Resident Thank you to Shelley Benn of Edward Jones for sponsoring our Resident Feature this month Feature The Fyfe-Patterson Family Embracing Greenspace; Embracing Winter By Heather Seftel-Kirk • Photos By Irina Fortey Jenna Fyfe and her husband, David Patterson, grew up in Toronto but are making their home in Ottawa, one of the coldest winter capitals in the world, surrounded by greenspace and the chance to make winter fun. Jenna says she and David met while at Queens University and then, somewhat by chance, ended up in Ottawa. She spent several years as a journalist working with CTV and as the national parliamentary producer for Canada AM, and he found his passion in high tech at Solace. Today Jenna works in event planning and organizing fundraising events. “I had a bucket list of things I wanted to achieve as a journalist. I covered four federal election campaigns, spent time in Afghanistan while our troops were there, had the opportunity to travel around the country visiting military bases, enjoyed meeting Canadian and international celebrities, and produced two live three-hour specials from Iqaluit. It was exciting and I loved every moment, but I am happy with my decision to change courses.” David and Jenna love the outdoors and are raising their children, 11-year- old Cate and 7-year-old Tommy, to enjoy and take advantage of the opportunities as well. Despite the adjustment to the cold and extreme snow with the City of Ottawa to protect and ensure the continuity of this space that can come with an Ottawa winter, especially compared with hometown as an off-golf-season recreational opportunity that is open and available for Toronto, this family has found that Fall, Winter and Spring are when their everyone. outdoor time expands beyond their own backyard – to the greenspace that “All you have to do is go to the space in those off-seasons and you can see is the Kanata Golf and Country Club. how important, how valuable, this land is to the community. In the winter Part of Jenna’s life has become her volunteer efforts with the Kanata people use it for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and even skating on Greenspace Protection Coalition, an organization that is working closely the pond. build forts and snowmen. For some residents this space is literally just outside their own yards, for others, just a short trip away. This greenspace is a real hub for the community, a chance to connect at a distance, to be outdoors, and to be active.” As COVID has continued, that opportunity to get outdoors safely and within their own community means residents have not had to travel, could chat with neighbours at a safe distance, and could walk with family, socially distanced, and in a beautiful environment. “I can’t say enough about what this land means to the residents, and to the City. The value in protecting this area is immeasurable.” While she knows that many people find winter unappealing, the cold a little hard to take, she says the transition to becoming an outdoor winter person isn’t that tough. “You have to prepare for the weather of course, dress for the conditions, but then it is really about finding an activity that you and your family enjoy and just doing it.” She notes that hiking requires nothing beyond warm clothing, perhaps Yaktrax for icy conditions, and that places like Play It Again Sports offer used skiing, skating and snowshoeing equipment at reasonable prices so you can try things without breaking the bank or committing to a huge equipment purchase. As a fundraising/events consultant, Jenna has been focused on helping the Coalition raise the funds it needs to support its ongoing work, including planning virtual dinner parties. “Our goal is to do these once a month. We arrange a menu with a local restaurant, have volunteers deliver the meals, and then stream entertainment that people can enjoy while they dine. Not only does it provide funds the Coalition needs, but it brings the community together for a shared, but socially distanced event.” When they are not out playing in their own yard or enjoying the greenspace, Cate and Tommy attend Stephen Leacock Public School. Jenna said it was a difficult choice – that of whether to return to in-person school. In the end though she says the kids are happier and the school has done an amazing job at communicating with families, and with keeping the school environment safe. Please reach out to me by telephone or email for conversation. I look forward to speaking with you. #1 IN INVESTOR SATISFACTION Ranked “Highest in Investor Satisfaction with Full Service Brokerage Firms,” 7 Years in a row. Tommy has also had the opportunity to return to Scouting and his Beaver Program, with outdoor events and meetings, and hockey has resumed, in a modified format of course, but still with the opportunity to get on skates and to be with teammates. Cate too has had the opportunity to resume her passion – horseback riding at Wesley Clover. “Being alone on a horse, you’re pretty much organically social distanced and she loves it.” Something else this family has been active doing the past few months is raising and training their new puppy. “I know a lot of people have adopted what are being called COVID pets on impulse, but we had been talking about it for a long time, felt the kids were at the right age, and with David and I both now working at home, it seemed a perfect time.” She says it absolutely