The holidays can be especially difficult for those who are grieving. This service is designed to help us remember these loved ones and celebrate Christmas. If you have any questions please call Pastor Kim at (623) 584-2000. Our annual “Dinner for 6 or 7…” program will continue in 2022! This is a wonderful way to get to know each other. Dinners are held in members’ homes in January, February, and March 2022. The hosts provide the entrée and beverage. Guests bring a salad or dessert and/or other items as desired. Members will host for one month and be guests for the other two months. Singles and couples are invited to participate. Her contact information is available through the online church directory or by calling the church office. Please follow CDC and LOL COVID-19, health and safety guidelines. Our current pandemic situation prompts us to be flexible and creative in the format of “dinner gatherings”. This might be the year for brunch or lunch on the patio! It’s Poinsettia Time! You can order your Christmas poinsettias by using the poinsettia envelopes on the counters in the Narthex, and also in the church office. The cost is $15.00. Deadline is Wednesday, December 16. Nadaburg Schools: Supplies Needed There is a box in the donation center in the Social Hall hallway to receive needed school supplies, including crayons, #2 pencils, white and colored copy paper, lined writing paper, composition books, highlighters, Sharpies and white or colored construction paper. Thanks to all who have already given and to all who will give. To learn about ways to be helpful to the district schools, contact Jack Sellers through your church directory or call the church office for contact information. Pet Surgical Recovery (Part 2: The First Night Home) The first night home following surgery, for both dogs and cats, is a nervous one for their human guardians. Creating a proper environment goes a long way in aiding both humans and pets through the recovery process. The environment a recovering pet comes home to should be comfortable and non-accessible to other pets or children, as postsurgical pets are still influenced by the anesthesia. Place them in a confined room such as a bedroom or bathroom with the door open and a baby gate serving as a barrier; understanding that they need their privacy. It is also important that that they are observed as they rest. If that is not possible, create an enclosed area with a pen in a quiet area. Ensure that they have a comfortable place to sleep, be it on their beds or comfy blankets. Additionally, place the bedding on tile or wood flooring; pets enjoy cooling off their abdomens by stretching out on cool surfaces soothing the surgical site. Keep the bed low and prevent them from jumping. Ideally, their recovery space should be free of shelving, kitchen islands, and other elevated objects. Initially, your pet will be tired and unsteady, possible causing a fall. The act of climbing and/or jumping may irritate any stitches or painful sites. Alternatively, a large crate can be used during the recovery period. A couple of extra provisions need to be considered in making a cat-friendly recovery environment: lighting and litter. Cats having had anesthesia are unusually sensitive to light. Dim the lights in their resting area or turn them off until the anesthesia wears off. If that is not an option, a domed bed offers some escape from the light. Place the litter box in the same confined room or enclosed area. Discontinue regular cat litter for at least a week after surgery. Commercial litters can infiltrate into the incision and cause an infection, especially in male cats. Shredded newspaper and long-grain rice are suitable alternatives but require a daily cleaning protocol. Stomachs of both cats and dogs are sensitive after anesthesia and vomiting may occur. Food and water should be offered, but in smaller amounts. A dog’s first meal should be bland and easily digestible. The clinic may have provided a prescription food such as Hills ID or Purina EN, foods that are gentle on the stomach and ideal after surgery, even bowel surgery. If he does not like the prescription food, try a white meat: chicken, turkey, or cod with a side of boiled white rice. Failing that, skip the first night’s meal and offer him his regular diet the next morning. Upon arriving home, give your dog three-quarters of his normal amount of water. Avoid too much consumption at once. His system has been empty for nearly 24 hours and the sudden impact of a bowlful may induce vomiting. If he is intent on drinking hardily, ration the water and allow him a teacup