February 2021 ISSUE#34 From the Spencerville Residents Association (SRA) Welcome and Talofa to the 34th edition of the Styx post. We hope you have all had an enjoyable summer and got out and about in this beautiful country of ours. The SRA held the gala day, the kids xmas party and our water fun day and had great community attendance and it was fantastic to see kids and adults alike having so much fun. We are looking forward to the other events planned for the rest of the year. Our new Spencerville fire station is looking fantastic and what a great asset for our community. The new bridge and lights at the Marshlands/Lower Styx Rd intersection is well under way and will make a huge difference once completed. Please keep updated with our events by visiting our facebook and Neighbourly sites. The SRA would like to thank the Christchurch City Council/Coastal Burwood Community Board for giving us a grant from their 2020/2021 Discretionary Fund in October 2020 which we put towards our November Great Duck Race and Gala Day. Until next time Craig Pawsey - SRA president River Clean up, Duck Race & Carnival The River Clean up, Duck Race & Carnival was held a little later in November than in previous years however it was fantastic to see such a great turn out. Some of our awesome residents brought down their trailers to help collect the rubbish, we had people on kayaks in the river and lots of our local kids searched out any rubbish along the banks of the river to ensure Spencerville stays clean! The SRA then ran another fun duck race which saw the winning duck take the lead late in the race to clinch the win. 1st Place: Kevin Wheeler 2nd Place: Aria Register-Hunt 3rd Place: Chloe Wheeler Congratulations to Martin Hooper who won Best Dressed Duck. Thank you to Spencer Park surf lifesaving for keeping the ducks in the race and safe! 1|Page Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Email: styxcommunitypost@gmail.com
The carnival was lots of fun with a sausage sizzle, pedalmania providing the crazy bikes, coffee, bouncy castles and the inflatable water balls. Sports Suzie finished off the entertainment with a really fun show for all the family. Thanks to the Brooklands Fire Service for providing the water for the inflatable balls. Thank you all for your generous donations for Chch Aunties! 2|Page Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Email: styxcommunitypost@gmail.com
Spencerville Kids Christmas Party The SRA organised the children’s Christmas party which was lots of fun with running, three legged and egg & spoon races. The tug of war, once again, being a real highlight before Santa arrived on the fire truck and gave small gifts to the kids. Thank you to the Brooklands Fire Service for bringing Santa and the SRA for funding another fabulous event for our kids. 3|Page Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Email: styxcommunitypost@gmail.com
Who won? Did the kids pull the adults over the line… and did the girls beat the boys again?!? The Tug of War was lots of fun and got everyone involved! Shared plates with veggie and gluten free options supplied by the whole community! 4|Page Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Email: styxcommunitypost@gmail.com

Spencerville Domain Tree Planting – Residents Feedback required Please see aerial image of Spencerville Domain (where the Hub & Playcentre are located). Take into consideration different aspects, winter sun, soil condition, exposure to wind etc., local knowledge of what actually grows well in our area are requested. Initial Proposal: • Prune all of the large conifers and gums on the reserve, focusing on raising lower canopies to allow more side light (winter sun). • The red crosses parallel to the foot path is where it is suggested to PLAYCENTRE plant about 15 Almonds to create a frame for the park for a start. • Trying to source Red Manuka because of its history in the area. • The blue lines running along the shrub borders with plenty of gaps where residents could plant various shrubs like Feijoas, hardy lemon, kumquat, hazel, mulberry, quince (small trees) etc. • There is room for at least 50-80 plants but from donations or another suggested option for natives is www.treesthatcount.co.nz Next Steps; • Would be great if residents could meet and do some brainstorming and consider the borders as garden plots. • Arrange a planting day when trees are sourced / donated. If you are interested in contributing to the ideas or contributing by making a donation of a shrub / small tree then please contact styxcommunitypost@gmail.com detailing how you would like to help? Thanks Environment Canterbury One Canterbury Considering ‘them and us’ can be useful. It is a way to make sense of things – a constant, often subconscious, ‘compare and contrast’ exercise. We can all think of a string of these comparisons: Crusaders versus Highlanders, North Island versus South Island, New Zealand versus Australia, National Party versus Labour Party, Marmite versus Vegemite…. and town versus country. When it comes to the so-called rural-urban divide, something that comes up time and time again when it comes to the environment, we definitely need to get beyond the initial differences. In this day and age, the idea of rural versus urban when it comes to our land and water is a lazy and convenient construct that doesn’t do much to help resolve issues. 7|Page Contributions to Caroline Elkington. Email: styxcommunitypost@gmail.com
