Volunteers, ushers and choir members are asked to park at Nyack High School. Thank you for your cooperation. Anyone with questions can contact the Temple Administrator, Jolie Levy, at Jolie@RTRny.org or 845-358-2248. Rabbinic Thoughts on Elul The Hebrew month of Elul is the last month of the Jewish year. As such, it is considered a month of spiritual prepara- tion for the High Holy Days. Every year a group of Reform rabbis collaborate on a series of emails intended to get us ready for the High Holy Days. These are intended to be brief thoughts about the themes of the High Holy Days, because just like when we exercise we cannot jump in and grab the heaviest weights, so too when working on the self- improvement involved with the act of Teshuvah, we should not begin with the heaviness of Yom Kippur. Our souls need time to warm up to this most sacred moment on the Jewish calendar. This year they have written on the theme of “improvement.” Please be on the lookout in your email for Rabbi Sharff’s thought on Sept 7.

Our Sisterhood is an organization of women who join together in friendship. We are women of all ages and bonded by many fac- tors. We support the tenets of Reform Judaism and The Reform Temple of Rockland in many ways. Our programs, activities and fundraising efforts benefit our con- gregation, our children and our community. Page 22 Connections September 2018 Meet Mike & Eileen Rutter Meet Mike Rutter, his wife Eileen, and their family. When asked how he ended up in ROCKland County, Mike’s humor shines through, “I came to Rockland County in dedicated search of large, heavy objects. Seriously, I came for a teach- ing job I landed in the Clarkstown School District in 1972. The job lasted a while…42 years. I also taught college for a decade after I earned, or stole, I can’t remember (old age is a funny thing), a doctoral degree from Fordham University.” Mike is proud that his long teaching career allowed him to teach many of our very own RTR members! Eileen, a talented, practicing psychotherapist, came with Mike to Rockland after they married. Mike explains, “I did not always understand the value of Temple life. I am most grateful that Eileen kept me coming to RTR for many years. Eileen came from an observant Jewish family, which I did not. To this day, all that I do at Tem- ple could not be done without Eileen’s unending love, encouragement, and support.” Eileen also served on the Chesed Committee for more than a decade. Eileen and Mike’s daughter Veronica was a joyful Bat Mitzvah student, recruited for Joseph Eisner Camp at legacy temple TBT. Veronica, her husband Matt and the Rutters’ adorable grandson Xavier, happily attend many RTR events. Since retiring from teaching in 2014, Michael sharpened his comedic skills where he wittingly tells us, “I went to Stand-up Comedy School and learned to tell jokes sitting down.” When Michael is not making some- one smile he is playing a 12-string guitar and singing in a rock band named “Grandpa” with two other RTR congregants: Steve Levy and our very own Choir director, Steve Iger. (We are told that even Rabbi Sharff, jammed with the Grandpa band several months ago. He did, however, complain of a hearing loss for several weeks.) Mike’s RTR involvement includes Co-Chairing the Membership Committee and of course staying true to his passion for music by playing in the RTR Chai Life Band. Michael is quick to add, “It’s amazing to work with our ridiculously talented Cantor Sally Neff, and the superbly talented musicians in the Band.” It doesn’t end there. Mike and his warm Cheshire smile can be seen at Men’s Club and the newly formed Car Club. “I love our new Car Club presided over by the most able, and never asleep at the wheel Chair Barry Fleischman.” Mike also loves the thought provoking conversations at Taste of Torah, and the Saturday Shabbat Services that follow, where he is a regular. A reminder to us all, there is something for everyone at RTR.

Page 26 Connections September 2018 LET’S TALK ART SERIES IX In the reception area outside the Sanctuary are two tapestries. The Chaim Gross “Peace” Tapestry (note “Shalom” in Hebrew), presented to Cantor Weinflash on his 30th anniversary at TBE, was an art fund purchase subsidized by Edward Fields and Company and donated by Phyllis and Morton Simon. The Jerusalem Tapestry between the center and rear Social Halls was created by Shmuel and Malke Schlesinger and was donated in the memory of Herbert Batkin by his friends.
