The Juniper Estate vineyard - then named Wright’s - was planted in 1973. Together with Vasse Felix, Cape Mentelle, Cullen, Moss Wood and Woodlands, it is one of the founding vineyards of Margaret River. In 2020 we are celebrating 47 years since those vines were planted. The Estate vineyard is home to the original 21 acres of cabernet, shiraz, chardonnay and semillon - all of which remain unirrigated. We have two other sites that contribute to the narrative – Metricup Road vineyard and the southern Higher Plane vineyard. The three properties are exciting in their differences, but they are linked by a common thread: exceptional fruit. Our vineyard team, headed by Ianto Ward (pictured), have a simple philosophy to the way they farm: sustainable, organic practices and respectful intervention to produce the very best fruit possible. It’s this approach which saw Ianto collect the Trophy for the ‘Viticultural Excellence Award' at the 2019 Margaret River Wine Show and was also a finalist in 2017. Watchful eyes in the vineyard do not fall on deaf ears in the winery: Mark Messenger and his team painstakingly craft each batch. Mark has been our Winemaker since 1999 and 2019 marked his 21st vintage at Juniper. The wines Mark makes are a combination of his deep passion and thirst for excellence. We have very limited stocks available of our Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz Magnums (1500ml bottles), sealed under cork and wax. EsTate Cabernet Sauvignon-Magnums 1500ml Mark Messenger patiently waits a minimum of 4 years before releasing our flagship ‘Single Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon from the 1973 dry-grown Wilyabrup vineyard. Made from hand-picked fruit, the Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine crafted with the utmost care and attention. It is made in a style that will reward aging for at least two decades. This unique vineyard site is responsible for winning the ‘Wine of Provenance’ Trophy at the 2016 Margaret River Wine Show. This wine is a true representation of our vines’ provenance and their consistency throughout the years. Suggested 15 – 20+ years cellaring. 2004 - RRP $240 / CLub $216 The 2004 vintage was an outstanding vintage for Margaret River with near perfect growing conditions. Drink: 2019 – 2028. Trophy - Wine of Provenance 2016 Margaret River Wine Show - Awarded to the estate that produces the best wine consistently over 10 years, with three vintages submitted. (2004, 2008 & 2014) “Flowery aromas of berry, spice and a touch of mint; a fine, medium-bodied palate, with powdery, fine tannins sprinkled throughout its length in estate style; restrained fruit and extract.” 93 points James Halliday “Deep red, mature rim, quite earthy/spicy nose, good warm depth of fruit, has more depth than 2001 but same rather smooth/sweet style.” 16.25/20 - Stephen Spurrier MW Decanter Magazine 2007 - $220 RRP / Club $198 The 2007 vintage had a warm February and a long Indian summer allowing for an exceptionally long ripening in 2007, ideal for Cabernet tannin ripening. Drink: 2019 - 2028+. 94 points James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion “Purple-crimson; typical of the somewhat severe but clear-cut expression of cabernet in Margaret River this vintage, with pure blackcurrant, earth and cassis fruit; here the tannins are evident but are ripe and in balance.” Page 7 | Autumn 2020
Estate Shiraz - Magnums 1500ml The Juniper Estate Single Vineyard Shiraz is made 100% from our Estate dry- grown vines planted in 1973, and hence is a single vineyard wine representing the best portions of wine that reflect the nature of the site and the weather conditions of the vintage. The grapes are hand-picked in several batches and following barrel maturation in batches for 18 months, individual barrels are selected to create the final blend. Structure, complexity and depth of quality fruit are the key goals with cellaring potential of at least 10 years. 2004 - $216 RRP / club $194.40 The 2004 vintage was a standout for Margaret River and this Shiraz has all the hallmarks of a great vintage. Harvest conditions were near perfect with mild sunny days and cool nights, which allowed the grapes to ripen fully while maintaining their natural acidity. The concentration of fruit and ripe tannins that you expect from Wilyabrup grapes are there in balance with quality oak. Drink: 2019 - 2024+. “A strong wine; has the focus and depth which the Juniper Crossing lacks, even though it is only still medium-bodied; spicy, black cherry and blackberry fruits; fine tannins, good length. Drink 2024.” 94 points James Halliday 2007 - $186 RRP / Club $167.40 The 2007 vintage was a terrific one with plenty of sunshine for close to perfect autumn ripening, producing flavour and tannin in lovely balance. 2007 proved to be one of the best years for Shiraz in Margaret River for some time. Drink: 2019 - 2027+. Gold Medal 2010 Royal Hobart Wine Show Gold Medal 2009 Margaret River Wine Show “Strong purple-crimson; a very robust, full-bodied wine, standing apart from the normal Margaret River style, with strong savoury overtones to the black fruits; not extractive per se, but certainly needs time. Drink 2022.” 91 points James Halliday Page 8 | Autumn 2020
