy at the end of the monthly runs and of finding interesting people to come along and speak at our monthly club nights. Please support your Branch in the events provided for your enjoyment. All now that is left is for me to say is that Martin and I wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas and every good wish for 2021. Look forward to seeing you out and about Kia Kaha Lynda Spicer

December 2020/January 2021 Page 19 Kaiaua Fish ‘n Chip Run Sunday 1 November dawned warm and sunny. This run was originally set for May, but due to Covid-19 it was put on hold. Assembled in the Jolly Farmer’s carpark, were around twenty-four motorcycles and six cars. It was great to see old motorcycle members that I hadn't seen for a number of years. John Caul- field in his 70's MGB and Mike Wise in his Porsche and also recent Hunua 100 winner Gavin Welch and Sophie Zhao in their 1934 Ford Y. Other vehicles were Cedric Pegrum in his 1930 Chevrolet and a nice looking Model A. Warwick and Trish Darrow came along in their modern. It was good to see Rory King out for the very first time on his recently built 1951 Triumph Thunderbird, the motorcycle performing well for Rory. Don Green was out on an outstanding looking Norton Commando that he has recently finished restoring for a Norton Club member. This motorcycle was under water two years ago in the Kaiaua floods - it now looks like new. We had a pleasant journey to Kaiaua and as always we had that great view of the Firth of Thames and the Coromandel. When we arrived at the carpark we were surprised to find the Fish ‘n Chip shop closed, it had been closed for a week and the people in the Hotel and garage didn't know why! There were around 10 other motorcycles parked, so we went into the Hotel and sat out the back in the pleasant garden to have our fish ‘n chips and burgers. Three mem- bers, Roy White, Paul Whitehead and Clive Hallam joined us, having travelled from Whangamata, Katikati and Waihi. Garry Mitchell and John Grinter made the long journey from Orewa on their 1956 Velocette MSS and 1949 Vincent Black Shadow motorcycles. I went from table to table chatting with our mem- bers, which was a great way of passing the time. Grandson Riley and I left at 2:30pm and stopped of on our way home to visit member Paul Muir, as did Warwick and Trish Darrow. We looked over his two Velocette's and two recently acquired French Solex mopeds. Martin Spicer
Page 20 December 2020/January 2021 2020 Ladies Rally Where do I start. Three plotters, three routes and without any collaboration managed to use parts of each other's run. With everything that has happened in the last eight months, I was very pleased that the Ladies Rally was able to go ahead. We had wonderful weather for rallying over some roads that I had not been over until the Hunua, which used some of the same route only backwards. There were eighteen vehicles that turned out for the rally, which was very pleas- ing. The rally commenced from Tui St Drury, travelling through Patumahoe, Tuakau and then to Pokeno to finish with a High Tea at Martin & Lynda Spicers’s place. I would like to thank Andy from Pakuranga Countdown for donating the ingredi- ents for the high tea and Glenn & Marion Morris for checking the rally and being tail end Charlie. Also a big thank you to Ken for all his help and support. December 2020/January 2021 Page 21 2020 Far North Tour Auckland members accounted for about thirteen of the fifty or so entrants in this years Far North Tour. There were about nine Vintage entrants and about eight Post Vintage, the rest being PWV to P80V. Steve Wynne with the 1925 Red Label Bentley and Adrian Garrett with his Vauxhall 30/98 accounted for the high grade Vintage entry. Colin Wrack with the ex Bob Ballantyne 1923 Dodge Four and Arthur Jenkins with a 1924 Jewett were the only rear wheel brake entries. This is the first time I had seen this Jewett, probably an older res- toration, which has found a new home. Interestingly long time Northland mem- ber and former Hunua stalwart Elmer Music was a passenger in this car. The tour started from the Clubrooms in the Northland Pioneer Village and trav- elled through Maungatapere and Tangitaroria to Parakao, Twin Bridges and then by passed Kaikohe towards Taheke and on to Horeke. From there we had a short stop at the Historic Motukiore Mission Complex. After that it was on through Okaihau Valley and lunch at the Okaihau Hall. When lunch was over the tour went through the Puketi Forest and on to Waipapa, travelling from there to the finish at Kerikeri. The evening social was very pleasant and everyone at our table won prizes. Dave Allbon, Doug Pinker and Stuart Craig from Taranaki winning good ones. The tour broke up on Sunday morning, so Doug Pinker and I visited old friends at Motukaraka on the Northern Hokianga and then spent a pleasant couple of nights at Tony and Angela Forster’s lovely orchard just out of Glenbervie. Tues- day Doug and I went home, Doug well pleased with the performance and speedometer accuracy of his Chev Impala and he is quite satisfied with its economy and range for a five litre plus V8. Page 22 December 2020/January 2021 2020 40th Annual Motorcycle Rally Last year Martin Spicer won the Annual Motorcycle Rally and by rights was up for organising the rally this year. However, we all know how busy Martin is with the Branch already, so Alan Greenslade, Keith Ballagh and Peter Alderdice under- took to organise this rally, assisted by Graeme Crawley as rally secretary. The rally kicked off with a Pie and Mash evening on Friday which was attended by twenty including two from the Wellington Branch, Robert Simpson and Dennis Palmer. Lynda Spicer did a great job preparing the food and everyone enjoyed themselves chatting to our visitors from up North and as noted, as far south as Wellington. We really appreciated the support of the out of towners and who made up 43% of the entries. Without these people we would not have a worth- while rally. The route was plotted by Alan Greenslade. The morning session was loosely based on a Veteran rally developed by John Stokes a few years back and kindly provided to us by John. The afternoon session was created by Alan. Peter spent many hours on the road checking and moulding the instructions with Alan. The morning session took us from the Ramarama Hall beside the Southern Motorway, by way of back roads towards the northern bank of the Waikato River then back to do a loop on the Awhitu Peninsula (long route only) and on to Waiuku for a morning tea stop, which was actually a morning ice cream stop where about sixty-five ice creams were consumed, kindly donated by Tip Top Ice Cream, which was great. The lack of the traditional wooden spoons in the tubs was overcome by someone realising the local river bulrushes could be broken into spoon size lengths! The route continued on great back roads to the Ramarama Hall where entrants enjoyed a lunch pack prepared by Lynda Spicer. No rain so far and indeed none for the whole day despite one forecast for a few showers and indeed it did get pretty black early on. The afternoon run had a short 25-mile loop on the east side of the Motorway but the long run went down and over the Waikato river at Tuakau and back via Mer- cer before joining the short run for the trip back to the Ramarama Hall. It turned out that the afternoon route defeated a few more than in the morning but even the lost souls enjoyed their Tiki-Tour as they described it, some finding they were not on the long route after all! By general consensus it was one of the best routes we have experienced for sometime with pretty well 100% positive feed- back.
