MAY2018 Unsung Heroes Monthly Food DistributionProgramme S ince 2012, volunteers in Braddell Heights have been partnering schools in our vicinity to pack and distribute food rations, reaching out to around 100 low-income families in our community. This is part of the We Care @ Braddell Heights initiative, with the vision to form a caring and inclusive community. The food distribution is usually conducted on a Saturday every month, based on the availability of volunteers. The process starts with volunteers and students arranging the food rations by type. Next, eight to ten items are placed into individual bags and every bag will be labelled according to Residential Zones. Subsequently, the team proceeds with distribution. Students will form groups of four, with a volunteer leading each group. They will be assigned to a Residential Zone and tasked with distributing food rations to the respective families in the area. Each team will deliver food rations to the doorstep of respective households, but their work does not end there. The team checks-in with the recipient on how he or she is doing, and if there are any feedback. At times, the recipient may not be home. In this case, the student or volunteer will try to contact the resident by phone call. If they are still unable to reach the recipient, a note will be left behind for the household to inform them to collect the item at Braddell Heights Community Club. This may sound like a simple process but a lot of effort has been put in by our volunteers to plan and facilitate the process. The programme's success is the result of the commitment and sacrifices by many who believe in doing their part to help the less fortunate in our community. The team is very appreciative for all the support provided over the years. If you are keen to take part in this programme, do send an email to PA_BraddellheightsCC@pa.gov.sg. 12

Braddell Heights NEWS Arts and Cultural Exchangein Kagoshima I n October 2017, members of the Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra (BHSO) participated in the Kagoshima-Singapore Arts & Cultural Exchange Programme 2017. Upon arrival in Kagoshima, members of the BHSO proceeded straight for rehearsal, before attending a welcome dinner hosted by the Kagoshima Prefectural Government. Our members had the opportunity to mingle and interact with their Japanese hosts and student representatives from the Reimei Senior High School. The following day, members of the BHSO held their first performance at Houzan Hall. It was an awesome experience for our members, as they shared the stage with many other Japanese arts and musical groups. They even had the opportunity to sing a Japanese song, ‘Fu Ru Sa To’, together with the rest of the performers during the finale of the concert. On the 3rd day, members of the BHSO visited the Amami-no-Sato ‘Village of Amami Island’. Our members enjoyed themselves tremendously as each of them designed their own handkerchief at a ‘Tie & Dye’ activity. After the activity, it was finally time to visit Reimei Senior High School, the only school with a symphony orchestra in Kagoshima. Our members had a warm welcome from all students. Members from BHSO were treated to an awesome performance by the students of Reimei’s Symphony Orchestra and subsequently chatted with students from Reimei Senior High School. The students of Reimei Senior High School were very enthusiastic and many of them were keen to find out more about Singapore. Before the end of the visit, our members performed for the students, to thank them for their kind hospitality. The school visit ended with a photo-taking session, documenting the beautiful memories both our members and students of Reimei Senior High School had together. On the last day, the Japanese hosts brought our members on a visit to Mount Sakurajima, one of the most active and symbolic volcanoes of Kagoshima. After a short ferry trip, and a visit to the observatory, our members soaked their tired feet at the Sakurajima Nagisa Foot Bath Park. Accompanied by the cooling weather and amazing view of Mount Sakurajima, it was indeed a wonderful closure for our members, before returning back to Singapore. 17
