Further to my article that appeared within the last newsletter (No. 57). Wires got crossed with regard to the reference to both the Golden Arrow and Night Ferry. The Invicta sailed from Dover or Folkstone to Calais with the Golden Arrow Passengers, she was taken over for the war effort but returned after the conflict. The Night Ferry Wagon Lits coaches were loaded onto a ferry at Dover that sailed to Dunkirk. The two ferries were The Hampton & The Shepperton, the CIWL car were loaded simultaneously side by side obviously for balance reasons. LNER PACIFICS The Eastern Region of British Railways Pacific Class Locomotive Pullman Workings. Tommy Knox. As ever my thanks to Tommy Knox for the following information on steam hauled Pullman services on the East Coast Main Line. Within the text reference is made to ‘Up’ and ‘Dn’ workings. These relate thus, an ‘Up’ working is a service to London Kings Cross, and ‘Dn’ is a ‘Down’ working from Kings Cross. I.e. All lines to any of London’s terminals are classified as the ‘UP Line’. Next year Matt Browning will make a new double tabletop with a similar angled end, so as the passing space between the two is improved. This will be based on double tables within the Belmond British Pullman Cars. Matt also replaced damaged edge mouldings on two other tables. (I had a quantity of mahogany hockey-stick mouldings to match specially made. - enough for 3 tables and repairs)." ©R.Jones. Dartington Crystal Ceiling Fitting Shades. Prior to Christmas I received the delivery of 25 glass shades from Dartington Crystal. These are for the ceiling fittings within AQUILA replacing the burnt and damaged plastic ones put in by VSO-E (with 3 spares). They have been expertly reproduced from an original wall one sent to them, by making a mould. Quite a labour-intensive job as each was blown, cut, ground and acid etched individually. I brought home all the ceiling fittings ready and have just tried one out - which fits perfectly. This will keep me busy over Christmas fitting them into the holders, with all the tiny machine screws to hold them in place. Pullman Report CAR No. 89 Marcus Mayers ©M.Mayers. I am pleased to advise that I have just purchased Motor Brake Parlour CAR No. 89 formerly from 5BEL set No. 3051 from the Little Inn at Rowarth. I hope to restore the car and currently looking for a restoration team to undertake restoration to hauled running condition for operation on a yet to be identified preserved railway line. I plan to utilise as many of the original features and marquetry. My plan is to refit the draw gear and corridor connection to be Mk1 standards. Inside will not be original seats as I want to make her fully disabled compliant, taking advantage of the guard’s van double doors. CAR No. 89 has been static at the Little Inn at Rowarth since June 1972. The car is mainly watertight with some damage to the roof from a shower that has been fitted rather than ingress. I have Mk1 SK as a donor for required parts, I plan to strip the required parts including electrical braking system, buckeyes, draw gear, one corridor end and I may require a toilet and water tank s during the summer of 2021. The plan is for the car to be moved in April 2021 when a temporary track section will be installed to allow the car to be hauled onto road transport trailer. Due to the imminent closure of Tearne Transfer and Digital Print Ltd. of Birmingham at the end of 2020, a complete set of Pullman Transfers have been purchased for CAR No. 36 (HERMIONE) and was delivered to Pevensey on December 11th. This was the result of information from Richard Jones, owner of ‘AQUILA’ who has also bought a complete set consisting of, from the top, the word ‘PULLMAN’ in individual letters, motifs for each side of this word, vertical arrows for the side of each window, decorative corners for the lining, Pullman Coats of Arms, and the cartouches each end of the name/number panel. These were available in ‘self-adhesive’ or ‘varnish fix’ versions but now understood to have all been sold. ©D.Jones. Pullman CAR No. 36 Transfers. As the supply of such railway transfers may be problematic in the future, I also purchased sets of British Railways ‘Cycling Lion’ emblems for Atlantic locomotive ‘BEACHY HEAD’ and South Eastern Chatham Railway crest transfers for the projected ‘E’ Class locomotive, although these will not be needed for at least 10 years! It is believed that Tearn’s have closed due to the retirement of the owning family. PULLMAN - Edition No.58 - January & February 2021 “Information is for sharing and not gathering dust” Page 42 of 56
Pullman Report The Kent & East Sussex Railway John Wheller Kent and East Sussex Railway. All is now quiet in the Rother Valley, we are shut down again, the Santa Specials cancelled, no mulled wine, no hot chestnuts, just silence. All the work the staff and volunteers have put in has come to nothing and so at the end of 2020 we are in a Tier 4 lockdown. The railway is once again only carrying out security checks and essential preventative maintenance, with the workshops closed until further notice. Wealden Pullman Dining Train. No sooner had the last issue of the Newsletter been published when we went into lockdown again and everything stopped. With the lockdown coming to an end plans were made to carry on with the Wealden Pullman and then it`s Tier 3 conditions and it all stops again. Now we are in Tier 4 and no service will run until the new season, which for the dining train next year, should be Mothering Sunday. Only time will tell when we are able to start running again. Mark 1 (Restaurant Unclassified) E1987. The coach is still down at Eastleigh with no date confirmed for its planned return to Tenterden. The C & W shed had been trying to complete other projects currently in the shed to make space for its return, but this has now ceased as the shed is locked down. It had been proposed to start work on the restoration of its commonwealth bogies which require a complete strip down but will now have to wait. Let us hope we all have something positive to report next time. . PULLMAN - Edition No.58 - January & February 2021 “Information is for sharing and not gathering dust” Page 43 of 56

