Our Passage from Death to Life! Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, I cordially invite you to join us in celebrating the Holy Week, the most sacred of the whole year. Each of the Holy Week liturgies contains unique spiritual significance and riches. They teach us not just in words but in eloquent actions. Unlike last year, we are able to celebrate these pivotal events of salvation together, thanks be to God! On Palm/Passion Sunday, we jubilantly march with Jesus Christ as he enters his own city, Jerusalem, as the humble King, resolute to complete his mission. Fully anticipating the rejection, betrayal, humiliation, agony and death, our Lord proceeds on. On Holy Thursday, we obey Jesus’ words: “As I have done for you, you should also do”; “Do this in remembrance of me!” We follow his selfless service by the Washing of the Feet and celebrate the Lord’s Supper, the First Eucharist! Christ shares his own body and blood with us so that he may be in us and we in him both now and until the end of time. At the end of the liturgy, we process to the place of Eucharistic reservation – the altar of repose - where we keep silent vigil in adoration, meditation, prayer, and thanksgiving. On Good Friday, we will solemnly celebrate the Passion of the Lord, as we venerate the Cross. We will also pray the Stations of the Cross. “When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself” (John 12:32). The cruel instrument of death has become the tree of life for us. The whole Church will stay at the side of the tomb of Jesus, fasting and praying. Good Friday is not just a day of mourning, but a celebration, a thanksgiving for the infinite love God showed the world through his Son’s passion. On Easter Vigil, we remember that the Light has overcome the darkness and death is dead under the eyes of those who will believe in his grace. The Easter Triduum finds its center in the vigil on Holy Saturday night, which is the greatest of all the Days of the Lord. We celebrate our liberation from sin and death through the resurrection of Christ. We are thrilled to celebrate Easter sacraments with our new members. We will rejoice in the new outpouring of God’s grace in our midst. On Easter Sunday, we celebrate Christ’s resurrection serenely and gratefully. God has raised Christ and conquered the power of death and opened for us the way to eternal life. Our celebration on this glorious day will raise us up and renew our lives by the Holy Spirit who is within us. May all who are buried with Christ in the death of baptism rise also with him to newness of life! Today’s world may have problems with resurrection, because it has problems with anything transcendent: This life is all there is; It does not get any better than this. Contrary to this prevailing worldview, we say: “No, there is more. Infinitely more!” We are here and now, but we have a citizenship in heaven through the Risen Christ. Let us celebrate our new life of Easter. Padre Paul D. Lee

From Wilton Cardinal Gregory Seeking Christ: A Reflection by Wilton Cardinal Gregory “Everyone is looking for you.” (Mark 1:37) Directed at Jesus, these are the first words spoken by Peter in the Gospel of Mark. They could easily be our own first words to Jesus: Lord, amidst so much suffering in the world today, everyone is looking for You – Your mercy, Your protection, Your care! In fact, this is precisely what Jesus desires us to say. He assures us, “Seek and you will find” (Mt 7:7); first, by plunging into the depths of our own hearts. There, He is ready to take on the yoke of our deepest fears, our sufferings and our petitions. Through hearts of prayer, we are unburdened and we are also transformed, becoming prisms through which God’s divine light shines forth. Together, nourished by the Sacraments, we become Christ’s hands and feet, and with apostolic zeal reach out to all those suffering in body, mind and spirit. This is the mission of the Church: to be the ark upon which all are saved, the boat from which we cast our nets, and the lamp that draws in all who wander and are lost. However, our ark is in need of strengthening, our nets are in need mending, and our lamp is in need of more oil! For this reason, I call upon the people of this Archdiocese to renew their An Act of Spiritual Communion commitment to Seeking Christ, which is the theme for this year’s 2021 Annual Appeal. My Jesus, Through our collective prayer and I believe that You are present sacrificial gifts, we can ensure all those in the Most Holy Sacrament. seeking Christ will find Him in our Church. I love You above all things, The pandemic has brought hardship on and I desire to receive You into my soul. everyone. I pray daily that God’s Since I cannot at this moment receive You providence will sustain you through these sacramentally, trials. It has also brought hardship on our come at least spiritually into my heart. local Church. For this reason I am eternally I embrace You as if You were already there grateful for your kindness and support. and unite myself wholly to You. May God bless you and may your Never permit me to be separated from You. faithfulness lead you to find Christ always. Amen.
Padre Paul D. Lee