2013 The Tribute We didn’t set out to make a single block wine but a number of factors influenced the decision. First, after 18 months in barrel this batch stood out in the barrel selection tasting as being a cut above the rest. It was decided that it would be sacrilegious to blend away its uniqueness. The next, and more profound, influence was the fact that the founder of Juniper, Roger Hill, tragically died a couple of months after the 2013 vintage. Roger’s vision was to make a truly great Margaret River cabernet. This single block cabernet sauvignon is the culmination of the vision and experience of many. A tribute to the vineyard, the region and the man, RNH. Immediately engaging on the nose, the aromas are floral and fruit focused with violets, raspberry, red and black currants, cherry, perfectly ripe plum along with cassis, bay leaf, black olive and dark chocolate – all the wonderful cabernet descriptors with elegance, poise and concentration. The super fine palate is silky in texture, long, even and not a hair out of place. While appearing suave it is in no way a pretender with its underlying power and depth of flavour. This is a rewarding wine now, while those with time on their side can look forward to a drinking window of several decades. Total production 44 dozen. Very limited stocks. Maximum 2 bottles per person. 98 points James Halliday, The Weekend Australian Magazine "The black, charcoal and ash of the label – and the name – reflects the tragic death of Roger Hill, founder of Juniper Estate, shortly after the ’13 vintage. By chance, a single batch of cabernet picked on 4 Mar had been recognised for its potential even before it was picked. One could write reams about the wine but still not do it justice; sheer perfection as the ultimate Aus cabernet will have to do. No score is adequate or appropriate. Drink to 2043. Screwcap. $150." 96+ points Gary Walsh, The Winefront.com, July 2018 "I had Mark Messenger over to my place today, tasting through a vertical of Cabernet Sauvignon. He’s just done 20 years at Juniper. Impressive. And a lovely chap too. Very modest and unassuming. Smart, too. I believe this is cellar door only and a couple of barrels from a patch of the vineyard that’s up on a hill, and deep in gravel. Flat out beautiful, pitch-perfect Cabernet. Cassis, chocolate, pencils, liquorice, violet – perfume – finesse – luxury. Medium bodied, silky tannin, well-rounded, but densely packed and ‘minerally’, acidity is fresh but so well settled, black fruit, cocoa, but also redcurrant and floral fragrance wafting about, red fruits again bob up on a long and very fine finish. No dips. A smooth joy ride from start to finish. Feels very young and primary, even as a five year old wine, and most certainly its best days are well ahead of it. Wonderful. Drink 2021-2035+." 18.6/20 Barry Weinman, Fine Wine Club.com Oct 2019 "Lithe and fresh, with red berry fruit and hints of spice from the supple, savoury oak. This is all about balance, with the fruit allowed to take centre stage. May score even higher in time, and is also very approachable now." 96 points James Suckling.com Australian Report 2019 "Lots of tar and spice on the nose, combining beautifully on the palate with black fruit and chocolate. Full body, round and silky tannins and a long and flavourful finish. Classy. Drink now or hold. Screw cap." Page 9 | Autumn 2020

An exceptional cabernet, as intense as it is elegant with great mouthfeel from superfine tannins. Drink to 2045." 98 points Halliday Wine Companion 2020 Listed in the 'Best of the Best 2020" Varietal Winners - Cabernet Sauvignon "This estate block was planted in '73. The wine includes 3.9% petit verdot, 2.5% malbec and 1.6% cabernet franc, all hand-picked, up to 36 days on skins, matured for 18 months in French barriques (50% new). An utterly exceptional cabernet, as intense as it is elegant with great mouthfeel ex superfine tannins. It's the lightness and brightness that are the candles on the cake." 96 points Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.com, Feb 2020 "92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3.9% Petit Verdot, 2.5% Malbec and 1.6% Cabernet Franc, 50% new oak, and 100% Mark Messenger in style. From a single vineyard, planted in 1973. It’s cooler, tighter, & more controlled than some recent vintages, none the worse for it. Dense wine of traction & intensity, dark cherry, blackcurrant, aniseed, seaweed, dark chocolate, dried herbs, and baking spices. It’s fresh, almost chalky tan- nin of wide grain and grip, fruit sweetness with tobacco savoury things happening. Finish is long, tannic and firm. It has energy & concentration. Cellaring potential is high. Drink: 2022 - 2035." 96 points Ray Jordan, The West Australian Wine Guide 2020 "Oh boy. This must be one of the most refined and stylishly expressive Cabernets yet from Juniper. It’s leaning more towards medium weight, such is the balance and poise, yet there is immense Margaret River power. Fine chalky tannins contribute to a silky smooth palate of wonderful texture. Outstanding. Due for release in May 2020. Cellar:18 years." 95 points James Suckling.com July 2019 "An exceptionally defined & concentrated wine with deeply ripe, cabernet black cherries and plums with roasting herbs and a tarry edge. The palate has majestically strong and rich tannins with black- cherry and dark-chocolate flavours, holding the long finish. A blend of 92% cabernet sauvignon, 3.9% petit verdot, 2.5% malbec & 1.6% cabernet franc. Drink now." 18.7/20 points Barry Weinman, The Western Suburbs Weekly, October 2019 "This is so seductive, with supple red berry fruit, silky, savoury tannins & oak. Yet behind the veneer, there is powerful fruit that just needs time to unwind. Souring acidity adds life, while the cedary oak adds a pencil shavings note on the very finish. Full of joy, this is a brilliant wine." Page 10 | Autumn 2020
