Barnes Stadium. The boys took no time at all to light up the scoreboard. Less than two minutes into the game, soph- omore Jesse Salas got his kick past the Venus goalie to give the Lions a 1-0 lead (38:22). Not to be outdone, less than three minutes later, junior Diego Rivera made it 2-0 with another goal (35:47). The Lions continued their early domination. Barely five minutes later they scored again. This time junior Manuel Mercado dribbled to the right side of the field and then launched a rocket across his body that found the left corner of the goal. This gave CHS a commanding 3-0 lead (29:55). The lead grew to 4-0 when junior Fabian Chavez joined in on the fun and scored at the 16:20 mark. Meanwhile, CHS goalie, sophomore Donovan Delgado, had little to keep him busy as Venus got only two shots on goal up to this point in the game (both easily defended by Delgado). However, the Bulldogs did manage to get a surprising goal at the 4:18 mark. This resulted in the halftime score of 4-1. The second half was almost a repeat of the first half. Sophomore Esteban Mercado scored on a free kick at the 23:10 mark to make the score 5-1. At Color abounds throughout the desert trails at Big Bend National Park. 15:08 Rivera got his second goal of the evening to push the lead to 6-1. Then, with 9:17 left in the game, Salas got his second goal. This was a tremendous shot from a good 30 yards out that then made the score 7-1. Venus added a meaningless goal to make the final score 7-2. The win pushed the Lions record to 4-1-1. Go Lions! Suburban Newspapers, Inc. January 23, 2020, PAGE 5 Around the Town (continued from page 1) mountain range surrounded by weather-beaten desert. Tenacious cactus blooms in sublime southwestern sun, and the diversity of species is the best in the country. This magical place is Big Bend, Texas.” These are the words you will read in the first paragraph on the website for Big Bend National Park. I don’t know who exactly the writer is, but they have done a good job of describing this phenomenal National Park. The park turned 75 years old in 2019, and is frequently called, “Texas’ gift to the nation.” Big Bend National Park, along with the Guadalupe Mountains National Park are the only two national parks in Texas, are both are well worth visiting. Over the last few days of 2019 and into the first few days of 2020, I made my second trip as an adult to Big Bend. By going to one of the hottest places in Texas during the cooler winter months, our group was able to complete several desert hikes without having to worry about heatstroke and without having to carry large amounts of water. We also were able to wander about One of several hawks we saw in the deserts of Big Bend. on many of the rarely traveled backcountry roads and explore hidden histor- ical sites within the park. New Year’s Eve was spent with our group circled around a lantern, eat- ing supper, laughing and slightly shivering. We would love to have made a roaring fire to combat the cool desert air, but Big Bend doesn’t allow ground fires. On this particular night we were camping about 200 yards from the Rio Grande River and we could hear the river’s gentle moving water as it headed toward Mariscal Canyon. Big Bend doesn’t allow any fireworks, but after we turned the lantern off, we were treated to a sky full of amazing stars that rivaled any fireworks show I have ever seen. Big Bend is a Dark Sky Sanctuary, which means it is far enough away from man-made light to boast exceptional starry skies. Photographers flock to Dark Sky Sanctuaries to take stellar pictures of the sky, stars, the Milky Way, the moon, and any spec- tacular astronomical objects. Two of our group are photographers, and they did get some great pictures during several evenings. We celebrated this first day of 2020 with a six mile hike up to Mariscal Canyon and enjoyed views for miles across Big Bend and across the Rio Grande into Mexico. After our hike we continued our back-country drive up to the old Mariscal Mine, and of course more photographs. The solitude and amazing quiet of Big Bend was not the usual way peo- ple celebrate the new year, but I will say it was one of my most memorable new years.
