FULFILLMENT FEAST OF FAITH It is interesting that during the The Second Reading Easter season, when we do not hear The Liturgy of the Word generally follows a consistent a reading from the Old Testament, it pattern of three readings and a psalm. The second reading is becomes so important. This is particularly always taken from one of the New Testament epistles or the true today. Peter’s speech begins with a book of Revelation, and generally is not intentionally aligned prayer formula familiar to Jews: “The God with either the Gospel or the first reading. of Abraham . . .” (Acts 3:13). It likewise contains the potent phrases “Holy and Where would we be without these letters in which Righteous One” and “mouth of all the great saints and apostles like Paul, Peter, James, and John prophets” (3:14, 18). Peter was stating in share their wisdom and pastoral good sense with the early no uncertain terms that the law, psalms, Christian communities? GOOD NEWS ON THE PANDEMIC FRONT – This past week the state of California lifted all of its capacity limits on indoor worship. This is wonderful news, and it is a sign that things are heading in the right direction quickly with a much lower infection rate of Covid 19 in our state. In my visits to Huntington Memorial Hospital, I can tell you that the atmosphere is dramatically different. Back in January I remember visiting many Covid patients in the ICU. As I write this, there are NO Covid patients in the HMH ICU. This is simply wonderful! However, it would be prudent to remind everyone that we are not yet completely out of the pandemic. As a result, we are advised to still maintain proper social distance (3 feet now) between households in the church. Proper hygiene is obviously also important. The use of masks is still mandated for the time being. God willing, that will eventually disappear as well. I personally can't wait for that! Our confessionals will once again begin to be utilized. Last year during the pandemic, we took advantage of the closure to renovate our confessionals and install new ventilation systems. This has been a blessing because, as a result, we are now able to use them again. All four confessionals have been renovated and are now usable. Our school is now back to full session with all grades, and it is a great joy to see the children back in their classrooms and in the playground. In addition, we are now able to have our parish organizations meet in person once again. The same is true for adult education classes such as our marriage classes. These are once again back to full sessions. LET’S GO PAPERLESS! – Last year when the pandemic hit, it became very obvious that online tithing was vitally important. Electronic giving is a tremendous convenience for our parishioners as well as for the parish. Many parishes throughout the country and in our own Archdiocese have long ago switched to electronic giving in an effort to get rid of the old-fashioned checks and cash. We have been slowly making progress on this and quite a few of our parishioners now use it exclusively but there is still a way to go. In addition, we also have “Text to Give” which allows a person to simply use a cellphone to text a donation to the parish electronically. As I’m sure you know, a great many people these days no longer use paper checks or even paper money! It is all going electronic, so the Church has to keep up with technology as well. I strongly urge you to consider switching from the old-fashioned envelopes to online giving today. You can sign up on our website: www.standrewpasadena.org Thank you!
SPECIAL MASS NEXT SUNDAY – Next Sunday, April 25th, the 9:30 a.m. Mass will be celebrated by His Excellency, Bishop Timothy Freyer, who is the Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Orange. Bishop Freyer and I are both members of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. I currently serve as the Commander of the Commandery of the West and he serves as the Senior Chaplain. The Commandery will be meeting at our parish on Sunday morning so you will see the Knights and Ladies of St. Lazarus processing in the procession. Please make them feel welcome. RESTORATION EFFORTS CONTINUE – This past week our restorer, Evan Wilson, began the efforts to restore the damaged artwork in our church narthex. This project was first started way back in 1998. I recall the extensive work done at that time as I had just arrived as Associate Pastor then. However, over the years, there have been some discoloration, chipping, and other damage done and now this is being restored. WELCOME TO ST. ANDREW! – It is once again my pleasure to welcome our new parishioners. During Lent and Easter, we received another large number of new parish registrations. We warmly welcome all of these new parishioners and especially the many young families who have now become members of our parish family. In Christ and St. Andrew, Father Gonzalez
FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR: Third Sunday of Easter Aprl 18, 2021 Jubilate Deo omnis terra, alleluia: psalmum dicite nomine eius, alleluia: date gloriam laudi eius, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. Dicite Deo, quam terriblia sunt opera tua, Domine! in multitudine virtutis tuæ mentientur tibi inimici tui. (Ps. 66:1-4) Shout joyfully to God, all the earth, alleluia; sing of his glorious name, alleluia; give him glorious praise, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Psalm verse: Say to God: “How awesome your deeds! Before your great strength your enemies cringe. The Gospel reading for this Sunday is something of an anomaly in this year of St. Mark, being taken from the Gospel according to St. Luke. It is doubly strange because the Gospels for Easter are generally taken from St. John’s Gospel. Today’s pericope picks up after the famous narrative of the Encounter at Emmaus, where two disciples, on the afternoon of the Resurrection, discussed what had happened. While they were doing so, Jesus himself came among them, though they did not recognize him. Many today see this encounter as following the Mass in the way we encounter Christ: we gather in the church for Mass and Jesus is present with us (“where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst,” Mt. 18:20) though we may not recognize him. In the Encounter at Emmaus, Jesus then broke open the scriptures to them, speaking his own word; we call this the Liturgy of the Word. In the Emmaus account the disciples invited Jesus to stay with them; in the Mass, this corresponds to the Canon, or Eucharistic Prayer, in which the consecration takes place—which was instituted at the Last Supper. In the Emmaus account, when Jesus took the bread, blessed it, and broke it, the disciples’ eyes were opened, but Jesus vanished from their sight. In the Mass, this called the Communion Rite, where the priest, acting in persona Christi (in the person of Christ) consecrates the Host; at this time, Jesus becomes present: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity: real-ly and truly present, and we who are faithful recognize him. The Precious Body is then taken by the priest-celebrant and is broken and distributed as Communion to the faithful. It was in this final correspondence that the disciples recognized their Lord in the breaking of the bread, as do we—Jesus’ own flesh and blood for the life of the world (Jn. 6:51), whose flesh is true food, and whose blood is true drink (Jn. 6:55). It is after this that today’s Gospel begins. The disciples, having recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread, return with fervor to the twelve to report what they had seen. While they are still speaking, Jesus appears in their midst. It is worth noting that in other Gospels, the episode of “Doubting Thomas” takes place when Jesus appears to the twelve; but, in light of St. Thomas’s confession of faith—“My Lord and my God!—it is better to call that episode “The Belief of Thomas.” An allusion to this detail is perhaps mentioned here when Jesus says, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” Clearly, St. Thomas was not the only one to nurse doubts! After this, Jesus proclaims his Resurrection and all that they are witnessing to be the fulfilment of scripture (as he had just done with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus), and the beginning of the Church. The disciples’ reaction to all this was a complete conversion—they soon went out to the ends of the earth to proclaim this Good News—the Gospel—to all nations. For us, in our weekly encounter with the Divine Presence in the Eucharist, how are we affected? How are we transfigured by the risen Lord? What will our response be—to go out and stay mute? Or will we go out and proclaim the Good News of the Resurrection by our lives?

Nuestros confesionarios volverán a empezar a utilizarse.
¡BIENVENIDOS A SAN ANDRÉS!
