JANUARY/ FEBRUARY 2021 M AGA ZINE A Publication for the members of Hunters Run Country Club Ce l e br a t i n g ACHIEVEMENTS: PAST AND PRESENT H appy New Ye a r!
E d i t o r ’s N o t e We all have achievements we can be proud of—big or small, they can be remembered for years, or simply provide momentary satisfaction. In this issue we have examples of both types. Our main feature presents women members of Hunters Run who broke the “glass ceiling” in different ways. These were important accomplishments at the time. Today, we applaud those members who gathered 400 recipes into a cookbook, with proceeds to benefit a local charity. We recognize how one club continued to put on virtual meetings on meaningful topics all year during the pandemic. We appreciate photos of beautiful scenes throughout the club. And, we can’t ignore those who work OFFICERS AND BOARD on puzzles with thousands of pieces…and can still find that last piece. That is quite an MEMBERS 2020-2021 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE achievement! I N T E L L E C T UA L C H A L L E NG E S Our Members Solve the Puzzle By Susan Braitman Many of us have taken up jigsaw puzzles as a new hobby since the pandemic hit. Or, maybe it’s a hobby from our childhood that we haven’t had time for in years. Not only is it relaxing, but it gives your brain a good workout. When doing a puzzle, you use both the right side of the brain (for creative and intuitive thinking) and left side (for logical and linear thinking.) Jigsaw puzzles are said to be a great stress reliever and help to improve short term memory. It is also said to help prevent Alzheimer’s and promote longevity. Members all agreed that working on jigsaw puzzles is both challenging yet relaxing. Many of us do not have the space to spread out and do a large puzzle. In that case, you can consider getting a puzzle board or table. This will allow you to pack up your puzzle intact so that you can use your dining room table. Puzzle sorting trays are also available. You may also want to preserve your puzzle when completed with special glue and frames. For supplies, check out www.bitsandpieces.com. Barry and Sue Levy started doing crossword puzzles when their son and daughter-in-law sent them a few after the pandemic started. They began with 1000 -piece puzzles. Now they are up to 2000 pieces; and, they put another leaf in their dining room table. Doris Hirschhorn explains “One plus of the pandemic was the chance to revisit something I liked to do as a kid--putting together jigsaw puzzles. And, once I started one, my husband Bob joined in. Since March we have done at least six or seven 1000-pieces puzzles, many from friends in Hunters Run who we found out also loved to do jigsaw puzzles. We’ve shared puzzles WOHL FAMILY 80th Birthday Party Celebration for Marty, July 2018 with other Hunters Run friends.… we set up each puzzle 1,000 pieces by the Wohl family on a table on our enclosed terrace. If we need to use the table before the puzzle is done, no problem. We use a Jigsaw Puzzle Roll Up Mat we bought at Barnes & Noble. It’s amazing. You roll up the puzzle, secure it with Velcro bands. When you unroll, the pieces are exactly the way we left them.” Members have been sharing puzzles among themselves. You can find many different subjects for puzzles - including abstract art, famous works of art, landscapes, sports, and many more. You can find puzzles online as well at retail outlets, such as Barnes & Noble, Hallmark stores, and Costco. Hopefully when the pandemic is over, we will be able to set up a puzzle exchange for members. WINE BOTTLES 1000 pieces by Barry Levy 6 JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021 Hunters Run Country Club

In these stressful times due to the pandemic, we are now enjoying ‘the joys of chess.’ ” The other players feel the same way: “I told Stu I was also interested and it turned out there were others like us interested in an intellectual competition to go with our athletic pursuits,” says Louis Lippman. “I personally find the analytical attack and defend nature of chess very stimulating without wearing out my body,” he adds. “I’m an original member of the group. More Hidden Gems By Susan Braitman As I walk in front of the condos in Stratford and Westgate, I peek onto the front patios looking for some delightful treasures. My favorite is this duck which has taken up residence in a corner of a front patio. It is sitting on a nest of 19 eggs. According to the residents of this condo, this is the second year that this duck has arrived. The nest is covered in duck feathers that the duck pulled off her own stomach in order to camouflage the nest. That way, she can leave the nest to look for food. FEATUR E They changed their world in some small way by shattering the glass ceiling—crack by crack. *The glass ceiling: a metaphor for the invisible barrier to the growth, advancement and actualization of women. BREAKING THE GLASS CEILING*: Hunters Run Women Paving The Way By Judie Spinner “Giving women opportunities to shine,” said JOAN LONDON, “was important to me in all my management positions in education, especially as Acting and Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey.” Early on, Joan saw the need to recognize, identify, encourage and support women to go up the ranks in a mostly male-dominated management environment. Mentoring women was her focus and resulted in a number of her proteges’ success in achieving high-ranking leadership positions. Today, Joan is a key member of a group of retired women educators who are still finding ways of helping women—including providing scholarships for those returning to work. “Giving women opportunities to shine ... was important to me...” It took over 100 years for the Stamford Yacht Club to ask a woman to serve on their Board. That woman was DIANE MARTIN-TRYHANE. Diane was instrumental in changing time-and tradition-honored policies including when women could play tennis at the club. The thinking was that as only men worked, they alone should be allowed to play on weekend mornings. She started the first summer swimming and tennis program for children ages four to seven so that the younger ones would develop these interests at an early age and also be introduced to the world of sailing. Diane’s non-traditional career started at one of the then “Big Eight” accounting firms. She opened and grew a successful public accounting practice, expanded, took on partners and eventually sold it in 2013. She loved the business and thrived in what at the time was considered a man’s world. “It took over 100 years for the Stamford Yacht Club to ask a woman to serve on their Board.” Hunters Run Country Club JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021 11
FEATUR E At Syracuse University, TERRI DOPPELT was the first and only woman to play on the men’s golf team. When she applied to play in a men’s charity tournament at Wee Burn Country Club in Connecticut, it created somewhat of a to-do. Terri was finally the first woman permitted to play. She also had the distinction of being invited to and playing in a men’s member- guest tournament at the ultra- challenging Bethpage Black Golf Course on Long Island, New York. “My baby is in my belly, not my brain. Give me something meaningful to do.” EVE LANGER worked in marketing research when she was pregnant with her first child. As her pregnancy progressed, her work load became increasingly lighter until she finally found herself sitting at her desk with little or no work to do. Her boss was smoking a cigar, his legs propped up on his desk when Eve entered his office and pushed her belly directly forward. “My baby is in my “...Terri was the first and belly, not my brain. Give me something only woman to play on meaningful to do.” Eve’s courage and the men’s golf team.” determination paid off. Things did change. 12 JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021 Hunters Run Country Club
BARBARA LA CHANT had a stellar “...Barbara was the first track record in her 17-year career with woman to achieve the title a New York sales promotion company. Although a top producer, as a woman in of Senior Vice President...” the marketing department, her career rise was extraordinarily slow. She was involved with major campaigns for such companies as Canon, B.J.’s, and Marriott, but still had to battle her way up the corporate ladder. She had to strategize to earn competitive compensation in a predominately male environment. Barbara was the first woman to achieve the title of Senior Vice President and upon her retirement, the women who followed her adamantly acknowledged, “You paved the way for us!” “...when she came from basketball practice ... to her Education Admissions interview wearing pants, the interviewer was completely shocked...” In the sixties and seventies, pants were not considered appropriate for women in the workplace or in public. So, when LORRIE FREEDMAN came from basketball practice at City College (CCNY) to her Education Admissions interview wearing pants, the interviewer was completely shocked. Although firmly reprimanded, Lorrie was admitted to the program. As a swimmer, she had already rebelled against wearing a skimpy, humiliatingly inappropriate swimming suit, so had turned to playing basketball. She finally had to turn down an invitation to be a guard on the women’s basketball team because, once again, the uniform was unwearable. Hunters Run Country Club JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021 13
“Beverly succeeded in getting approval “A physical education teacher... was set on changing for female students to wear pants...” the look to modernize the perception of women as sports figures.” The antiquated green mid- thigh-length dress with bloomers was New Trier High’s women’s accepted gym uniform in Winnetka, Illinois, in the sixties and seventies. A physical education teacher, JUDY POPE was set on changing the look to modernize the perception of women as sports figures. “It hadn’t changed since the forties,” said Judy. The new t-shirts and shorts she succeeded in getting for the women not only did that, it As a teenager in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, in the 1970s, inspired students to participate. Her students as BEVERLY MAGDULE succeeded in getting approval for well as generations