Moore River News June 2021 Page 9 S o many of us have a lot to thank the local volunteers of St John Ambulance for. I am taking this opportunity to write as they have not sent in a monthly report this month. Because of the volunteer dedication over so many years St John have rewarded our lower coastal area with a brand new ambulance station with TWO ambulances, St John Ambulance training rooms and I think you will agree a beautiful Lancelin & Coastal District garden. (Woodridge sub branch) The current team have training at least once a month, and serve our community well. Behind the scenes there have always been a team of volunteers who man the phones to get the crews out, clean the ambulance and the station. These people are just as valued as the men and women who save your lives, or bandage you up. Below is a picture of just one of those volunteers—Dave Stroud. He has been inducted as a member of the Order of St John for his Service to Community. Kim Beasley represents the Queen in W.A. So Dave is very honoured. Thank to the Guilderton The Order of St John began in Jerusalem Country Club for and has a fascinating history which can be hosting such a read on the internet. moving Anzac Day

Moore River News June 2021 Page 14 We would like to take this opportunity to thank Lancelin Healthy Community Forum & supported by ZONTA Perth Northern Suburbs for the wonderful Parent/Carer workshop on Wednesday 19/5/21. Our presenters, Carolyn, Nina & Catherine gave us a very rewarding & powerful presentation. It certainly is a changing world and our children certainly have a lot in life to manoeuvre! Parents on the other hand need to keep up with the changing world of internet, school etc. Of the small group that attended this night, they were very impressed with the presentation & felt they learnt some very valuable skills to carry them through the mine field of parenting in today's world. Moore River News June 2021 Page 18 GUILDERTON COMMUNITY LIBRARY celebrates 15 years of operation In July 2021 As this milestone approaches it is important to reflect on where it all started. When you consider that it all began from one person’s dream and determination, and continues due to the drive of our library coordinator Madeline Henshaw and the generous efforts of volunteers. Three of the current volunteers have been at the library since its inception. That dream came to fruition when the shire allowed us to use the old first aid post. This was followed by a big clean up and paint job of the facility and the fitting out with book shelves - some donated by the shire and others made by Graeme Henshaw. Our first major fund raising raffle was a water tank donated by Brian Watson. The enthusiasm for the library grew quickly and our tiny building, approximately measuring only 7.5 meters x 2.5 meters very quickly became too small to accommodate our expanding donation of books. In 2009 the library doubled in size and was again extended in 2013, all with the support of volunteers and the majority of materials being donated. We have a community full of talented people who were prepared to share their skills and contribute to the community. Donations of books started with Madeline’s own books, and today due to our fundraising with book stalls and previously the very successful annual Trash and Treasure, we are able to purchase new books and accommodate book requests by our diverse group of members. The library is a wonderful example of a self sufficient and Lower Coastal nurturing community. It has become a meeting hub that brings people together to share not only a love of reading, Neighbourhood but to build friendships and share stories of life’s little ups and downs. Moore River News June 2021 Page 24 Labor confirms plans to diminish regional representation 17 May 2021 The Nationals WA have slammed the Premier and WA Labor during Parliament this week for misleading regional voters of their intention to introduce so-called one-vote-one-value electoral reform prior to the State election. During a Legislative Council debate, Member for the Agricultural Region Hon Martin Aldridge MLC said the official State Government response had made it clear Labor was pursuing mathematical equality ahead of effective regional representation. “Not only did the Premier repeatedly mislead voters about his intention to silence regional voices, but Labor’s hand-picked panel of Perth academics has given voters just weeks to make a submission on an issue with major long-term ramifications for our democratic process,” he said. “The Ministerial Expert Panel chaired by Malcolm McCusker QC does not come to this issue with clean hands, having long advocated for greater metropolitan control of the Parliament. This raises serious questions as to whether the committee will give fair unbiased consideration of all views.” Mr. Aldridge said effective regional representation was essential to addressing regional issues such as health and education outcomes, serious injuries and deaths on our roads, cost of transportation and access to reliable telecommunications that unfortunately affect regional communities more than metropolitan areas. “It was also damning that no Labor regional MP contributed during the debate yesterday – this Party continues to claim it represents regional interests but will quickly align to abolish it when it fits their city-centric agenda.” The Opposition also questioned why the Attorney General announced that a Discussion Paper would be released by the Committee two weeks into the consultation process, leaving only two weeks for submissions to respond. “Publishing a discussion paper halfway through the process is further proof of Labor’s intention to ram through electoral reform no matter what submissions are made,” she said. “The one week extension of the submission deadline announced today is tokenistic and the whole process should be seen for what it is, a complete farce. “We urge all Western Australians to speak up on this important matter, it’s not right for Labor to use its massive majority to ram through reforms that will significantly impact our State, in particular regional Western Australians, for generations to come.” Submissions to the Ministerial Expert Panel now close at 5pm on Tuesday 8 June 2021.
