Chairperson’s Chat December 2018 Yesterday I received a most welcome e-mail from the Tauranga City Council. The e-mail is so important that I set out for you in full: Good afternoon, I am the property specialist for the BOP Vintage Car Club. I have been advised by the asset manager to make contact regarding a new lease for the premises at Cliff Road. As the Long Term Plan deliberations have now been finalised we are able to offer a lease on this (sic) premises. Can you please reply and indicate if you are open in entering into a new lease and any specific conditions you may have, we would be looking at a very similar lease document as was signed previously. Any questions please contact me at the below. Thanks Robyn Scrimshaw It goes without saying the answer will be yes!!! we do wish to enter into a further lease, and to this end we discussed the subject last evening at our Club Commit- tee meeting. The committee have instructed me to respond to the Council in the affirmative, and with the only special request that the lease be for a term of ten years. This is great news for the Club after the stress in the last year or so, with the un- certainty that the Council may have wanted the site for a museum. Now that the museum issue is behind us it is welcome news that a firm lease is pending. With luck the Council will concede to our request and grant a longer term lease than the two years we have previously. I will keep you posted as to developments. After that wonderful news anything else I discuss will be an anticlimax, but I can- not let the opportunity go by without reporting on the combined branch run last Sunday. We had fifteen vehicles from our club join us for a run over Pyes Pa to Rotorua, stopping at Hamurana Reserve for morning tea. We then joined four other branches at the Steam Museum at Holdens Bay Rotorua. Altogether, with the other branches there were in excess of forty vehicles at the event. It was great to share an afternoon with members from branches close by, and to view their wonderful historic vehicles. I do hope such combined branch events are repeated on a regular basis. Next year’s event is assured, with the Tau- po Branch chairperson putting his hand up and offering to host such a run next year. Perhaps it will then be our turn in 2020. Looking forward to seeing you all at our Christmas Party on the 9 th of December, or perhaps at our New Year Day Picnic at Tuapiro Point. In the meantime, safe and happy motoring. Jim Smylie Chairperson 7
The festivities and Joy that Christmas Brings with it By Kaaren Smylie Members not only does the big Fella in the red suit descend upon us with vengeance in the month of De- cember, but don’t we start to feel brainwashed with the reminders from the retailers about Christmas festivi- ties, in my opinion it seems to happen earlier every year...or am I showing my age? For our Club not only is December another jammed pack month of events, but the January diary is filling up just as rapidly. Tuesday 4th December will be our Seniors Christmas Morning Tea at the Club rooms, and as always we make a bit of a fuss for this gathering. A little bit of Christmas cake and a wee Christmas pie, accompanied by a tipple of Sherry for those who would like it to celebrate yet another year that has been. For some of us a touch of sadness, for others a celebration of life. Two days later on Thursday 6th December we have the annual Ladies and Men Christmas Lunch. This year I decided it could be a bit of fun to have a coach trip out of town for the day. So I ran the idea past Alan Webb who embraced the suggestion. Alan then very kindly offered to organise a coach for the day, and I must tell you he has mapped out a truly fantastic outing for us, don’t be disap- pointed and miss out on this opportunity! We will leave our Club rooms at 9am and head in the direction of Thames; tell me, folks, what could be more exciting than coffee stops on the way, shopping, sight- seeing, a visit to a winery and a cheese factory topped off with a G&T’s on route coming home. After all that excitement we will arrive back at the club rooms about 5pm. For those folks who are keen and want to make a real day of it, Jim and I would love you to join us for dinner when we get back to town at a local restaurant. The fare for the bus trip is extremely reasonable at the price of $20.00 p.p! (Please see advert) Sunday 9th December our Club rooms will be in full swing for our Club Christmas Dinner & Restoration Awards. The club rooms will be open at 3pm, and if it’s a nice day please bring along your picnic chairs and tables for a bit of a get-together outside before dinner that is planned to be served at 5.30pm. This year we will have a BBQ dinner, however, can everyone please contribute a salad and a dessert towards the BBQ to share with others. Also can you please bring your own plates and cutlery, so that no one ends up trapped in the kitchen at the end of the evening washing dishes. Members if any of you have done renovations on your autos this year PLEASE enter the Restoration Awards, the more the merrier, for further information contact Chairman Jim. The following night Monday 10th December is our final Club Night for the year, come along one and all for a great social evening, the Club will be supplying the 8
