PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017/18 WOW! what a wonderful year it has turned out to be for me personally, right from the start we hit the ground running in so many ways. It has been an absolute honour to have served my time as President of this wonderful club and most of all served along side all of you as a fellow Lion. Report Card - Self Assessment… From the outset of the pre-board meeting held in June last year I asked the board for support on changing a few things but nothing too major… with focus to be on: • Discounting Membership fees, with couples saving even more - by raising funds for our Club Admin (Successfully Completed) • NOT to call our “Club Meetings” (meetings are boring), but to say “Club Dinners”! (Successfully Completed) • Job/Duties delegation every 3 months - Anyone can get a role/project, even new induced members without having to wait for next Lions year to start, plus the roles are only for a short period of time. Members delegated to roles can then takes ownership of that role/project, and/if required form a committee of helpers. (Successfully Completed) • Increase Fellowship & Fun with more socials. (Just a Pass - was unable to delegate this duty during the year, it was very disappointing - BUT we all still had lots of fellowship, massive room for improvement) • Increase Public Awareness about projects. (Successfully Completed - I like to think there were some great Newspaper articles - plus with Kaylene’s help on Facebook we did AOK) • Increase membership - including inviting partners. (Successfully Completed, but was very disappointing to lose a few, but we are still in good shape) • Changing Divvy up - disburse funds as we go… By having members nominate local charities for the Community Raffle fund to be dedicated towards. (Just a Pass - this didn’t really workout, we only had two nominations, [Diabites Awareness & Be an Elf] I see this being something we could still improve on) • Dinner Agendas - with a Members Brag or Spruik (FAIL! I recall Len was the only one to spruce, so we soon put a stopped this) - Mix up the way the order and the way we would do the Invocation, Welcome Song, Farewell Song / Advance Australia Fair, and yet still retain our traditions for mixed or formal dinners. (Successfully Completed, some people may have liked but I didn’t have any feedback if they didn’t!) • Hold more Social nights away from the our regular dinner venue, with chill out nights that we would cater for ourselves (Due to Wet/Cold weather and wrong time of the year – but the nights we had were wonderful! Room for improvement but Successfully Completed all the same for the 2 nights we had) • Change the day & times of Board meetings (FAILED, for a number of different reasons - was worth a try just the same) • Create a past members / care officer (Successfully Completed in part but yet a FAIL, still room for improvement) Only the members will be the judge in the end, somethings may stay and others will go but it is always worth trying new ideas. These goals were just the items to focused on at that first pre-board meeting, let alone the things I had going on in my head for the so called first offical Board meeting to take place in July… Things don’t always turn out to plan! In the end and as stated in the Handover Ceremony of the Board & President, it states “Your record of achievement will then be history” and history it now is… The theme for the year was “Service through fellowship” - While LCI was “We Serve” with 5 key service areas: Diabetes, Environment, Hunger Relief, Pediatric Cancer & Vision. Our club continued to cover these areas with flying colours, from our successful donation of $1000 to Diabetes awareness from our community raffle, to the completion of the Avenue of trees for the environmental project, our continued work with Meals on Wheel and providing food for the op-shop, raising and donating funds to cancer & medical research programs and collection of used reading glasses throughout the district for recycling - we covered all 5 areas for Lions International. service through fellowship 57TH ANNUAL CHANGEOVER Page 3
PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017/18 CONT. The main goal for the theme, Service through fellowship, was that when people have fun together, it forms better working relationships, it inspires new ideas and thoughts, then before you know it - you are happy just to do things because they become fun to do because of the fellowship shared. Thursday night fellowship has continued during the year at the RSL thanks to Ron, Merryl, Graeme, Anna, Pat & Judy - the stable crew... with as many as 20 people attending on occasions, remember everyone is welcome, 6pm Thursdays, It’s a great night out! NOW Double WOW! where could one start to thank members - well no further then Kaylene - that’s for sure, without her I wouldn’t be here today, now at the end of a memorable & great year… Kaylene always wished to join Lions just didn’t want to join so soon, but I’m so grateful she did and not just for the amount of work she has done for the club, but because of what she has done for me personally… what she does allows me the time to dedicate to Lions, not only on a Club level but that of District level as well. I promise I’ll get those jobs done around the house now! I’d also like to acknowledge my dear and wonderful parents, Kerry & Graham Perrett who instilled into me the importance of hard work and community and I am forever grateful that they encouraged me to join Rotaract at the tender age of 16, (34 years ago) in which I held pretty much every club position possible plus those on District including District Representative which I know enabled me to handle all situations that were presented this year. Thanks Mum & Dad, love you dearly. FINALLY Each and every member of the club, past and present, old & new, should be extremely proud of the achievements of this club over the past 57 years of service to the community, and this year is no exception… We have a dedicated group of members who do what they can, when they can, and you just can’t ask of anymore then that. A massive THANK YOU! A special thanks to all those members who stepped up when asked to do so, either by volunteering your time or having your arm twisted to perform at a Rotary debate. I won’t go in to naming individual members for each and every project or roles, otherwise it will be a list of the each and every member, and then some! Please be assured that your efforts have not gone un-noticed and is much appreciated. As president you get to see a little more of what really goes on within a club then sometimes you would like, but I would not change a thing during the whole year, well maybe one thing - I’d set wine limits on a Thursday night at the RSL, lol. I sincerely wish Lion David & Lions Lady Sarah and the new board all the very best for the coming year, the club and members will support you all the way, I know that for a fact - sit back and enjoy the ride, it’ll be a great moment in your life! Lion Stuart Perrett, President 2017/18 LIONS CLUB OF STANTHORPE INC. Page 4
TREASURER’S REPORT Firstly, what an effort! The Club should be proud of what it’s achieved throughout the year, and the difference we have been able to make our community. It was privilege to play a small roll in the clubs contributions to the community this past year. I would like to thank Lion Dina Tait for her wonderful support with the implementation of the EFT payment system, and to Lion Kurt for his guidance when I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. The EFT payment system has helped reduced the workload on the Treasurer position, and more importantly it allows prompt payment of invoices & community raffle reimbursements to local businesses. Putting the treasurer hat on for a moment, it’s worth a small reminder that if you RSVP for a dinner meeting, we still get charged if you are unable to make it, with funds coming out of our Admin Account. $20 here and there isn’t much I know, but it does add up. Now the fun bit………although there are still some funds to be disbursed from Divvy Up night, just waiting for details from recipients, we were able to distribute the following funds: COMMUNITY FUNDS DISBURSEMENT Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) ....................$3,000.00 Stanthorpe St Vincent DePaul .................................$500.00 Lifeflight ..................................................................$3,000.00 Australian Lions Drug Awareness ..........................$500.00 Lions-Beyondblue ‘Joining Hands’ ......................$3,000.00 Australian Lions Childhood Cancer .......................$500.00 Be An Elf Project Lions-Op Shop.........................$3,000.00 Lions Cord Blood Foundation (Lions 201V5 Project – Mics Community Projects: Show Bar - Trees ....$2,526.09 Lions Club of Waverley) .....................................$500.00 Lions Medical Research Foundation (LMRF).....$2,500.00 Granite Belt Chaplaincy ...........................................$500.00 Granite Belt Support Services (GBSS) ................$2,000.00 Stanthorpe Scout Group ..........................................$500.00 Lions Prostate Cancer Research and Stanthorpe Girl Guides.............................................$500.00 Treatment Projects ...........................................$2,000.00 Stanthorpe Historical Society..................................$500.00 Lions Parks Projects (Donnellys Castle).............$2,000.00 Stanthorpe Blue Care ...............................................$500.00 Park Trees (LCI Environmental Program) ...........