Again this year, the Tulpehocken Area School District conducted a program entitled “Celebrating Successes.” The

district.
Additionally we recognized teachers of the year for elementary and second-

staff for their hard work, efforts, and dedication.

                                             TRACTOR DAY
Tulpehocken Junior/Senior High School’s annual Tractor Day was held on May 24, 2019. This
year, the Tulpehocken FFA sponsored a “Best In Show” contest. Tractor owners could register their
tractor for a chance to win a gift card and their name on a plaque to be hung in the Tulpehocken
Agriculture Department wing. Each vote submitted cost fifty cents, with all proceeds going toward
the Tulpehocken Agricultural Department’s tractor restoration project. This year’s Best In Show
winner was Billy Fantozzi! The Tulpehocken FFA thanks all participants and looks forward to more
support and entries for next year’s contest. (See page 8 for more pictures.)

SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNER
                             Greetings Tulpy Family!!
Where did the summer go? I swear it felt like yesterday that I was just pulling out shorts
and flip flops and in the next month or so we will be trading them out for sweatshirts and
jeans. As depressing as the thought may be of leaving the warm weather behind, it is also
exciting to think that a new school year awaits. We will get to meet a new group of
exciting Kindergarten faces and at the same time, our seniors will begin the last leg of their
journey before they ride off as Tulpy Alumni!

At the graduation ceremony this past June, Mr. Quirk referenced one of my favorite books
in his speech, “Good to Great”. Within the book, author, Jim Collins, talks about what
makes companies great companies. He says, “Greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness, it turns out,
is largely a matter of conscious choice, and discipline.” While Collins discusses the idea of great companies, the
concepts he presents can be directly applied to our lives. In order to be great, one must make a mindset change just
as companies need to do. We are destined to be great, but too often we choose to be ok. The problem with staying
ok is that we never realize our full potential and accomplish all that we could. We need to look beyond our current
ambitions and push ourselves to be the best we possibility can.

Whether you are a Mac or PC or iPhone or Android person, no one can deny that Apple Computer went from
being an ok company in the 1990s to something great today. Apple continues to revolutionize the technology
market with new products and ways of thinking. Their drive for greatness is what makes them so successful. A
company that was once on the verge of financial collapse became the first trillion-dollar company.

What holds us back from being the next Apple Computer? What holds us back from being great? The answer is
as simple as looking in the mirror. Each of us has the power within to be great! Now is the time to do it. I chal-
lenge Tulpehocken to be the greatest! There are so many great things already in our schools and community, but
    let’s make them even greater.

Imagine what can be accomplished for our kids when everyone is moving towards greatness! This year don’t
settle for ok or good. Achieve greatness!

     Tulpy Pride!

                                       BCTC STUDENTS OF THE QUARTER
Each quarter, BCTC instructors select a student from their program whose attitude, skills, and knowledge gained
during that particular quarter is above and beyond the standard. The student shows initiative and integrity in per-
forming their tasks and is, overall, the best student for that quarter.

The students receive a certificate of recognition and are honored as a group at a breakfast reception for the morn-
ing students, and the afternoon students are honored at a luncheon reception. The students are also photographed
and their portrait is displayed prominently throughout the school.

TULPEHOCKEN WELCOMES OUR NEW FOOD SERVICES DIRECTOR

Greetings Trojans! I feel so privileged to join the Tulpehocken Family as the Food Service Director for the 2019-
2020 school year. I come to the Tulpehocken School District with over 12 years of food service management experi-
ence and have worked in a K-12 setting as a Food Service Director for the past five
years. I am passionate about serving students fresh, nutritious meals, and I feel that
good nutrition and a full tummy are key factors in helping a child be successful in
school.

My home is just outside of Orwigsburg where I live with my husband and two
daughters. I enjoy traveling whenever possible, spending time outdoors, and searching
second hand shops for hidden treasures.

I feel confident that the 2019-2020 school year is going to be a delicious and
nutritious one, and I can’t wait to see all the smiling faces of our Tulpehocken
students in the lunch line.

    Warm Regards,
    Jillian Bergman

                                    WHAT’S HAPPENING AT PENN-BERNVILLE
This year has flown by! There were so many wonderful things to recap that happened at Penn-Bernville. Field day
was a huge success for all grade levels, and we managed to have two beautiful, rain-free days. Students and staff
cooled down with a little help from Kona Ice, sponsored by our PTO. The sixth grade students were transported into
Wonka land for their 6th grade dance, which connected to our 6th grade Musical. Thank you to both organizations at
Penn-Bernville and Bethel for brining such a wonderful evening together for our graduating students. We are also
celebrating an incredible first year of our Watch D.O.G.S program. Thank you for the teacher support and all of the
fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, and brothers who came into PB and spent a day with us!