2016 Single Vineyard Shiraz Produced from 1973 planted dry grown shiraz vines from our Estate vineyard in Wilyabrup hand picked in three small batches. Texture is built into the wine via extended maceration (101 days on skins for one small batch) and aging on fine lees with occasional stirring. 18 months in barrel with 33% new French oak. Raspberry, red and black cherry, blackberry, mulberry and a hint of black pepper with smoky vanilla and mocha coming from the oak. A concentrated palate packed with flavour such as cherry chocolate, wild berries along with cinnamon; fine tannins provide support for the fruit. Structure, complexity and depth of flavour are the key to the cellaring potential of at least 10 years. Less than 250 dozen produced. A wine of consistent provenance and pedigree, the 2014 vintage was rated Ray Jordan's “Best West Australian Shiraz” scoring 97 points, while the 2015 vintage received 95 points from Halliday and Ray Jordan. 95 points Halliday’s Wine Companion 2020 "Hand-picked, 4-day cold soak in 1t open fermenters and open top barrels with various times on skins, matured for 18 months in hogsheads (33% new). Unusually powerful in Margaret River terms, yet is no more than medium-bodied thanks to its silk and velvet texture; very long finish." 95 points Ray Jordan, The West Australian Wine Guide 2020 "Another cracking-good Shiraz from this small vineyard. So concentrated and powerful with a driving inner intensity that explodes from the middle palate with a burst of herbs and spices from dark plummy, savoury fruit character. The wine gets up to 18 months in French oak. The dry savoury finish is a feature. Classy wine. Cellar: 15 years." 2016 Single Vineyard Malbec Hand-picked from our dry-grown estate vineyard in Wilyabrup. The 2016 vintage was superb in Margaret River; plenty of summer sunshine for close to perfect ripening and mild autumn days for long hang time on the vine. This weather allowed for expression of flavour in the grapes and the development of fine tannins in the skins and seeds leading to structure and balance. Vibrant magenta in colour, the nose is awash with blue, red and black berries, black cherry and plum with background aromas of violets and liquorice. The plush palate is full of expressive, juicy fruit neatly balanced by a thread of saline acidity and fine, savoury tannins. Try it with duck or even a burger, it’s that versatile and delicious. Cellar 5-10 years. Less than 150 dozen produced. Limited stocks. Exclusive to Cellar Door. 94 points James Halliday, Wine Companion 2020 "Juniper Estate, it seems, can do no wrong, even with the challenges of single varietal use. The colour is youthful, the plum fruit with a gently savoury edge, and the absence of any new oak is a positive, not a negative." 93 points James Suckling.com Australian Report 2019 "A very deep impression from the outset here with red and dark plums, as well as a fragrant, pastry-like edge of vibrant complexity. The palate has a very succulent, smoothly rendered feel that delivers a long, plush and smoothly groomed finish. Drink or hold." Page 11 | Autumn 2020
2018 Estate Chardonnay 100% estate grown - sourced from both our Wilyabrup & Forest Grove vineyards. A mix of clones, Gingin (70%) and 95 (30%), to provide acid structure and fruit complexity. Hand-picked on different dates, gentle whole-bunch pressing directly to barrel (45% new) and ‘free range’ yeast are all aimed at producing a naturally balanced wine with a cellaring potential of up to 10 years. Smoky flinty aromas are derived from the wild ferment and complement the lemon, grapefruit, stone fruit, pear, roasted hazelnut, cashew and freshly baked bread notes. While there is an element of restraint and poise, the palate has wonderful fleshy stone fruit texture and flavour along with citrus, pear and roasted nut characters with smooth mouth-watering acidity guiding the long finish. 91 points, Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate, Jan 2020 "A blend of Gin Gin and Clone 95, barrel fermented and aged in 45% new French oak for 10 months, the 2018 Estate Chardonnay delivers assertive citrus flavors underscored by smoky oak and streaks of pencil shavings. It's medium- bodied and tightly wound but with enough generosity to offer hints of white peach and pear before finishing with lime zest and spice. Drink 2019 - 2027." 2018 Cane Cut Riesling When at optimum ripeness for a dry-style riesling, the canes bearing the fruit are cut. We leave the fruit to dehydrate over the course of 2-3 weeks. The evaporation that occurs leads to the sugar in the grape intensifying and giving it the distinctive golden syrupy qualities. Riesling is a very good fit for wines of this style as the high natural acidity balances the sweetness and makes the wine refreshing. Aromas of floral citrus blossom, green apple, pear, cumquat, marmalade, honey, almond and nougat. Expect succulent flavours glazed pear and citrus, creamed honey, nougat, marmalade, lemon curd and ripe apricots. Brilliant with a cheese board or a lighter, fruit or cream-based dessert. Less than 150 dozen produced. 375ml. 94 points Ray Jordan, The West Australian Wine Guide 2020 "Riesling is a super variety when it’s made into a dessert-style wine like this. The sweetness is achieved by cutting the cane to halt the moisture flow to the fruit and therefore concentrating the sugars in the dehydrating grapes. This delicious dessert wine achieves sweetness without being palate-cloying thanks to the fine-finishing acidity. Citrus marmalade flavours. Cellar: 8 years." 2017 Estate Semillon Margaret River semillon is very distinctive and at Juniper we are aiming to produce a fine, elegant and complex wine with medium-term cellaring potential from this wonderful variety. ‘Free range’ yeast, barrel-fermentation in French oak and maturation on yeast lees are all employed to build texture and structure. The 20% new oak provides a touch of smoky complexity that complements the fruit characters and maintains elegance in the wine. Only 76 dozen produced. New release. Exclusive to Cellar Door. 2016 Aquitaine Rouge [Red Blend] The Aquitaine blends are a nod to Bordeaux French-inspired but with a Margaret River look and feel. They take their name from Eleanor of Aquitaine – ‘Aquitaine’ is where Bordeaux is located and is home to blends of semillon/ sauvignon blanc along with the classic five red varieties, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, petit verdot and cabernet franc. A medium-bodied Margaret River red blend with flesh, complexity and an array of dark berry flavours. A generous mouthfeel, flows into a very fine and supple tannin profile. The result is a compelling wine that delivers exceptional length and flavour. Drink this over the next five years while your Estate Cabernet mellows in the cellar. 