$1,500.00 Story Dogs (Dog Sponsorship) ................................$500.00 Swags - Op Shop....................................................$1,300.00 Hearing Dog ...............................................................$500.00 Operation Smile Australia (Lions Australia Project – Leukaemia Foundation (Shave for a cure) ...........$500.00 Lions Club of Brisbane Holland Park) ..........$1,000.00 Granite Belt Little Athletics (Marque) ...................$500.00 LCI (Lions International) .......................................$1,000.00 Lions ALF – Cyclone / Flood / Fire..........................$500.00 ALF (Australian Lions Foundation) .....................$1,000.00 Lions Youth of the Year ............................................$441.00 Artworks Granite Belt Inc. FIRST VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT I'd firstly like to take this opportunity to thank the Lions Club members of Stanthorpe for helping to make the move from 2nd VP to 1st VP a smooth and seamless transition. While I still enjoyed my involvement in the Community Raffle, the shift in focus towards Meals on Wheels gave me an opportunity to connect with a different demographic within the Stanthorpe community. Thanks must go to all members who lent their valuable time to deliver and help keep this essential service going. Special thanks also to Liz Duell, who as the Meals on Wheels co-ordinator, helps everything to run smoothly and efficiently. All the best to Wayne Tait who will relinquish his role as Catering Chairman to take on the responsibilities of M.O.W. And lastly to both Stuart and Kaylene Perrett who have implemented a wealth of positive changes within the club whilst strengthening its fellowship and spirit. I look forward to continuing with new projects and a host of regular club projects that the Lions Club of Stanthorpe continue to patronise in order to serve our community. Lion David Hume, First Vice President 2017/18 SECOND VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT The community raffle has continued to be an important avenue of raising funds, we generally had very good support throughout the year with people volunteering their time each fortnight. This year we introduced a new method on announcing the winners, firstly we stamped each and every ticket with the web address and also promoting that in the monthly presidents news paper article along with post them on Facebook. Plus we had the previous winners shown on the IGA table & Barrow at the following raffle. This along saved us well over a $1000 during the year. We also introduced selling tickets in the industrial area “ every now and again, the response was very good, YES, I’ve special thanks for Doug Collett checked my balls, for doing this during the year. Community Raffle Project and they are ” Time – IGA, Street, Pub & all good! Industrial sellers – Approx. 200 Hrs. Wayne Tait Lion Wayne Tait LIONS CLUB OF STANTHORPE INC. Page 6
COMMUNITY SERVICE’S REPORTS Lions Mints Sales of mints increased this year due to some new drop-off points, which have proved to be very profitable for the club. There has been an increase in costs for these products, therefore there was a need to increase the sale price to 60c per roll, to improve our profit margin. The Lions Club of Stanthorpe wishes to thank all the outlets for their support. Lion Ron Sonego Lions Recycle for Sight Australia Inc The Lions Recycle for Sight Program in Stanthorpe has collected approximately 1800 pairs of used glasses and 8 sets of hearing aids from the following collection centres, Villa Carramar, Granite Belt Medical Services, Soul Pattinson Chemist, St Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army Family Store, Blue Care, The Physiotherapy Centre, The Courtyard Mathew St. These form part of the 10,000 pairs collected per week and sent to either Clontarf or Caboolture depots. The two centres operate 3 full days or 5 mornings a week. The workforce includes 30 persons on the Commonwealth Work for the Dole program, 4-10 persons on community correction orders and many volunteers. They expect to achieve a throughput of close to one million pair of refurbished spectacles by 2021. 450,000 adults or children in the third world unable to see receive this gift free every year. Lion Leon McCosker Lions Projects • Donnelly’s Castle – mowing as needed, cutting and removing of tree. • Showgrounds – Laurie Harvey Bar – Clear coat iron bark tops and posts etc. – Finish painting, west wall inside, under bar lining and installed new sink and carboard. – New concrete entrance and door. – Show Society installed better lighting. • 100 Trees project – fertilize, mulch and watering. – replaced trees that were vandalised. – installed video surveillance signs and camera. – Dedicated project to 100 years of Lions International followed by a BBQ – Plaques arrived and fixed onto rocks at both ends of the project. • Soldiers Settlers Monument and Park – Marking out, mowing etc. – further to add at the next Lions meeting. Thanks to all Lions who have worked on these projects. Lion Ray Palmer 57TH ANNUAL CHANGEOVER Page 7
