2020 Chevrolet Corvette Spied FacebookTwitterGoogle+SMSEmailShare Image credit: S. Baldauf/SB Medien via Motor Authority Motor Authority reports that rumors of a mid-engine Corvette may actually be true and buyers can expect to see this new generation hitting showrooms in 2020. Then new Corvette, C8, was expected to be available in 2019; however, 2019s are already in production leaving no room for the C8. Even so, that's still a relatively short lifespan for the current C7 Corvette which arrived as a 2014 model. The reason for the quick changeover is because General Motors had started working on a mid-engine design for the C7 but ended up scrapping the plans in the tumult of the 2009 bankrupt- cy, with the C7 we ended up with being a placeholder. Looking at the new shots, we can see that the C8 will be similar in size to the C7 but with a lower, wider stance. It won't get vertical-lifting doors of many exotics, though it looks like there will be a short front overhang. Flanking the engine bay looks to be a pair of chunky buttresses and we’re told designers will add a sheet of glass in the center to show off the car’s engine. One of the biggest chal- lenges is thought to be heat management. Our spies say the prototypes have been running almost exclusively at night to avoid long- distance lenses with 50 megapixels to throw around. It's also been protected from almost all employees at GM and instead to only a small cir- cle of designers and engineers—as was the case with Ford's GT supercar. The new Corvette won’t be a pricey limited edition supercar like the GT, though. We hear the basis for the car’s mid-engine platform will be the C7’s aluminum spaceframe structure rather than a completely new design. We also hear there will be a new LT7 twin-turbo V-8 and possibly a hybrid option at some point. The base engine is expected to be the C7's LT1 V-8, though. An exact release date for the 2020 Chevy Corvette remains unknown, but we do expect to see it sometime in late 2019. We should learn more in the next year or so, so stay tuned. How Much is the 2020 Corvette? How much can you expect to pay for a brand new 2020 C8 Corvette? As for pricing, we expect the 2020 Corvette to move upmarket from its current starting price of $58,315 (destination fees includ- ed). At the top end, we also expect this range to extend much higher than the current $127,820 (destination fees included) price of the ZR1. Ka Leo O Corvette - The Voice of Corvette Vol. 47 Issue 2 p. 4
By Jay Farmer Waikele Country Club parking lot provided a spectacular array of American automotive perfection as the site of the 2018 Corvette Club of Hawaii End of Year Banquet. Some twenty Corvettes representing almost every generation conveyed the CCOH membership to the Waikele Country Club clubhouse for a gala that celebrated an exceptional year for the club. Patrons of the Waikele Country Club were seen admiring the cars and taking pictures, and it’s clear our presence provided a new level of class and elegance. The End of Year Banquet is a great opportunity for the members to gather and recall the myriad events that the club participated in throughout the past year. A lightning-fast slide-show left running throughout the evening depicted island cruises, car shows, monthly dinners and breakfasts, and served as a graphic reminder of just how active this club is. Outgoing VP, Tim Smith said of the slide -show “I liked the video and kept watching it”. The event began at 5:30 with a no-host bar. Charles provided grace, and initiated the buffet line based upon length of membership. The buffet consisted of prime rib, fish, chicken, vegetables, fruits and side dishes. Rich Galope said, “The food was great, especially the prime rib. I did miss the rice, no big deal as I enjoyed the potatoes. The food presentation was also good. Saying grace was a nice touch”. Tim Smith added, “For the banquet, the food was good, but too much garlic on the vegetables. The prime rib and fish were the best”. Once everyone finished eating and the dishes were cleared away, club president Charles Owens commenced the evening’s program. We began with the January Monthly Meeting, with old and new business. New members who came to the banquet were voted in, and the meeting ended with a thanks from President Owens to the 2018 board members for everything they did to make the year a success. Charles then introduced the new members of the board. Thankfully, a majority of the 2018 board remains in place, with Charles Owens winning a second term as President, Gary Kahn serving as 2019 Treasurer, Ron Kennedy staying on as Membership Chairman, and Peter Robb, remaining until a move later this year, as the Master at Arms. Jay Farmer replaced Tim Smith as Vice President, Susan Canuela replaced Barb Karodia as Secretary, and Hank Ah Hee will assume the duties of Master at Arms when Peter moves. Dan Vancil stepped down as the Newsletter Editor, whose duties will be fulfilled by Charles and Jay in the interim until a replacement is found. A new position was recognized when Richard Long was sworn in as the new CCOH National Corvette Museum (NCM) Am- bassador. Charles then presented trophies to Hank Ah Hee for Member of the Year; Richard Galope for New Member of the Year; Richard and Patty Long for Couple of the Year; Danny and Adlla Mora for New Couple of the Year, and Tim Smith was presented with the President’s Award. The evening’s fes- tivities ended with a gift of a Hot Wheels Corvette for each member from the two members of CCOH with the longest