PENN-BERNVILLE PTO PUTS THE SPRING IN FLING
Penn-Bernville PTO hosted their annual Spring Fling event in May. This event welcomed students and families
to the PB gym and cafeteria for fun and games. Local businesses attended to help bring the fun, such as Bounce N
Style, the Perk Up Truck, and ROG with their smile booth. Toilet paper toss, boat races, face painting, make your
own cotton candy, and Rita’s were just a few of the special treats that families could enjoy. Without the PTO these
events would not be possible. Thank you Penn-Bernville PTO for sponsoring amazing events for our students and
their families!

SUMMER ORIENTATION PROGRAM FOR NEW JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS
                   AUGUST 20, 2019 – JR/SR HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM @ 9:00AM

For many students the transition from the elementary school to the junior high school, is difficult. Many students
feel overwhelmed by the various tasks and responsibilities and become quite anxious. Some of their concerns in-
clude: getting to class on time, finding their lockers and remembering the combination, finding the cafeteria and
bathrooms, remembering which class to go to next, fear of getting lost in the building, keeping up with the classwork
for multiple subjects, and social issues, including peer pressure, cliques, and bullying.

In an effort to help students make a positive transition to the Junior High School, we have developed a Summer
Orientation Program. The Junior High Orientation is voluntary and parents are welcome to attend. During the ori-
entation, students will spend time in the Junior High building, learn the location of their homeroom, preview their
class schedule, meet teachers, locate their locker, and practice the combination. Students will be given a sample
agenda sheet and will write down assignments posted in the various Junior High classrooms to help prepare them for
the increased demands of 7th grade. Students will also have a chance to meet their new classmates and engage in fun
activities as they learn about the Junior High.

The Summer Orientation Program will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 from 9:00 am. to 11:30 am in the
Junior High Building. We will assemble in the Junior-Senior High Auditorium at 9:00 am and proceed to the Junior
High. Refreshments and a brief orientation to the Junior/Senior High Cafeteria will be held from 11:00 to 11:30 am.
We look forward to seeing the new 7th grade students and any new students to the district 8th grade students on
Tuesday, August 20, 2019.

 Sincerely,

Christopher Hamrick Susan A. Burns, M.S.W.
 Jr/Sr High Principal School Counselor

                                               TITLE I APPLICATION

It is the intent of the Tulpehocken Area School District to apply for Title I Federal Programs Funding for the 2019-
2020 school year. Title I funding is provided to individual school buildings to provide supplemental core academic
instruction, support, and parental involvement. The funding is awarded to schools based on the number of students
in the building who qualify for free and reduced lunch. In 2019-2020, both Bethel Elementary and the Tulpehocken
Junior-Senior High School qualify to apply for this funding.

Bethel Elementary plans to continue to use the funding to support the Response to Instruction and Intervention pro-
gram by providing staff, resources, and materials to enhance the reading and math programs in the building. Bethel
will continue to operate as a Schoolwide Title I Building meaning that the funds can be allocated to support all stu-
dents in math and reading.

The Tulpehocken Junior-Senior High School plans to use the federal funding to support students in the junior high
and high school with targeted research-based reading interventions. The secondary building will operate as a Targeted
Title I Building meaning that students will be evaluated and placed into the specific reading interventions based on
multiple measures of performance.

The success of all of our students is our highest priority. Title I funding helps us to provide supplemental instruc-
tion and support for our students who are in need of additional support to be successful.

                                                                                                                          5

TULPEHOCKEN ENVIROTHON WINS 2019 BCCD PAINT THE RAIN CONTEST
On April 26, 2019, members of the Jr/Sr High Envirothon had the opportuni-
ty to take a field trip to the Berks County Conservation District for their annual
Paint the Rain Contest held in conjunction with their Seedling Sale. The Paint
the Rain Contest involves getting talented and creative students throughout
Berks County involved in painting one rain barrel per school to represent their
passion for nature. The Tulpehocken barrel was primarily designed by fresh-
man, Kyla Ebersole.
Each school’s rain barrel arrived in mid February and students had to submit
them by the end of April. The theme this year was “Life in the Soil, Dig Deep-
er.” Every person who attended the Seedling Sale event had the chance to vote
and bid on their favorite rain barrel, gain knowledge from many different ven-
dors, grab a bite to eat at the food trucks, and purchase plants or sapling trees.
Many agencies were present, including the USDA, Penn State Master Garden-
ers, Penn State Master Watershed Stewards, and the Army Corps of Engineers.

JAZZ FEST SHOWCASE SOME OF OUR BEST
The High School Jazz Band and Junior High Jazz Lab both attended several jazz festivals this past spring with the
goal of sharing their music with fans of jazz across the county! Most importantly, they heard and learned from the
amazing talent presented by other Berks County schools and profes-
sional groups. The Jazz Band headlined for the “Dave Stahl Big Band”
during their February shows at the Hebron Social Hall in Lebanon.
The Jazz Band, shown in the picture was at the “Doc Mulligan Jazz
Festival” held at the Miller Center for the Arts in Reading on Sunday,
April 7, 2019. At this event, our jazz lab sax section received the
“Outstanding Sax Section Award” and one of our alto saxophonists,
Leah Zielinski, grade 9, received the “Outstanding Sax Soloist Award.”