supper of ham on the bone and buns…scrumptious! I was approached a couple of weeks ago to ask if our Club could visit a few of the Retirement Villages at Mount Maunganui in our autos decorated in a Christmas theme. So Wednesday 12th December its happening, a small Christmas Run to visit FOUR of the Villages at the Mount, Somervale, Pacific Coast, Ocean Shores, and Bayswater. I plan for us to meet at the Club rooms at 9am and then travel to the Mount, or for those who live at the Mount/Papamoa/Te Puke areas to assemble and meet us at the Bay Wave car park in Gloucester Road. We will then motor on to Somervale Village where a morning tea will be provided to us. At the conclusion of the morn- ing tea, we will take in our cars some of the Somervale residents as passengers for the ride to visit the other three Villages. At the conclusion of the drive-through of Villages, we will travel back to Somervale where a BBQ lunch will be provided to us for $5.00 p.p (Please see further details in the weekly BUZZ) Members, we must not forget our little people… yes, those little ones that are our future VCC members, and who are going to be driving our Historic cars in years to come. So on Sunday 16th December our lovely Linda Downey assisted by yours truly has got planned our wonderful an- nual Christmas Party for your children/grandchildren/ great-grandchildren. For the kids, Linda has organised to have sack races, wooden spoon races, giant connect 4, lollies, balloons, face painting, and many more surprises! Could you please bring for your child/children a small named gift that Santa can give to them at the party? Moving onto January and New Year’s Day, yes we are having again our annual picnic at Tuapiro Reserve. Such a beautiful place for an outing, further details for this event will be in your weekly BUZZ. The 20th January is the 7th Annual Rotorua Branch Lakefront Car Show, another great day out for mem- bers and their families and another very popular event hosted by the Rotorua Branch. Moving onto the 26th January, and once again another annual event, this time to be held in Thames the ‘Wings & Wheels’ Show. This show will be at the Thames Airfield from 10am – 3pm and is held in conjunction with the Hauraki Aeroclub and Thames Vintage Classic Car Club. It will be a static display of aircraft and vehicles; there will be food, drink, and en- tertainment available for the whole family, a ‘must not miss’ event. February 15th-17th Hawke’s Bay comes alive once again when many VCC members and friends up and down the country travel to the Bay for their annual pilgrimage to the world famous Art Deco weekend. What a fantastic opportunity for mem- bers to have their Historic cars on show. 9
Make a note in your 2019 calendar of Sunday 3rd March; the Brits Euro Car Show will be on in Auckland, further details closer to the time. And for all you Steam Punk fans out there, I just want to give you the heads-up about an exciting event happening on Saturday 16th March at the Greerton Vil- lage. The Vintage, Retro & Steam Punk Festival. Donn White and I, along with Sally Benning the Village Manager are working to- gether on this event. So put a circle around that date in your 2019 calendars as well folks. Last but not least, you would have received from me this week amongst all the other emails I have sent out the Entry Form for the North Island Club Captains Tour labeled ‘End of the Summer Wine’ that is on from the 7 – 13 March 2019. This Tour will also become our Club event that we have bi-annually called either the End or the First of the Summer Wine. I have limited the entries to 40 vehicles, and to date I have 23 vehicles registered. If you are considering coming please don't leave it too long to book, as accommoda- tion starts to become a premium as some folks are already discovering in Palmer- ston North. The Tour will start in Tauranga and will then travel to Taupo, Hawke’s Bay, Wai- pukurau, and Palmerston North to end up in Wanganui for the grand finale. At each of the destinations, the Club Captains of all the respective Branches have set runs in their areas on roads many of you would never have traveled on. Such wonderful support and help I have received from all these energetic and knowl- edgeable people Please phone me now if you would like me to send you out an entry form. In closing for this year I would like to wish each and every one of you a fantastic festive season, and to thank you once again for another year of your tremendous support. I trust I am assisting to keep you all young and vibrant with the many activities I plan for you; whether they are good, bad or different, I do think collectively as a Club we have one hell of a lot of fun! Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, good health and above all safe motoring! Yours truly, Kaaren 10

Your Klaxon Editor is Paul Beck Contact Paul at klaxoninfo@gmail.com or 07 5748482 Hi Everyone, Our final Klaxon for the year. While sometimes it gets a drag, other times it seems like only yesterday when I first started editing it. It is always interesting and chal- lenging to gather up the information and then try to put it all in words so it makes a little sense. If someone had of said to me in my college days that I would pick up a computer later in life and write, I would have said they were nuts. No way would be the reply. But then computers were still in their infancy in those days so I wouldn't have known what they were on about anyway and it was something that others who had more skills than myself would contemplate. Then so far as writing goes, I just wanted to go out and play, not sit down and our biggest excitement was when your pencil broke. I wanted to find out how things worked and how to pull them apart. Cars and boats were my thing. Sailing and speed. Woo hoo! It’s funny though how things change. I now sit down every day and as part of my ritual, check out the news. (On computer of course.) Check my emails of which the car club seem to do with great abundance and occasionally I have a little project to do, of which Klaxon plays a role in that area. It has been good and enjoyable most of the time but as Christmas looms up I do look forward to a month off and what better excuse than “the printers are closed”. A month off and then back to it again. This month has been