The Reform Temple of Rockland Youth Groups are back from summer vacation with a program and calendar that is
stronger than ever, with several new events and trips to spice things up! The Youth Groups and Religious School are
teaming up and running events together this year! While the activities are the vehicles for meeting, our mission re-
mains to create friendships among children ranging from grades 3-12.

Rabbinic Thoughts on Elul
The Hebrew month of Elul is the last month of the Jewish year. As such, it is considered a month of spiritual prepara-
tion for the High Holy Days. Every year a group of Reform rabbis collaborate on a series of emails intended to get us
ready for the High Holy Days. These are intended to be brief thoughts about the themes of the High Holy Days, because
just like when we exercise we cannot jump in and grab the heaviest weights, so too when working on the self-
improvement involved with the act of Teshuvah, we should not begin with the heaviness of Yom Kippur. Our souls need
time to warm up to this most sacred moment on the Jewish calendar. This year they have written on the theme of
“improvement.” Please be on the lookout in your email for Rabbi Sharff’s thought on Sept 7.

Prayerbook Fund Tribute Before the High Holy Days

The Reform Temple of Rockland will transition to Mishkan Hanefesh, Machzor for the Days of
Awe starting in the upcoming New Year 5779. We are offering our congregants the opportunity

Machzors. A dedication is a beautiful way to remember, honor, or recognize someone special.
Your Silver & Gold Dedication is a purchase of a set (Rosh Hashanah (GOLD) and Yom Kippur
(SILVER)) of Machzorim. A single dedication will be a bookplate on the inside cover of each
      book.

What is WRJ?
Our Sisterhood is an organization of women who join together in
friendship. We are women of all ages and bonded by many fac-
tors. We support the tenets of Reform Judaism and The Reform
Temple of Rockland in many ways.
Our programs, activities and fundraising efforts benefit our con-
gregation, our children and our community. We meet for social
and spiritual activities. Sisterhood provides the arena for us to ex-
pand and grow in a Jewish atmosphere. As a member of Sisterhood, you will join with other Women of Re-
form Judaism supporting issues affecting women and families around the world.
We are a caring community that strives to put our Jewish ideals into action. As we learn and serve, we share
friendship, fun and prayers and gain a sense of belonging. You determine your own level of participation,
from financial support through dues and donations to participation in events and programs. Try us - you’ll
like us!

Mike to Rockland after they married. Mike explains, “I did
not always understand the value of Temple life. I am most grateful that Eileen kept me coming to RTR for
many years. Eileen came from an observant Jewish family, which I did not. To this day, all that I do at Tem-
ple could not be done without Eileen’s unending love, encouragement, and support.” Eileen also served on
the Chesed Committee for more than a decade.

Eileen and Mike’s daughter Veronica was a joyful Bat Mitzvah student, recruited for Joseph Eisner Camp at
legacy temple TBT. Veronica, her husband Matt and the Rutters’ adorable grandson Xavier, happily attend
many RTR events.

Since retiring from teaching in 2014, Michael sharpened his comedic skills where he wittingly tells us, “I
went to Stand-up Comedy School and learned to tell jokes sitting down.” When Michael is not making some-
one smile he is playing a 12-string guitar and singing in a rock band named “Grandpa” with two other RTR
congregants: Steve Levy and our very own Choir director, Steve Iger. (We are told that even Rabbi Sharff,
jammed with the Grandpa band several months ago. He did, however, complain of a hearing loss for several
weeks.)

Mike’s RTR involvement includes Co-Chairing the Membership Committee and of course staying true to his
passion for music by playing in the RTR Chai Life Band. Michael is quick to add, “It’s amazing to work with
our ridiculously talented Cantor Sally Neff, and the superbly talented musicians in the Band.” It doesn’t end
there. Mike and his warm Cheshire smile can be seen at Men’s Club and the newly formed Car Club. “I love
our new Car Club presided over by the most able, and never asleep at the wheel Chair Barry Fleischman.”

Mike also loves the thought provoking conversations at Taste of Torah, and the Saturday Shabbat Services
that follow, where he is a regular. A reminder to us all, there is something for everyone at RTR.

• WEEKLY (Wednesdays): e-Connections _______________________ Deadline: 3:00 PM Tuesday
Our weekly email, “e-Connections,” goes out to our congregation every Wednesday. This communication is for upcoming events
and important announcements only. It is intended to be a short (2-page max.) newsletter; it is not intended to run repetitive flyers
or announcements (i.e., Soul Mates shoe collection). Text will be limited and graphics will be small. Flyers will be linked. Please
note: stand-alone e-blasts are primarily for life cycle events.
• WEEKLY (Fridays): Erev Shabbat Services Handout _______________________ Deadline: 10:00 AM Friday
Each Friday, we prepare the Yahrzeit and Mi Shebeirach lists for the Erev Shabbat Services handout. If there are any chang-
es/additions to these lists, please notify the RTR Office by 10 AM. Changes/additions made after the deadline will be communicat-
ed to clergy and appropriately read, but the handout will not be changed.
• MONTHLY: Connections ________________________ Deadline: 10th of the Prior Month (Ex: Dec 10th for Jan)
Each month, we produce a bulletin that is mailed to homes and businesses. Entries are due in the Office by the 10th of the month
for inclusion in the following month’s bulletin. This communication is intended for ongoing events, flyers, news, articles, and an-
nouncements.
Submission Guidelines: Please submit your own flyers. Be sure to include a date, time, location, description and contact person.
We accept all formats. All of the above information can be emailed to Susan@RTRny.org.
