Join Catholics nationwide in celebrating Respect Life Meet Your Parish Staff Month! respectlife.org/ Meet Fr. Pat celebrate I recently asked a young student at St. Dominic’s if she knew why I wore the Roman collar. The student responded: “Sure! It is because it kills ticks and fleas for up to thirty days.” Seriously, most of you know after seven years here at St. Francis that I am a “Second Vocation” having worked for AT&T Bell Laboratories in Naperville for many years. My first pastor once said, “Since I worked at the phone company, you would think I would have gotten the call sooner.” It proves that God has a plan for each of us—even at an older age. I feel very blessed to have gotten the privilege to be a priest at this point in my life. I was raised on the south side of Chicago in a family where the parish was the center of our lives. Both parents were always volunteering. We had only one car, one bathroom, one phone, one TV for six people, no air conditioning, and we felt we were living “A Wonderful Life”. My parents had two sets of twins: Betty and Joe; my twin sister Patricia and myself (twenty-two months apart and before diaper service). Growing up, when a call came for Pat, my parents would ask the caller: the boy or girl? My twin sister, Pat (Tricia to me), who looks much younger than me, became one of my first female supervisors tor telephone operators while I started at Western Electric in Cicero as an Employment Interviewer and later held many different assignments over the years. My sister and I are still very close to this day, along with my eleven nieces and nephews that I see often. You may ask, why didn’t I become a Priest sooner? In 1968, they came out with a navy blue Pontiac Bonneville with white walls and lots of chrome. In those days, young boys were very into cars and I was no exception. I could not wait to work and get a nice car. I thought, Priesthood—Pontiac Bonneville?? Looking back, I wonder if this was not God’s plan all along. AT&T gave me great Vision business skills. I was able to grow in my passion for winter skiing and summer camping in Colorado, that remains a special place for me even today. I still ski and camp in Statement Colorado; I just do it slower. Empowering our collective I thank the Lord for the privilege to serve Him and feel a special blessing to be here at St. hearts, our faith community Francis of Assisi. It has been a time of spiritual growth and service to the Lord. It has becomes the answer to also been a time to re-calibrate how I am servicing the Lord. One day as the sister was busy about her work, the statue spoke to her and told her to hurry up to the infirmary because one of the sisters needed her right away. The sister the statue named was not one of the patients, but was actually the nurse who cared for them. The lay sister thought the nurse had seemed perfectly well a short time before, and saw no particular reason to think that she was in any danger of dying. Still, she went as she was told and found the nurse as she was dying. She had arrived just in time to summon the priest to administer the last rites to the dying nurse.
