FROM FATHER JOE 2 LENTEN RETREAT DAY L ast weekend parishioners met Father John Marcucci when he presided at the 9:00 AM Mass at Sacred Heart Church and the 11:00 AM Mass at Saint Raphael Church. Throughout the afternoon, Father Marcucci led the members of our Pastoral Council, Finance Councils and Pastoral Staff during a Lenten Day of Retreat. Father John is known throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh as one of the best teachers and preachers, especially with his background in Scripture and Church Theology. Father John studied under Father Ray Brown who was perhaps the greatest Scripture scholar in the United States. The theme of the retreat day was “CALLED TO A SHARED LEADERSHIP”. Relying on Scripture and the Dogmatic Constitutions of the Second Vatican Council, Father John provided all of our parish leaders with an in-depth understanding of what it means to lead in the Church today by mutually rooting ourselves in the Baptismal Call to Service and a Ministry of Shared Leadership. All of our pastoral leaders from the advisory councils and pastoral staff who were able to be at the retreat par- ticipated in a re- commitment service dedicating our shared ministry and leadership to fostering unity in our Grouping as well moving closer to becoming one parish with a new name in January. We will still have two church buildings but we will share resources and ministry. Father John inspired each of our wonderful leaders to consider that their work to unite our two parishes may be exactly what each one of them was created to accomplish at this moment in time. We firmly believe Father John helped everyone last Sunday at the retreat in a spiritual way that will bear much fruit by the way that everything from here on in will develop and deepen the unity of Sacred Heart and Saint Raphael Parishes. Father used the partnership between Saint Luke and Saint Paul on Mission together as an example for our parishes to model as we advance to become one, vibrant parish on January. The Rite of Election This Sunday March 15 at St Paul Cathedral, hundreds of people seeking to share in the Sacraments of Initia- tion - Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist - will gather for the Rite of Election and the Call to Contin- uing Conversion. The Rite of Election pertains to the catechumens. Over the last several months these individ- uals have been instructed in the faith and have undergone a conversion in mind and action. Now it is time for them to be recognized as those “who are to be chosen in Christ.” This is such an important marker in the jour- ney to full membership in the Church that the bishop presides at the service at the cathedral. With the recom- mendation of priests, deacons, catechists and godparents who have been involved in their preparation, the cat- echumens state of formation is deemed adequate to proceed to the next phase of preparation - Purification and Enlightenment. The bishop accepts the recommendation regarding their readiness for Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. The bishop then “chooses” or “elects” these catechumens for the Sacraments of Initia- tion. Each catechumen, accompanied by their godparent will inscribe their name in the “Book of the Elect” which will be opened on the altar. They will no be longer be called “catechumens,” but instead will be called “elect” since they will be “chosen” to share in the Sacraments. Rite of Sending to the Cathedral Our parish grouping will send the following persons to the cathedral for the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion. The Rite of Sending will take place at St Raphael at the 11:00 am Mass on March 15. After the homily, each catechumen Ann & John Wilson Max Grandelis Kim Witkowski will be called forward by name. Their godparents testify to their readiness to receive Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. The community of faith affirms their readiness. Next, baptized candidates are presented and recog- nized along with their sponsors. They desire to be full members of the Catholic Church. After special interces- sions for the catechumens and candidates, they receive a blessing.