COMMUNITY SERVICE’S REPORTS Santa Sack I consider it a privilege to organise the Santa Sack on behalf of our members. It would not have been possible without the great help of my mate Lion Pat, together with President Stuart and Kaylene and Lion Mark McCosker, in particular. For our Club the Santa Sack is possibly the biggest fund-raiser in non Apple & Grape Festival years. This year it produced great results, with all tickets being sold. The final tickets being sold only minutes before the draw. For the period of the Santa Sack we banked over $8,000 and sold almost $1,400 of Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings. I think the location of the Sack outside, and stored overnight at Rob Catterin's Barber shop is excellent and the co-operation from Rob & Gabriel is much appreciated - and we presented them with a Certificate of thanks. Next time we must make an effort to negotiate with Council to obtain a permit for the period of 6 weeks, instead of actually only receiving permits for 2 weeks at a time. Something else to consider for next year is to encourage members to take, sell and return raffle books to the table. If you can’t sell them - treat it as a donation to the cause, as a lot of us do. When rostered- on it is not appropriate to sell your own books. Thanks to all Lion members for your help and assistance, as this has been a great result for the Club. All the winners were locals and very excited to pick up their prizes on the day. The draw was a little different this year - thanks to President Stuart and his ping-pong balls! It really worked extremely well, and got the crowd involved picking the numbers. We have also written a document this year - giving a set of guidelines, of how the Santa sack has been run over the many years it has been in operation. So if anyone else feels like having a go it will help you - but may we suggest 2 people, as it takes a lot of the pressure off by having a partner. COMMUNITY SERVICE’S REPORTS Be an Elf When I suggested to the Board that I felt the "Be an Elf' program would be a good fit for our Club, I had no idea what we were in for. I was aware the program was run in South Eastern suburbs in Brisbane following my daughter volunteering in the past, and believed it would work well with our Community Service Lions Club. We are the first to run the "Be an Elf' outside the Brisbane area and joined forces with Deb de Hamer from the Stanthorpe Community Op Shop, as I believed they had expertise that we didn't have - and we had expertise in areas they didn't. We formed a small working Sub-Committee with Pat, Wayne, Deb and myself to get the project started. Initially we anticipated approximately 40 - 50 recipients, but we finished up with 120 which presented funding and distribution nightmares - all of which have been met. The program plan was to provide Christmas presents to underprivileged children in the area to the value of approx $25.00. We raised almost $3000. It came from 2 Raffles in October, funding from Bendigo Bank, Stanthorpe RSL and $650.00 from some of our most generous members. The request letters were distributed to Primary Schools in the area and also collected by Deb from the Op Shop - that's when the work started. Compiling shopping lists for all of the 120 recipients, and making sure the correct gift went into the correct bag. This was done magnificently by Anna. It was a real labour of love. Judy, Pat, Dina, Wayne, Anna & I spent some time shopping in Toowoomba after exhausting local Retail Supplies. It was an interesting day, but we enjoyed ourselves on completion. Monday December 18th was 'Wrapping Day' at the Op Shop, and special thanks goes to the volunteers who assisted. Distribution was split into Southern, Central and Northern areas and was completed by Friday December 22nd A very special thanks to Mark Mccosker who donated and printed up “ 100 special drink bottles branded 'Be an Elf' and 'Lions of Stanthorpe' which were put into the bags. To those Lions that helped, donated money and kind, also wives My new outfit for ” and partners - this project could not have been completed without you. A special thanks to Anna for her diligent assistance. next years Having completed our 1st year we are now aware of what is involved and we can see the 'Be an Elf' program expanded in the area Anonymous to both Tenterfield as well as Warwick. COMMUNITY SERVICE’S REPORTS Catering Catering this year was a challenge, starting with Snowflakes. Positioning of the stall plus the number of food stalls decreased our opportunity