Since Mar, 2020, we have had to adjust to a new reality. Due to Covid 19, activities are happen- ing just in a different way, via Zoom or actually being together, outdoors and using physical dis- tancing protocol. So remember to email pictures, name of activity, original format, no cropping or enhancing neces- sary to landen.mj@gmail.com
Linda DeMento moved here from Pennsylvania, where she was involved in animal advocacy both professionally and as a volunteer for humane organizations. This is a passion she hopes to continue to pursue. When restrictions lift, Linda would love to travel and explore more of California and the western portion of the USA. She’s an art- ist, and especially loves photography and watercolor. And she’s adding pickleball to her Bucket List. Sue Glasser and her husband, Bill, retired to their new home on Stewart Way in Leucadia two years ago. As life-long New Englanders (Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey), they are happy to escape cold, snowy winters and enjoy beautiful sunshine (every day!!!) plus time with their West Coast family. Sue retired from a rewarding career as a physical therapist, rehabilitation hos- pital administrator, and consultant. She loves nature – especially the ocean – traveling, gardening, snorkeling, golf, long beach walks, and exploring local areas. She’s looking forward to meeting new friends through Newcom- ers. “Loving retirement, Loving Leucadia” Susan Jasin was born and raised in Wisconsin. She first moved to Encinitas in 1982 after 10 years in New Jersey and Philadelphia. Recently retired from a career as a psychologist and teacher, she is delighted to return to San Diego after sweltering in Florida for 8 years. She looks forward to enjoying bridge, Mexican train, outings, per- forming community service, and having new friends. Tater Tot, her 14 year old dachs- hund is also looking forward to their new life in Rancho Santa Fe. Susan has ex- pressed interest in beach walks, book clubs, movies and lunches, and is interested in organizing a group of Bridge players. Lisa Risser was born and reared in the Philadelphia area. She moved to San Diego 37 years ago, settling on E. Solana Circle in Solana Beach. Her wife, Leslie, and Lisa have been together for 27 years, and like many activities— swimming, cycling, gardening, the beach and travel—plus the other fun side of life: good food and wine! Apart from working with the IRS, one of the more dan- gerous and dramatic things Lisa’s done is to ride in a Breezy along the San Die- go coastline. What’s a Breezy? A no cockpit, sides or top high wing aircraft de- signed to seat the pilot and 1 passenger. It’s designed to allow a maximum un- obstructed view. (Think of a flying lawnmower.) Lisa recently retired, so she is looking forward to meeting our members, making new friends, and enjoying our fun activities. Kathleen Rooney is a long-time, VERY grateful resident of Cardiff by the Sea. Her career of 32 years in hospitality textiles abruptly ended with COVID-19, and she found herself with extra time on her hands to see San Diego with a different set of eyes. Linen/Textiles is a niche industry, and Kathleen enjoyed it very much. Once the COVID crisis has ended, it remains to be seen if there will be a similar opportuni- ty for her. While at home on Summit Avenue for most of 2020, Kathleen has enjoyed striking much off her “honey-do” list, walking her rescue dog, Cassie, and getting en- tirely too familiar with Netflix!! She’s looking forward to getting out and about once again.