95 points Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.com, Feb 2020 "Unleash the power of the blend! Strange to say, that even though I’ve rated the 2015 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon a little higher, this is the wine I prefer. What a beautiful thing this is. Raspberry, black cherry, pencils, mocha, violet and liquorice. It’s compact, dense, and ‘mineral’, has energy and freshness, depth of fruit, a ferrous feel with lithe and well-knit tannin, and a long perfumed finish. Love it. It’s claret time. Drink: 2020 - 2034+." 95 points James Halliday’s Wine Companion "49% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot, 14% malbec, 9% petit verdot and 7% cabernet franc. The sure hand of winemaker Mark Messenger comes through all the Juniper & Higher Plane wines, this typical of his ability to mix and match fruit, tannin and oak. It's a mouthwatering medium-bodied wine, deep cassis and plum fruits establishing the terms of reference." 2018 Aquitaine Blanc "The white grapes semillon and [Oaked Sauvignon blanc semillon] sauvignon blanc have a long history together. Our hand-picked and barrel-matured sauvignon The marriage of these blanc 63% and semillon 37% is a departure from the varieties originated in blends more typical of the region. 2019 Small Batch Fiano Fiano is an Italian grape variety that is well-suited to our southern vineyard. Bright and aromatic like a pinot gris, with the complexity and texture of modern chardonnay. Refined and textural, and clean and crisp. 100% Estate grown from our Forest Grove vineyard. 30% of the Fiano grapes were whole bunch pressed straight to barrel and underwent barrel fermentation in aged oak, followed by four months on lees during which it underwent bâtonnage to enhance the natural texture. The remaining portion was fermented in tank resulting in a brightly fruited, clean blending component. A brightly aromatic wine offering great clarity of varietal character. Nashi pear, honeydew melon, grapefruit, hint of cinnamon and hazelnut all intermingle elegantly on the nose. The mouthfeel is smooth, fine and focused with fleshy fruit texture like biting into a juicy ripe pear with other flavours of salted nougat, fresh hazelnuts and citrus like acidity making for a long and satisfying finish. Wonderful as a stand-alone drink or a perfect accompaniment to fresh seafood. Since our first vintage in 2016, we have won four trophies with this exciting new variety. 93 Points Stuart Robinson, The Vinsomniac.com, 8th December 2019 “Canteloupe melon, Nashi pear, Vanilla and creamy nougat hints adding to the appeal. Spiced nuances, a fleshy fruit presence that positively grows in stature across the palate. There’s a briny edge, citrus acidity that flows and carries the fruit long across the palate. An excellent example of the variety, has it found a new home in Margaret River?” Tasted on: Tuesday 26th November, a Flower to Leaf day 92 Points Steve Leszczynski, Qwine.com, 3rd December 2019 “There’s so much to like here. The pretty aromas and the textural feels reaching out to embrace your soul. Great stuff! All the fruit came off one vineyard with 30% whole bunch pressed straight to barrel seeing four months on lees. A wonderful introduction of Nashi pear and apricot skin perfume opens the account. Soft white peach flesh plus a dash of lemon juice add pleasure. A fine scattering of cinnamon spices add another element before a long finish takes hold. It’s a wonderful drink. Drink now." Page 14 | Autumn 2020
2019 Small Batch ROSÉ The estate grown grapes (69% Merlot, 21% Shiraz, 10% Malbec) were picked at a ripeness level specifically to make a Rosé which ensured that the colour was the classic pale copper hue and the flavours were delicate, refreshing, bright and lifted. These expressive characers give the wine vitality, and the barrel-fermentation (neutral oak) and aging on lees (for five months) provide body. The wine was fermented to near total dryness. The colour says just drink me while the nose of raspberry, red cherry, currants, blueberry and sarsaparilla. Crunchy red fruits with a lovely texture long and satisfying finish. Enjoy it on its own, or with a wide range of tomato based dishes, anything spicy and great with pizza. Exclusive to Cellar Door and Wine Club. New vintage release. Page 15 | Autumn 2020
2016 Small Batch Cabernet Sauvignon The wine is made predominately from cabernet sauvignon planted in 2008 on our Metricup Road vineyard in Wilyabrup. Small additions of Bordeaux varieties, as well as the influence of the vineyard site, help make for a juicy, earlier drinking style, but still with that line and length expected of the variety and region. There’s a purity of varietal fruit here on the nose with black and red currants, raspberry, cherry and mulberry backed up by oak matured characters of vanilla biscuit, coffee and cinnamon. The more you swirl the glass the more the wine offers. The fruit on the nose is also displayed on the palate with lovely depth and length of flavour while the finely structured tannins ensure long aging and pair perfectly with a juicy rib eye or lamb roast. 94 points James Halliday, The Weekend Australian Magazine, September 2019 "An 86/5/5/4% cabernet sauvignon, malbec, merlot and petit verdot blend; handpicked, 10-14 days on skins, matured 15 months in French barriques (20% new). High-quality fruit deftly handled for the price. The cabernet tannin structure gives the wine its ticket to the future. Drink to 2031." 