SPRING 2021 PAW PRINTS Taquito’s Amazing Recovery Taquito was brought to AWL in September 2019 by a teacher in Warren. Taquito weighed just two pounds and was around eight weeks old. Despite his short life, he had been through a lot already. He lived with at least two different families and was unable to use his right front leg. 2021 Tests showed that AWL EVENTS Taquito had damage to his brachial plexus, 6/1 Kick off of Paws a network of nerves & Claws Mega in the chest and Raffle armpit area that controls the 23rd Annual Golf movement and 8/6 Classic at Avalon- feeling of a cat’s front Squaw Creek legs. EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Meet Evelyn! Evelyn Shealy has been employed with Animal Welfare League since September 2020. She came to AWL with experience as a vet assistant/vet tech since 2008 and worked as an alumni coordinator and adoption & kennel manager at Angels of Assisi in Virginia. Currently, Evelyn is the adoption supervisor here at AWL, but in the past has been an animal caretaker and volunteer coordinator. Evelyn oversees the adoption process and works to connect adopters with their new furry family members. She also helps with animal care and to keep animals comfortable in their new environments. Some of her favorite things about working here at AWL are seeing our longer residents find their perfect match and leave very happy, as well as getting follow-up pictures of animals in their new homes on our Friends of Animal Welfare League Facebook page. Evelyn has adopted 2 rats and 1 kitten from AWL. The kitten was brought in with severe URI, so Evelyn took her home to foster and ended up falling in love. THE ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE OF TRUMBULL COUNTY IS A GREAT INVESTMENT When you make a gift as part of your long-term estate plan, you are making a commitment to support the abandoned, abused, and neglected animals of Trumbull County long into the future. To learn how to create your own meaningful legacy through the AWL, contact Lori Shandor at director@awltrumbull.com or 330-539-5300.
SISSY'S STORY OF RECOVERY Sissy found herself at AWL in December of 2019 when she was surrendered due to her owners not being able to care for her any longer. A 5-year-old, St. Bernard mix, Sissy seemed to be well cared for and was very sweet and gentle with staff right away. Unfortunately, it was quickly determined that she was heartworm positive. Heartworm treatment requires multiple shots into the animal’s lower back, activity restriction, and can be incredibly painful. In a dog the size of Sissy, this could prove to be extra challenging as she would need to be leash walked versus being allowed to roam free in AWL’s outside yards. Sissy had been an outside dog and was not used to being in a kennel, indoors the majority of the time. It was all very new for her. Fortunately, Sissy’s future family found her quickly and were willing to foster her while she recovered from spay surgery and underwent heartworm treatment. In February 2020, Sissy left AWL and went to live with her foster family. Since Sissy had been an outside dog, she was not yet housebroken. Sissy’s foster Dale and his family went to work on teaching Sissy to be an indoor dog. “When we got Sissy, the pandemic started to be a thing right after. Even that did not stop anyone from AWL getting her treated and her health back”. Sissy came to AWL for each of her shots for her heartworm treatment. The first was the worst for her. Thankfully, she bounced back and the second shot was not nearly as hard on her. Sissy came in six months after her last shot and tested heartworm negative! Finally, in September 2020 Sissy’s adoption to her new family was finalized and her future was very bright. Since then, Sissy has come a long way. AWL staff described Sissy as a “big teddy bear” and a “gentle giant with slobbery kisses”. Dale told us, “I was skeptical about getting Sissy at first because we already had two dogs and a cat that are rescues but I quickly realized that we had made a great decision. It only took Sissy about a month to win the hearts of our 2 chihuahuas, and you know how stubborn chihuahuas can be.” Some of Sissy’s favorite things to do are go on walks, be outside with her family, go on car rides, and of course, lots of treats! ”Sissy is so precious and so very happy here. And that for sure makes us happy about the decision we made that day we saw her in her kennel”. Thank you for providing a loving forever home for Sissy. We wish you and her the absolute best for your future together.
NEW AGENTS REPRESENT AWL The AWL Humane Department has undergone a lot of changes in the last couple of years. The department is more active than ever, having investigated over 500 cases of cruelty and neglect in 2020. Pictured is Diane King (left), Director of Outreach and Program at AWL, who oversees the Humane Department and is sworn in as a humane agent herself. King has 20+ years of animal-related experience and has been with AWL since May 2019. Michelle Faulkner (center) has been a humane agent with AWL since August 2019. Faulkner came to AWL with eight years of animal- related experience and a year as a humane agent in another state. Lindsey Carson (right) joined the AWL Humane Department in February 2021 as an agent- in-training. Carson comes to AWL with over seven years of experience in animal control and humane law. Also featured is Tonka. Read more about Tonka in the longest canine resident section of this newsletter.
ADOPTABLE DOGS! FAWN This canine beauty is Fawn. She has a loving and energetic spirit, even though she has not had the easiest start to life. Fawn was transferred to the Animal Welfare League from the Trumbull County Dog Pound in October 2020 after she was assumed to be hit by a car. She had an injury to her front leg that prevented her from putting her full weight on it. Amputation of the leg was a possibility, but before a surgical plan could be put in place, Fawn began to put more and more weight on it. Looking at her now, you would never know that Fawn had any injuries when she first arrived. For more information on Fawn and other pets available for adoption, visit the AWL website at awlrescueme.com. DEISEL D ! Meet Diesel! This handsome hound is easy to fall in love with. Diesel is a E sweet, outgoing, and happy 6-year old pup ready for any adventure. He T has been stealing the hearts of staff and volunteers since he was P O surrendered to the Animal Welfare League in November 2020. Diesel is AD your typical hound with a bellowing bark, so apartment living would not be ideal for this guy. He loves to go on walks and run around outside. Diesel would love a couch to cuddle on, but he is looking for an active family because he is not a couch potato. If you can give this amazing fella the love he is looking for, submit an adoption application on the AWL website at awlrescueme.com. CHARLIE Charlie has been in and out of the shelter since June 2020 through no fault of her own. She was originally brought to the Humane department's shelter after her owner could no longer care for her properly. Charlie has been adopted and returned three different times! She deserves to find her perfect match, and we know her family is out there. Charlie is a young girl around 2- years of age and has lots of love to give. She enjoys playing outside and going for longs walks. Charlie also loves to spend time in our lounge room watching her favorite movies. Due to her rambunctious personality, Charlie would do best with older kids. She does prefer the spotlight and needs to be the only pet in the home. To help find Charlie her permanent forever, contact the Animal Welfare League at (330)539-5300 for more information.