To understand whether we actually have a rural-urban divide, it is worth having a look at who we are in Canterbury and the nature of our region. We have our own peculiarities for sure, but are we really that divided? Ours is the largest region in New Zealand, one which in many people’s eyes is predominantly rural or mountainous, covering the vast areas of the Mackenzie country, the iconic Alpine rivers and lakes, the expanse of the Canterbury plains – yet we also have Christchurch, New Zealand’s second largest city, with a population of more than 380,000 people. Of Canterbury’s 45,346 square kilometres of land, a little over half is farmed, which is 18.6% of the total land area farmed in New Zealand. Just over half the South Island’s population lives in Canterbury: 624,000 people now and growing. 82% of us live in Greater Christchurch (61% in Christchurch city, 21% in the Waimakariri and Selwyn districts). So, by the numbers at least, it seems our region is quite a well-balanced mixture of both the rural and the urban. I know from many conversations with members of the community – regardless of their age, stage, background or where they live – that we all want clean water, good health and wellbeing, a prosperous economy and a positive outlook for the future. We all want measures taken to address climate change, we want Cantabrians to live well on our part of the planet, and we want to leave the region in a better state than we found it. There are similar problems in town and country environments, which require the efforts of the community to address. Take water, for example: in recent years there has been a lot of concern about the quality of water across the region. And let’s be frank, the focus of much of this anxiety has been on discharges from dairying on the Plains and how nitrates and nutrients have degraded rural waterways. This is not unfounded and is a real problem. It is also one the rural sector is now acutely aware of and, more importantly, that it is owning and taking action to fix. But water pollution is far from just a rural issue. In our urban areas there are also significant issues around water, particularly regarding effluent disposal – what people are flushing or washing down the drain – and with how much water people are using. Urban waterways are also often polluted by heavy metals, including copper from vehicle brakepads and zinc from roofing products. And there are still those who pour oil, solvents and paints down the drain without thinking what harm they will do when they reach our waterways. The urban community too is now starting to take the action needed. Different issues, same desired outcome, across the urban and rural areas. I say let’s make 2021 the year that we put down our differences, stop looking across the fence and questioning the action others are or are not taking, but rather embrace our ‘sameness’ and common goals and work as one Canterbury to get there. Proposed cancellation of the Mobile Library Service by 2022 The CCC: Long Term Draft Plan for 2021 has been released for feedback. It was noted that the proposal includes terminating the mobile library in the next few years. If you are a regular visitor of the mobile library or rely on this service, then please ensure you feedback to CCC. The feedback period runs from 12th March until the end of March. https://ccc.govt.nz/assets/Documents/The-Council/Plans-Strategies-Policies-Bylaws/Plans/Long- Term-Plan/draft2021/LTP-2021-Draft-Activity-Plan-Libraries.PDF (Page 16) LTP-2021-Draft-Activity-Plan-Libraries.PDF (ccc.govt.nz) “Mobile Library – the last review of the service was in 2014. In subsequent years, there has been a trend of declining usage of the regular service stops. Now with the network of libraries operating at pre-earthquake levels and the two mobile vehicles due for replacement in 2022, it is timely to review the purpose and value for investment of the service in its current form. Recommendation: To cease the Mobile Library service weekly stops. In light of this recommendation, the following steps are required to determine the impact of ceasing