a bit of a trial. Head office sent out an email with a small list of names which New Zealand Post rejected delivery due to incorrect addresses. Now you would think a member knows where they live and what his postal ad- dress is. Apparently not, according to NZ Post. Mail that has been happily deliv- ered over the years to an address and suddenly the address is wrong. Streets no longer exist or a post code changes and the delivery has not updated their records. What I thought was a simple exercise turned into a major problem with one ad- dress having 3 different versions and all incorrect including the phone number. Top marks to Julie for persisting on accuracy and I hope that we have arrived at the correct solution. (NZ Post too.) It’s a little bit like the misplaced dot in an email address. In the wrong place and nothing works. So as we enter the end of the year, perhaps I should say a huge thankyou to those that have contributed to Klaxon over the year. A lot of photos get taken at most events but we see very few of them. Why, I ask? Why, do they not want to share them? Thankfully Brian, Donn and Deidre buck that trend and send some in to help. Thankyou for that. Much appreciated as sometimes I do struggle for content, and a photo is a good way to express what is going on. Also to those who have contributed writeups, Thankyou. Unfortunately Alan Pram has completed his last mid week run. While I was out of town for that run it appears that it was well attended. Well done Alan and thankyou for some good times. We will have to find another way to use your tal- ents. Finally a small reminder that as from January, if you require Klaxon in printed form we must receive your subsription (see advert) to pay for it. The email version is still available free of charge. Have a great Christmas everyone and see you all next year. All for now, Paul All articles must be in writing and received PREFERABLY early in the month, the close off date being Wednesday following the committee meeting. 12
Important notice to all BOP members Notice to all members This is the last hard copy Klaxon available free of charge. If you require a hard copy please follow the below directions. Very few members have taken up the new option so far Note: It is not the intention to stop printing Klaxon, but to recover the cost of printing it. An annual subscription of $30.00 is required to meet the ongoing costs of production. Payable to the Club Treasurer before: 20th January 2019 By Mailing your payment to: The Treasurer BOP Vintage Car Club PO Box 660 Tauranga 3140 Or by Direct credit to: Westpac Bank a/c 030435 0492753 00 Please use your name as reference. As we are trying to keep things simple - no copies will be available at the front table on meeting night. All hardcopy magazines will be posted. Regrettably the change has been made necessary due to increase of printing and mailing costs and the extended delivery times we now face. Klaxon will still be free of charge to all members who receive it on Email. YOU WILL NEED TO SUBSCRIBE BEFORE 20TH JANUARY 13
Helping you with Klaxon changes - by Paul Beck January is the date for our Klaxon to be sent on line only unless you have subscribed to the PRINTED COPY VERSION. For those receiving Klaxon on line only it is very easy to print off the EVENTS PAGES AND RUN INSTRUCTIONS without printing the whole magazine. This will make a big saving of your printing costs. While many members do know how to do this, the instruction is for those that do not. Take note of which pages you would like. (The pages are numbered at the bottom) Usually the events pages are on pages 4 and 5. You may also wish to print Kaarens report usually on pages 7,8,9 HOLD DOWN THE CTRL KEY AND TAP P. Then let the CTRL key go. (Control print tells the computer that you wish to print) A menu will appear on the left and there is normally a box in the menu that says Print the whole thing (or similar wording). BELOW THAT BOX IS ANOTHER that will say page numbers or similar wording. IN THE PAGE NUMBER BOX, TYPE IN YOUR PAGE NUMBERS AND SEPARATE EACH NUMBER WITH A COMMA AND NO SPACES So it should look like this. 4,5,7,8,9 If your printer is able to print double sided TICK THE PRINT BOTH SIDES BOX Your paper size is normally A4 and normally the printer is set for that You are ready to print. PRESS PRINT. Enjoy the rest of Klaxon on line. If you want to print off consecutive pages, instead of separating the page numbers with a Comma, put a dash instead so it should look like this 4-19. The printer will print off pages 4 to 19 The instructions may differ slightly between different brands of printers or programs but most are fairly similar and should not cause you much difficulty. However should you experience difficulty. Give Paul a call 07 5748 482 14

Supercar Fast Dash by David Stafford A great Xmas present idea and one for the bucket list for all petrol heads if they haven’t already done something like this. Last Xmas I got a voucher from our family for a supercar fast dash in a Lambor- ghini Huracan at Hampton Downs which I was very excited about as I had done something similar in a Nascar at the Las Vegas speedway on our Route 66 trip last year; a fantastic experience and a really thrilling eye opener to the world of race car performance. For whatever reason I hadn’t made the trip to Hampton Downs and time was run- ning out on the year long voucher, when I thought that a gift voucher for the same experience for our son Aaron’s 40th birthday would be good idea and we could drive up together and share the experience. Accordingly on the 29th Sept we travelled up with Val and Aaron’s son Liam, for the experience and awaited our turn, as they had quite a lot of people participating in the various experiences, ranging in price from $169 for the supercar fast