93 points James Suckling.com Australian Report 2019 "The purity to the blackcurrants and sage and leafy undertones is really impressive. Lots of foresty undertones permeate the palate, which is sleek and acidity-driven yet dense and nicely structured, thanks to the firm tannins. A blend of 86% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot, 5% malbec and 4% petit verdot. Drink now or hold." 2018 Small Batch Tempranillo A single vineyard wine made from five different clones of tempranillo (hand-picked) from our southern vineyard. From a mild vintage the aromas tend towards more red florals, red cherry, blueberry, raspberry, mulberry and a mix of wild herbs, spice, liquorice and sarsaparilla. The palate is smooth with juicy red and black berried fruit, cherry pip, dried herbs and spice flavours with medium density and fine dusty mouth coating tannins. Enjoy now and for at least the next 8 years. Vegan friendly. Since the first vintage, this wine has accumulated 4 Trophies and 6 Gold medals. 91 points Stuart Robinson, Vinsomniac.com, 15.1.20 "Inclusion of 5% Shiraz; spends 15m in oak, no new. A darker manifestation of inky blue fruit: blueberries, cassis, smattering of violets. Feels light on entry, fleet of foot, before powder fine sweeps across the palate. Nigh chalky in feel, it feels as though it morphs in the palate, expanding first and then contracting to a fine length. Persistent in nature, latent black fruit intertwined with savoury structure." Page 16 | Autumn 2020
2017 Crossing Shiraz 85% of the grapes for this wine are sourced from our 1973-planted Wilyabrup site - one of the oldest dry- grown vineyards in the region. The old un-irrigated vines don’t produce a lot of fruit anymore, but the quality remains outstanding. The 15% balance of Shiraz comes from our cooler, southern vineyard and is a different clone (PT15) to Wilyabrup. It brings more blueberry fruits and a wonderfully bright hue and aromas. All hand-picked and 14 months in multiple oak formats with 10% new French. Welcome to berry town as this wine has a wonderful mix of raspberry, mulberry, blueberry, cherry plus plum, violets, cinnamon, and smoky vanilla. As you’d expect the palate is juicy and succulent - packed with fruit spice vanilla and a bright finish. So drinkable now but will cellar for at least 8 years. Trophy for "Best Shiraz" & Gold Medal 2018 Margaret River Wine Show 93 points James Halliday, Wine Companion Magazine, Dec 20 "The majority (85%) estate, dry grown 44yo vines at Wilyabrup, the balance from the estate vineyard at Forest Grove. Complex vinification, 14 months in French oak (10% new). Bright crimson hue; a fresh vibrant, medium-bodied shiraz, unusually with red fruits dominant. Drink to 2027." 4.5 stars 2017 Shiraz Championship Tasting, Winewise "If you want this wine offering the most flavour for your dollar, here it is. It offers ultra-fresh blackberry aroma and flavour and is beautifully balanced." 92 points Q Wine Reviews "A super delish Shiraz screaming value. Bright red fruit is rolled through a crust of crushed black pepper. Give it some time to settle and the fruit nudges it's way past all that peppery spice. Medium bodied, delivery is lush and moreish highlighted by buckets of blue fruits and plums. Some char and elegant licks of vanilla and milk chocolate keep the enthusiasm levels high. Give it a decant or a good swirl and you're winning. I could be persuaded to add another point. Drink now to six years." 91 points James Suckling.com Australian Report 2019 "Exuberant brambleberry essence, blueberry tart, mint and eucalyptus. Medium to full body, soft and juicy tannins and a succulent, rounded finish. Drink now." Page 17 | Autumn 2020
2018 Crossing Chardonnay Single vineyard wine from our southern Forest Grove vineyard. We left the Crossing Chardonnay on yeast lees for an extra 5 months which has helped to create more complexity in the wine. Flinty, brioche, roasted almonds and toasted sourdough notes in addition to grape derived aromas of peach, nectarine, pear and citrus. The palate is generous with juicy fleshy stone fruit and citrus and silky smooth, with gentle, refreshing acidity. This is a Chardonnay for drinking and enjoying now and for the next five years. 92 Points Campbell Mattinson, The Winefront.com, 24th Jan 2020 "Mostly from the Forest Grove vineyard to the south of Margaret River. 70% is barrel fermented, the remainder into tank. The concentration here is very good. It could open the batting. It tastes of grapefruit and pear with gentle infusions of smoky bacon. A touch of quince too. It has texture and weight but it still manages to race along. The longer I looked at this the more I liked it; a good sign. Drink : 2021 - 2026." 91 Points Stuart Robinson, The Vinsomniac.com, 7th February 2020 "It spends 9m in French Oak, of which 15% is new. Stonefruit, leesy, bready notes; the 2018 guise saw an extra 5m on lees to build complexity. Fairly solid and voluminous wine, of generosity and substance; Stonefruit, tropical fruit hints, subtle spice. Lees stirring post-ferment has built texture. It's of moderate length, more for now I'd suggest, perhaps for short term cellaring only, to 4 years." 90 Points, Steve Leszczynski, Q Wine Reviews, 13th December 2019 “Solid Margaret River Chardonnay at a respectable price. Rock solid. Generous with soft edges, it’s quite well balanced as it muses about. Barbecued peach to taste and peach skin feels. It’s a little slippery if anything on delivery but the lemon rind and vanilla cream do their best to nudge that to the side. Some roasted cashews are tucked in behind not wanting to make a fuss. The kind of wine you could order off a list at a wine bar and sit contently. Drink now to five years." 4 star rating Fergal Gleeson, Great Wine Blog Instagram 25.1.20 "Brilliantly executed and well-priced Chardonnay from Mark Messenger at Juniper Estate. You get purity of fruit and complexity which comes from detailed winemaking including the use of multiple clones and yeasts, barrel fermentation and some extra time ageing on lees. More than we have a right to expect for $25! " Page 18 | Autumn 2020