has been a lot of work – especially those first few months – but adds that the kids have been great at helping out. It also gives the family another reason they need to get outdoors a few times a day. Since David and Jenna came to Ottawa, their families have joined them, with David’s parents relocating from Calgary and his sister and family taking up residence here as well. “It’s kind of funny that they all ended up here, but it has been wonderful because it means we have had opportunities for backyard visits and walks together here or at the Arboretum.” Jenna’s father also relocated to Ottawa and is a resident at Red Oak Retirement Residence. “In the early days of COVID, and recently, we haven’t been able to see him but during the summer, when things were quieter, we were able to visit and have him over to sit outside. Now we facetime, which isn’t the same, but we are glad to have him close.” While COVID has been challenging, this family is succeeding at finding ways to come together, reasons to get outdoors, and plenty of opportunity to enjoy an amazing treasure, right in the heart of the community. PHYSIOTHERAPY & MASSAGE Mathew Pulickal Expert Contributor Ottawa Physiotherapy & Sport Clinics Prepping For The Winter With Core Exercises By Mathew Pulickal A common misconception about core strengthening exercises is that we are talking about developing six-pack abs; in reality, core strengthening is meant for the functionality of the body as a whole. A strong core helps with preventing injury, improving performance and the ability to endure day-to-day activities. Everyone can benefit from a stronger core – not just athletes. Core strengthening doesn’t just involve the development of the abdominal muscles, you are also building strength in countless surrounding muscle groups, specifically four deep muscle groups: the diaphragm, pelvic floor, transverse abdominis and multifidis. By strengthening these muscle groups and training your body to activate them when appropriate, you are proactively protecting your body from injury and increasing its ability to engage in motions that may otherwise be impossible to sustain. Protecting your back is a priority throughout the entire year, but especially during the winter months. The presence of ice or wet snow increases the likelihood of movement-related injury. Sudden muscle spasms that our bodies enact when we feel ourselves falling can damage spinal muscle fibres, or even create a misalignment of vertebral joints. A strong core will not guarantee that you won’t hurt yourself in these conditions, but it does help! There are several simple exercises that you can do to develop the strength and coordination of your deep core muscles. Remember, the goal of these is to slowly build up strength – you should stop immediately if you feel any pain or discomfort. Plank The plank involves supporting your body in a straight line on your elbows and toes. Your form is the most important thing here – keep a straight line between the two points of contact with the ground. You can make the exercise a bit easier by resting on your knees. Try keeping the plank active for 30 seconds and then take a break. Do three repetitions. Dead Bug Lie on your back with your arms and legs extended towards the ceiling. Bend your knees at a 90-degree angle and then lower your right arm and left leg (while straightening it out) simultaneously until they hover above the ground. Briefly hold that position and then bring your arm and leg back into the starting position. Repeat the process with your left arm and right leg. Complete ten repetitions to complete one set. Take a break and then do two more sets. Squats This exercise can be done with a light weight (dumbbell or cowbell). Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, and then squat down while keeping your knees and feet in line. Make sure that you keep your back straight (don’t bend over) and keep your core muscles engaged both on the way down and on the way up. Repeat this motion ten times to complete a set. Take a break and then repeat two more sets. For all of these exercises, make sure that you “activate” your core muscles. You can do this by bringing your belly button inward and then breathing normally. This will “activate” the muscles in the right manner. Having a strong core will allow you to do more with your body while minimizing the risk of a lower back injury. If you do feel discomfort or injure yourself, seek out the help of a professional physiotherapist to get your body back on the right track! BESTVERSIONMEDIA.COM JANUARY 2021 7

Be realistic: If your routine now doesn’t even include a regular walk around the block, starting with running a mile a day likely isn’t realistic. Start small and make sure it has a takeaway beyond vague health or weight loss. Think about something like a daily walk perhaps to break up your routine, or an evening walk to connect with the family over their day. When you add in something that is really important to you, you may find the habit easier to start – and stick to – for the extra benefit you gain. Oh, and if you absolutely cannot stand the winter cold, don’t make an outdoor walk your first resolution. Think of something you can do indoors – like walking up or down the stairs to speak with someone on another floor instead of calling to them for instance. Accept that you may slip: If you do miss a day of walks, or find yourself