From Our Pastor We Hold Each Other in Prayer for Healing Every day I look upon the Wood of the Cross in our Church. Hundreds of prayers of petition are nailed there reminding us that we are a people of faith who offer our prayer seeking God to hear our needs. So many of the prayers and petitions are for healing of our family and for friends and members of our community. It is an amazing gift to say to someone who has shared their pain and sorrow with us that we will pray for them and their intentions. So often, it leaves them speechless but grateful for the gesture of care and concern. Our prayers for healing of one another bring us to the realization that pain and suffering, illness of body, mind, and spirit are not personal experiences only, but also, a shared experience. When one member of the Body of Christ is in pain, the entire Body suffers and seeks healing. This is a profound reality for us best demonstrated by the prayer crosses that grace our Mercy Tree. We place our prayers on the cross because we believe that the Cross of Jesus carries all our burdens, our weakness, and our suffering. The saving Cross of Jesus heals our pain and comforts us for those who walk in His ways. Jesus said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Matt. 11) Through the power of God’s healing presence, we discover we are not alone in our pain and suffering. An entire community of friends, family, and faithful people are united with us. This is the sacrament of healing from the Church who celebrates the God of Healing; the One who makes us whole. We pray: Our Lady of the Assumption Lord of Heaven, Mission Statement and Welcome I rest underneath your mighty wings of love. “Our Lady of the Assumption is a welcoming community of I dwell within your gentle heart. disciples of Jesus Christ in the Roman Catholic Church. Kids’ Column Safe Environment Use creative problem solving to find new ways to protect children In the Protecting God’s Children program, adults learn how to identify potential signs of abuse and how to pick up on red flag behaviors that indicate a potential predator, even before abuse happens. Another tool in the arsenal of child protection is creative problem solving, where adults learn to think outside the box when it comes to finding solutions for protecting children. One very effective creative problem-solving tool is to refocus the group’s thinking, turning it away from the perceived “problem” and productively more toward a collaborative solution. Consider the challenge of how to deal with registered sex offenders whose children attend the school or participate in religious education at the parish. Rather than discuss the topic, the leader might ask participants to finish the following sentences, “Wouldn’t it be awful if«” and “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if«” Once everyone has provided responses, the group can look through the answers to find connecting themes that may provide a previously untried solution.