and mitigate risks of resident exclusion. • Consult with existing users on what their library and information needs are, what alternative options are available to meet their needs and any impact for them of reduced and/or removal of the Library Mobile service weekly stops. • Consult with the Rest Homes to cease the Library Mobile weekly service stops ensuring access to services is achievable in other ways. • Continue to monitor the Library Mobile service usage, with three monthly analysis of statistics and recommendations for changes. Adjust weekly timetable in response to customer feedback and usage data. • Phase out the Library Mobile service weekly stops through to 2022, to coincide with the retirement of the Library mobile van. Cessation of the service will require a change to the Activity Plan Level of Service 3.1.2.4” Quick Trivia Ten 1. What is the capital of Oman? 2. A strong focus this year will be developing a more localised curriculum. We have such a rich local history and environment, not only with the beach and dunes at Spencerville, the Brooklands Lagoon/ Te Riu o Te Aika Kawa, and Waimakariri and Pūharakekenui/Styx rivers, but also the trees, plants and animal life nestled in our school grounds. At Ouruhia we want kids to love learning, be curious, and having lots of "Wow!" moments. Kids with those attitudes and experiences will be motivated and engaged, and keen to make every step count on the road ahead… the road to a successful and positive future. Brooklands Volunteer Fire Brigade New era dawns As many of you will have notice the construction of the new Fire station is very nearly complete. And so as moving day draws ever closer anticipation grows, also many mixed emotions especially for those members and families who have been involved since before the earthquakes. The Brooklands Brigade was formed in 1973 and ever since has had a proud history of serving not only our immediate community but the whole Canterbury region. Before and during the earthquakes our brigade thrived as a cornerstone of the community, however with our building suffering earthquake damage and many of our valued members forced to leave due to the red zoning the threat of closure was very real. Luckily a new wave of members from Spencerville came on board and with enough of the experienced members staying involved to help train them the second chapter of Brooklands Fire Brigade began. Plans were made for a new state of the art station in Spencerville. The years following have been chock full of speed bumps and delays but thanks to everyone’s determination to keep the brigade going the second chapter is finally drawing to a close. The Third chapter will find us in our brand new station shared with Bottle lake Rural Fire force. While for many of our members, leaving the old station with so many memories, is an emotional task we remind ourselves it is the people who make us special not the building so with that in mind, we are proud to announce we will be moving in Mid-February with an official opening in late April. Finally, the brigade would like to thank Cook Brothers construction for working in with us so well on this huge build. Allowing us to have a lot of input into the build process and moulding the new station around our collective vision. We are actively looking for New Members preferably people who are available to respond during the day as a lot of people work daytime hours we are always keen to have a few more daytime crew. If this sounds like you, please contact either John 022 60 6643 or Ruchelle 027 444 5180 Park Rangers Plant maintenance working bee – Brooklands lagoon – Sunday 7th March – 10am-12 midday Help to maintain the plants which were planted last winter by volunteers. Spencer Beach Holiday Park Kia ora Spencerville Community It’s been a busy time at camp with over 25,000 people staying with us over the past four months! That’s a lot of people through our gates but of course our numbers are slightly down with no internationals, that being said we have had tremendous support from the locals of Christchurch and the rest of New Zealand. Christmas and New Year all went very smoothly with no major incidents reported. We still have a number of busy weekends leading up to Easter with school camps in full swing and sporting tournaments. Was great to have the Police and Land Search and rescue teams stay with us for a training weekend, the helicopters and search dogs were a hit with the camp kids! Easter Camp is fast approaching, just a reminder that the camp is closed to the public over this time including the shop and office. Closed Thursday 1st April - Re opening Tuesday 6th April. Planning is underway for winter renovations of our final 6 Tourist Flats and replacement of the bouncy pillow. Enjoy the Autumn!
