“PASSIONTIDE” AND HOLY WEEK – Today is the Fifth Sunday of Lent. Traditionally, it is the beginning of Passiontide which consists of the last two weeks of Lent and runs from today to the Easter Vigil. These last few days of Lent call for a more intense period of prayer and preparation as we await Holy Week and especially the Sacred Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter. You will notice, for instance, that the images in the church are now veiled. The rubrics of the Church call for all images to be veiled from the Vigil of the 5th Sunday of Lent until the beginning of the Easter Vigil. Crosses are veiled from the Vigil of the 5th Sunday of Lent until the Liturgy of Good Friday. The purpose is to help us focus more clearly upon the mysteries of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. It also brings about a more solemn atmosphere in the church calling to mind the darkness of the Passion and Death of Jesus. At the Easter Vigil, a dramatic transformation takes place as the church itself is transformed from darkness to light and sadness to joy. The Sacred Liturgy is always a great teacher, and this is especially true during the liturgies of Holy Week. Last year, as we all remember, we were deprived on the public worship in Holy Week and throughout the entire Easter season due to the pandemic. Thankfully, we have now entered in the "red" tier in the County of Los Angeles so we will have regular worship. Covid restrictions still are in place, however. Because of that we will continue to livestream our Sunday Masses at 9:30 a.m. in English and at 11:00 a.m. in Spanish. In addition, we will also livestream our Holy Week Liturgies of Holy Thursday and Good Friday as well as Easter Sunday. (The link is found on our parish website: www.standrewpasadena.org) PALM SUNDAY – Next Sunday is Palm Sunday which marks the beginning of Holy Week and Our Lord’s triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. Palms will be blessed at all Masses. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic restrictions, we cannot have the usual processions. God willing, they will return next year. SACRED TRIDUUM – Keep your calendar open for Holy Thursday evening (4/1/21) and Good Friday afternoon (4/2/21) so you can participate fully in the beautiful Liturgies of Holy Week. The entire Holy Week schedule is in this week's bulletin so you can plan. PENANCE SERVICES – Our Parish Penance Service will take place on Tuesday of Holy Week, March 30th at 7:15 p.m. It will include the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. There will also be additional Confession times provided throughout Holy Week for those who can't come to the Penance Service. STATIONS OF THE CROSS – Don’t forget this beautiful Lenten devotion of the Way of the Cross. We pray the Stations here at St. Andrew's each Friday of Lent at 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. in English and at 7:00 p.m. in Spanish. This coming Friday will be our last regular Stations as the following Friday is Good Friday and we will pray the Stations that day at 12:00 p.m. in English and at 6:30 p.m. in Spanish. FIRST CONFESSIONS AND COMMUNIONS - this past week I had the joy of teaching the 2nd graders of our school about the Sacrament of Penance in preparation for their first Confessions which they made on Saturday. It was a great joy for me to be able to see our children in school once again! I had not seen them in a year. A few were still on Zoom due to health concerns, but I hope all will be back in person soon. The children in our Religious Education Program are also preparing to receive these Sacraments as well. DIVINE MERCY NEWS: THE NEW COVENANT
NINE ( 9 ) DAYS NOVENA & Today’s first reading is an enormously important

focus of the preceding days of Advent (which were
carried over from the end of Ordinary Time). In Lent, the
last “numbered” Sunday (i.e., the Fifth Sunday) shifts the
faithful’s focus to the Passion. This continues, naturally,
on Palm Sunday, when the Passion itself is proclaimed as
the Gospel Reading. This change starts this week.

“PASIONADA” Y SEMANA SANTA – Hoy es el quinto domingo de Cuaresma. Tradicionalmente, es el comienzo de Pasionada, que consta de las dos últimas semanas de Cuaresma y se extiende desde hoy hasta la Vigilia Pascual. Estos últimos días de Cuaresma exigen un período más intenso de oración y preparación a la espera de la Semana Santa y especialmente el Sagrado Triduo: Jueves Santo, Viernes Santo y Pascua. Notarán, por ejemplo, que las imágenes de la iglesia ahora están cubiertas. Las rúbricas de la Iglesia exigen que todas las imágenes estén cubiertas desde la Vigilia del quinto domingo de Cuaresma hasta el comienzo de la Vigilia Pascual. Las cruces están veladas desde la Vigilia del 5º Domingo de Cuaresma hasta la Liturgia del Viernes Santo. El propósito es ayudarnos a enfocarnos más claramente en los misterios de la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo. También provoca una atmósfera más solemne en la iglesia que recuerda la oscuridad de la Pasión y Muerte de Jesús. En la Vigilia Pascual, tiene lugar una transformación dramática cuando la iglesia misma se transforma de la oscuridad a la luz y de la tristeza al gozo. La Sagrada Liturgia es siempre una gran maestra, y esto es especialmente cierto durante las liturgias de la Semana Santa. El año pasado, como todos recordamos, nos privaron del culto público en Semana Santa y durante toda la temporada de Pascua debido a la pandemia. Afortunadamente, ahora hemos entrado en el nivel "rojo" en el condado de Los Ángeles, por lo que tendremos un culto regular. Sin embargo, las restricciones de Covid todavía están vigentes. Por eso, continuaremos transmitiendo en vivo nuestras Misas dominicales a las 9:30 a.m. en inglés y a las 11:00 a.m. en español. Además, también transmitiremos en vivo nuestras Liturgias de Semana Santa del Jueves Santo y Viernes Santo, así como el Domingo de Resurrección. SERVICIOS DE PENITENCIA – Nuestro servicio de penitencia parroquial se llevará a cabo el martes de Semana Santa, 30 de marzo a las 7:15 p.m. Incluirá la Exposición del Santísimo Sacramento y la Bendición. También habrá tiempos de confesión adicionales durante la Semana Santa para aquellos que no pueden asistir al Servicio de Penitencia.
VÍA CRUCIS – No olvide esta hermosa devoción cuaresmal del Vía Crucis. Rezamos las estaciones aquí en San Andrés cada viernes de Cuaresma a las 9:00 a.m. y 5:30 p.m. en inglés y a las 7:00 p.m. en español. El próximo viernes serán nuestras últimas estaciones regulares ya que el siguiente viernes es Viernes Santo y rezaremos las estaciones ese día a las 12:00 p.m. en inglés y a las 6:30 p.m. en español. PRIMERAS CONFESIONES Y COMUNIONES – La semana pasada tuve la alegría de enseñar a los alumnos de 2º grado de nuestra escuela sobre el Sacramento de la Penitencia en preparación para sus primeras Confesiones que hicieron el sábado. ¡Fue una gran alegría para mí poder ver a nuestros niños en la escuela una vez más! No los había visto en un año. Algunos todavía estaban en Zoom debido a precauciones de salud, pero espero que todos vuelvan en persona pronto. Los niños de nuestro programa de educación religiosa también se están preparando para recibir estos sacramentos. MISION PARROQUIAL – Nuestra Misión Parroquial durante la Cuaresma comienza mañana, lunes a viernes, marzo 22 a 25. Sera conducida por el Padre Martin Rodríguez, nuestro Vicario Parroquial. Cada noche comenzaremos con la Misa de 6:30 p.m. en la iglesia y después seguimos con la conferencia espiritual del Padre Martin.