for a successful event. • Light the Night went very well – all enjoyed the night. • Carols in the Park ended very good after a slow start – sold out. • That Dam Ride was a good day out, thanks to Dan. • We suggest supporting Youth Week sausage sizzle again. There was some great young talent on show. • Apple & Grape again showed how our club comes together when needed with 45 members and Lions Ladies working over the 2 days, again it was a difficult catering job owing to the number of food stalls. • Charity Ball breakfast went well. Many thanks to my committee over the past 4 years for all of their support. Donations of excess food this last year went to: International Club value $50.00, Salvation Army value $80.00, CDS value $60.00 & Op Shop value $500.00 Lion Wayne Tait Outback Tour – 2017 As Lions members & tag alongs set off last August on the Captain Thunderbolt Tour were they have raised over $6000 for charities such as the Royal Flighting Doctor and LifeFlight. While visiting many towns they have also injected funds directly in to those communities – these include, Ashford (Pindari Dam), Uralla, Wollomombi Falls, Dorrigo, Nymboida, Mininie Water, Bonalbo, Queen Mary Falls & Killarney. On the final night the Lions Club of Killarney put on a dinner fest and the group held an fun Auction with items gathered along their journey, adding to the total funds. The committee is now in planning mode to travel to Far North Queensland (Tablelands) later this year, so if you are interested in tagging along, please contact Wayne Tait. Lion Stuart Perrett Wallangarra Park BBQ removal & Tractor Repaint Early in the year I spent some time going around to our parks to see what things could be easly done to create little projects for members to be a part of. Two of these project just happen to be at the one park, the first was the removal of old brick BBQ’s, well as soon as it was mentioned like magic they were gone, thanks to a few members, I know they had trouble trying to dump the rubbish out at the tip, but they got the job done. Thanks to all who were involved. Second project was the “ repainting of the tractor, no words Battleship can say how awesome it now looks, do yourself a favour and go grey would have a look. Thanks to Pat, be my ” Graeme, Wayne and Len for all the effort, kids will have wonderful suggestion memories for many years to come. Len Rigg Lion Stuart Perrett LIONS CLUB OF STANTHORPE INC. CLUB SERVICE’S REPORTS Social Activities and Recreation New members We welcomed some new members including Kaylene Perrett, Katy McKenzie, Cynan Lewis, Kym Dachs and returning members Ewan Young and Paul Drake to the club. Club sponsors have been proactive in giving the new members plenty of information about Lions and keeping them informed on what the new members can expect. Thanks to those Lions (sponsors) who do this and we are delighted that these new members have agreed to join us. Social Activities Visits to local clubs and our own get-togethers including the Lions Christmas Party, “2 Stu’s Birthday Bash” and BBQ following working bees, Santa Sack, Apple & Grape, That Dam Ride, Snowflakes in Stanthorpe, Laurie Harvey Bar, Charity Ball BBQ, Outback Tour, 100 trees walk commemoration, Memorial Wall to name a few gave the club members the chance to kick back & enjoy the fellowship. Who will forget the May dinner meeting at Masons with the Hawaiian theme – Aloha Baby!!. Guest Speakers & guests We welcomed a few guest speakers to the club throughout the year. Andreas from Hellenic Club Brisbane & proponent for “Mates 4 Mates” was an inspiring guest speaker in June. Stanthorpe Community Bank Young Ambassador Lateesha Stabile and guests included Margie Davis, Katy McKenzie, Kym Dachs, Paul Drake, Cynan Lewis, June, Steve & Deb De Hama & partner Jack, Ann & Don Reed. Also we welcomed friends of the club & former Lions ladies, Jeanene Chapman, Margery Mann, Margaret Harvey and Ness Cathcart and her daughter. Facebook Continues to provide immediate exposure of our club events & news to members and friends and the public. This is a growing Community Raffle winner announcements are cheaply & ideally broadcast through this medium. Dinner Collectors, Tail twisters and Lion Tamers Thanks go to all the collectors who filled in and collected the dinner dues for the club. Thanks to the tamers & the twisters who prepared our meetings for us, and entertained us while skilfully extracting money from us at the same time. President Stuart’s idea to share the workload in turns throughout the year was a good one and allowed members to help out for a limited period, not for a whole year. Chase the Joker The kitty continues to build in the Chase the Joker and one lucky winner will eventually pick up a lovely cash bonus. When will it be? LIONS CLUB OF 57TH ANNUAL STANTHORPE INC.
