Reflection Page 3 Our Continuing Journey Through the Year of St. Joseph My dear friends, Not so long ago, in that time we called normal, this time of year was chaotic at best as the school year began to come to an end, First Communions were celebrated, Confirmation ceremonies planned, often an Ordination Rite occurred, mothers were remembered and celebrated, a month long observance was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and many families started planning summer festivities and vacations. When we add in the pandemic concerns, the tensions between the great diversity of people who make up this world, and the numerous assorted issues which accompany this year it may seem almost impossible. Maybe that is one of the wonderful, unintended consequences of the Year of St, Joseph and this time in the liturgical celebrations of this time of the year. For we must never forget that we can really not separate St. Joseph and the Virgin Mary. As we pray in every Eucharistic prayer ‘Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with blessed Joseph, her spouse…we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life…’ they are bound together in eternal matrimony. As we celebrate the month of Mary and the Year of St. Joseph we might see it as one celebration which may help us through this turbulent time, for with God’s mercy comes God’s peace. As Pope Francis says in declaring the Year of St. Joseph, St. Joseph was an earthly father to Jesus in the shadows of the heavenly Father. Joseph ‘…watched over him, protected him, never leaving him to go his own way…acted as a father his whole life.’ It was in Mary and Joseph’s yes to the will of God that they ‘chose not only to bring a child into the world, but also take up the responsibility to care or that child.’ (Patris Corde 7) Pope Francis goes on to explain that whenever we accept the responsibility for the life of another we become father or mother to that person. In our baptisms we are incorporated into the Body of Christ, we become children of God, and therefore take responsibility for one another, helping to introduce each other to life and reality, the capability to make decisions from a well-formed conscience, enjoying freedom and exploring new possibilities together. In short we care called to find happiness not in mere self-sacrifice but in self-gift. This, of course, is the definition of the ‘most chaste spouse’, a summation of an attitude that is opposite of possessiveness but rather extraordinary freedom which is centered on the other. This is the love we celebrate on Mother’s Day, recognizing the blessings that a mother can be by modeling mature sacrificial love for others. This is the blessing we offer for both our own mothers and for Mary, the Mother of the Church. But it is also a blessing to Joseph, who cannot be separated from Mary, and, by extension, all of us who have accepted the responsibility of being Christian apostles. An example of this blessing is also celebrated this month in the feast of St. Damien of Malaki (May 10), a man, who during a different pandemic, chose to become father and mother to those suffering the disease of leprosy. Forgoing his own safety and comfort he chose to take the responsibility by giving of himself to tend to the needs of those who were seen to be disposable, torn from their families and homes, deposited into a deplorable situation and left to die. Into this colony of the despised, he brought hope, mercy, and charity, the love offered of self-gift, and thereby changed their lives and the life of the world. By becoming a sign pointing to a greater fatherhood he became, as Pope Francis says, like Joseph, a shadow of the heavenly father, who ‘makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, sends his rains on the just and the unjust’ (Mt 5:45) and an example for us as a shadow that follows the Son. May this be a week when we live this example of Christian apostleship and, as St. Francis of Assisi is said to have recommended, preach the Gospel at all times using words when we must. Happy Mother’s Day to all who serve as mothers. May Jesus, Mary, Joseph, St. Damien, and St. Francis pray for us. Peace and blessings, Dcn. Ed
