Voice of the People OGV KUE TEMPLE BETH AM AFFILIATED WITH THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM • VOL 2021, NO. 2 • Adar/Nisan/Iyar 5781 • March/April 2021 FROM THE PRESIDENT A New Spring S pringtime. For me, this time of year is usually all about the Dodgers’ spring training in Arizona. The smell of freshly cut grass, cool mornings warming to a comfortable breeze. A chance for the team, and for all of us, to start anew. Eternal optimism. With all that has befallen our community-- our world — over the past year, it can be tempting to lament our lot. To mark this one year anniversary of the pandemic as a moment of despair. To mourn all that has been lost. There’s a time for that, to be sure. But this season also suggests a different approach. Maybe it’s time to take a fresh look at our world, our neighbors, our community. Maybe it’s time to shake off the doldrums of our long winter. Maybe, like the Boys in Blue, it’s time to help our world get back into shape. Temple Beth Am is up to the challenge. And to mark the moment, we are announcing a new way of thinking about our place in the world. Indeed, a reframing of new and already existing social action projects. It’s called Olam Hesed Yibaneh. (Building Our World With Lovingkindness). Our synagogue has long engaged with the community around us, from individual social action projects, to our annual Bill Strick Thanksgiving Luncheon, and all points in between. But now, some of our members most intimately engaged in these efforts have decided to ramp it up a notch. We are rebranding all our social action efforts under this single banner, and thereby presenting our members with different ways of giving back. The details of the program can be found on the back cover of this issue. They’re pretty exciting. We’ve divided the world of social engagement into three broad categories: Olam (global and international issues), Hesed (societal issues in our immediate community), and Yibaneh (organizing direct volunteer efforts). Examples of our global Olam offerings include opportunities to get involved with Jewish World Watch, HIAS, and our Refugee Task Force. Hesed includes our One LA chapter, our racial justice programs, interfaith programs, as well as our food pantry. Yibaneh includes our local Operation PB&J, Giving Spirit kits and meals for our homeless neighbors, as well as the aforementioned Thanksgiving Luncheon. As we begin to re-engage in our lives, how about doing it in a big, enormously fulfilling way? Spring brings with it the opportunity to reinvent ourselves, and this new program is perfectly poised to allow each of us to give back in a way that fits best. Check out Olam Hesed Yibaneh here: tbala.org/get-involved/social-action/olam-hesed-yibaneh You won’t be disappointed. Play ball! Stuart Tochner can be reached at stochner@tbala.org
Kol HaRav By Rabbi Hillary Chorny, Cantor T he video is about 40 seconds long. In it, a young graduate student pulls a pile of papers and books from his backpack and sets up a study area on a TEMPLE BETH AM table in a library. He takes a breath, and reaches once more into his backpack 1039 S. La Cienega Blvd., to pull out a large rock. Nothing remarkable happens: the student leans over Los Angeles, CA 90035 his paper and apparently begins to read and take notes. Time passes and he 310.652.7354 • 310.652.2384 (fax) sits up, finally, grabs the rock, and puts it back in the bag. Then he cleans up his station and walks away. SCHOOL PHONE LINE 310.652.2002 I found this short film in a collection of videos that capture rituals invented School Fax: 310.360.0850 in the course of an intensive study done in the context of the Stanford Design Lab with a focus on betham@tbala.org Ritual Design. The rock is a ritual: place an element on your desk that signifies the start of study www.tbala.org and remove it to connote that study has ended. In the exploration of ritual it turns out that there’s no mandate that ritual need be fancy or complex. The principles of ritual are: Temple Beth Am celebrates • That they have a magical, Je ne sais quoi quality traditional and innovative • They are done with intentionality Judaism and inspires • They have a symbolic quality that lends purpose beyond the practical lifelong learning in a • They evolve over time warm, embrac ing community. I started developing a curriculum around the art and science of ritual innovation a few years ago in the course that I teach for the first year students at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies. Each Stuart Tochner, President of us become ritual innovators, inventors of new traditions that are authentically linked to those Rabbi Adam Kligfeld, Senior Rabbi that are already a part of the Jewish canon. We added to the Stanford principles those which Rabbi Hillary Chorny, Cantor we identified as specifically Jewish; for example, one principle of Jewish ritual is that it becomes Rabbi Rebecca Schatz, Assistant Rabbi established through repetition. Sheryl Goldman, Executive Director There are rituals that belong to our entire family, made precious because their natural evolution Rabbi Matt Shapiro, Director of Youth Learning & Engagement is the sweet expression of a long-winded collective story. Years ago on a trip to England, we bought Dr. Erica Rothblum, Head of School a small set of salt and pepper shakers: the Queen of England (pepper) and her royal corgi (salt). We Rabbi Joel E. Rembaum, Emeritus would make the dog yip and bark when Ella was little as we passed it across the table. One Friday Rabbi Jacob Pressman,z”l Emeritus night, we had the dog bark curiously at the challot hiding beneath their cover and pretended that Rabbi Harry Silverstein,z”l Emeritus he tugged the cloth off to reveal the bread. She erupted in giggles, and the routine stuck, so much that it became ritual at the Shabbat table. Every Friday night and every Shabbat lunch, that little KOL HA’AM dog has a job guarding our challot and waiting for just the right moment to bark for our attention Editor Reyna Zack and pull the cover free. During the pandemic, I began to lean into the practice of ritualizing the mundane more and Graphic Designer Jeff Baughman more, particularly when it came to my space. Back in April, I suggested to community members over Zoom that they create a mikdash me’at, a small temple or altar of memory during Yizkor beside their digital device so they could speak to pictures of their loved ones and feel surrounded Kol Ha’am (USPS 008-599) by humanity even if they were otherwise alone. I did this in small private ways, creating a new is published bi-monthly ritual for making myself a caramel-laced cup of coffee every morning when I gave up my trips to by Temple Beth Am, the coffee shop. And I began to light a tea tree oil candle before and after my daily meditations as a 1039 South La Cienega Blvd., means of sensory transformation in the office space that otherwise feels like an unchanging cage. And if you’re feeling creative, you might venture into the purposeful creation of a new ritual in your world. As many of you know, Baruch was a gifted teacher of Hebrew literature, as well as an active member of the Library Minyan. His many students and friends, and people who knew him from the synagogue, miss his presence in their lives every day. Baruch, himself a poet, blessed us with his reading of great Hebrew poems from the bimah. His love of Hebrew literature was infectious, and brought meaning to many lives. As a lasting memorial to Baruch, and as a way of filling the huge gap left by the absence of this great teacher and friend, we are raising funds for an endowment which will allow the synagogue to invite annually well-known Hebrew literature scholars for a weekend of sharing and learning with members and guests of our synagogue.