Father Ben is one of the most beloved priests in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. He served as pastor of Saint Raphael’s from March 2004 to August 2010. Currently Father Ben serves as Judicial Vicar overseeing the Diocesan Office of the Tribunal. A Judicial Vicar is an officer of the diocese who has ordinary power to judge cases in the diocesan ecclesiastical court. Other judges, who may be priests, deacons, religious brothers, sisters or nuns, or laypersons, and who must have knowledge of canon law and be Catholics in good standing, assist the judicial vicar either by deciding cases on a single-judge basis or by forming a panel with him over which he or one of them presides. Father Ben is known for his fairness in every case, weighing the canonical principles but balancing the law with practical, pastoral sensitivity. Everyone knows Father Ben is foremost and above everything else a caring, compassionate and un- derstanding parish priest. He is looked up to as a good role model and is often asked for his opinion or advice by other priests about pastoral matters. Parishioners know Father Ben is approachable and friendly, a priest people are never afraid to go to. Welcome, Father Ben! Thanks for being with us. PUTTING on the LIKENESS of CHRIST Takes place this coming Thursday evening, March 19, in the Sacred Heart Auditorium at 7:00PM God became like us, so that we could become like Him. -- St. Ireanaeus Yes, it is possible to become like Christ! Mother Teresa is among those saints who encourage us to do so : “May we each grow into the likeness of Christ through our love for each other.” Join counselor/spiritual guide Eileen Colianni this Thursday evening as she describes very concretely what it takes to become like Christ. She’ll also share the good news that you already have all you need inside you to do so! “As we know Jesus better, his Divine power gives us all we need for a godly life. He has called us to receive his own glory and goodness – to share in His Divine nature.” 2 Peter1: 3-4 Don’t miss this unique opportunity to make Lent 2020 a transformative one for you!
HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING 4 Everything You Need to Know about the Sacred Triduum Holy Week is the most solemn and glorious week in Christianity, the pinnacle of the liturgical year. It's more sacred than Christmas! This is because Holy Week commemorates the final week of Our Lord's life, the very purpose for which Christmas happened. THE SACRED TRIDUUM Sundown on Holy Thursday to sundown on Easter Sunday is considered the most solemn part of the liturgical year. This three-day period is referred to as the Easter Triduum, also known as the Sacred Triduum, or Paschal Triduum. Basically, the Sacred Triduum is one great festival recounting the last three days of Jesus' life on earth, the events of his Passion and Resurrection, when the Lamb of God laid down his life in atonement for our sins. "Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ's Paschal Mystery" (USCCB). The Paschal Mystery is, therefore, God's plan of redemption for the fallen human race through the Passion, death, and resurrection of God-man, Jesus Christ. It is one marvelous event stretched out over three days. (excerpts from Gretchen Filz, April 16, 2019) ATTEND DAILY MASS DURING LENT Everyone in our Grouping should be happy to know that many people are coming to daily Mass here during Lent. There isn’t any more beautiful gift to Our Blessed Lord than to join Him at the Eucharistic Altar each day. Please remember we have added an early morning Mass each weekday in Lent. Check the bulletin for the schedule of the 7:00 AM Mass. 5 Reason to Attend Daily Mass (excerpts from Robert Barbry II, August 26, 2015) 1. 30 Minutes of Peace Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent or a 9-to-5er, a college student or a retired veteran, no matter your stage in life you could probably use an extra half hour each day to recharge. 2. Moves the Focus AWAY from Ourselves Our busy schedules, our bills, our lives are always overrun with our problems. Going to Mass, and making it a daily habit, causes us to focus on something else for one half hour. 3. Making an Act of Faith Things may not be where they should be yet, but God is faithful and going to Daily Mass al- lowed me to see that more clearly. 4. Dedicated Time for Prayer More people actually avoid prayer altogether because they don’t believe it actually works. Daily Mass gives us ample opportunity to restructure our prayer life. 5. Jesus This one is obvious. In fact, this reason is infinitely more important than the previous four. If you, for no other reason, choose to go to Daily Mass let it be for the genuine encounter with Jesus.