length of membership, Jeff Cadavona and Dale Head. Club Members were most complimentary of the banquet. Richard Galope said, “Charles, you always fill the air with energy and enthusiasm. You always charge up the mem- bers and make the club a fun and enjoyable club, I love the positive atmosphere. Don’t let this go to your head, you still could get impeached for excessive smiling and exces- sive e-mails. Being the winner of the new member award was nice. I appreciate the award and thank the board for the honor. As you no- ticed, we lingered and were almost the last to leave and meeting the new members was nice. Diana and I enjoyed ourselves. Thank you to the Board for all the hard work.” Jade Young added: “Steve and I thoroughly enjoyed the party. The other club members on our table were outstand- ing and we had so much fun talking. The food was great, venue excellent with ample parking. The only thing we would change would be to slow the video down just a bit. Charles was great as always. He kept things flowing and shared a lot of information. We would also like to send a spe- cial thank you to Jeff and Dale for being so generous in their gift of a Corvette Hot Wheels toy for each of us. That was truly a special thing to do.” Member of the Year, Hank Ah Hee summed it up best with his comments: “I en- joyed having my wife (Kathy) attend this event with me and seeing her enjoying the night. We have been members for just over 2 years, but due to conflicting schedules and commitments, she missed most of our events and functions. It was good to see her socializing and laughing with other members and their partners. She was surprised when she won a door prize raffle. We both were really sur- prised when I received a trophy and recognition for being the "Member of the Year." It was an honor and we both felt proud. A big Mahalo to the Corvette Club of Hawaii and the member- ship for contributing to a wonderful evening.” Ka Leo O Corvette - The Voice of Corvette Vol. 47 Issue 2 p. 7
By Jay Farmer As most members know, my Indy 78 suffered a power steering casualty at Corvettes In Paradise on November 10th. My mechanic was on the Mainland for over a month, and I finally got on his schedule in late December to diagnose and fix the issue, which was a low-pressure power steering line that needed replacing. Now that it was fixed, I was ready to get the Pace Car back onto Hawaii’s roadways where it belongs. As is often the case with a 40, excuse me, now 41 year-old car, when one thing goes, it can be the beginning of a whole series of unfortunate events. This proved to be the case with this particular repair. I got up early to drive to my office at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. I’m pleased to report that Indy 78 performed flawlessly and it was one of the most enjoyable rides I’ve had in a long time. After a couple of hours in the office, I began the return trip to Ewa Beach on the H-3 towards town. Just past the exit for the Kamehameha Highway, she began to gasp and sputter. I could smell Texaco 92 Octane fuel, and my gas gauge began to move South. Not good. I pulled to the side of the H-3, engaged the emergency flashers and raised the hood. By this time, there was a puddle under the beast, and I examined all of the fuel lines from the fuel pump, but could not locate the source of the leak. I unholstered my Samsung and using the Yelp App, called for a tow. The tow truck operator who finally called me back said for a trip to Ewa Beach from Kailua, it would cost $350.00, “CASH, Brah”. I began questioning my loyalty to Indy 78 and wondering what else I could do. Resigned to my plight, I clinched my sphincter muscles and told him to bring it. Sitting on the guard rail next to the H-3 Town-Bound on an early Saturday morning, I began to contemplate my circumstances. I’m healthy. I have a beautiful wife and family waiting for me at home. I have great friends and a good job that pays the bills. The Pace Car was shining with a fresh coat of Top Coat F11, and she looked absolutely beautiful with the Ko’olau Mountains in the background and I thought there must be worst places for a breakdown. And hey, I own this piece of automotive art! I live where most people save for a lifetime just to visit. All of a sudden, I realized I had no reason to feel sorry for myself, that most people would trade places with me in a heartbeat and I should be darn grateful for my station in life. I sat back and enjoyed the view as I awaited the hook pirate. Ka Leo O Corvette - The Voice of Corvette Vol. 47 Issue 2 p. 8
As I came to this realization, the most miraculous thing happened. A 1981 burnt orange C-3 Corvette that I hadn’t seen before pulled in front of my stricken mount and parked on the shoulder. A smiling driver alighted, walked to where I was perched on the guard rail and said “I just had to stop and help a fellow Corvetter”. I introduced myself and learned this Good Samaritan’s name was Carlton Boydston. We talked a bit about his car, which he said he just had gotten on the road, that it had been sitting in a field for years. He just painted it the week before. It was very much a work in progress, and he had justifiable pride in his car. I saw a passion in him for his car, and like he did, I saw the beauty and the potential in this classic. Carlton suggested we start my car and see if we could determine the source of the leak. I did, and he spotted right away that the fuel line going into the carburetor had just backed off. Fetching a flathead screw driver, he tightened