FROM THE DESK OF… Rabbi Matt Cutler Add a Glass of Water To Your Passover Seder: The Importance of Miriam's Cup May we never forget how God with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm delivered our ancestors from the harsh rule of Pharaoh. May we recall the Exodus that led us to the foot of Mount Sinai where we embraced God’s laws and Torah to guide us. Each generation is obligated to embrace the tradition and claim it as their own. Through the Seder experience, we reenact the story as if we were there. The rituals spark collective memories from our history and food stirs the emotions. We remember… the tears of our slavery; taste the bitter herbs; the pain of our bondage; dip parsley into salt water; feel the plight from slavery to freedom; eat matzah; rejoice as our ancestors did to embrace God as they did through the rituals of the Temple in Jerusalem; eat roasted meats and sweet desserts; and finally, yearn for the Messianic ideal of complete redemption; end the seder by saying “next year in Jerusalem.” Memory at this season is not enough. We should be emboldened by action. We are God’s partners in this journey and we should not expect to be served, but to step up and share the responsibility of our redemption. Social action and advocacy are seeds that lead to tikun olam—world repair. Just as our ancestors journeyed, we too must move the agenda of our lives forward to create a new level of kedusha–-holiness. In this regard, I implore you to add to the Hagadah that you will use at the seder by picking readings that add to the significance of the holiday. In addition, add a ritual object or two to bring a contemporary twist to this never ending story of ours. Here is a new ritual—well it’s not so new, but it has new significance this year. Reclaim the voices of the #MeToo movement. Hear women’s voices that have been silenced by tradition for far too long. Put an orange on the seder plate—a symbol that goes back to the 1970's when the fight for woman to be rabbis was in full swing. Some said that a woman on the bema was as foreign as an orange on the Passover table. As a symbol of strength, put an orange on the table and explain with pride why it is there. Perhaps we can add a glass of water and put it next to Elijah’s Cup. This is Miriam’s Cup and it is a relatively new ritual object that is placed on the seder table. Miriam’s Cup is filled with water. It serves as a symbol of Miriam’s Well, which was the source of water for the Israelites in the desert. Putting a Miriam’s Cup on your table is a way of making your seder more inclusive. It is also a way of drawing attention to the importance of Miriam and the other women of the Exodus story; women who have sometimes been overlooked, but about whom our tradition says, “If it wasn’t for the righteousness of women of that generation we would not have been redeemed from Egypt” (Babylonian Talmud, Sotah 9b). Then have each person present pour a bit of his or her water into the cup. This contribution symbolizes that, at every stage of her life, Miriam was integral in the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. We pour water, specifically, because it plays a recurring role in the Exodus–-the rescue of Moshe, the first plague in Egypt when the water is turned to blood, the parting of the Red Sea, and so on. Today, we continue the fight to protect women, to raise them up, and to honor their equality and agency. We take this moment to remember Miriam for the role model that she is, to honor the girls and women who are at the seder table, and to remember those who have touched our lives. In a terrific book, Thirst: The Desert Trilogy, Shulamith Hareven finds the voices of women who participated in the Exodus. It is a work of fiction, but it is an allegory for modern times. Her narrative shows examples of justice, asserting Jewish identity, and the importance of applying Jewish tenents into real life. Prepare for your seder by reading something like this. The Torah states:"Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her in dance with timbrels. And Miriam chanted for them, "Sing to God, for God has triumphed gloriously; horse and driver God has hurled into the sea.” Take a moment to honor the women at your seder. Ask them what achievements in their lives give them the greatest sense of pride, and celebrate their contributions within the family and in the public realm. Chag Same’ach!!! FOUNDER’S DAY SHABBAT SERVICE Founders’ Day honors the memories of Isaac Mayer Wise and Stephen S. Wise, the founders of the major institutions of Reform Judaism in America. Join us and Reform Jews from across the Capital District for the annual Founder's Day community service on Friday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m. This year's service will be held at Congregation Berith Sholom, located at 167 3rd Street in Troy. RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS Pi Day Seth Rogovoy wrote in The Forward magazine,“ In an episode of the original Star Trek, Mr. Spock— played by the late, great Jewish actor Leonard Nimoy—commands an evil computer that has taken over the life support system of the Starship Enterprise to compute Pi to the last digit. Spock therefore outwitted the murderous cyborg, which wound up self-destructing, because, as Spock explained, 'the value of Pi is a transcendental figure without resolution.' ” Being totally logical, Spock wasn’t suggesting that Pi had some sort of spiritual quality of transcendence…Pi just may have a spiritual quality of transcendence.” In that spirit, we too will celebrate Pi Day on Sunday, March 11 and Wednesday, March 14 (the actual Pi Day) with different activities and snacks reminding our students of the connections between Judaism, science, and math. Including a birthday celebration of Albert Einstein which will help them see that connection.