Fast from bitterness; Feast on forgiveness. Fast from self-concern; Feast on compassion for others. Fast from personal anxiety; Feast on eternal truth. Fast from discouragements; Feast on hope. 7 HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING Saint Patrick’s Day Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to everyone in our parishes of Irish descent. Of course, everyone is Irish on Saint Patrick’s Day. As Catholics, most of us owe a great part of our strong faith to many of our priests, sisters, teachers and catechists who were Irish. The best in the Church in the United States is due largely to the foundations that were laid by many of the Irish immigrants. Their firm faith in Christ and loyalty to the Church blazed the way for so many other ethnic groups. The Irish suffered heavily from the discrimination and prejudice of people who disliked our religion even without really knowing what we believed. The Irish held on courageously. It was their convic- tions that paved the way to make it just a little easier for other waves of Catholics who would follow. We pray that everyone has fun on Saint Patrick’s Day. And we thank the Irish for their sense of humor, friendliness, refinement, honesty and enthusiasm! Have a great day! Fr. Joe O’Mele Who is Saint Patrick? St. Patrick is one of the world’s most popular saints. Patrick, a Romano-British, was born in 387. Enslaved as a young teen by pagans and Druids, he turned to God while in captivity. He escape at age 20, after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britain and was reunited with his family and began studying for the priesthood. He was or- dained by the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years, and was later ordained a bishop and sent to take the Gospel to Ireland. Patrick arrived in Slane, Ireland on March 25, 433. He preached throughout Ireland converting many for 40 years. Legend credits Patrick with teaching the Irish about the doctrine of the Holy Trinity by showing people the shamrock. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died at Saul, on March 17, 461, where he had built the first Irish church. Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in God should be a shining example to each of us. So com- plete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission, he feared nothing - not even death. He is the patron saint of Ireland and his feast day is on March 17. Who is Saint Joseph? Saint Joseph was a carpenter, a working man, but above all a humble and a compassionate, caring man. When he discovered that Mary was pregnant, he resolved to send her away quietly to not expose her to shame or cru- elty. However, when an angel came to Joseph in a dream and told him, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife..." he did as the angel told him and took Mary as his wife. (Matthew 1:19-25). And when the angel came again to tell him that his family was in danger, he immediately fled to a strange country with his young wife and the baby. He waited in Egypt without question until the angel told him it was safe to go back (Matthew 2:13-23). Saint Joseph is regarded as the patron saint of workers and is associated with var- ious feast days. Pope Pius IX declared him to be both the patron and the protector of the Universal Church, in addition to his patronages of the sick and of a happy death, due to the belief that he died in the presence of Jesus and Mary. In popular piety, Joseph is regarded as a model for fathers and has also become patron of var- ious counties, dioceses and places. We celebrate his feast day on March 19. Saint Joseph’s Day Father Joe and our priests will host the Josephs (and Josephine) from our grouping’s school at a special luncheon in the rectory dining room in honor of Saint Joseph. The students will be accompanied by facul- ty members and will receive a small memento of the special occasion. Many Catholic homes decorate with a Saint Joseph Table to entertain guests throughout the day. Happy Name Day to all our “Joes”!
HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING 8 BAZAAR 2020 If you're interested in helping to plan the 2020 parish bazaar, please indicate your interest at https://tinyurl.com/ParishBazaar2020, or contact Ed LoPresti (edlopresti@earthlink.net, 412-781-3048), or just stop by our next planning meeting, Monday March 23 at 7 pm in the Holy Angels conference room at St. Raphael's. eGiving with Faith Direct This month we are introducing to our Sacred Heart family, and re-introducing to our Saint Raphael family, a new and exciting way to contribute to our parish offertory and diocesan collections - Faith Direct. Faith Direct enables parish- ioners to make offertory contributions through either direct debit from your checking/savings account or through credit/debit card. Just think - no more writing checks or searching for envelopes on the way out the door to Mass! Now you can apply the convenience of direct debit to our parish offerings in much the same way as you may now use it to make your mortgage, utilities, car or tuition payments. Please consider taking advantage of this new opportunity. You will be receiving more information in your U.S. mail and/or via e-mail in the next couple weeks. You may also get a preview of the options and even en- roll by visiting faith.direct/PA1027 (for Sacred Heart parishioners) or faith.direct/PA723 (for Saint Raphael parishioners). We hope that you will find this a convenient way to support our parishes! As you would probably assume, currently, each of our parishes has its own bank account in which it manages the $10 contributions that individuals make to the priests for mass intentions. However, in our continuing ef- forts to prepare for the merging of our two parishes into one, and in keeping with Diocesan directives, we have begun the process of combining the two separate stipend accounts. In this effort we ask that, effective immediately, if you are paying mass stipends by check, please make the check payable to MASS STIPEND ACCOUNT. Also, we remind you to not include any other payments (such as for sanctuary candles) or donations when writing a check for stipends. Other than the endorsement on the back of the check that you can see after the check is cashed, you will not notice any other change. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation and assistance in this matter. You Can Still Win - Cash Bash Drawings-Only Tickets on Sale! Even if you can’t attend the Sacred Heart Cash Bash on April 17th, you can still win BIG and support Sacred Heart. There will be a total payout of $3,000 and you don’t need to be present to win. Tickets to enter the drawings can be found at www.sacredheartpgh.org/cashbash. Thank you for supporting our school! From SHES: Physical Education with Kindergarten Learning how to use a parachute in Physical Education class can be one of the most excit- ing experiences a child can have. Cooperation is needed, regardless of skill or strength, throughout the various activities. The students learn the different hand grips they can use, how to make waves with the parachute and the starting position to form the Mushroom and the Sit-In-Dome. When the children work together they learn to develop simple rou- tines while incorporating all the basic locomotor skills. The students move in different directions and levels, exchanging positions and discovering what it feels like to be underneath the parachute. Laughter is prevalent especially when the students shake and flip a rubber chicken on the parachute! Bagels with the Bunny Join Sacred Heart Elementary School on Saturday, April 4th from 10am-12pm for the 1st annual Bagels with the Bunny! Come and enjoy pictures with the Easter Bunny, children's activities, an egg hunt, and some yummy bagels and donuts! Tickets are $5 per person and children under three come free! Visit www.sacredheartpgh.org/easterbunny for tickets.
9 HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING March 10, 2020 Dear parishioners of our East Region, Blessings to you and your families during our preparation for Easter. The Catholic Schools Regionalization initiative in the Diocese Pittsburgh is entering an essential phase, and the themes of Lent take on special meaning for all of us as we work to come together in exciting new ways to support Catholic Education for our children. After much consultation and study with clergy and lay leaders, we are moving forward after the closing of two beloved schools in our region: St. Maria Goretti and East Catholic. Through this process, we have heard from parishioners throughout the region about the need for an update on the regionalization effort for our schools and our strategic plan moving forward. Bishop Zubik and our education support team at the Diocese of Pittsburgh are fully committed to working with us to create vibrant new school models that provide competitive learning opportunities for our children infused with the char- acter-building nature of our faith. Please continue to watch for letters like this that will contain helpful information as we journey together to build Catho- lic schools that light the way for our children and our faith communities! Right now is a good time to get reacquainted with the basics of a Regional Advisory Board, and get to know the people who make up the Pittsburgh-East Regional Advisory Board. What is a Regional Advisory Board? A Regional Advisory Board is made of up both clergy and lay members with a representative from each of the parish groupings in a specific region. The Board meets at a minimum of once a month with the mission of helping to develop a strategy for Catholic education in a region through analyzing critical factors about the school’s programs, financial, demographic information, and more. They appoint a Regional Administrator and Regional Business Manager to facili- tate the day-to-day operations for our kids. The Board also visits schools in the region which allows members to become more familiar with unique school envi- ronments and to better understand the strengths and challenges of each school. The Regional Advisory Board is responsible for offering recommendations to the Member Board which includes dioce- san officials regarding how to best structure the schools in the region for success to help ensure the future viability of Catholic education. Meet Your Advisory Board Here in the East Region, we are blessed to have the following people on our Advisory Board. These people are volun- teering their time to serve in this important way: • Rev. Thank you for your understanding! BLESSING OF THE EASTER BASKET For many families (especially those of Eastern European origin), it is a tradition to have a basket of food blessed on Holy Saturday. The food items in the Easter basket have special significance. Each family may have its own traditions, but there are some prac- tices that are universal. A typical Eastern European basket would include a variety of symbolic foods, and there are special bless- ings for the meat, eggs, cake, and bread. The blessing of the food is a festive occasion. People take special pride in preparing a dec- orative basket with crisp linens, covering the food which symbolizes the covering of Christ’s burial shroud. The Blessing of the Easter Basket will be in Sacred Heart and in Saint Raphael at 12:00PM(noon) on Holy Saturday, April 11, 2020. Christmas Flowers Memorials We apologize for the delay in printing the memorial with names of donors and prayers “in memory of” and “in honor of” loved ones for Sacred Heart Church. The Memorial will be located in the back of Sacred Heart Church. Saint Raphael’s list was already put in the back of Saint Raphael’s Church last January.