Some issues back of Coupe News, there was a most informative article on the various 00 gauge models of Pullman Cars, which for a modeller like myself, was pure gold - my sincere thanks to the author. Over the last few months, I've become very poorly and have had time as I've gained a little energy, to pick up a few projects I started quite a while back, one of which is a fictitious Tri-Ang Pullman DMU, using the old 1960's Pullman brake CAR No. 79 and three of the Parlour first cars, formally RUTH, JANE and MARY. ©Jon Horsman. Whilst I realise this is not exactly "pure" Pullman, we all need a little cheering up through these testing times, so may I share a couple or so images of my creation from some scrap Tri-ang Pullman coaches to create a "Neva-Wozza" diesel electric Pullman Multiple Unit, similar in idea to the Brighton Belle, utilizing some old Modern Traction Kits class 104 driving cab ends and salvaged Tri-ang DMU parts. ©Clive Hanley. MAIL BAG. From: R. Townshend. Subject: Pullman Car Services-Archive - Annual Publications. I just wanted to take the time to thank you especially and everyone who put all this information and photographs together. Many articles bringing back memories of various vehicles seen and places where I have had the pleasure of watching certain trains passing. The fascination of dining in style on a train has always been a love of mine and tried to capture that on my own dining train company in the past (Elegant Excursions) as you know. My closest association of working on a Blue Pullman of course was the loco hauled version about 15 years ago for its duration, as the train technician manager. Thank you again Terry, I look forward to receiving your publications during 2021. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: R. AJECTA Exhibition Singapore - Ettore Redaelli. AJECTA has made the Pullman car VP4155, the CIWL F1270 van and the 130B348 locomotive available for an exhibition in Singapore. After many delays related to the international health situation, a first departure of the car and the van could be carried out between October 16th and 21st. VP4155 and F1270 were transported by rail and by FRET SNCF to Lechelle then, after packaging, by truck to Bray. Seine for boarding in barges to Antwerp. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Further information as sourced from the inter-net. Posted on December 1st, 2020 - La Dépéche.fr. Despite the pandemic, the Orient Express arrived in Singapore for display. The locomotive and two cars of the Orient Express crossed the seas for display in Singapore from December 12th. Despite the upheavals due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the locomotive and two wagons of the Orient Express have crossed the seas to be exhibited in Singapore: an acrobatic operation on private funding to exhibit in Asia a mythical heritage of old Europe. Delayed by the virus, the expedition designed by the Arab World Institute (IMA) got the better of the initial obstacles and doubts: locomotive and wagons, listed as historical monuments, arrived overnight from Monday November 30th to Tuesday December 1st in the huge port of Singapore. 250 tonnes in total aboard a boat, the Tigre, which left Antwerp for the Mediterranean, the Suez Canal, the Sea Red and the Indian Ocean. In 2014, the former Minister of Culture Jack Lang and president of the IMA had organized with the SNCF "Once upon a time the Orient Express ", an exhibition which recounted the epic of the luxury train which linked Paris to Istanbul from 1883 and which served from sets to several books or films, including "Le crime de l'Orient Express" by Agatha Christie. This exhibition, at the IMA, had attracted 300,000 visitors. SNCF and Accor then created a joint subsidiary, Orient Express, which keeps and rents parts of the train legendary. The Singapore exhibition, an extension of the 2014 exhibition in France, was due to start in May but will not open until December 12th, because of the upheavals caused by the pandemic. It was designed by the private company Visionairs In Art, in collaboration with Accor and IMA. "More than the Obelisk moved under Louis-Philippe from Egypt, it is the heaviest set of monuments historical records never moved over a distance of more than 12,000 km ", adds Claude Mollard, commissioner of this exposure. PULLMAN - Edition No.58 - January & February 2021 “Information is for sharing and not gathering dust” Page 52 of 56
"The project is based solely on private funding, apart from subsidies from the Ministry of Tourism of Singapore, ”he adds. The owners of the loaned objects, mainly French, "were reluctant to make them travel so far", "it took them convince ", says Claude Mollard. As for investors," they should recoup their costs "thanks to the ticket office and derivative products. The furniture and display cases arrived at their destination, by sea, in April. Many objects and documents have been restored and it was especially necessary to ensure to protect them from the equatorial climate. The cars had been restored before their departure, in the railway museum in Longueville. (Seine-et-Marne), managed by an association of railway heritage enthusiasts. For its transport to the port of Antwerp, the two wagons left on October 23rd on a double barge on the Seine, which joined the Oise at Conflans-Saint-Honorine then the Canal du Nord. The locomotive left by truck. In Singapore, a 2,000 m³ building, built in the style of the North Station, was built on "Gardens By The Bay", huge botanical garden very busy. The air conditioning will protect the works from 100% ambient humidity. In addition to the wagons brought from France, a restaurant wagon will be reconstituted in Singapore, where visitors will be able to taste dishes made by chef Yannick Aleno. Thousands of reservations have already been made, according to Claude Mollard. After, he told AFP, the exhibition will travel to China, Venice and possibly the Saudi site of Alula, a trip from several years.