May President’s Message It is May already and summer is fast approaching, but what a differ- ence a year makes. It seemed like 2020 would never end and we’d never see a normal day again. But here we are, almost half way into 2021, and there is hope in the air. While trying not to be overly opti- mistic, I am counting on getting back to life as we knew it before this pandemic drastically altered our lives. I know since being vaccinated I am feeling somewhat liberated. It may take the rest of this year to get to herd immunity but hopefully, we are well on our way. Our club has so many new members who have yet to experience all the get- togethers, lunches, and activities that make this club so special. My hope for them is that they get to enjoy all those things soon. While we usually scale down for the summer, perhaps this year we can ramp up a bit so we can all stay involved. The enthusiasm of the boogie boarders could be the impetus we need to make this hap- pen. So here’s a shout-out to 2021, the year we hope brings us to- gether in ways not recently possible, and the beginning of the end to covid 19 and virtual get-togethers! Elaine

Cinema Socializing has been on pause since COVID hit, but we will meet on Zoom on May 8 (the second Saturday, 4:00 social, 4:30-5:30 discussion. The movie for the May meeting will be The Trial of the Chicago 7. As in the past, everyone sees the move on their own in advance of the meeting. From Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus: An actors' showcase enlivened by its topical fact-based story, The Trial of the Chicago 7 plays squarely -- and compellingly -- to Aaron Sorkin's strengths. This movie is rated 89% by critics and 91% by audiences. In addition, many (make that most) of us are old enough to remember the trial. Community Service: Carol’s House Carol’s House, in Encinitas, helps women escaping domestic violence, providing housing and support. In addition to short term beds there are four apartments for ex- tended stays. They have beds, a table and chairs and other large furniture pieces, but not much else. For some time, our club has taken on the responsibility of supplying kitchen items, bed linens and bathroom essentials, setting up a welcoming home for each new family. When they leave, they take these items with them. We have not been called out in 2021 so far, but we are ready with donated items stored in our garages and a good list of members who are willing to come help when needed. Thank you! MariKennard@gmail.com (925) 200-0024 Pfitchen@gmail.com (831) 295-3514 Community Service: Book Depository Judy.cours@gmail.com Julie.aldrich05@gmail.com Do you (or your grandchildren) have books that you no longer use?? Our supply is dwindling!! Last year our club collected several gently-used and well loved children’s books, which were donated to Carol’s House and to Solutions for Change, either as gifts to boys and girls, for beginning libraries, or just to encourage reading. This pro- gram has received tremendous praise from the new owners of these treasures. Please contact judy.cours@gmail.com or julie.aldrich05@gmail.com if you are willing to donate books and help us out. Community Service: Solutions for Change We are on hold until SFC updates their plans for their residents. We should hear this month. Once they do, I will send out the information and we will select our next date to deliver dinner. If you would like to join our group, please contact Marilyn Barnett 310 418-9118. We serve dinner to the residents every 6-8 weeks.
Dining In, 2020-2021 Since it looks like we won’t be able to participate in this activity until late summer, I will contact everyone who has signed up for this year to see if you’d like to par- ticipate with next year’s group via email in early August. I hope we can get our group cooking and enjoying each other’s company by then! Please let me know if you would like to join our terrific group, single or couples, or be on the sub list for those who may not be available for the scheduled dinners. You don’t need to be a top chef to participate, just someone who enjoys cooking and hosting a din- ner once during the year! Please contact Melissa Anderson if you’d like to be on the list or as a sub for Dining In! Melissa Anderson DMECMAnderson@gmail.com 770-317-8741 Game Night: Saturday, May 22 6:45 On Saturday, May 22 at 6:45 we will gather on Zoom to play Boom Again! This is a nostalgic trivia game for Baby Boomers focused on the 50s, 60s and 70s. In March, we had a great turnout and lots of laughs. One person commented this was the most fun hour of their entire week! The game has questions drawn from movies, music, television, jingles, politics, social movements, and fashion. These are not SAT questions, just fun, cultural remembrances. We will play in teams, similar to Trivia Pursuit - but easier! To join the fun, email Pam at pamelashetler@hotmail.com. Special Events “Murder In Sin City” Mystery Party: Morgan Run Resort Our Murder Mystery Party has been postponed once again to a time in our future when it is much safer for us to gather for an exceptional time! As many are getting the Covid vaccine, hopefully, the beginning of the end of this mysterious period of all of our lives is in sight. In the Fall 2021, our illustrious party committee will as- sess the safety of us gathering together and continue to set a new party date and work with Morgan Run Resort to plan what promises to be a “BANG-UP TIME”! Change is coming! Beginning in July the newsletter will change to a more simplified version with less pictures and graphics. For those who want to print it out, you’ll be using less ink. For those who loved the current version...we’re sorry, but we couldn’t find people who wanted to spend the time and effort. Pictures of activities will be on the website. A big thanks goes to Kim Lubesnick and Car- ol German for all their work creating the newsletters over more than a decade! If you have any questions, please contact Jo-Ann Smith at joann.smith.july4@gmail.com.