to follow were eternally grateful. female students to wear pants to commemorate Earth Day. This was a meaningful sartorial victory when dresses and skirts were the only accepted attire. JOAN GERSON GEDANSKY’s dad suggested she go to law school so that she would have a professional career to sustain her financially...just in case any future plans for married life did not work out. She applied and was accepted at Villanova University Law School when only two women had been enrolled in the prior entering class. Joan started her job search as she neared graduation. She found out at a job fair, as she peddled her resume at the booth of the Southeast Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, (SEPTA), that they had just hired 12 attorneys and had filled all their openings. Both fortunate and timely, as she walked away from the booth, Joan heard, “I would have liked to be the one who hired our first female attorney.” She rose to the challenge and made it happen. She spent the next 38 years defending SEPTA from personal injury lawsuits and establishing state-wide legal precedents. When Joan retired she was the Deputy General Counsel. FEATUR E JANET THALER’s mission was to change the Public School Board in East Meadow, NY, and its priorities. Her focus was on improving the education system. Janet was a positive force that eventually and effectively changed the political makeup of the Board. At a Board debate where she was the mediator, she remembers a speaker’s praise very clearly. “Janet, you were a really good mediator—for a woman!” “Janet, you were a really good mediator—for a woman!” JUDIE SPINNER “I was honored to be in the first graduating class that allowed women to pursue a liberal arts degree and graduate with a BA (Bachelor of Arts degree) at CCNY, a bastion of higher education. Surprisingly and unfortunately, women had not been allowed that option previously. “Upon graduation, I answered a “Help Wanted— Male” ad in The New York Times, and was selected by The Ford Foundation from a highly competitive pool precisely because I took the initiative and had the daring to reply to “help wanted—male.” Hunters Run Country Club JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021 15

WTD-18 By Bethanie Gorny On November 3, the WTD played 18-hole golf for the first time since the pandemic started. With only two courses open and golfers required to play one person to a cart, there was no room for 18 hole tournaments. When all three golf courses opened again, it was possible. To celebrate the return to 18 holes, the WTD board gave out monogrammed WTD-18 facemasks. They MONDAY were a big hit. Swing for P.I.N.K. by Diane Soroka Breast Cancer Doesn’t Stop for Covid-19. Neither Can We! Now more than ever, Play for P.I.N.K. remains committed to raising money for breast cancer research. This year has been a challenging time for everyone. While our events this year may look a little different, we believe we can still run safe and enjoyable golf, tennis and pickleball fundraisers. The Hunters Run Turkey Trot Golf event was held on November 22. Included in this year’s tournament was a Swing for P. I. N. K . fundraiser. Thank you to our club members who generously donated $10 per swing to try and get a golf ball into a small inflatable pool floating on a golf course lake. Lots of splashes, lots of laughs, a few balls in the pools, but more importantly lots of money was raised... $3,340. Wow! We are so grateful for your continued dedication and generosity. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers, the tournament committee and the Golf Staff. We couldn’t have done it without you. See you on March 7, 2021 at the Play for P.I.N.K. Golf Tournament. BR IDGE B R I D G E C O M M I T T E E By Marilyn Ross HR continues to offer Bridge Base Online (BBO) events using the name Best Clubs of Palm Beach every Tuesday evening at 7 PM and Thursday, and Saturday at 12:30 PM. You play 21 boards. The Virtual Number assigned is 202671. There is a fee of $5.00 per player in each game. If you need help, email Hank Fuld at hrbridgecomm@aol.com. ADDITIONAL BRIDGE ACTIVITY TO TRY - BBO INSTANT TOURNAMENT GAMES Many of our bridge players continue to enjoy playing online bridge. I have now expanded my resources and besides playing my regular games on BBO with my bridge friends, I have discovered Instant Tournaments where I can play a tournament anytime and earn masterpoints without waiting for partners or opponents! How? I play against ROBOTS. I choose to play in these ACBL Instant Tournament games with Masterpoints (MP) scoring (vs IMPS). When you start an Instant Tournament, you will be dealt deals from a past tournament you have not played before and have your scores compared against 14 players in those tourneys. If you do well, you receive BBO Points, as well as ACBL masterpoints. The cost is $1.25 BB$ to play. To play, log into BBO, look at the Featured Areas and click the Instant Tournaments link. Then check the Instant Tournament ACBL MP (1.25 BB$) option. Click when you are ready. The link takes you to the registration box. Each tournament is 12 boards, and you must complete all 12 boards to be