Leaves OF THE fall 2020 BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR As residents of the Fall Creek neighborhood we all want a place where our home values are maintained and a to be a place where folks around Houston and around the country would be interested in moving. With that in mind, here are a few reminders of the little things you can do to maintain your home values as well as mine and the entire community. CURB APPEAL Whether you are having your home valued for a new mortgage, selling it or just want it to look its best at all times, keep in mind that the first thing most people see is the front door and front yard. Spend some time creating an attractive entrance to the home that won’t take a lot of time to maintain. Keeping the yard mowed regularly helps a great deal. Your home’s value as well as your neighbors can be affected by an unkept lawn. Planting shrubs and flowers can also aid in giving your home that “I’d like to buy that one look”. FENCING Your fence is in an investment in both security and privacy. Keeping it maintained is your responsibility. Shared fences are the responsibility of both neighbors. Communicate with your neighbor and hopefully share the cost of the new fencing. Vehicle Parking For security and curb appeals, the best place to park vehicles is in your garage. If not possible then at least in the driveway, with doors locked and no valuables left in site. Pickup trucks should be parked with the tailgate to the garage door to help prevent tailgate theft. Vehicles parked in the street provide a traffic hazard and possibility of children darting out from behind parked vehicles into traffic. Commercial vehicles of all kinds are prohibited by HOA rules to parked in the neighborhood KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS Get to know your neighbors. Watch out for each other’s property. If you notice something say something! If suspicious activity occurs, report it to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office - Non-Emergency Number – (713) 221-6000 – Option 6. Chef Moses C. Cruz Shares a Delicious Holiday Recipe With Us BAKED APPLE WITH CARAMEL 6 medium baking apples * 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 tsp cinnamon 1/8 tsp grated nutmeg 1/3 cup dried cranberries (craisins or raisins) 3 Tbsp unsalted butter 1/4 cup walnuts finely chopped, optional 1 cup hot water Preheat oven to 375˚F. In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon and 1/8 tsp nutmeg and stir with a fork. Stir in 1/3 cup dried cranberries and set aside. Wash and core the apples using a melon baller, or small paring knife, leaving base intact to keep the filling in - don’t cut all the way through! Place apples in casserole dish just big enough to hold apples without touching. Divide the filling evenly between apples. Top each stuffed apple with 1/2 Tbsp butter, top with walnuts if using and sprinkle with any remaining cinnamon mixture. Pour 1 cup hot water into the casserole dish and bake at 375˚F for 15-20 minutes or until apples are soft (but not mushy). Baking time can vary by the type and size of apples you are using. Note: Apples should be firm, crisp and tart. Great apple options for this recipe include Rome Beauty, McIntosh, Jonagold, Fuji, Granny Smith, Golden Delicious or even Braeburn. Caramel Sauce 1 cup light brown sugar, packed 4 Tbsp unsalted butter * 1 tsp sea salt or to taste 1/2 cup half and half or use equal parts heavy cream and milk 1 Tbsp vanilla extract Combine all ingredients in a small/medium saucepan and simmer over low heat, whisking constantly or until thickened and no longer watery (10-14 min). Keep in mind it thickens more as it cools. Serve warm, at room temperature or chilled. Refrigerate in an airtight container up to 2 weeks. You can re-warm it slightly to make it more drizzle able. Christy Erb, Principal WINTER LAWN CARE TIPS As summer begins to wind down and we enter fall, there are a few practices we need to do to prepare our yards for the winter to come. Raise cut height- St. Augustine grass, which is what most homeowners have, should be cut no less than 4 inches. This is extremely important all year long but especially heading into winter as the grass needs as much leaf tissue to gather light and store energy. Pre-emergent- In September/October timeframe you need to make a pre-emergent herbicide application. Barricade or Dimension are the preferred herbicides and can be purchased at any nursery. Winterize fertilizer application- Sometimes this can be combined with the pre-emergent herbicide. If not you’ll want to do this around the same time as your pre-emergent. This will harden off your turf and give it the necessary nutrients to get through winter and come out strong in the Spring. A good nutrient analysis on the fertilizer bag would be a 8-0-16 or similar. Fungicide Application- Fungicide applications needs to be made in September and October for brown patch disease control. Hope this helps with everyone’s yards and prepares them for the harsh winter to come. -Brian Buckner, CGCS PG 6 | FALL 2020 FALL CREEK

Food Banks Food banks across the country are doing what they do best – feeding people in need within their communities. The Feeding America Network is the largest hunger-relief organization in the United States, including disasters and national emergencies. A donation goes even further than donating hard goods. Rather than paying retail prices, our network of food banks works with major manufacturers, retailers, and farmers to secure healthy food. This means that when you donate a dollar, you’re able to put more meals on the tables of families than if you donated food purchased at the store. A Huge Need For people already living paycheck-to-paycheck, COVID-19 makes life even more challenging. Many people in this situation are already making tough choices between food and bills, or food and medicine. When hours are cut or jobs are lost completely, as they have been recently, those choices become even more difficult. Often, families won’t have enough money to purchase a 14-day supply of food, or don’t have enough savings to cover bills if their income is compromised. For those people, and for everyone impacted in need of food, Feeding America’s food banks are responding every day, connecting those in need with healthy food.
