EDITORIAL My dear Friends may I wish you a very happy New Year?! It seems difficult to believe that we are now into the year 2020. At the dawn of this new decade we are at a crossroad for the future of the life of our precious and beautiful planet. The U.K. Met Office has concluded that the last decade has been the warmest since records began and that the globe will pass the safety limit of warming in eleven and a half years if we carry on as we are. This sounds very dramatic but all the scientific evidence suggests this is so. The well respected naturalist and broadcaster, Sir David Attenborough, has for the last decade or so, highlighted, predicted and warned us of the destruction and death of life not only of the earth but also in our irreplaceable oceans if we do not halt the misuse of our natural resources. Just this week, he challenges us at the start of the new decade that we are at “the moment of crisis”. The BBC news channel has taken up this challenge in the project “Our Planet Matters,” bringing before us what we can do in our ways of living to do our “bit”. Items will encourage us and industry to really think about how we are affecting our environment. As individuals, what we do or not may seem so insignificant but if all of us do change our way of thinking and acting it surely can. Young people are acutely aware of “the moment of crisis” for it is their very future life at stake and some are afraid. One of my present day heroines is Greta Thonberg. She reminds me of the prophets of old! We must listen to the young people of our world. The National Trust celebrates 125years since its founding by the visionary people of that time. These pioneers understood the value of the beauty of out door spaces and encouraged those who lived in Victorian crowded drab cities to experience the physical and spiritual benefits of walking in the natural countryside. We are fortunate to have several near to us. I read a lovely description of Stourhead the other day – “a living work of art”. Our natural world can inescapably be so described and I expect most of us have been deeply moved by some aspect of it at some time in our lives! Now in our generation we have inherited the custody of our treasured and venerated living planet. Surely we can rise to the challenge! Let it start with each of us thinking and living in a new way. With love to you All Yolanda QUEEN CAMEL CARES Queen Camel Cares is a village-based support network for anyone requiring a bit of extra help at times when life is particularly challenging. Please ring Morwenna Ford (850 300) or Paul Davis (850 139) if you think we might be able to make a difference. 2

CHRISTMAS FAYRE As always, this was a most convivial and bustling two hours and brought together a wide range of villagers. Thank you to everyone who came along and supported the Fayre as well as those who donated items. So many people had worked tirelessly beforehand preparing items for sale such as Christmas crackers, hand-made gifts, holly wreaths and Christmas cakes. Thank you, too, to all the stall holders who ensured their stalls looked attractive and eye catching. Those preparing and serving coffee/teas were kept busy all morning and the mince pies proved very popular. Yet again the Fayre was a very sociable affair and a fitting prelude for all the events leading up to Christmas. After expenses, £2,000 was raised which was a terrific result. Thank you all very much indeed. ********* QUEEN CAMEL MEMORIAL HALL 200 Club 2019 Christmas Bonanza winners:- First Prize:- £100 Jane McDonald– No 72 Second Prize:- £75 Jo Pender-Cudlip– No 128 Third Prize:- £50 Hannah Crinks - No 74 Fourth Prize:- £25 John Turner – No 6 January 2020 First Prize:- £30 Julia Faulkner – No. 64 Second prize:- £25 Ann Holland No. 85 Third Prize:- £20 Bryan Hewlett – No.124 Fourth Prize:- £15 Alan Wright – No. 50 Fifth Prize:- £10 Mr & Mrs D Rankin– No. 8 Now only £10 to join until October!! QUEEN CAMEL CHURCH NEWS HAPPENINGS IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS . . . Thank you to Hannah Crinks and her family for delivering and donating the wonderful Christmas tree that greeted everyone as they came into church during December and early January. We would also like to thank all those who helped load the tree for its journey to the church, those who unloaded it and those who helped erect and remove it. It was the most magnificent tree! The Christmas Fayre at the end of November was well supported and raised £2000. A full report appears elsewhere in the magazine. The Carol Service drew a large congregation with mulled wine and mince pies at its conclusion. The service was taken by David Osborne who engaged fully with the children, congregation and readers. Thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the service so enjoyable and meaningful. Unfortunately, Carol Singing had to be cancelled because of heavy rain! The Crib Service on Christmas Eve was, once again, the highlight of our Christmas services, especially for the very young. The Camel Club children had worked extremely hard to learn their lines and attend special rehearsals and they gave a delightful and confident performance. Particular thanks to Marian, Barbara, Philippa, Jo and Dana for all their hard work in producing such a very special service for all the family. Although Dr Who has left, the Tardis remains in church and is proving very popular with Bumps, Tots and Toddlers. The Christmas Day Family Service with Holy Communion was very well attended and enjoyed by everyone. Christingle with the Camel Club at the beginning of December, preceded by breakfast, was an enjoyable service with young and old alike entering into the spirit of making their own Christingles. Thacher Chapel: part of the floor has been replaced with oak parquet flooring to match the existing floor and we are in the throes of having a section of stained glass window restored as a few of the coloured pieces were broken. COMING UP . . . A few dates for your diary: Sunday, 22nd March – Mothering Sunday Sunday, 12th April – Easter Sunday Friday 8th – Sunday 10th May – 75th VE Commemorative Weekend – full details to follow Saturday 6th June – Church Path Fayre 8