December 2020/January 2021 Page 23 2020 40th Annual Motorcycle Rally At the end of the run, Peter opened an honesty “bar” and quite a few enjoyed a spell with a beer before heading back home or to the evening function which was held in the Clubrooms in Penrose. The back-up was needed with three customers in the morning, one Royal En- field (puncture), one Panther (failed spark plug) and one Honda (still to know). At least we had one from Japan on the trailer which was comforting in a way! As noted, the prize giving dinner was held at the Clubrooms and again Lynda Spicer, very ably as- sisted by Debbie & Bob Ballantyne and Ken & Annette Foot, turned on a fantastic dinner for the forty four participants. Being the 40th Anniversary, a cake was baked for the occasion by our resident baker, Michael Watts and what a beautiful cake it was. Not risking 40 candles, we were provided with two candles, one being a 4 and one being a zero—worth remembering for your 80th if you don’t want to bother the local fire chief! Ken and Annette Foot were life-savers for us. They did the time check, assisted with the lunches and then again with the evening meal – a big thank you to Ken and Annette and also Debbie for volunteering. We also need to thank Leo Fowler who again this year acted as starter and back up, a job we struggle to get volunteers to do. Finally, thanks to our long suffering off course marshals, Dave Wakefield and Lloyd Wilson who spent a fruitless two hours down a no exit road which unbeknown to us the locals had erected a large no exit sign just around the corner that somehow we had missed and the 50% we would have caught out were saved, bar one who shall be nameless! Martin and Peter had accumulated a very gratifying pile of prizes which were handed out to the winners and then to just about everyone and apologies to those who missed out. We should mention here the continuing support of the sponsors who help us out every year: AEGIS, Castrol Oil, Botany Honda, Auck- land Harley Davidson (AMPS), Drury Motorcycles, CRC ADOS, FHP (all rally print- ing), MotoMail, British Motorcycle Parts and Tip Top. The evening was rounded off with a piano recital by Dave Tomkins which had us singing along quite well aided by a few la la’s here and there! The rally was won by Alan Macy on his very red and immaculate 1974 Norton Commando and so, to Alan, goes the honour of plotting the rally next year. He has a high bar to jump over after this one. December 2020/January 2021 Page 27 Vero International Festival of Motoring Most of you will know that the Vero Festival of Historic Motoring will now be held in 2022. The dates are January 16 to January 21 The organising Committee will be sending out a request for your expression of interest later this year. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU RESPOND to this if you are considering going. Events like this have significant budgets to manage and some of you will recall the last International Rally suffered significant losses. Whatever your view on that result, learnings have been taken and you will have read in the latest Beaded Wheels that the Manage- ment Committee will NOT accept the event running at a loss. To that effect they are looking for some surety that entrant numbers will be sufficient to make the event viable. It will not be a firm commitment and I do urge you to respond. If there is insufficient interest, there is a possibility the event won’t go ahead. This is an event not to miss, a shorter period than previous Interna- tional Rallies, in an area with some great motoring and the time of year hopefully means plenty of sunshine. So, get your mates to- gether, decide what vehicle you’re taking and plan to be there.
Page 28 December 2020/January 2021 Obituary—Maureen Belch Maureen passed away 16 November 2020, aged 89 years. She had been battling declining health in the last few years and spent most of 2020 in and out of hospital. She really wanted to make the magic 90, alas this was not to be. Maureen, along with the late Tom Belch had enjoyed rallying with motorcy- cles and latterly cars since the 1960’s, initially with the Auckland Branch, North Shore and lastly Warkworth/Wellsford Branch. Maureen enjoyed all the wonderful people and places that rallying took them but mostly she loved the time she spent with Tom. Even with her mobility failing, she attended as many rallies and other outings as she was able. She was coherent and alert up to her final days. As per Maureen’s whishes, a private family funeral was held.