2019 Crossing Semillon Sauvignon Blanc The semillon (52%) comes from our Wilyabrup vineyards and the sauvignon blanc (48%) is grown on our southern Margaret River vineyard in Forest Grove. A small portion of the semillon is fermented in older oak contributing mouthfeel and flavour. Pale in green colour, this expressive wine shows aromas of pear, gooseberry, melon, citrus, green apple and passionfruit with background notes of smoked cashews and fresh herbs. The mouth filling palate is smooth and very textural, full of juicy fruit characters with subtle hints of herbs and spices. Crunchy acidity makes for a long & satisfying finish. Vegan friendly. Silver Medal - 2019 Wine Show of WA 91 Points Stuart Robinson, The Vinsomniac.com, 6th February 2020 _ "It's a 52/48 blend of the two respectively. A small portion of the Semillon (5%) was fermented in barrel. Additionally there was stirring of the lees to build extra texture. Well it's certainly an expressive number: Citrus, grass and herb, veering toward a suggestion of Gooseberry over blackcurrant leaf and passionfruit for some fruit relief. The texture on the palate evident, giving a fullness and feel, softening the acids without sacrificing altogether. A phenolic pinch on the back palate adds to the memory of the wine and delivering length. It's a very well worked wine." 2018 Crossing Sauvignon Blanc The fruit is grown on our southern vineyard in Forest Grove, ideal for growing aromatic white varieties. This gratifying wine has an abundance of tropical aromas, jasmine blossom, zesty lime, the expected punchy gooseberry and passionfruit, all enlivened with a touch of herbs and spice. In the mouth it is delicate, juicy and crisp - with lush, delicious fruit flavours and a long, refreshing, citrus acid finish. Limited stocks remain. Discontinued product. 93 points & Special Value Star - James Halliday "Jumping out of its skin with its array of fresh tropical/passionfruit /aromas and flavours. No elaboration needed." 1.10.19 Page 19 | Autumn 2020
2017 Crossing Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2017 was an excellent vintage for cabernet sauvignon and this bright and lively wine reflects this. Predominately cabernet sauvignon (73%), merlot (16%), cabernet franc (8.5%) and petit verdot (2.5%) complete the blend. These lesser components bring a fleshy juiciness and complexity to the wine. Vibrant purple-red in colour, this wine shows bright aromatic fruit characteristics of raspberry, blackcurrant, blueberry, mulberry, red and black cherry along with cassis, chocolate, vanilla bean and hint of dried herbs. The palate is smooth and juicy with red and black currants, plum, red and black cherry flavours while balanced, fine-grained tannins provide a long and even structure. This wine is all about the fruit so is approachable now but will enjoy a 5 to 8 year cellaring potential. Gold Medal - Perth Royal Wine Show 2019 94 points James Halliday's Wine Companion 2020 "73% cabernet sauvignon, 16% merlot, 9% cabernet franc, 2% petit verdot matured for 14 months in barrel (15% new). It's hard to believe the price of this gift horse. It's complex and rich, with blackcurrant/plum fruit, cedary oak and soft tannins all on the same page. Ready already." 90 points Ray Jordan, Top 100 Reds, The West Australian, July 2019 "A smooth & elegantly structured blend displaying ripe berry characters, fine chalky tannins & a gentle hint of oak. Hangs together harmoniously making for quality budget-priced drinking." 90 points James Suckling.com Australian Report 2019 "Pretty plum & currant aromas and flavors with some citrus undertones. Medium body, soft tannins. Easy finish. A blend of 73% cabernet sauvignon, 16% merlot, 8.5% cabernet franc and 2.5% petit verdot. Drink now. Screw cap." 91 points Stuart Robinson, The Vinsomniac, July 2019 "The Crossing range from Juniper Estate represents extraordinary value, particularly in a region not necessarily known for it. Approachable, varietal, and regional. Varietal, yes in a blend, in a blend that the region is known for. It offers that heady mix of bay, bush, cedar and black fruited elements that invite. Subtle savoury notes that imbue a sense of depth into the mix - not at the expense of character. Finer tannin, delicate length that exudes a mix of the fruit and savoury. A winner in my eyes." 91 points Huon Hooke, The Real Review, Mar 2019 "Deep red/purple youthful colour, the bouquet showing bright cassis and violet cabernet aromas, and the taste is supple and intense, bright, fresh and lively yet not at all shrill or callow. Very smart young cabernet. And good value. Drink 2019-2029." Page 20 | Autumn 2020

2014 Higher Plane "The Messenger" (less than 50 dozen produced) Hand-picked, hand-plunged & hand-crafted. This wine is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, malbec, cabernet franc. Named after our winemaker Mark Messenger, who carefully crafted this blend to highlight the wonderful dark fruits and fine tannins that are a hallmark of red wines from our cooler, southerly Higher Plane vineyard. 2014 – another classic Margaret River vintage even with some rain in mid March which freshened up the reds beautifully and allowed for long slow even ripening. Balanced with depth of flavour and polished tannins. No problems aging this beauty. This wine was always going to need time in bottle to reach its full potential and we’ve done most of the hard work for you. Aromas of violets, ripe raspberry, red cherry, red and black currants, mulberry, blackberry and liquorice with cedar, vanilla bean and a hint of slated caramel from the oak. The palate is layered with juicy fruit and super fine tannins support the mouth feel from start to a vibrant finish. So ready to enjoy now 2020 through to at least 2035. “Winemaker Mark Messenger has a knack with cabernet sauvignon and its mates..." James Halliday 96 points & Special Value Star - Halliday Wine Companion 2020 “A blend of 50% cabernet sauvignon, 25% each of malbec & cabernet franc representing the best barrels of the vintage. Time in bottle has seen some of the complexities of full development starting to appear, dried herbs, earth and black olive alongside the symphony of berry fruits. Drink to 2044." 