full every half hour for two hours, after which he can drink freely. Offer your cat half her normal portion of both food and water when getting home. If she does not vomit, return to her regular diet the next day. If she does vomit, remove her food and leave only a small amount of water. Again, start her with a small amount of water in the morning. If vomiting continues or diarrhea begins, call the postoperative care line. Understand that it is common for cats to refuse food the night of surgery. If she does not eat, give her normal amount of food and water the following day. Questions about your pet’s behavior, health or life situation? We might be able to help. Please call Skip Rickmeyer through your church directory or call the church office for contact information. 4

Visitation Choir has started once again. We go to Sante, Brookdale, The Park and soon to Benevilla on the first and third Thursdays of each month. We have so much fun doing this. We often think we get more out of it than the residents we sing to. Barb Chase keeps us informed with reminders, etc. On Wednesday, December 1, at the Lord of Life Christmas Party at Briarwood, we will have SoSco playing flute and guitar. Sonoran Sounds will treat us to an Advent Choral Concert on Wednesday, December 8 at 5:00 pm. This all- women's group is made up of West Valley sopranos and altos, several of which are from our congregation. You'll want to hear them at this festive time. This is a freewill offering. We want to welcome the number of people who have joined the Lord of Life Music Programs: Sunday morning choirs, Saturday song leaders, JuBELLation, Visitation Choir, Glory Singers (starting in January), A Capella Singers, instrumentalists, and vocalists. We are also VERY thankful for the many of you who have made yourselves available through the years. You are amazing for bringing your time, talents, ideas, and joy as you bless us! Thank You! On Tuesday, December 14, at 3:00 pm, we will have Noel Music for and by anyone in the congregation who would like to perform a special piece without a huge audience. This can be vocalists, pianists, sax, clarinet, harmonica etc. Please come and enjoy. We'll probably be in the Social Hall. This is sponsored by our Arts and Crafts Group which only meets a few times per year. If you want to sing and hear Christmas Carols, don't overlook Christmas Eve with services at 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm, and 7:00 pm; Christmas Day (Saturday) at 10:00 am and 5:00 pm; December 26 (Sunday) at 8:30 am and 10:30 am; the following weekend, January 1, 5:00 pm, January 2, at 8:30 am and 10:30 am - that's singing Christmas Carols 44 times, if you so choose. We don't usually send congratulations to the parents until after the baby is born, therefore during Advent, we generally wait for Jesus' birth before we sing all our favorite carols (Visitation Choir will sing the familiar carols before Christmas). We are not having a Christmas Concert by our choirs this year. Some years we have a concert closer to Easter. This year we are planning a program on Wednesday and Thursday, February 23 and 24, and we will publish more on that later. On January 22, after Saturday worship, we will have outstanding barbershop choruses perform a concert at 7:00 pm. Two of our members, Marsha and Bill Shaw, are members of these national choruses performing for us. Look for more information on this in the weeks to come. Blessings for a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s. You bless so many people including Dave & me. —Gloria Lien, Minister of Music 5

The Congregational Council is responsible for the financial matters of the church. To accomplish this, the position of Treasurer is of prime importance; it ensures the Council can make informed and prudent decisions. Dean Lewellen has served admirably for a total of sixteen years and has done an outstanding job. He is stepping down from the position at the end of November. I personally thank you, Dean, for your service in this essential position. Taking Dean’s place is Jerry Solomon. Jerry brings a wealth of experience to the job, and I look forward to working with him. Thanks for stepping up, Jerry. As I write this, the 40th Anniversary Committee is in the final preparation for the gala dinner commemorating 40 years of the church. A special thanks to the committee for their work in hosting the dinner and in all the events leading up to this finale. We will soon be voting for candidates to replace members of the Council who have reached term limits. Each year, a part of the Council ‘terms out’ and is replaced. Being on the Council is a great way to serve the church, to get to know the workings of the church, and to make new friends. If you are interested in serving in the future, please make your desires known to Pastor Steve during the coming year. —Gary Kakert, Council President 01 Heidi Hartman 10 Ellie Lasiter 19 Dean Bender 24 Dorothy Gaver Frank Stoll 11 Carol Akason Jerry Gorden Bob Sauer Marie Taylor Mary Anderson Barbara Heller Diane Seegers 02 Jeanne Turner Pat Eide Shirley Saathoff Donna Kirk 03 Nellie Brown Suk-King Yiu-Gering 20 Jerry Brantner 26 Phyllis Nelson Nancy Hewes 12 Thelma Brown Sue Johnson Lis Trent 04 Chris Harris Jim Haller Dick Ruthenbeck Kevin Meyer Anrie Rehmann Natalie Ray Gayle Snyder 28 Marilyn Carhart Martina Watkins 13 Lorna Boline Gwen Mekus 29 Donna Ruck John McCorkle Wayne Houdek 21 Ann McAlpin 30 Marsh Adams 05 Janie Nordling 14 Gary Boline Nancy Seibert Chuck Saddoris Dianne Wuethrich Kathy Greenberg Jim Oksol Peter Sersland Kathleen Derrick 15 Mason Minnes 23 Bob Bjornaas Paul Atkins 06 Sharon Walters Kathy Yagami Dona Brauer 31 Dean Carlson 07 Jim Hackbarth Jane Brambilla Merry Ewert Shirley Cash Darnell Lundstrom 17 Peggy Bittner Carol Gonyer Carol Schiff 08 Ellen Danielsen Carl Burchill Carol Koffel Dave Melby Jerry Gaulke Bob Rasmussen 18 Jim Braun Cindy Smith Sandy Christensen 09 Laurey Hanson Diane Landers Sue Pedersen Carole Oien Audrey Reinhart George Schaefer 10

It can also be a season of over-indulgence and busy travel schedules, which ultimately could leave your waistline and health at risk. Here is a list of holiday health tips for seniors: Keep Moving: You want to burn all the extra energy (calories) you are consuming, make sure to keep moving! That might mean taking a walk after a big dinner, taking stairs instead of elevators, and finding active things to do with family and friends. Prevent Infection: There are a handful of ways to fortify your immune system against infection during cold and flu season. These include getting appropriate vaccines in a timely manner (for Covid, influenza, pneumonia, etc.), as well as practicing above-and-beyond hygiene like washing hands frequently, disinfecting commonly used surfaces like doorknobs, and taking hand sanitizer and tissues with you on the go. Avoid Excess: It’s not just rich food and countless sweets that can pack on the pounds this holiday season, alcohol can also be a major culprit. You can still enjoy your favorite beverages, just be mindful of how alcohol consumption affects your body - it can dehydrate you; it puts added strain on your liver and kidneys, and it adds hundreds of unnecessary calories to your diet. Practice moderation, keep up with water intake while imbibing, and avoid high-calorie beers and drinks mixed with sugar-laden additives. Plan for Exercise: It’s easy to let your workout routine get sidelined by holiday activities and/or travel. Plan ahead to keep up with some form of physical activity (at least 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week) …i.e. by scheduling daily walks, packing resistance bands to use at your destination. Don’t forget to pack the aids which support healthy pain-free exercise too like a brace to manage knee swelling or compression stockings to promote good circulation. Prevent Falls: No matter where your holiday fun takes you, make sure you are guarding yourself against falls by utilizing mobility aids recommended by your doctor, asking for assistance when walking over ice or snow, and employing helpful transfer tools when getting in and out of the car (like swivel seats and car caddies). Stick With Your Sleep Schedule: While it is fun to stay up late catching up with old friends or family, getting off your regular sleep schedule can be dangerous. Not only has it been shown that even as little as a few nights of sleep deprivation can impair cognitive functioning, but lack of sleep has also been linked to dehydration, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance. As much as possible, stick with your routine bed and wake times and aim to get 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep a night. Make Healthy Cooking Choices: Over-consumption of salty, sugary, fried, processed, and fatty foods can exacerbate existing health conditions, amplify joint inflammation, and lead to unwanted weight gain. Make healthy cooking choices this holiday season by substituting saturated fats (like butter) for unsaturated fats (like olive oil) and replacing salt with flavorful spices in savory dishes. —Lisa Nicholson, Parish Nurse Resource: seniordirectory.com 11
