Convention Highlights Goodbye, COVID! Aloha, Propane! The Louisiana Propane Gas Association is excited to host a joint convention for our sixth year with the Alabama Propane Gas Association at the Hilton Hotel in Pensacola Beach, FL June 27-30, 2021. Since we all had to miss out on our fifth year together due to COVID, we are excited to be able to join together once again in fellowship! 2020 was challenging for everyone so we hope you will be able to take advantage of this unique opportunity and join us for a spectacular event in 2021! The convention will start Sunday evening with the Welcome Reception sponsored by Supplier members from both states. After light hors d’oeuvres and drinks, the rest of the evening is on your own to enjoy dinner and catch up with other members. As always, feel free to join us in the Hospitality Suite (see location in your registration packet) to enjoy the view...and share your views! On Monday, we will start off with a few safety training presentations by Propane Education & Research Council (PERC), Vets 2 Techs and GeneratioNext Propane Pros. LPGA dealers will earn two hours of continuing education credits for attending all presentations, but all registrants are encouraged and welcomed to attend as well. A Solution to the Industry’s Workforce Challenge-One of our industry’s biggest challenges is an aging workforce, particularly in service. For decades the service technicians, installers and drivers have been our most important point of contact when it comes to interacting with our customers. Often times their role could be likened to a first responder, endearing the industry and company to the consumer. It is clear that maintaining this workforce is essential to increase the capacity to service our customers in the future and to positively impact customer retention. Thus, securing a new generation of service professionals is not only important – it is critical. Learn how GeneratioNext Propane Pros and Vets 2 Techs have worked together to solve this issue - bringing you, your next hire! Immediately following these training sessions, the Board of Directors from each association will host their meetings before adjourning for an afternoon and evening of “On Your Own” activities and an “On Your Own” Dinner. But plan to join us later that evening for our Dessert Extravaganza, Reverse Raffle and Silent Auction-you need not be present to win, but you will want to be there for all the fun and excitement! All registrations include one raffle ticket per person, but additional ones are available to purchase! All funds raised will support the David Reaves and Don Haden Scholarships in Alabama and the Marie Daniel Scholarship in Louisiana. Tuesday offers options galore! Join Captain Eddie Lively for a six-hour deep sea fishing trip on a 55’ charter boat, Lively One II, and win prizes for the largest and most unique catch...or win prizes while hacking out some frustrations at the Chris Connally Memorial Golf Tournament. This 18-Hole Championship course, The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, is as challenging as it is beautiful. Bring a team of four, suggest your own playing partners, or we will place you on a team for this Scramble- format Tournament. Another family-favorite option is Hangin’ on the Beach. Enjoy a full day of fun in the sun in our exclusive, designated area and hang with some of the best people in the propane business. Remember to bring plenty of sunscreen! We wrap up our convention Tuesday night with our “Aloha, Propane!” President’s Dinner. Wear your best Hawaiian gear as we prepare to relax in an island paradise! We will have live Hawaiian entertainment, a limbo contest and more! Bill Mayo Ralph Poole APGA President LPGA President 10 Alabama Propane Gas Association | May / June 2021

Power Generation Delivers Reliable, Low-Cost Operation that Businesses are Demanding T he recent power grid failures in Texas and California are making us all rethink our energy choices. With the arrival of spring and the promise of a robust building season, there is no hotter topic than consumer demand for reliable power in the face of weather emergencies and overtaxed grid performance. Propane can help builders deliver more resilient homes and buildings as well as provide vital standby power. A growing stable of high-tech propane generators, combined heat and power (CHP) units and microgrid systems offer residential and commercial customers what they crave – whole-building standby protection at an affordable price. Survey confirms problems, concerns Research validates that commercial and industrial customers are particularly eager to find ways to protect businesses from skittish power grids that gash productivity and profits. A 2018 survey of facilities and energy managers of commercial and industrial businesses across the United States found that 50 percent of companies experienced a power outage that lasted more than an hour in the past year. Eighteen per- cent experienced a loss of more than $100,000 as a result of their worst outage. That same State of U.S. Commercial and Industrial Power Reliability report by S&C Electric Company found that 70 percent see current power reliability as a cause for concern, and 40 percent would pay premiums to improve it. A robust 71 percent al- ready own or plan to develop alternative energy sources to supplement their current provider’s generation and power reliability. Joe Calhoun, associate director of busi- ness development at the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC), says it adds up to a promising untapped opportunity to expand propane sales. “In today’s climate, there’s a world of opportuni- ty with commercial power generation, especially in portable solutions and microgrids. Customers want more power and more reliability in its performance – something propane can deliver,” Calhoun says. Generators, CHP, microgrids When the power inevitably gets knocked out, standby power keeps heating and cooling, lighting, refrigeration, and other critical build- ing amenities in operation. More than 20,000 22 Alabama Propane Gas Association | May / June 2021
portable generators are sold each year. But most of them run on dirty diesel, adding the common problem of fuel degradation to the list of customer concerns. Today, more businesses are considering an option that’s both cost-efficient and environmentally friendly — a com- bined heat and power (CHP) unit. A propane-powered CHP is an engine powering a generator to produce electricity. It’s great for the bottom line because it reverts the waste energy it generates back into the building for space and water heating. Unused electricity can also be sold back to the electric company. Larger, more long-term solutions using propane to pair with other distributed energy systems (solar panels, wind turbines, CHPs, generators) are gaining popularity too. Microgrids are a self-sufficient energy system that serves a discrete geographic footprint, such as a college campus, hospital complex, business center, or neighborhood. Learn more about micro- grids here. Calhoun stresses that selling in these targeted areas requires education, training, and some ‘out of the box’ thinking to develop strategies for growth. To be successful propane marketers need to form partnerships with rental service, temporary heat, pump and power and construction companies. Check out the five online training modules in the Introduction to Strategic Partnerships collection in The Learning Center. “Our opportunity is clear,” Calhoun says. “When energy is needed – no matter where or when – there is no better and cleaner choice than propane-powered power generation.”■ The Total Package PDS-DCL51DP ● Tank mounted to fully welded support base with D-ring lifting lugs ● Integrated with pre-assembled dispenser cabinet ● Cabinet is pre-plumbed with pump, motor, bypass and meter ● One step installation with a single electrical connection ● Any GEC dispenser cabinet can be integrated with the fully welded support base ● Custom configurations available upon request With 1000 gallon tank: 21’OAL x 48’W x 5’H & Weighs 2,700 lbs.
