St Michael & All Angels, Steventon One of the DAMASCUS Parish Churches Associate Priest: Rev Phil Sutton email: revphil@damascusparish.org.uk (01235 01235 526 114) Lay Minister: Mr Jack Jarvis (01235 831 395) Church Warden: Dr Hilary Otterburn (01235 834 725) Deputy Warden: Mr Alan Binning (01235 820 009) Dear Friends Remember Well This Easter we have been confronted with the reality that resurrection hope arises out of the distress and disorientation of death. Within two weeks of Easter our village mourned the death of three people of dedicated service and an enthusiastic commitment to bringing hope in difficult times. On Easter Day as we celebrate the gift of resurrection hope, we heard of the sudden death of Claire Ward; five days later we herd of the death of the Duke of Edinburgh and a week later, of the death of Elizabeth Burra who had played a large part in the life of our church, Choral Society before the deterioration in her health necessitated her move to sheltered accommodation. These three lives were marked by distinguished service. An ability to smile in the face of adversity and a faith that was lived out in all aspects of life. One life was lived in the public eye, whilst Claire and Elizabeth’s service were more local, yet equally commendable. The last year is yet another cruel period of history taking from us those whom we loved, ending lives cruelly and tragically. Many of us have been confronted with separation from those we have loved, losing the presence of their love in our everyday lives. As it was for the disciples, so it remains for us, that resurrection hope must be grappled with when we are at our most vulnerable, feeling alone and disorientated as to what to do next. Jesus’ response to his grieving friends was to reassure his disciples with his message of “do not be afraid” before proceeding to lead his disciples out of their self-imposed lockdown into sharing his life in all its fullness. Resurrection hope can never be private; “That is why the Church gets involved with resisting injustice, treasuring our world, tending the needy — it’s why Christians throughout the centuries have lived with compassion and love for all who are excluded and marginalised. They breathed the oxygen of hope through the resurrection of the crucified God. “The Church must go with that torrent of good news and love, transformed, celebrating, and declaring in word and deed the truth that death is not the ending, that resurrection life is offered to all.” Archbishop Welby, Easter Day message 2021. As I prepared for Claire’s funeral, I recalled the vibrancy of her gift of life to the community whether known to her or a complete stranger. There was no end to her creative talents and the depth of her true Christian love that made our lives more peaceful, colourful and secure: we remember Claire best by continuing her example. A memorial service for Claire will be held in the church on Saturday 17 July at 3.00pm; please keep this date in your diaries. Steventon’s tradition of creativity and communal service continues through Spring and into Summer as our Easter garden display gives way to the Scarecrow Trial created by Lin Dewsnap. More information in available in this magazine and on the posters around the village. Further on we look forward to the traditional and new village activities returning after a two year absence. I offer my concern and prayers for those who mourn, who live alone or are fearful for the future along with an open and warm invitation to contact me. After all service and loving care is what a church is all about! Phil Sutton 2