93 points James Suckling.com Australian Report 2019 "Like the finesse and structure to this with its firm and refined, chewy tannins and a long and vivid finish. Lots of blackberry and currant flavours. Driven finish. Shows intensity. A blend of 50% cabernet sauvignon, 25% malbec and 25% cabernet franc. Drink or hold. Screw cap." 2017 Higher Plane Reserve Chardonnay 2017 was a cooler vintage which resulted in picking nearly a month later than usual. Hand picked from a single vineyard in small batches, gently whole bunch pressed directly to barrel (40% new). Wild yeast and low intervention techniques are aimed at producing a complex yet naturally balanced wine. Cellaring potential of up to 10 years. Aromas of nectarine, peach, jasmine, saline/oyster shell notes and brioche along with oak derived nutmeg and subtle smoky-toasty vanilla. The palate is smooth with a linear chalky mouthfeel due to the citrus-like acidity. Stone fruit, citrus and spice flavours are engaging with subtle complexities and a structured, long finish. (Limited stocks) Gold Medal, Perth Royal Wine Awards 2018 97 points Top 100 - James Halliday, Halliday's Wine Companion 2020 "Whole-bunch pressed direct to barriques (40% new) for wild fermentation (no mlf) and 10 months maturation. Vibrantly fresh and bright. White nectarine/peach and grapefruit in equal parts, oak rustling softly in the wind. Elegance is its second name. Superb balance too. Drink to 2030." 2010 Higher Plane Reserve Chardonnay [museum release] Now 10 years old, we offer the museum release 2010 Chardonnay exclusively to members, that has been carefully aged and cellared, for you to savour now. The 2010 Higher Plane Chardonnay is a single vineyard wine produced from the fruits of our southern vineyard. It is a wine representing the parcels that best reflect the nature of the site and the weather conditions of the 2010 vintage. The vintage was a near perfect one for Chardonnay, the summer was warm but not hot, mild conditions meant even ripening periods, slow and steady, which retains great natural acidity. (Very limited stocks) 95 points James Halliday's Wine Companion 2011 "Mid gold bright; restrained and complex bouquet, with grapefruit, cashew and charcuterie on display; the palate is tightly wound, linear and exhibits a textural, grippy component in harmony with the poised and polished fruit." Page 23 | Autumn 2020
2013 Higher Plane Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Single vineyard cabernet from our southern Forest Grove site. Purple red in colour, this wine is bursting with fruit characters of spicy plum, blackcurrant, mulberry, choc-mint and cedar-vanilla oak. The richly fruited palate is plush and shows terrific concentration from low yielding vines. Resolved, supportive tannins from the long, even ripening, ensure extended cellaring potential. 96 points, James Halliday Wine Companion 2018 “There’s an etheral quality to this: nothing forced, just perfectly ripe fruit shining through. Exquisitely perfumed, the oak seamlessly integrated, the tannins filigreed and the palate supple yet quite detailed and elegant. Sheer joy. Not unreasonable to start drinking it now. Drink to 2025.” 95 points, Ray Jordan's Wine Guide 2018 “These Cabernets off the Higher Plane vineyard in recent years have been superb. The more southern cooler climes seem ideal, with the vine now more mature and delivering consistently good fruit. Such impeccable balance and poise with a fine structure supporting the rich fruit. Cellar 10 years.” 94 points, Campbell Mattinson - The WineFront, Sept 2018 "It’s labelled as cabernet sauvignon – rightly so – but it also includes small amounts of cabernet franc, merlot, malbec and petit verdot. What I like about this is that it seems rich-enough and ripe-enough but it also feels cool. Cool herb and dust-like notes, fresh acidity, a wintergreen aspect almost, and yet the core is all pure blackcurrant and chocolate, a touch of leather perhaps too. Generous. Svelte. Powerful in a mellow way. And yet true to its more southern Margaret River origins. Very handily priced too. Drink: 2020 - 2030." 94 points, QWinereviews .com, April 2018 "The pleasures of Margaret River Cabernet. A superb wine right here. Sleek and sumptuous, this is beautifully weighted as it moves and flows to every crevice in the mouth. The fruit moves in a silky fashion not too dissimilar to melted chocolate with blackberries and blackcurrants at the wheel. Fine spices, flecks of vanilla and some herbal influences keep this classy. A mighty fine wine. Drink now to ten years+." Page 24 | Autumn 2020
2019 Higher PlanE Slow A single vineyard field blend (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc & Fiano) is unusual in it's long and 'slow' rolling fermentation method with five weeks on skins. The blend is: 41% Chardonnay (hand-picked 8th March), 29% Sauvignon Blanc (hand-picked 15th March) and 30% Fiano (hand-picked 3rd April). A riot of fruit aromas spill from the glass, including grapefruit, passionfruit, peach, melon, pear, and nectarine along with a floral note of orange blossom and a suggestion of beeswax. The palate is chalky, minerally, savoury & textural, with a refreshing dryness to the finish as a result of the time on skins. A really intriguing and satisfying wine which may be enjoyed as an aperitive, or accompanied by anything from Asian fusion to pasta. The three varieties were picked weeks apart but fermented together on skins in the same fermenter over a 5 week period. A 6 day cold soak was followed by a long, slow ferment with gentle extraction of both flavour and phenolics but with preservation of freshness – not dogmatically ‘skinsy’ or ‘orange’. Pressed to old 500L puncheons to finish ferment and stirred from time to time to build both texture and weight. The wine was settled in barrel. Unfined, unfiltered and vegan friendly. Less than 100 dozen made. 2019 Higher plane FumÉ Blanc Sauvignon Blanc, but not as you know it. If you love Chardonnay, you will like this. Hand-picked from a single vineyard, 50% of this is made in a similar method to Chardonnay which adds complexity and intrigue. The other 50% made in tanks to retain freshness and crunchy acid. This is a beautiful example of a Fumé Blanc made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes pressed and fermented in French oak barrels, which adds complexity and intrigue. Aromas of lemon sherbet, pink grapefruit, citrus blossum, guava, passionfruit, fresh pineapple, sage and watermelon with a subtle smoky vanilla. Brace yourself, as a riot of flavours explode in your mouth, whilst the wonderful fleshy fruit texture offers richness, and the saline, mineral acidity hones a long satisfying finish. Passionfruit, nashi pear, citrus, and nut meal flavours combine with a long mouth feel culminating in a crisp and refreshing finish. This is a wine suitable to drink with delicate seafood to more robust white meats and roasted vegetables. Vegan friendly. 