                                        INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT (IPM)
 Dear Parents or Guardians:
The Tulpehocken Area School District uses an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach for managing insects, rodents,
and weeds. Our goal is to protect every student from pesticide exposure by using an IPM approach to pest management. Our
IPM approach focuses on making the school buildings and grounds an unfavorable habitat for these pests by removing food and
water sources and eliminating their hiding and breeding places. We accomplish this through routine cleaning and maintenance.
We routinely monitor the school buildings and grounds to detect any pests that are present. The pest monitoring team consists of
our school personnel. Pest sightings are reported to our IPM coordinator who evaluates the “pest problem” and determines the
appropriate pest management techniques to address the problem. The techniques can include increased sanitation, modifying
storage practices, sealing entry points, physically removing the pest, etc.
From time to time, it may be necessary to use chemicals to manage a pest problem. Chemicals will be used only when neces-
sary, and will not be routinely applied. When chemicals are used, the school will try to use the least toxic product when pos-
sible. (Applications will be made only after school hours.) Notices will be posted in these areas 72 hours prior to application
and for two days following the application.
Parents or guardians of students enrolled in the school may request prior notification of specific pesticide applications made at
the school. To receive notification, you must be placed in the school notification registry. If you would like to be placed on the
registry, please notify the district in writing. Please include your e-mail address if you would like to be notified electronically.
Please send requests to: Tulpehocken Area School District, 27 Rehrersburg Rd., Bethel, PA 19507, Attention: Heston Frey.
If a chemical application must be made to control an emergency pest problem (ex: stinging insects), notice will be provided
by telephone to any parent or guardian who has requested such notification in writing. Exemptions to this notification include
disinfectants and anti-microbial products: self-containerized baits placed in areas not accessible to students and gel type baits
placed in cracks, crevices or voids.
Each year the District will prepare a new notification registry. If you have any questions, please contact Heston Frey, IPM
Coordinator at 717-933-4611 ext. 1041.

                                   ASBESTOS HAZARD EMERGENCY RESPONSE ACT
In accordance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), The Tulpehocken Area School District has
conducted inspections of all the School District buildings for the presence of Asbestos Containing Building Materials (ACBM).
An asbestos management plan for each building was developed detailing the location and condition of all ACBM along with the
short-term actions to be taken to protect building occupants. These management plans are available for review by any interested
person in either the District Administration Office or at the individual School during normal working hours.
AHERA regulations require a re-inspection every three years by an accredited building inspector. This triennial inspection
was conducted during 2018.

                                         WHAT’S GOING ON IN NHS?

NHS finished the year with two big events. In May we celebrated Teacher Appreciation with our annual “Teacher
Appreciation Luncheon.” The luncheon is planned and served by NHS members. Teachers are the focus of the day
and members serve snacks and do any tasks teachers require. This years theme was Super Hero. The members
decorated the HS faculty room superhero style and also wore superhero attire.

On June 6th we celebrated graduation! This year NHS graduated 15 seniors. We wish all these students the very
best as they leave Tulpehocken and begin life’s new journey.

2019 MAWA WRESTLING

Tulpehocken Wrestling served it’s community well at the recent Western Regional Qualifier of the Mid Atlantic
Wresting Association. Tulpehocken qualified five out of six wrestlers in the elementary division and one in the open
division (HS Coach Bill Chapman qualified at Juniata).

     Qualifiers:
Jayce Schaffer, Rhys Schaffer, Caleb Schaffer, Abramm Schaffer, Troy Ruffner
David Bortz, Coach Chapman (Open Division)

The wrestlers then went to the York Expo Center to wrestle in the
Regional Tournament which includes schools as far west as Pittsburgh
and as far south as Virginia. Jayce and Caleb Schaffer both won their
first match, but were eliminated with two loses in the wrestle backs.
Rhys and Abramm went on to defeat all their opponents, in a very
challenging competition, to claim First Place and the right to proceed
to Eastern Nationals. Coach Chapman placed sixth after wrestling
some hard fought matches to contend for Nationals. (top four places
move on to the next round). Coach Chapman was there to coach and
support David Bortz a Tulpehocken Senior, who placed fourth and
will travel to Salisbury, MD. to compete in Eastern Nationals along
with the Schaffer brothers.

     Congratulations to Tulpy wrestling!

as the new principal of Penn-Bernville Elementary School and to join this wonderful school
community. I can assure you that I share in this school community’s commitment to caring for
your children each day while providing them with a safe, engaging learning environment.

together outside whether that is at the beach, at a campground, or just in our backyard. We are board game lovers, puzzle

Philadelphia Eagles every football season.