included on the leaderboards. Leaving or withdrawing from the tournament in the middle of the game will count against your Tournament Completion Rate (TCR). There is no time limit for the tournament. However, if you are idle for a long time, you will be disconnected from BBO and the game is forfeited. This game is Best Hand - your hand will always contain at least the same HCP as the next highest HCP hand. It is also Human Declare - when North wins the contract, South (you) will declare instead. About the Robots According to BBO, the robots used on BBO are called GIB (Ginsberg’s Intelligent Bridgeplayer). GIB is widely considered to be one of the best computer bridge programs ever created. It is occasionally capable of brilliance. It is also occasionally capable of some really poor bids and plays (just like all human players.) I find this to be very true. Some players may find it frustrating if a particular robot partner plays especially poorly (or if a particular robot opponent plays especially well,) on a given hand, but, these things will even themselves over time. I have found that, as BBO states, “Sometimes the robot does something totally Marilyn playing the robot crazy.” The more I play, the more proficient I become with the robots. The GIBs used on BBO play a relatively simple and natural 2/1 bidding system. You can find out the meaning of any bid by clicking on that bid as it appears in the bidding diagram. Furthermore, when it is your turn to bid, moving your mouse over the buttons for the various possible bids will cause an explanation of the bid you are considering (as your GIB partner will understand it,) to be displayed. These explanations can be somewhat cryptic but reading them carefully before you bid will help you to avoid misunderstandings with your GIB partner. The link to the robot convention card is found Under the Robot World link in Featured Areas. Give it a try!! 22 JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021 Hunters Run Country Club

Special Interest Clubs MEMORABLE MEETINGS…VIRTUALLY ALL YEAR By Doris Hirschhorn The pandemic has created a huge challenge to the Special Interest Clubs Program but it didn’t deter the Yiddish and Jewish Culture Club. With hard work and detailed planning, this club has managed to transition from monthly in person meetings to virtual programs with great success. Almost a year ago, on March 12, 2020, this club held its last live event – a Purim Celebration. Approximately 90 people enjoyed “Megillah On the Roof” - a Purim Shpiel based on Fiddler on the Roof. With Creon Smith’s support and Graham Cordrey’s technical assistance, The Palms was turned into a “theater.” The play was directed by Charlie Gruber and produced by Barbara Breslow. The cast included Len Pravda (Mordechai), Renee Pravda (Esther), Charlie Gruber (The King), Harriet Harris, (Vashti), Harry Rapaport (Haman), and Arline Isaacs (Zeresh) with musical direction by Roy Grover and Carol Lever. The audience twirled groggers each time Haman appeared, and when Harriet Harris as Vashti the show was over, each person received individually wrapped hamentashen to enjoy at home. Len Pravda as Mordecai A week later, when Covid-19 caused the Hunters Run Clubhouse to close, the Yiddish Club Planning Committee quickly began Standing: Arline Isaacs, Harriet Harris, Harry Rapaport, Barbara Breslow, Charlie Gruber, brainstorming ideas for future meetings. The result was three Malya Scher. Sitting: Carol Lever, Roy Grover well-received events. On April 4, 2020, the Planning Committee arranged for each Hunters Run community to recognize Israel Independence Day between 5:00 PM and 5:15 PM. During those 15 minutes, volunteers slowly drove around their own communities waving Israeli flags. Others stood outside their homes, waving back and making lots of noise with pots and pans. 24 JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021 Hunters Run Country Club
On September 16, 2020, the Yiddish Club invited all Hunters Run members to welcome in the New Year on Zoom. The program included several short video clips about Americanized Yiddish words, favorite Jewish foods, a Rabbi’s view of Rosh Hashanah, the Andrew Sisters singing Bei Mir Bist Du Sheyn, and ending with Barbra Streisand singing Avenu Malkeinu. Over 50 people attended virtually and some even had a chance to share with everyone their favorite Jewish food and their New Year wishes. On November 5, 2020, over 55 Hunters Run members virtually attended another successful program — “A Toast to Jewish War Heroes.” The highlight of the event was hearing from several Hunters Run veterans about their experiences during the time they served. Irwin Lebow, Howard Greene, Lester Pedell, Marty Gayer, Harry Rapaport, and Malya Scher had the audience both laughing and crying as they each told their story. The program ended with the audience watching video clips of Enrico Macias singing Hatikva and Kate Smith singing God Bless America. ▲ Top (l to r): Lester Pedell, Howard Greene, Irwin Lebow Bottom (l to r): Harry Rapaport, Martin Gayer, Malya Scher Hunters Run Country Club JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021 25