calling upstairs to the kids one day because you are really tired, don’t assume the resolution is a bust and give up. I hear people all the time talk about eating healthier but then have a birthday to celebrate or a day that they just can’t beat the chocolate craving and use that as an excuse to stop altogether. Part of why changing habits is hard is because we are changing routine, perhaps giving up something we really love. Instead of considering that slip a failure, consider it a treat for all the work you have been doing and press on. Know that habits take a long time to establish: Just as it likely took you a long time – perhaps a lifetime – to slip into the habits you now carry, know that it will take time and practice to establish something new. Use your phone or tablet, or even calendar, to remind yourself daily of whatever habit you are trying to set. Engage someone you trust to be a check-in. Have them ask you – not every day but once every few weeks, how you are doing with your plan. That check-in will be a great reminder and a great motivator knowing you’ll need to answer the ‘how are you doing with’ question. The New Year truly is a chance for a new start. Be realistic about what you want and how you want to get there, ask for help and be forgiving when you slip and your future vision could become reality. BESTVERSIONMEDIA.COM JANUARY 2021 9
Kid’s Corner By Heather Seftel-Kirk During 2020 there were a lot of things that happened differently than they did in the past and people had to be creative about how they marked holidays and events, how they connected with friends. While some felt things like Halloween were ruined without traditional trick or treating, others took the opportunity to make it unique and memorable, something the family would never forget. With that spirit in mind, and knowing COVID is not going away soon, I propose a memory box for 2020/2021. What You Need: A box of any kind • Left over wrapping paper, ribbons • Markers, crayon Beads, stickers, glue… anything to decorate the box What Goes Inside: • Notes • Pictures • Receipts • Crafts From every event throughout the year – and you can start with the holiday past, sit down with the kids and come up with something to add to the box that illustrated or explained how this year’s event was different. Hopefully by the end of the year you’ll find the box filled with a whole lot of special and memorable reminders of the year past and realize that, while some things may have been missed or lost, other things found new meaning and perhaps new traditions were born. The key to avoiding this is to get Call 613 . 366 . 2899 clear—really clear—about who you are and what matters most to you, and then making decisions with confidence, knowing that you’re living true to yourselves regardless of what others are doing. That is the purpose of my book, The Three Big Questions for a Frantic Family. I discovered the model for the book years ago. By day I was, and still am, a consultant to CEOs. By night I’m a husband and father. One evening I came home, and innocuously said to Laura, my wife: “If my clients ran their companies the way we run this family, they’d go out of business.” JAMIESONDANCE.COM Feeling like I was criticizing her, Laura objected, and I reminded her that it was as much my fault as hers. In fact, I was more at fault because I spent my days helping others create clarity and strategy, and I did virtually nothing in that area at home. So I adapted the work I did for corporations for families and came up with The Three Big Questions. What this entails is actually simple. In just an hour over dinner, parents can have a discussion that provides a basic but critical level of family clarity. By asking and discussing a few key questions, they can identify the values that guide the behaviour of the family, the basic principles that create the strategy for the family, and the single greatest priority for the family over the next few months. By carving out just 15 minutes each week, they can review those things and make whatever decisions and adjustments are necessary to keep things smooth and on track. The book provides real-life examples from different kinds of families, from those with young kids to empty-nesters. My favourite toys are a rope that I can pull and chew on and a Kong bone that sometimes has treats inside of it. Speaking of treats, I love hot dogs and beef liver treats. They’re my favourite foods. I get to have them when I’m learning new things and being really good. I’ve been going to puppy classes at PetSmart. We do lots of fun things there and get lots of treats. I can sit, lie down, shake a paw and stay. I like to come when called, because that’s when they give me the best treats. I really like being with people. I follow my family around, so I can keep a close eye on them. I don’t like it when they’re in a part of the house I’m not allowed to go to. Sometimes I get in trouble, like if I jump up on furniture or chew on things that aren’t my toys. I don’t like to get in trouble, so I try to be good. My best friend Lucy lives two houses away from me. When we walk by each other’s houses, we always look for each other. Sometimes Lucy gets away from her family and runs over to my window to call for me. I love it when she’s allowed to play in our yard. Gotta go! The kids will be home from school soon and I can’t wait to play with them. I love belly rubs! Bye.
