BECOMING AN ANTIRACIST CONGREGATION WITHIN OUR WALLS AND BEYOND CHANGE Temple Emanu-El continues its work in eliminating racism and promoting PRIVILEGE awareness and education throughout our congregation, our city and our world. We are sharing terms studied in Temple’s Facing Our Truths small ACTION RACISM groups, and framing questions for the topics that are introduced. BIAS FOOD DESERTS The events of 2020 have illuminated longstanding disparities in health care that range from the unconscious bias of medical professionals, access to insurance and preemptive care and a history of distrust among communities of color of the health care system. One of the culprits contributing to this disparity is the existence of food deserts, urban areas in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food deserts are places where the poverty rate is greater than 20% and a third of the population lives more than a mile from a major grocer. Because of high pricing and limited options, residents spend disproportionately on less nutritious basics. Besides limited grocery options, these areas often lack vehicle availability and adequate public transit, making it difficult for residents to reach options elsewhere. How far do you have to drive for groceries? • What are some ways in which eliminating food deserts would help disparities in health care? • What other programs would you encourage in conjunction with the elimination of food deserts? august/september contents 6 Clergy Message 2 Annual Fund 3 Temple Safety 4 Adult Learning Celebration and Remembrance 4 7 Temple Journeys Shabbat Services Olan Lecture Archives Exhibit 5 6 6 With heartfelt thanks to our 1,064 Temple members who participated in the 2020-2021 Annual Fund. PRAYER The months of August and September are the spiritual crescendo of the Jewish year, from the anticipatory weeks of Elul to the energy of Rosh Hashanah to the good-difficult hours of Yom Kippur. Sukkot and Simchat Torah follow, with all the joy and sweetness that accompanies fall’s bounty and a new cycle of Torah. Through it all, Shabbat continues to anchor us each and every week. Our Elul Shabbatot will include a visit from longtime friend and member José Bowen in a musical leadership role and a round-table discussion with our clergy about their own spiritual preparation for this time. Temple is dedicated to being a multi-access community of prayer. We are holding in-person services in Stern Chapel on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. We are also continuing to offer our warm and welcoming online experience. More details can be found on our website at tedallas.org and in the Thursday guide to Shabbat email. DATES Selichot August 28 “Let this then, my small poem, like a new moon, slender and barely open, Rosh Hashanah be the first prayer that opens me to faith.” September 6-7 Shabbat Shuvah, --David Whyte, from Mishkan HaNefesh for Rosh Hashanah Service of Return September 10-11 As August arrives, with seemingly endless weeks ahead before that first crisp autumn breeze, it’s hard to think of a new season ahead. But the days grow imperceptibly shorter and we inch toward change — a new school schedule, stepping out with new hope in this phase of the Kever Avot, pandemic, a quickening of the calendar, welcoming of summer sojourners back home. And as Service of Remembrance it always does, Elul arrives, the ramp-up to the High Holy Days. Followed by Rosh Hashanah September 12 and Yom Kippur, horns blowing and gates clattering “open me, open me.” Sukkot and Simchat Torah round out the seven-week journey into autumn, and into our open hearts.