the clamp and eliminated the need for a tow truck and saved me a lot of Benjamins. However, the old girl’s battery had just given up and we couldn’t get enough power to start. Without hesitation, Carlton fired up his C-3, executed a U-turn on the H-3 and parked in the right-hand lane, facing the opposite direction of traffic so he could use the jumper cables that I had just added to one of the Pace Car’s storage compartments this past weekend. Just like that, I was fixed and back in business. Before we parted, I asked Carlton if he was interested in joining the Club, to which he enthusiastically replied in the affirmative. Carlton executed another U-turn and we drove over the Ko’olaus through the Hirano Tunnel to the H-1 in parade formation. With a shaka out of his driver’s window, we parted ways as he joined the H-1 East bound and I motored West towards Ewa with a car that was once again running like a Swiss Watch. Do you believe in angels? I sure do. Corvette People are the BEST! Ka Leo O Corvette - The Voice of Corvette Vol. 47 Issue 2 p. 9

Ka'a (Car) Trivia “Car Stuff” Aloha Kākou, Love to us all!. This is the year of Kamapua’a. In Hawaiian mythology, Kamapu- a’a was a demigod who loved beauty, decadence and anything sexy. There is no doubt ,in my mind, his car of choice would have been a Corvette. Kamapua’a was a “lady’s man,” he was quite the party animal who no only loved to love women but loved playing games. This year in keeping with the spirit of things .”Sidelines “ decided to forego legends and join in the fun and games this year advocates. By Steve Rich My wife and I moved to the Big Island last November and a week later I picked up my Corvette (the Mistress) from Matson in Hilo. She had been at sea for over three weeks and much like a sailor’s spouse, upon seeing her, I was anxious to take her for a ride. While driving back to Waikoloa I noticed several Corvettes on the road. It was great to see that oth- ers on the Island were taking ad- vantage of the Hawaiian sun as many were convertibles or had their roof panels removed. This was not the norm for me as I lived in Washington which has but two seasons, August and Rain. I thought to myself, it sure would be great if there was a Corvette Club on the Big Island just like the Oahu Corvette Club of Hawaii (CCoH) that I had recently become an out- of-town member of. Being a member of a club but not being able to participate in the club activities, in my opinion, doesn’t reflect the true fun and enjoyment of membership. It certainly lacks the comradery, adven- tures and memories made that one looks forward to with participation. Perusing the internet to see if there was a Corvette club on the Big Island, I found it dis- couraging to find that there was only a classic car club (Hawaii Classic Cruizers, Inc.). Even though I’m a classic, my Mistress isn’t, so together we wouldn’t be a good fit. In the past I’ve owned classic mistress’s but now I prefer the comfort and convenience that only a relationship with a much younger one can provide. I was a bit discouraged as we were seeking the compan- ionship of other like-similars, regardless of their pedi- gree whether C-1 through C-7. So what were we to do? Like a cartoon character with an idea, the light bulb above my head lit up. My thought was to seek the blessing of the Corvette Club of Hawaii and start a Big Island Chapter. I have some time available now to ac- complish this as it’s at the discretion of Hawaii Coun- ty’s Building Department if and when I start the con- struction of our new residence. I’m told that this is but an exercise in patience-building, really? Ka Leo O Corvette - The Voice of Corvette Vol. 47 Issue 2 p. 19
Last Thursday, I met John in the parking lot of First Hawaiian Bank in Waikoloa, a gentleman who owns a beautiful Artic White on Adrenaline Red Convertible C7. We chatted only a short while and I found that there was a total of 74 fiberglass beauties here, now there’s 75. We both con- cluded that it would be great to formally organize as many of them as we could and form a club. I shared my idea about forming a Chapter of the CCoH verses starting from scratch. We agreed that there was no need to reinvent the wheel if we could make this happen. John is a pretty busy guy with his business and his free-time donation to the Boy Scouts of America. This led me to believe that I shouldn’t ask for anymore of his time to get a club organized. The next day while at the Waikoloa Post Office I met Blaine, a retired Real Estate Agent from CA who was driving a Crystal Red on Cashmere Convertible C6. I asked him if he’d be interested in joining a Corvette Club. With that true sports car excitement only a Corvette owner understands, he replied “you bet”, so now there’s three of us. That was the interest-confirmation I needed so I reached out to President Charles and he agreed that this was a good idea and that the CCoH would be open to a Big Island Chapter. And so it begins, the formation of a Corvette Club on the Big Island. You can visit http://corvetteclubhawaii.com/ for additional information about the club. If you own a Corvette and are interested in joining CCoH Big Island Chapter, we’d welcome your club application. http://corvetteclubhawaii.com/wp-content/ uploads/2018/06/CCOH-Application.pdf Keep in mind that this Chapter is in its pre-infancy stages and it will take some time to get it up and rolling. Be patient with me as I’ve not organized a club be- fore but I know together we can make this happen. Please feel free to call or email me if you’d be interested in joining or want to talk about your ownership of America’s greatest sports car. Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Corvette! 1982 “Silver Shark” Corvette Donated By National Corvette Museum When Alisa Alvarez became interested in Corvettes and their history, she first researched the years before deciding which she wanted to own. “I like the C3 the best, and then decided I liked the 1982 the best out of the generation. So that was the first Corvette I ever purchased.” Turns out, the car was pretty rare. Clad in silver paint, it was one of only 711 that year to bear the shade, and was lovingly nicknamed ‘Silver Shark’. On top of that, it was only the 188 th car to roll off the line at Bowling Green Assembly for the 1982 model year. “The car was one of only 923 cars in 1982 to have the option code UM4 – an AM/FM radio with 8-track,” said Alisa. “The previous owner had upgraded the radio, but we located the original and re-inserted it into the car.” Over the years, Alisa worked to make the car as original as possible. “I looked into the Na- tional Corvette Restorers’ Society standards and how to get the car as close to original as I could. It was the last year for the third generation. I did a few things here and there to get it back how it was.” Alisa purchased the car in 2008 and would take it to shows and parade it around. “I love cars, and love meeting people and seeing their cars,” she added. Shortly thereafter, she also purchased a 2007. Over time, the ‘82 didn’t get used as much, and had been sitting for a little bit. “It’s pretty original, and I’d thought perhaps the National Corvette Museum would be interested in it.” As a member of the Museum for over 10 years, Alisa had read in America’s Sports Car mag- azine about how the Museum was seeking certain years of Corvettes. “1982 was one of the years on the list, and I thought this would be a good way to share it with others. It ’s an early car, a rare color, and an early Bowling Green car.” “Corvette enthusiasts support the Museum and think it’s a great thing. People can see the history and it’s living history. I didn’t want to sell the car to just any- body.” Thank you to Alisa for her gener- osity and for her role in helping to preserve the history of the iconic Corvette! https://www.corvettemuseum.org/1982-corvette-donated/ Ka Leo O Corvette - The Voice of Corvette Vol. 47 Issue 2 p. 21
A Texas rancher was visiting a local farmer in Waimanalo. The land was tiny and the Texan was surprised by its small size compared to what he had in Texas. Texan; “Is this all of your land?” Farmer; “Well, YES it is!” said the proud Hawaiian farmer as he showed the Texan around his farm. “Here is where I grow our tomatoes, here is where I grow cucumbers, here is where I grow squash and over there I built a play set for my kids next to the doghouse, This is all mine!” Texan; “You mean this is it? That’s all of it?” Farmer; “Yep, this is really all mine, I'm a lucky man!” Texan; “Well son, back home I'd get in my truck before the sun comes up and I can drive and drive and drive, until the sun sets. Then I'd only be halfway across my land!” Farmer: "I understand, I used to have a truck like that too” Texan; “HUH?” Who knows what kind and year of truck this is? Well, Corvette fans, it’s already the end of the road for January 2019 but we still have 11 more months of fun in the sun this year! Based on member’s comments, hopefully it was a little easier to read this month’s newsletter as we standardized all fonts to 14, upgraded to higher quality pictures and adjusted for more content. However, please feel free to give us your input for improvement. Should we add something else? Is it good, ok or bad? We want to hear from you as the Board changed the newsletter just a bit and we’re open to your suggestions. As you can see, we added news articles from the websites of Chevrolet www.media.chevrolet.com and the National Corvette Museum www.corvettemuseum.org which will be featured monthly, Elithe works hard on her “Sidelines” page with a short insight and a new mind tweaking puzzle; Hank shares with us an enjoyable humor in his “Hanks Hut” section; we still have the famous “Tool Time” page; dates were added to the Birthday and Wedding anniversary page so you will know when to call a member; we now have a “FaceBook” page with some quotes, questions and cool pictures from the previous month and a story from the BIG Island “Kona Chief” our pre-stage newest chapter. We also want to give big thanks to the club sponsors who support our activities like JN Chevrolet, Big Kids Candy Shop and the Embroidery Shop. We look forward to a long partnership. I would like to thank everyone for your help and ask you, the members, to please get more involved with our club. Perhaps you can volunteer to write a story about something that happen to you recently or to write an article about our club event you attended. All of you have great things to talk about at our meetings so let’s share it with everyone. Let’s work together to make our club newsletter the best one out there! Then perhaps we’ll have a chance of winning the NCM 1st place award for Club Newsletter of the year. As for the editor’s position, Jay and I (Charles) are filling in for now until we can find a qualified newsletter editor to take up the challenge. Please let us know if you’re interested in this important position. Until we see you at the next club event, please be safe and share the Aloha of the Corvette Club of Hawaii.
