HOLY WEEK – Today, Palm Sunday, we begin the most solemn week in the Christian year. During this week we will commemorate once more the saving mysteries of our redemption: The Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Church’s Liturgy is always a great teacher but never more so than during this week. Having been renewed by the graces of Lent, I now urge you to make this coming week truly holy by participating fully in the various liturgies which are so rich in content. Please plan on the following: Tuesday of Holy Week: Penance Service – we will be having our annual Lenten Penance Service on Tuesday, March 30th at 7:15 p.m. There will be several visiting priests in addition to our parish priests who will be hearing Confessions. At the end of the Holy Hour we will have Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. A holy Confession is the absolute best way to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity! If you are unable to make it to the Penance Service, there will be additional times for Confessions as announced elsewhere in this bulletin. HOLY THURSDAY – On this day we recall the institution of the two great Sacraments of Holy Orders and the Most Holy Eucharist during the Last Supper of Jesus. Our Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper will take place at 7:00 p.m. Although this year, due to the covid restrictions, we cannot have the traditional Washing of the Feet, the Liturgy itself is very beautiful. At the end of the Mass, we would ordinarily have an Eucharistic Procession but that is also not allowed this year. Instead, we will have a brief time of adoration in the church at the end of Mass prior to departure. GOOD FRIDAY – This most solemn day commemorates the Passion and Death of Jesus on the cross for our salvation. Our traditional mid-day service will begin with the simple Stations of the Cross at 12:00 noon. Once we reach the 12th Station recalling Christ’s crucifixion, we will then have a preached meditation on the Seven Last Words of Christ from the Cross. The preached meditations will be interspersed with the musical rendition of the Last Words. This year, that too, will be simpler as choirs are not permitted. The Solemn Liturgy will then commence at 1:30 p.m. Ordinarily we would have had the procession with the image of the Dead Christ to the Parish Hall but that will not be permitted this year. The entire 3-hour service is one of the most moving and prayerful experiences of the year. Try to stay for all three parts and make Good Friday a prayerful Day of Recollection this year. EASTER! – Our celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord commences with the Solemn Easter Vigil which will be celebrated at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 3rd. It will begin outside the front of the church with the blessing of the Easter Fire. This is followed by the procession through the darkened church with the great light of the Easter Candle as we hear the proclamation of our salvation. During this Mass, our catechumens will receive the Sacraments of Initiation. This is the most solemn Liturgy of the Church’s entire year. On Easter Sunday we rejoice in the Risen Lord! Join your fellow parishioners in worship during any of the regular Sunday Masses. Finally, together with Father Rodriguez and the entire Parish Staff, I wish all of you a most blessed and joyful Easter! May the Risen Lord bless you and your family! In Christ and St. Andrew, Father Gonzalez

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR: Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord March 28, 2021 Hosanna filio David: benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Rex Israel: Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna to the Son of David: blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. O King of Israel: Hosanna in the highest. Because of the ongoing pandemic, in place of the normal procession, with its first Gospel, blessing of palms, and triumphal entry into the church, we use the simple entrance today, beginning Mass as on any other Sunday. But the cry of “Hosanna!” will still sound in the opening antiphon, and in the hymn: All Glory, Laud, and Honor] Hosanna! Come, save! One of the many words left untranslated from various early languages (ancient Hebrew, Aramaic, Ancient Greek), the word has taken on new meanings and even new grammatical functions through long use outside its language of origin. (For example, the term hosanna, from the Ancient Greek ὡσαννά (hōsanná), from Aramaic '( אנעשואōsha‘nā), from Biblical Hebrew אָנעַׁשֹוה (hōsha‘nā, “please save”). It came into liturgical use well before the time of Jesus, and had become an acclamation of praise, with the connotation of deliverance: hence, its use by the crowds at Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem as they welcome and acknowledge their Messiah. Today, we commemorate Jesus’s triumphal entry, when the people hailed him as Messiah; fickle, as all humans tend to be, these very same people would, only days later, change their cries from “hosanna!” to “crucify him!” The readings and music this week reflect this multi-faceted feast: beginning in triumph, it ends in sorrow and death; and yet we know that this is not the end of the story: the Resurrection and eternal life await. In the cycle of readings for this year B, the Gospel according to St. Mark remains the focus much of the time, with noteworthy interludes from the Gospel according to St. John. But the Passion this year is taken from St. Mark, which, though the shortest of the Passion narratives, nevertheless is imbued with its own character. While the Passion according to St. Matthew begins with Judas’s betrayal, followed by the Last Supper; and St. Luke’s Passion reading begins with the Last Supper straightway, this year’s St. Mark Passion begins with a brief interlude of the scheming of the Jewish officials to arrest Jesus, and then proceeds to the remarkable episode of the Anointing at Bethany. St. Matthew’s Gospel does record this episode, as does St. John’s, but it is only read on Palm Sunday with the St. Mark Passion. The evangelist notes that the woman who anointed Jesus (traditionally considered to be Mary Magdalene) used “costly, genuine spikenard.” Even today, this oil is costly and difficult to get; its identity is somewhat disputed, though it seems clear now that this is the oil of the plant Nardostachys jatamansi, a flowering plant that is found above 18,000 feet growing on the side of exposed rock in the Himalayas. Imagine the cost of production in ancient times—the disciples note that the amount of spikenard oil used for the anointing costed about a year’s wages! Today, the oil is less expensive, though still costly; for those attending Mass in person, you will be able to experience its unique, piquant scent in the incense used during the Mass. As we disperse to begin Holy Week, we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, “the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2).

Rex Israel: Hosanna in excelsis.
