WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANT My name is Mrs. Nicole Bourne, and I am very excited to be joining the SJV staff as the School Development Assistant. We currently have a 1st grader at SJV and will have a child in K3 next fall. We love our school, and I am looking forward to serving our community in this new capacity. I attended Marquette University where I received a degree in Theology and Philosophy. I worked as the Director of Christian Formation at St. Catherine of Alexandria in Milwaukee, and as the Youth Minister at St. William in Waukesha before our oldest child was born. The last 7 years I have been away from professional ministry (primarily as a stay-at-home mom and teaching group fitness classes). My family has been a part of St. John Vianney for over 20 years and returning to work for the Church within our Catholic school feels like coming home. I have a passion for connecting with others where they are at in life, and I cannot wait to see everyone’s smiling faces in the school office and around campus. I’m looking forward to joining the amazing team of teachers and staff at SJV to continue to strengthen and grow our school community.
6 | 5TH SUNDAY OF EASTER | MAY 2, 2021 WHAT’S THIS? Instructions on Receiving Holy Communion with Proper Reverence For many of us over this past fourteen months, the absence of being able to receive our Lord’s Precious Body & Blood has been devastating. Is it possible, that we may have forgotten what to do? The next two weeks will provide the proper reverence for receiving the Eucharist. Please be mindful of whom you are receiving. If One Receives on the Hand Unless arthritis hinders one, hold your top hand flat, and do not move until the Priest or Eucharistic Minister has placed the Sacred Host on your hand and removed his. Do not move your hand, arms, fingers, etc. Never receive Holy Communion in the hand when your hands are impeded; e.g., carrying a cane or some other walking-assistance device, carrying a child in your arms, carrying a purse, have a tissue or handkerchief in your hand, have a cast on your hand, etc. Never receive Holy Communion by extending only one hand. Never reach for or grab the Host. If One Receives on the Tongue Open your mouth wide, stick out your tongue, and hold still. Please do not move your neck, head, tongue, mouth or body. Hold still, and do not move until the Priest has placed the Host on your tongue and removed his hand, otherwise you may get the Host on the nose, on the teeth, or who knows where. Please do not lick the Priest’s hand—just hold still and all will be well! Children Make sure you hold your hands up high so the Priest or Eucharistic Minister can reach your hands. Parents, please instruct your children accordingly. https://d2y1pz2y630308.cloudfront.net/5143/documents/2014/2/Holy%20Communion%20Instructions.pdf PLEASE PRAY FOR THESE MEMBERS OF OUR PARISH COMMUNITY: Scott Schmaelzle Kendall Roehling Sue O’Brien Jane Molter Shirley Sciacca Scott Lynch Celwynne Conell Tom Dutton Elizabeth Chloe Roehling Kathy Bell Kretschmer Patricia (Pat) Bev Schnier Dan Kretschmer Gutschenritter Lucy Bartnicki Edie Tomsyck Robert Hromadka Sara-Rae Remmel Tom Kwak Jim Humphriss LeRoy Schmidt Jackie Harty Donald Pekel Ken Basile Shirley Dorsey Mary Jane Doney Jean Siegfried
ST. JOHN VIANNEY| BROOKFIELD, WI | 7 CALLED TO A GENEROUS LOVE STEWARDSHIP OFFERTORY St. John opens his salutation in our second Revenue Summary reading from his first letter saying, “Let us not love in word or speech, but in deed Budget for Fiscal Year End and truth.” In many ways that sums up June 30, 2021 accurately the messages we receive in Holy Scripture on this Fifth Sunday of $2,037,000 Easter. Often we hear the adage “Actions speak louder than words.” Truly in terms of Budget for 7/1/2020-4/24/2021 stewardship what we do is much more $1,702,950 important than what we might say. Throughout this Easter season many of our first readings Actual for 7/1/2020-4/24/2021 are from the Acts of the Apostles, a recounting of the $1,755,830 early Church and its development. That early Church would not have survived and thrived without a strong sense of stewardship. Today’s first reading recounts the challenges Saul (St. Paul) had with the disciples in Jerusalem. Paul was not readily accepted, perhaps because they remembered what he had once done in *Our current budget has a persecuting them, or they were just at a time when trust deficit of $329,000 of others was not high. In any case, note how Barnabas both accepts and introduces Paul to others as one of them. This is a lesson for us in how we treat others. It has a lot to do with the idea of hospitality, which is central to BUNDLE SUNDAY WEEKEND IS BACK, a stewardship parish. Barnabas loves and befriends, just MAY 15/16 as we are to do. 8 | 5TH SUNDAY OF EASTER | MAY 2, 2021 MY SJV FAMILY People in the Gilbert Family: Matt, Colleen, Tiernan (7), Shane (5), Deirdre (3) My family loves being a part of SJV because: of the community. We are blessed by the faithful friends we've made and the opportunities for our whole family to learn and grow. You may see our family around SJV in the following volunteer roles/areas: Colleen serves on the School Committee and Matt serves on the Building and Grounds Committee. We also love to help with various events and initiatives with SJV Parish and School such as Catholic Schools week, Cub Scouts and the Rosary small group. My family joined the SJV community in 2016 when we moved to Brookfield from Chicago. One of our kids’ favorite religious books is Lily Lolek: Future Saint. COVID CRISIS IN PERU Fr. Joe Uhen, the pastor of our sister parish Santisimo Sacramento in Piura, sends his heartfelt thanks and immense gratitude to the many SJV parishioners and supporters for their incredible financial support this past year for the Family to Family program, Trade School scholarships, needed medical supplies and so much more. Your donations have helped feed people and provide much needed medicine and oxygen during the pandemic. Unfortunately, the situation in Piura and Peru is not improving but has again hit another surge of record Covid cases and deaths. Only 2.5% of Peruvians have received at least one dose of a vaccine from China—basically none in Piura. Under- equipped hospitals are struggling and critically lacking supplies, while infection rates are up because of the P1 variant from Brazil. Patients are dying in the hospitals because of their lack of oxygen supplies. Our families must pay $200-$500 U.S. to get medicine to treat their family members at home because there are no beds at the limited hospitals in the area. They need to take out loans to pay for medicine. Fr. Joe has used donations to secure oxygen tanks and supplies that his medical staff checks out to the 50-100 people per day who come to Santisimo Sacramento looking for help to treat their families. Recently some Santisimo staff or their family members have had Covid with some deaths of family members. Fr. Joe, who is not vaccinated, continues to visit families every day attending to their spiritual needs. His parish and medical staff visit families in their homes, the clinic and at the parish assisting them with their medical and other needs. Fr. Joe will not be coming to SJV in September nor will a mission group be going to Peru in January 2022. While we feel helpless in not being with our brothers and sisters at Santisimo Sacramento, your prayers are greatly appreciated and much needed during this time of dire circumstances. Financial support is always welcomed by Fr. Joe to help him continue to serve all those who come to the parish asking for help. Donations can be made via check to SJV or online via the parish website. Let's keep together in prayer so we can continue doing wonderful things for the good of those who need it most. Any questions, contact Julie Beres at jberes3@wi.rr.com.