2017 Higher plane Forest Grove Chardonnay A single vineyard chardonnay with classic southern Margaret River characters of pear and white stone fruit with generosity and texture. An expressive style of chardonnay with immediate appeal showing jasmine, white stone fruits, citrus, spice and delicate oak influences. Delicious flavours of melon, peach, and pear combine with fleshy texture, oyster shell, acidity and spice to form a perfectly balanced wine. The finish is fine, long, savoury and moreish. 20% new French oak for 8 months, 10% MLF. 93 points James Halliday’s Wine Companion 2019 “No shortage of acidity, this is a livewire. It crackles with ginger and lemon, white stone fruit and lemon curd, some lees and oak add depth but ultimately a more linear style as it races off to the finishing line. Drink by 2026.” 92+ points Campbell Mattinson, The WineFront, Sept 2018 "Margaret River Chardonnay made with quality in mind for less that $30. That’s a good start in itself. It’s frisky. It’s flavoursome. It has a keen line of acidity but there’s plenty of flavour and mouthfeel; it’s a very good offering, and it will be better again once it’s had another year or two in bottle. It tastes of grapefruit, pear, white peach and flint. It’s very good/excellent value. Tick. Recommended. Drink: 2020 - 2024+." 92 points Ray Jordan, The West Aust Wine Guide 2019 "A fruit-driven chardonnay, with oak playing a subtle supporting role. Displays vibrant stone fruit and fig-like characters. The texture has been created with some time on lees. It’s balanced and refined with a lovely mouthfeel. Cellar: 5 years." 91 points The Vinsomniac.com "Poised, balanced, it sits just-so on the palate, at ease and with itself. A mere spread of texture, lends a little weight and width. Grapefruit acids and a squeeze of lemon deliver a delicate length, a gentle tug and pull. Delightfully seasoned oak here on this Chardonnay from Margaret River. It's all peach skin with Vanilla seasoning on the nose and it delivers beautifully. Chardonnay this good for $25? Yes please." 2018 Higher plane Forest Grove Chardonnay [pre-release] New vintage is available as a pre-release, exclusive to members. Page 26 | Autumn 2020
2019 Higher plane Fiano Fiano is an Italian grape variety that is well-suited to our southern vineyard. Since our first vintage in 2016, we have won four trophies with this exciting new variety. Bright and aromatic like a pinot gris, with the complexity and texture of modern chardonnay. Refined and textural, and clean and crisp. 30% of the grapes were whole-bunch pressed to barrel for fermentation and aged for six months on lees with fortnightly stirring to enhance the natural texture. These techniques are similar to how Chardonnay is made, giving this Fiano texture and depth. The larger remaining portion was fermented in tank on skins, keeping the fresh, bright components before blending back together to form the final wine. Lovely varietal aromas of preserved lemon, spiced pear, honeydew melon, hazelnut and peach are on offer on the nose. The palate is mouth-filling and textural with flavours of juicy melon, pear, lemon and salted butter, while a beautiful saline thread from the natural acidity provides a refreshing finish. Wonderful as a stand-alone drink or a perfect accompaniment to fresh seafood. New vintage release! 2018 higher plane Syrah [shiraz] 100% single vineyard shiraz from our Higher Plane site. We use the PT15 clone, an early ripener and better suited to the cooler Forest Grove vineyard. This newer clone was close-planted at a metre apart which makes the vines compete - working harder for nutrients, reducing the canopy vigour and making better quality fruit. Fragrant violet aromas backed by blackberry compote, blueberry, plum, and dark cherry along with ground spice and white pepper. Loaded with ripe fruit flavours, spice, black pepper and slightly grainy tannins from the whole-bunch portion. A fresh, vibrant style of syrah that is ready to enjoy now or for up to six years from year of vintage. 90 points Ray Jordan, Cellar Talk, The West Australian, August 2019 "A juicy & generous medium-bodied shiraz, hence the name syrah. Spicy plum and savoury notes on the nose & palate. Has a strong, chalky tannin influence holding it all together with a dab of oak. Drinking in the shorter term." 90 points Steve Leszczynski, Q Wine Reviews, August 2019 "Buckets of happiness lie within this more than approachable Syrah from Higher Plane. Hand-picked fruit with 10% whole bunches, it sees 8 months in large format oak. Black pepper and char leap out from the outset. Some charred steak and a granite like feel through the mouth adds a minerally interest. Dark plums and mulberry fruit sit beneath that blanket of savoury goodness with touches of aniseed. Bright red apple acidity charms the finish with a sprinkle of pepper for good measure. Good stuff. Drink now to five years." 90 points James Suckling.com Australian Report 2019 "A straightforward syrah with dried berries, chocolate and smoked meat. Medium body, light tannins and a tangy finish. Shows plenty of fruit and flavour. Drink now." Page 27 | Autumn 2020
