April 21, 2019 Easter Sunday Page Four EASTER FILLS US WITH HOPE The empty tomb and the neatly folded burial cloths point to us that Jesus is physically alive. His crucified body has been transformed. What lesson is he teaching us by keeping his wounds intact? We can answer this question by turning to our own wounds. What are our wounds? First, we all experience the large wound caused by original sin. And then there are the other wounds... We have wounds that are caused by sickness and the wounds that are caused by problems, adversities, challenges and the disappointments of life. All of us are wounded. By retaining the wounds of his passion, the glorified Jesus is showing us that we can find hope and strength by taking our wounds and uniting them to his wounds. The eleven apostles were discouraged and filled with fear. They had lost all hope. They did not understand that Jesus had to first die on the cross in order to rise on Easter Sunday. They did not understand that the risen Jesus would bear his five wounds as an eternal reminder that when our wounds are united to his wounds we will find true peace. "Peace be with you". These are the first words of the risen Jesus. He dispels the darkness of discouragement, despair and fear by showing the eleven his glorified and wounded body. Thomas places his finger in the wounds of Jesus and he believes. "Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe". (John 20: 27) Many call Thomas the doubting Thomas. All of the Apostles doubted. All of the Apostles ran away and abandoned Jesus. In reality, he is not the doubting Thomas, but the courageous Thomas. He is the only apostle who knows where to find Jesus. By touching the wounds of Jesus, he begins to understand that the risen Jesus is not a ghost, but that he is truly real. By encountering Jesus in his woundedness, he is able to encounter the authentic Jesus, the real Jesus, the whole Jesus. Thomas is able to encounter Jesus in all of his humanity and all of his divinity. He comes to grasp the reality that the risen Jesus is the same Jesus that died on Calvary. But, where is the risen and wounded Jesus? Where can we encounter him? As Jesus hung on the cross, all of his blood flowed from his wounds. The eternal reminder of his wounds reminds us that we are to experience him in the Eucharist and in the Sacrament of Confession. By coming to Jesus every day at Mass, for visits and adoration; by encountering the God of mercy through the awesome gift of the sacrament of forgiveness, we can dispel the despair, the discouragement and the fear that may fill our lives. It is in the Eucharist that we encounter peace because we truly encounter the Lord. We need to bring our wounds to the risen and wounded Jesus every day in the Eucharist. It is there, at the tabernacle, that his wounds will heal us.
Page Five Easter Sunday April 21, 2019 Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Ferdinand Parish! Once again we celebrate Easter which is a great source of spiritual renewal for each of us. The liturgy of Easter Sunday leads us to an empty tomb to personally meet the Resurrected Christ. There we proclaim our faith by repeating the words of St. Paul: „For we believe that Jesus died and rose again…(1 Tes 4,14) Dear Friends, may this Easter renew and deepen our faith which Christ has gained for us through his suffering, death and resurrection. May it guide us in the transformation of our lives and help us to reject fear and anxiety, darkness and despair. May it assist us in becoming the people of the Resurrection that gaze firmly at the Victorious Christ. From this empty tomb, flows a true promise that goes out to the faithful to empower us to help overcome evil, wrong doing, despair and sadness and one day share in the resurrection of Christ. Dear parishioners and friends visiting our parish during this Eastertime... Deep from my heart, I wish you that Easter hope which flows from the joy of encountering the Resurrected Christ fills our hearts with hope. It is having hope causes us to live differently. Let the Resurrected Christ give us strength and enlighten our hearts and minds the same way as he did to his apostles on their way to Emmaus. Then we may become His true witnesses in today’s contemporary world. May the peace and blessings of the Resurrected Christ be with you today and always! Fr. Jason Torba Pastor

April 21, 2019 Easter Sunday Page Eight REQUESTING A MASS INTENTION The Church considers the Mass the greatest possible prayer of intercession because it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the Paschal Mystery of His death and resurrection. Given this understanding, we can add some specifics. When a priest offers Holy Mass, he has three intentions: First, to offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of the Church. Second, to offer the Mass in union with the whole Church and for the good of the whole Church. Third, to offer the Mass for a particular intention. The faithful then make a free will offering, called a stipend, in order to apply the Mass to a specific intention. The Church believes that a Mass offered for a departed relative or friend may help hasten that final purification which he/she may still be undergoing in purgatory. No material gift can ever compare to or equal the Infinite Value of the Holy Mass. Masses may also be offered in thanksgiving for our blessings, family, health. Do not delay, then, to have Masses offered for yourself and your family, living and dead. Do not leave it to the uncertain future and to those who survive you. If you wish to have a Mass said for someone, please contact the Parish Office 773-622-5900 ex. 225. FEAST OF DIVINE MERCY Sunday, April 28, 2019 The Novena began on Good Friday and will con nue through Saturday following the Mass at 8:00am. On Sunday, April 28, the celebra on of Feast of Divine Mercy will start with 12:30pm Mass in English followed by the explosion of the Blessed Sacrament and will conclude with 3:00pm Mass in Polish Dear Fr. Jason and Parishioners of St. Ferdinand Parish, May the Risen Lord bless you abundantly and give you peace and joy during this season of Easter and throughout your lives. With great joy, we express our sincere gra tude to you all for your tremendous support of the works of the Missionaries of the Poor, around the world, especially in Kenya. Because of your help over the years, the sufferings of countless people are lessened and helped them to experience the joy of Easter in their lives. We thank you from the depths of our hearts. Thank you too for your hospitality in welcoming me when I visited you during the lent. Without people like you, the children we care for, would not have been where they are today. God bless you for all you do for his poorest in our world. Be assured of our prayers. In Christ, Fr. Paul Vilangappara MOP
April 21, 2019 Easter Sunday Page Nine Drodzy Parafianie i Dobrodzieje parafii Św. Ferdynanda! Drodzy, życzę Wam, aby przeżycie tych świąt przyczyniło się do ożywienia i pogłębienia wiary w żywą obecność Zmartwychwstałego Chrystusa w życiu każdego z Was. Niech zatem Zmartwychwstały Chrystus dodaje mocy i oświeca Wasze serca i umysły, jak uczniom w drodze do Emaus, abyście byli wiernymi Jego świadkami w dzisiejszym świecie. Pokój i łaska Zmartwychwstałego niech towarzyszy wszystkim Waszym codziennym poczynianiom. Ks.
