All Leicestershire libraries Summer Reading Challenge 2019 – Space Chase! There will be lots to explore at your local library this summer! Space Chase is an out-of-this-world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Children can join in the fun by reading or listening to six library books or e-books throughout the summer and will be able to collect six special stickers - including some smelly ones - for their colourful collector’s folder. Participants will also be rewarded with a special incentive as they read their books and a certificate and medal when they complete the challenge. Free for children four to 12 years old. Sun 7 - Soap Box Derby Castle Street, Hinckley Hinckley BID’s 10th annual Soap Box Derby. This is a tremendously fun, family day for the teams and spectators alike. Comprising both a jump and a chicane, it is the driver's choice, as they steam down the 200m Castle Street hill cheered on by the crowds. Build a soap box and compete, raise money for charity. As part of their Then, Now & Forever Partnership, LCFC staff will be at the theatre in the morning with their community-based workshop ‘Well Being Through Reminiscence’. A guided walking tour of the Atkins Building, Hinckley and District Museum and the Great Meeting Unitarian Chapel, where visitors can learn about these Grade listed buildings and the famous Atkins hosiery family that connects them. Tour starts at Hinckley and District Museum, Lower Bond Street, Hinckley where Phillip Lindley will highlight the connection between the cottages and the Atkins Family. The tour then moves to the Atkins Building where Business Centre Principal Officer Rebecca Wilbur will be guiding visitors round and focusing on the family's industrial past. The final part takes place in the Great Meeting Chapel with Hugh Beavin, who will explore the reasons why the Atkins Family chose the Chapel as their place of worship. Ada is considered to be one of the first computer programmers following her work with Charles Babbage's Difference Engine, which is a calculating machine which required a written program to carry out complex calculations. Wicked Wednesdays during August will include activity and themed events and will commence from 10am. All the usual centre activities for youth sessions and more including: arts and crafts, bingo, cooking, wall climbing, sports, gaming, skate park, BMX, dance and fitness for 8 to 19 year olds. Join us for a series of talks on various subjects including history and local nostalgia. Tickets must be pre-booked and include refreshments in the price. Toddler Tea Mornings with the Family Learning Team Tuesday 18 and 25 June and Tuesday 2 and 9 July, 11:15am to 12:30pm. Come and join the Family Learning Team and do something creative with your child/children. There will be free drinks & snacks, free activities, giveaways, fun and laughter. Guided Walks at Bosworth Battlefield These take place on Saturdays and Sundays throughout most of the year. Join an experienced guide for an informative 2 km guided walk exploring the Battle of Bosworth, the death of King Richard III and the unlikely victory of Henry Tudor. Regular walks take place from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 3:30pm. Cost: Adult £4.50, concession £4, child £3. Family tickets also available.
