THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MAY 30, 2021 PASTOR’S COLUMN St. Joan of Arc Parish St. Louis, MO —377450 Friends, In case you missed the news last weekend, I’ve been reassigned effective June 29. I’m going back to Mary Queen of Peace in Webster Groves to serve as pastor. I was assigned there from 2010 - 2013 fresh out of the seminary. Msgr. Vince Bommarito, currently pastor of St. Ambrose is coming here to take my place. I want to say thank you for all the kind messages of thanks, appreciation and affection. They’ve warmed my heart. I’m going to miss the SJA Community very much. Plans are underway to organize a farewell celebration for our community. As soon as we have those details, we’ll pass along them along. I think, for the time being, you can save the date at least: Sunday, June 27th. Again, more details to come. And again, thank you for the continued prayers and messages of support. As I mentioned last weekend, this is a difficult move for me too. I was not planning on moving and there was much I still wanted to do and experience with the SJA and SCCA communities. The Spirit has spoken, though, and now I must Follow where He leads! A few items for the week: Flea Market – we ARE having a Flea Market this summer! Mark your calendar: July 30, July 31 and August 1. More details about drop off/pick-up times/dates are coming. There are several moving parts still in motion and we have to wait for those to fall into place. But we ARE having a Flea Market: July 30, July 31, and August 1. 48th Annual SJA Homecoming: right now there are plans to have a Homecoming this September! We’re working with the City of St. Louis to obtain the necessary permits and licenses. Keep your fingers crossed and offer up those prayers!!! It’s looking good: COVID restrictions are easing and large gatherings are restarting. I’ve already started communicating with the various city depart- ments and things are in motion. Hope to have this sewn up by the end of June. School is out! It’s time for summer vacation! Enjoy these long summer evenings! Extra time without school stress! Family time - carefree timelessness! ENJOY!! Today we celebrate the Feast Day of our Parish Patron: St Joan of Arc. Born in France somewhere around 1412, Joan heard the Voice of God at an early age calling her to serve the church by standing up to violence against Catholics during a complicated time in world history. Accused of heresy, among other crimes, Joan was martyred in 1431 when she was only 19 years old. She is a model of courage, devotion, and integrity. We honor her this weekend with the Proper Prayers for Virgin Martyrs during our celebration of Mass and by presenting roses and votive candle at her icon, located in the west transept of Church. We ask St. Joan of Arc to pray for us: may we follow her example of courage, devotion and integrity, especially in times of hardship! Know that you are loved dearly and prayed for daily! With peace and prayers for you, Father Craig Holway Pastor

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MAY 30, 2021 Liturgically speaking: May 30 - A prayer for The Most Holy Trinity Glory be to the Father, Who by His almighty power and love created me, making me in the image and likeness of God. Glory be to the Son, Who by His Precious Blood delivered me from hell, and opened for me the gates of heaven. Glory be to the Holy Spirit, Who has sanctified me in the sacrament of Baptism, and continues to sanctify me by the graces I receive daily from His bounty. Glory be to the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity, now and forever. Amen. Catholic.org May 30 - Feast of St Joan of Arc Our stained glass window shows St. Joan as soldier, saint, Maid of Orleans, portrayed by a sword. Her mission, the freeing of her native country, France from the domination of England. The fleur-de-lis, emblem of France; the flame of her martyrdom when she was burned at the stake, falsely convicted of witchcraft. Though a poor, young girl, Joan was led by Sts. Michael, Catherine and Margaret to help her country of France. She carried a white banner that showed God blessing the French royal emblem, the fleur-de-lis when she led French troops to victory. Fleur-de-lis means ‘flower of the lily’ and is a stylized lily composed of 3 petals bound together near their bases. It has always been used to symbolize the French culture and may be seen around our church building in many places. The Catholic church has used this emblem for many years as it was a symbol of the Holy Trinity as well as an emblem of the Virgin Mary as an ancient sign of purity. Today and always we seek our patron saints leadership and her intercession and say…St. Joan of Arc…pray for us! Featured Title for the Feast of the Holy Trinity On this Feast of the Holy Trinity, the Parish Library features First Comes Love: Finding Your Family in the Church and the Trinity (TH). In this book, author Scott Hahn writes of the connection between the families men and women create on earth and the divine family, the Holy Trinity. From the back cover: “Through real-life examples (both humorous and compassionate) and quotations drawn from the Scriptures, Hahn makes it clear that no matter what sort of family readers come from--no matter what sort of ‘dysfunction’ they have experienced--they can find a family in the Church.” Next week is Pentecost. Catch the Spirit and wear red!

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MAY 30, 2021 ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY St. Joan of Arc Conference Two weeks ago, a couple, JOD and PC, phoned the rectory to ask for help. They had just been evicted from their apartment and had nowhere to go. This couple had lived in that apartment for 7 years. They both had decent jobs, and kept up will all of their bills. When the pandemic hit, their lives began to crumble. First, PC began to have health issues related to the stress of COVID that required a lot of medications. Then JOD lost his job and had trouble finding new employment. Their landlord was very understanding as they began to fall behind in their rent. He was willing to wait until some of the government assistance arrived. They were finally approved for unemployment and began catching up on their bills. Unfortunately, their building was then sold to a new owner who was not so understanding. He began pressuring them for the back rent. By this time there were a number of maintenance issues in the building such as sewers backing up in the basement. The new landlord refused to deal with their concerns. Even- tually, they were forced to leave. They were only given enough time to pack a few of their belongings before the landlord locked them out. PC was not even allowed to retrieve her medications. The stress of all of this made her condition worse. By the time we met them, she was in pretty bad shape emotionally. She could hardly speak through the tears. Of course, we did what we could to help. The homeless are particularly complicated cases. First, we made sure PC could get her medications. We put them up in a motel for a couple of nights, which usually gives them time to contact other agencies for help. They were considering entering a shelter until they could sort things out. We brought them food from our pantry as well as gift cards for fuel, groceries, and fast food. We can only deal with their immediate needs to buy time until they can find more permanent solutions. Then, as we were completing the check-in process at the motel, the young woman working behind the counter asked in a whispering voice if we had a card she could use to call us later. I took her aside and asked why she needed to speak with us. She explained that she was perhaps only a few weeks behind this couple in being evicted. Even though she was working, she was still trying to get caught up on back rent and other bills. We were able to connect her with another St. Vincent de Paul Conference in Bridgeton where she lived. This was a glaring example of just how bad things have become. We are currently bracing for a tsunami. In a few weeks when the moratorium on evictions ends, the numbers of our neighbors being evicted is going to skyrocket. Even though government funds have been made available at the state and local levels, the money has been difficult to access. Some of our neighbors have been waiting for months. Only a small percentage of the government money has made it to those who need it most. As always, we rely on your generosity to do what we can in these kinds of cases. Our finances are strong at the moment, and we’re hoping they will carry us through the inevitable surge that is coming. We appreciate your ongoing support. We have returned to our general meeting schedule on the fourth Monday of each month, so feel free to join us to find out more about our work or contact us at svdp@stjoanofarcstl.com.