ADOPTABLE DOGS! SARA Sara is the happiest dog! She is an active 3-year old pit mix transferred to the Animal Welfare League in October 2020 from the Trumbull County Dog Pound. Sara tested positive for Heartworm when she first arrived at the shelter, but she has completed her treatment like a champ and is ready for a new adventure. This sweet girl still has a puppy personality and would benefit from additional training to help her learn obedience and better manners. Sara is very eager to please and takes to commands quickly. She prefers to be the center of attention so Sara would do best as an only pet. To find out more about adoption, contact the adoptions team at (330)539- 5300 Tuesdays-Saturdays. TONKA Meet Tonka! Tonka is a senior pup with almost 10-years of experience in being a good boy. He was transferred to the Animal Welfare League in October 2020 from the Trumbull County Dog Pound. Tonka was initially adopted from the AWL as a puppy, and we believe he has gotten used to being the center of attention as the only pet. He loves to go for walks and has wonderful leash manners. Tonka also enjoys bath time and snuggles on the couch. To find out how you can make this awesome pup a part of your family, e-mail the adoptions team at adoptions@awltrumbull.com. Volunteer for our Cat & Kitten Foster Program! Kitten Season is here, and AWL is looking for people willing to open their homes to care for nursing mothers, as well as orphaned baby kittens. Fosters are essential in keeping these animals healthy and thriving by taking them out of the shelter and into their homes temporarily. Fostering can last 2 – 8 weeks. Kittens need to be 2lbs and healthy to be spayed or neutered. AWL is responsible for all veterinary care. AWL will provide basic care needs. To become a foster, call Evelyn, Adoption Supervisor, at 330-539-5300 or email adoptions@awltrumbull.com.
ADOPTABLE CATS! ANNIE D ! PTE Meet Annie! This beautiful gal was found walking the streets before arriving at the Animal Welfare League in May 2020 with her sister Lucille. Annie is a O quiet and low-key cat who enjoys taking naps, playing with her toys, and AD treats! She can be shy around new people and would do best in a calm environment where she can relax and open up more. Annie is only about 4- years old, so she may be quite active and playful once she is comfortable with her new people. She does well with other cats, but Annie also does just fine on her own. Call the shelter at (330)539-5300 for more information on adoption. LUCILLE Lucille is looking for her forever home at the Animal Welfare League. She was brought into the shelter after being found as a stray in May 2020. Lucille enjoys the company of other cats and can be loving towards people once she gets to know them. Treats and toys are the best ways to Lucille’s heart. Her dream home would include a quiet environment with a nice perch to bird watch or windowsill to bask in the sunlight. Lucille is only about 4-years of age, so it is possible that she will become more active and playful once she is comfortable in her surroundings. For more information on adoption, visit our website at awlrescueme.com. ONE STRIPE One Stripe is on the prowl to find his forever home. He is a senior gentleman at about 9-years of age and knows what he wants. One Stripe is not a fan of being picked up or cuddled too much, but he loves ear scratches and warms beds. He can be shy towards people, but One Stripe does well with other cats of similar disposition. One Stripe has residing in one of the Senior Showcases since being surrendered to the Animal Welfare League in June 2020. If you have a quiet place for One Stripe to call home, e-mail our adoptions team at adoptions@awltrumbull.com for more information.
ADOPTABLE CATS! ROLLINS Rollins is the queen of her colony and loves being told how beautiful she is. You can usually find her perched on her throne in the senior showcase overlooking her peers. Rollins got used to being pampered daily in her previous home but had to be surrendered to the Animal Welfare League in June 2020. She does not want anyone to think she is too spoiled, so Rollins prefers to go places herself instead of being carried. Due to her independent streak, Rollins would do best in a home without small children. If interested in adoption, visit the website at awlrescueme.com to submit an adoption application. LITTLE TYKE Little Tyke is a petite senior kitty that does not want to make a fuss. She is looking for a laid-back home to call her own where she can receive ear scratches and treats. Little Tyke has been a resident in the senior showcase since being surrendered to the Animal Welfare League in June 2020. She came from a multi-cat family and does well with other cats of similar personalities. Little Tyke knows her manners and will make a great addition to a mature household. Contact the Animal Welfare League to learn how to set up an adoption appointment at (330)539-5300.
TRIBUTES TO A LOVED ONE, A FRIEND Tributes to a loved one or a friend say something special about them. The Animal Welfare League is always deeply honored to be named by someone as their charity of choice. And, when tribute gifts are given, the families also receive that feeling that that person mattered. A legacy of caring is one that we all take pride in and can feel good about. Tribute gifts are so important to providing the operations and services of the AWL. So, to those special people, we take a moment to remember them and to say thank you for caring. May the wonderful tributes and memories of those special people live on in our hearts and in the lives of the many pets that they have helped. In memory of...
