Pastor’s Letter Remember that Love Easter Sunday Is Stronger than Death Dear Parish Family, Catholicism is a faith that is rich in symbols. We began the season of Lent, a little more than six weeks ago, by taking upon ourselves a gritty cross of burnt palm. We took upon ourselves a reminder that we are human and fragile, that our world and our lives can be dark and cruel, and that we ourselves are mortal. It is easy to pick out the Catholics on Ash Wednesday with our smudged foreheads. Many of us remember the words that once went with this signing: “Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return.” But these words and the burnt ashes are really only half the story. The message of Easter is that darkness, sin, pain, hatred, and even death can all be overcome. The power of God, which is the power of love, can overcome everything. So today there is another sign and another reminder. At Mass today, after the homily, you will renew your Baptismal promises. Then a rich symbol, a splash of cold water, a reminder of Baptism, is sprinkled over all. If there were words to go with this sprinkling they would surely be: “Remember that love is stronger than death, and to this love you are returned.” The water dries quickly but for all of us who are blessed, its meaning stays with us. This water washes away the smudge, the darkness, the pain, the hate, and even death. In a sense this is what our church is about each day. We help those in pain, we carry others’ burdens, we pray with young and old, we welcome the newborn and gently commend to our God those who have died. We know all about the world and the way it is but we also know that it is only half the story. We know that some things last: like faith, hope and love, and that the greatest gift is love. I am glad that you have chosen to come here and worship today. Our parish is a place of life and hope for all. Each day we do our best to love and serve others with the mission of Christ – things like feeding the hungry, educating our young, lifting the spirits of those who are grieving and struggling, and most of all – week by week – praying and worshiping with each other. Our hope and strength come from the faith of people like you. So remember this: Love is stronger than death, and unto love you are returned. I wish you a blessed and joyful Easter. Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Reflections On the Gospel from Pax Christi April 05, 2015 It’s Easter, a time of resurrection joy and celebration! But wait. Look carefully at the readings. No doubt Jesus lives, but there are so many references to his suffering and the anxiety of his friends and followers. Then there’s this strange juxtaposition: Christ has been sacrificed…. Let us then feast with joy. Sounds a bit selfish, no? But there’s more. There is also a clear commission to carry Jesus’s ministry forward. Not much time to sit around rejoicing. We have work to do. It is time for us to resurrect spirits from the day-to-day sorrows and pains of life. It is time for us to find our Easter joy in the service of others. Easter Blessings of Love and Light from Pax Christi Metro New York!
Our Series on Faith in the Modern World Continues The Pope and The Poor Exploring the Message And Ministry of Pope Francis In his words, and even more so in his ministry, Pope Francis challenged Christians in their service of the poor. Tonight we will explore our churches understanding and teaching on poverty. From the words of Jesus to the Papal Encyclicals of our last 125 years we are a church challenged to care for the poor. We will examine how our community has understood this most difficult of all human realities. With Fr. Mike Vetrano on Monday, April 20 at 7 PM in our Happening in our Parish Dear Friends, This year our parish raised almost 1.2 million dollars for our In Nomine Domini Fund. The In Nomine Domini Fund, established by Msgr. Trench, is dedicated to the renewal and support of our beautiful Basilica church. This year we will begin projects that by the middle of 2016 will bring us: The renewal of our Bell Tower New Heating and Air Conditioning Lighting improvements both inside and out. New Carpet Restored Pews Rest Room Facilities If you did not get a chance to participate in this effort it is not too late. The In Nomine Domini Fund will always remain open for the preservation of our beautiful church. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Easter 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Risen Lord: How changed is the world this Easter morn! How wondrous the truth on the lips of His faithful disciples! Can there be any chant more beautiful, any news more desired, any heart that could seek for more? Jesus Christ is Risen! It is true! He is Risen! Alleluia! The long Lent of human history was ended that first Easter Sunday morn when Mary Magdalen discovered that the tomb was empty and the body of her beloved Lord was missing. But that body, cruelly put to death on the tree of Calvary, was not missing. It was transformed! It was glorified! For the Son of God made man fulfilled His destiny on this earth and so transformed our destiny from sin and death to life in Him, life eternal. You and I are the recipients of the long journey of love that Jesus travelled from Galilee to Jerusalem, from birth in a stable to death on a cross. When Jesus took that sign of death and made it the sign of glory, He accomplished the will of the Father who so loved the world that He sent His Son not to condemn but to save the world. And this is the salvation which is ours: Life in Christ Jesus, Life eternal! My prayer this Easter is that we all with deep faith acknowledge with joy and gratitude that God’s love triumphed in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead and that His resurrection gives us our new destiny: we share His divine life now and will share it with Him forever in glory! My prayer is that we all participate in Mass this Easter Sunday as a pledge of our fidelity to Him who died and rose. My prayer is that we greet one another with that ancient greeting of Christians: Christ is risen! He is truly risen. Alleluia. If we do that then I am confident we will be renewed in His life and we will be so filled with His Spirit that we will seek to share His life with others and witness His life to the world. I am confident that we will be more eager to care for the sick, reach out to the poor, bear one another’s burdens and be true brothers and sisters by prayer and action to all who need us in our parishes, our communities, our nation and the world. The world needs the witness of our faith in the Risen Christ. The world needs the witness of our hope for the future. The world needs our love that embraces all those whom our Savior embraced from the cross. May they too share in the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! For He is Risen. He is truly risen. Alleluia! ¡Aleluya!
