The Lay of the Land What makes the Gambier Islands special is the unique synthesis of tall volcanic mountainous islands within the protection of a fringing reef. Sure the Australs are similar, but the water is cold and the weather is often nasty. Bora Bora also boasts towering peaks inside a reef, but you’ll have to photoshop out all the hotels and compete with plentiful tourists for beach space. The Gambier Island group is comprised of the main island of Mangareva with the principle village of Rikitea, 5 or 6 sizable nearby inhabited islands, and another dozen or more outlying motus ringing the lagoon. Population about 1500 people. We thoroughly enjoyed the fresh French baguettes available at 0500 every morning (0700 if pre-arranged with baker “E’O.”) Pamplemousse (Grapefruit), bananas, avocados, limes, mangos, papayas, and coconuts are plentiful but other fruits and vegetables are available only when they arrive every few weeks on the supply ships from Papeete. Apparently, the local populace prefers to buy frozen foods from Papeete rather than cultivate them locally. We Invitiation to the Gambiers were pleased to see that the local university is training young people how to farm the fertile land. The others include the Austral Islands to the south, the Society Islands, including Tahiti, the Tuamotu Atolls, and the Marquesas Islands to the far Northeast. All of these island groups have their own charm and attraction but the Gambiers offer a nice blend of everything Polynesian. Getting there OK, I’ll be honest. It’s a bit of a schlep to get to the Gambiers. Allow 18 to 23 days of tight reaching (45 – 90 degrees apparent) if you sail from Kaneohe in March (according to the pilot charts). A couple of weeks gets you to the Marquesas and another week or so on to the Gambiers. You’ll have to cross the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), better known as the doldrums, where the NE trades meet the SE trades a few degrees north of the equator. If you’re lucky, the ITCZ will be a well defined band of squally weather about 100 miles wide. Unlucky sailors find a poorly defined, squall-infested blob of lousy wind that consumes them for several days of slow sailing and motoring. A stop-over at Nuku Hiva or Hiva Oa in the Marquesas allows re-provisioning as a well as a formal port of entry into French RIKITEA ON THE ISLAND OF MANGAREVA Polynesia. Gambiers continued singing is wonderful. Also on the don’t miss list is a visit to the nacre carving school. Nacra is the oyster shell. After polishing the mother of pearl to a high shine, the artists use a very fine Dremel tool to carve intricate designs into the shell. This art is a specialty of the islands. Most yachts seem to prefer the quiet anchorage off the town of Riketea where provisions, bread, and slow internet are generally available. The richest rewards, however, are to be found exploring the many anchorages. Your anchor will like the deep sandy bottom, but you may have to buoy your anchor chain to avoid damaging the nearby healthy and beautiful coral. We found our electronic charts (Navionics, CMap, and iSailor) all to be excellent. While you can certainly sample the Gambiers in a couple of BIG FUN IN RIKITEA French baguettes baked daily and sometimes twice daily cost less than $1USD and the Mangarevan locals are overtly generous with their fruits and vegetables – normally refusing payment. Over 6 weeks, Pazzo visited all the main islands in the archipelago and several of the motus as well. Navigating the lagoon through the maze of suspended oyster baskets (typically 3 meters below the surface) demands constant vigilance. On more than one occasion, concerned pearl farmers zoomed to our rescue to help us out of their maze before we destroyed their gear with our propeller. Brother John and I spent a day with a local welder repairing our Spade anchor after the damn thing rusted out, rendering itself useless. John was masterful in engineering the repair but the welder was a bit rough in his execution. We found a warm welcome wherever we sailed – even on Ile Kamaka, the private island we visited to deliver beer to the charming young French couple keeping watch over the Island. They made it clear that visitors are not welcome on their island, but appreciated the beer and sent us SUNSET IN THE GAMBIERS off with a delicious papaya.
