From the Pastor _________________________________ Rev. Michael Bush I Want to be Like . . . .? I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. Jesus in John 14:12 In 1992, Gatorade launched an advertising campaign with the slogan, “I want to be like Mike!” The commercials showed images of basketball great Michael Jordan doing what he did so well on the court. The message: Gatorade consumption could help us be more like Michael Jordan. Even so, I suspect most people did not expect that Gatorade (or anything else) would transform them into NBA-worthy basketball players. Is there anyone you want to be like? Do you believe that you can be like Jesus? Most people do not likely immediately say or think “yes!” If someone says “I am like Jesus,” we tend to think that the person has delusions of grandeur. Yet the Gospel of John reading from the last Sunday in January, which calls Jesus the son of God, indicates that Jesus came into our world that we would all have the power to be the children of God. Jesus says that those who follow in his way will do what he does and even more. The apostle Paul says that we can put on the mind of Christ and that we can live as the Body of Christ in the world. I have heard people in every church I have served affirm in various ways the greatness of Jesus and hear that Jesus calls us to live in ways like him, but then they will say, “Of course, we cannot really do that because we are not Jesus.” But Jesus believed that by God’s power, God’s Spirit, his first disciples could live and love like he did. And he prayed that we latter day disciples could live this Way as well. We are on a journey together to be like Jesus. He shows us the way to live in love, justice, healing, and hope. Come and see! Pastor Michael Bush From the Council Moderator _______________________________________________________________________________ Tom Goslin 2020 in 2020 I’m sure all of you have heard the folk lore which states “hindsight is always 2020”. Of course, that thought is suggesting that history can help us to better understand our past and therefore should help us hopefully to make better choices in the present and future. I’m confident that all of you have experienced this phenomenon to some degree in your lives and will continue to practice this behavior in some manner. However, as Christians, we have the greatest life resource for a much fuller life through our God and his Word! Daily prayer, bible study at home and with a group and attending our church services and activities, we are able to grow and live the life God has specifically planned for us. I was blessed to have been brought up in a Christian home. But as I got older and went off to college, got married, joined military and had children I wandered away from my spiritual roots. Certain events would bring me back toward my spiritual leanings from time to time but not to the extent that I had a daily walk with our Lord. As the challenges of secular life multiplied to a point where I was seriously beginning to doubt many of my life choices, our Lord sent a wonderful blessing my way. One day in October 2014, my wife, Faye, and I were driving on Oracle and she said in a rather nonchalant manner as we were passing Casas Continued Abodes Congregational Church, let’s go to that church on Sunday and I, nonchalantly, replied OK! 2 God is Still Speaking...
From the Family and Education Minister ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Rev. John Angiulo Many of us remember the pastel-colored candies called “conversation hearts” that are be given out on Valentine’s Day. Words like “Hi Cutie” and “Be Mine” are traded with friends as secret love messages on the playground. In his first letter to the church in Corinth, Paul included a not-so-secret message about love: “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” This verse has become so familiar that it is cliché. But Paul’s words are very powerful and succinct when it comes to prioritizing our spiritual lives. Though these words would be hard to print on a candy heart, they reveal the most important aspect of love. Love is the foundation of everything. If we move without love, life is hollow. I am not talking about romantic love (eros) or love of friends (philos), I am talking about a deep unconditional love for others (agape). Unconditional love includes love for one’s self, too. When we love ourselves and others unconditionally, we can engage deeply with our fellow human-beings. This allows us to grow as spiritual beings in the community of the Church. Without a base of love there can be no deep connection to God; no connection with our fellow human beings. This is why Paul puts love above faith and hope. Hatred, bullying, jealousy, and territorialism destroy lives, relationships and our very souls. So, as we move into a potentially contentious time of political rhetoric and social anxiety, don’t let your heart become a commodity for marketing. Instead, invest in a daily affirmation of agape love and compassion and make connections with other human beings. Engage with others within our community and outside our walls. Connect in new ways; maybe volunteer as a Keeling tutor, Sunday school helper, Sunday morning greeter, usher or coffee server. It is when we put ourselves out into the world, we can encounter the presence of Christ that lives in everybody. This is true selfless love. So, let your conversation heart for 2020 read “Where There’s Love, There‘s God” and make it an open message to the world. Peace, Pastor John Council Moderator continued ___________________________________________________________ Later that day I was trying to recall the last time she and I had gone to any church, but it had been so long that I couldn’t. We went and at the end of the service I didn’t hear a voice, but I knew for certain, as if I was hearing the Holy Spirit telling me, “this is your church, be here every Sunday”. My immediate thought was, “OK”. I don’t remember any emotion, it just felt natural and I knew we would be back the next Sunday! That was five years ago, and my life has changed forever!! Recalling the last paragraph in Jean-Marie Huisjen’s January “From the Council Vice President” suggestions, I have done and am participating in some of her spiritual suggestions — and they work!!! In Christ, Tom CACC-UCC Mission Statement Listening for the voice of our still-speaking God, we actively seek to make Jesus’ Message come alive in caring ways. Welcoming, Inclusive, Supportive and Engaged WISE is a program of the United Church of Christ which broadens the definition of being Open and Affirming (ONA) by being WISE - Welcoming, Inclusive, Supportive and Engaged with people who have Mental Illness. Becoming a WISE Congregation is a process similar to the ONA process which takes about two years and includes 10 different steps. WISE, along with the UCC Mental Health Network (MHN) were established as part of a General Synod Resolution in 2015. There are several people here at CACC-UCC who are interested in starting a conversation and researching about becoming a WISE Congregation. This is the initial step. Any decisions about becoming WISE would not take place until all of the research and steps are concluded. It would require a vote by the Congregation to become a WISE Congregation - after doing education and learning more about what it means to be WISE. We welcome you to join us for the initial conversation and research on becoming a WISE congregation. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Jean-Marie or Chris Sternberg as we plan our first meeting sometime in mid- to late February. Thank you! Memories of himself as a young man, tossed by fate onto a rickety train which was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. Jacob was there because his luck had run out, orphaned and penniless, he had no direction until he landed on this locomotive “ship of fools”. It was the early part of the Great Depression. Marlena, the star of the equestrian act, and Rosie the elephant were there because they were the great gray hope, the new act which was going to be the salvation of the circus. The bond which grew among this unlikely trio was their only hope for survival. Surprising, poignant, and funny, this book is so engrossing, one is reluctant to put it down. 8