For more information please contact Morwenna Ford : 01935 850 300 ********* QUEEN CAMEL NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH I have recently taken over responsibility for the Queen Camel Neighbourhood Watch. It was latterly run by Sue Cole extremely efficiently and taking on this mantel after Sue is quite daunting! I wondered if proposing a few minor changes to simplify the process may make it a little more accessible to more people. After consulting Thelma Mead, our local Police Community Support Officer (PCSO), we will be setting up a NEW LOOK Queen Camel Neighbourhood Watch – I would very much appreciate your comments and hope that you may all feel able to get involved. If anyone has a Neighbourhood Watch concern then the notification process should be: 1) Report any serious crime immediately to the Police on 999. 2) Report a less serious crime to the Police on 101. 3) Once you have done one of the above I would ask that you also report the crime to me by e-mail to judecoggins@queencamelpc.org.uk or phone me/leave a message on 07971 256701. 4) Your message will then be posted on the Neighbourhood Watch web-site that you will find on the link from the new QCPC website – NOTE that NO names or addresses will be entered on the report. We are of course all very lucky to live in such a safe and happy village so let’s work to keep it that way. Thanks for all your input. Jude Coggins 9

CAMEL’S EYE Never bet on a sure thing. Three months back Camels’ Eye declared that 12th December was Decision Day but how wrong can you be?! Come the 12th the Secretary of State for Transport wasn’t even in his office - he had his seat to worry about - so the A303 is still in his In tray. And things being as they are it is probable that he will give schemes like the Morpeth bypass, the M1-M6 link road and the Newcastle-Gateshead bypass the green light before he gets round to the A303. Still it’s not all bad: the longer it takes the more time he will have to examine the Camels’ alternative plan for the Sparkford interchange which is supposed to save time, money, congestion and risks to life and limb during construction, and to reduce travel costs and our carbon footprint forever after. Which would be nice. Whatever, we’ll certainly have more houses. Planning consent has been granted for three dwellings on South Street and in Queen Camel applications have gone in for another nine by England’s Mead and 43 along the West Camel Road. Whether or not these ones get consent Queen Camel has been earmarked for ‘sustainable’ development because its many services – medical centre, school, shop, post-office, pub, bus service etc – make it easier to get by without having to keep jumping into a car and burning more fossil fuels. The District Council reckon we could do with 60 dwellings all told over the next fifteen years or so, and that apart Queen Camel residents will soon have a chance to vote on our own Neighbourhood Plan in a referendum. In the meantime our County and District Councils are discussing their own relationships. Closer collaboration? Partnership? Self- immolation, to be replaced by a single Unitary Authority? Who knows, but we will of course be consulted - we always are. P.P-C. 10.30am – 12 noon in the Memorial Hall Tuesday 11th February Book & Jigsaw exchange Bottle top collection for Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance Come and meet your friends, make new friends and enjoy good coffee and cake

LETTER FROM THE RIGHT REVD. PETER HANCOCK BISHOP OF BATH AND WELLS Pick up your Bible with a new joy Martin Niemöller was a Lutheran Pastor, best known for his opposition to the Nazi party during the 1930’s. As a consequence he was imprisoned between 1938 and 1945, first in the Sachsenhausen and secondly in the Dachau concentration camps. He was fortunate to survive these experiences and, on his release, became a pacifist and a committed campaigner for nuclear disarmament. A former U Boat Commander, in his book, ‘From U Boat to Pulpit’, he wrote about what the Bible meant to him during his imprisonment which included years of solitary confinement. He wrote: ‘The word of God was simply everything to me, comfort and strength, guidance and hope, master of my days and companion of my nights. The bread that kept me from starvation and the water of life which refreshed my soul. And even more, solitary confinement ceased to be solitary.’ These extraordinary words remind me of the hymn ‘Lord thy word abideth,’ the first three verses of which are are: Lord, thy Word abideth, When our foes are near us, then thy Word doth cheer us, and our footsteps guideth; who its truth believeth Word of consolation, message of salvation. light and joy receiveth. When the storms are o'er us, and dark clouds before us, then its light directeth, and our way protecteth. The Bible is still the most published and the most read book in the world. What makes it unique however, is that the books of the Bible were inspired by the Spirit of God and is the place where Christ is found and proclaimed and where God speaks. And St Paul, writing about the scriptures (The Old Testament) said, ‘For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.’ (Romans 15:4) As we come to Lent might I suggest that we pick up our Bibles with a new joy, with fresh eyes and with a renewed determination to spend time each day reading the Bible. If we do we will find, as Niemöller and countless other people before us have done, that the Bible is indeed the Word of Life, the pathway to Jesus and the doorway to salvation. If we are looking for comfort and strength, guidance and hope we can find all those things within its pages. The Right Revd Peter Hancock Bishop of Bath and Wells 18