dash as a passenger with a professional driver, to $395 for the self drive 6 laps with a pro- fessional in the passenger seat to provide some guidance. At the end of which if you really pushed it along you might just match USA Route 66 mustang speedster Owen Goldsmith. While awaiting our turn we acquainted ourselves with some of the Lamborghini’s specs. i.e. a 5.2 litre V10 engine producing 610 hp. 0 to 100 kms in 3.2 secs. 4 wheel drive. Then it was time to suit up (We were provided with racing overalls and a crash helmet with a range of sizes to select from) and into the car I went, to be strapped in by staff and a handshake with the driver in whose hands I was putting my life. Chairman Jim please note that this car was actually equipped with a door for ac- cess, none of this feet first through the window as in the Las Vegas Nascar (much more user friendly). Out from the pit lane and on to the track we tootled and at the first bit of straight my driver asks if I am ready to go, after giving him the thumbs up he floored the accelerator and I was just driven back into the seat with the incredible acceleration, unbelievable, I have never felt anything like that before. Then the driver points out the aiming point markers on the track for entry, the apex and exit of the cor- ners. After checking that I am alright we go again and what a ride, through left and right turns, up the incline and the sharp dip and left turn and then the big sweeper leading into the front straight. What a thrill, just amazing as you go through that sweeper I could feel the car drifting a bit, but never felt that we were not in control. I guess the 4WD helps a lot. Two fantastic laps totally exhilarating, I can see why guys like Scott Dixon are hooked on the speed, expertise and thrills of racing and can’t give it up. 18
Then it was son Aaron’s turn while Val and I looked after grandson Liam, who up to then hadn’t been very happy. We think he was a bit concerned for his dads safety, as Aaron is a racing and Formula 1 fan and follows it on t.v. where I think Liam has seen what can happen crash wise. He was much happier when his dad pulled back into the pits. As Aaron said “ I can totally recommend that”. To which I absolutely concur. What a buzz, we were both still fizzing when we arrived home. Two book reviews by Paul Beck Mailman of the Birdsville Track by Tom Kruse (Well recommended by other readers) The Birdsville track in Central Australia is well known for being lonely and for twenty years Tom Kruse was the mailman responsible for delivering the mail and stock following nothing but an old Aborigine track. The track if you could call it that was between Maree and Birdsville. At times it was flooded out and there were two great sandhills to go over. He also carried a few passengers who sat on top of the load on the back and part of the deal was to lend a hand when the truck was stuck. Steel plates were carried under the deck of the truck and when he couldn’t make it over a sandhill had to lay the plates down to form a crude track until he got over the top. Usually the trip took three days each way. But it was a very hard three days. The truck was a Leyland Badger however it had an extended tray and when the diff broke got modified with a dual wheel setup off an old wrecked Thornycroft. This proved to be a very work- able solution as the old system was very prone to breaking down and snapping axels. Many of Tom’s repairs were done on the track in the outback somewhere so he became very adaptable and anything goes as long as he got to his destination. I seemed to easily connect with and follow the stories as it is a series of tales told by Tom. It finishes with the truck being restored to its original glory and doing a re-enactment of the mail run to make a film. I enjoyed the story very much and this month put on the movie on at the club Film Night. However I must say that the book has a lot more detail than the film and recommend the book to everyone. A Boot Full of Right Arms by Evan Green (also recommended by other readers) I`d give my right arm to be going with you was a saying Evan Green heard many times in the weeks before he left Australia to compete in the London – Sahara – Munich World Cup Rally. He had dozens of offers. Enough arms in fact to fill the boot of the large Leyland P76 he had chosen for the 17,000 km event. The volunteers might have been less enthusiastic had they known what lay ahead, for the rally soon crossed the boundary separating motor sport from high adventure and then went further. Crews became stranded in the desert. Some almost died of thirst. Most became lost and only one car completed the full course of this extraordinary event. While reading the book, at many times I became almost bored with fact and detail but the writer then suddenly seems to pick up again and make the reader almost immersed and feeling like they too were competing as well. The competitors in the rally must have been really focused and fiercely competitive almost to the point of death but not giving up. But this is more than just an account of a rally. It is a story of a journey through 14 countries, across some of the world’s most forbidden terrain, and of the strange places and people encoun- tered during the trip. As I said, I found the book boring in parts but compelling in other parts and if adventure with a car is your thing then maybe this is book for you. Both books are available in our club library. Happy reading. Paul 21
The Years 1987 - 1988 by Paul Beck 1987 The Edgecumbe Earthquake. While this item does not fall within the transport folio, we should remember that on the 2nd of March a few of our members were affected by this earthquake in various ways. Reflections 1988 Saw the completion of electrification of the centre section of the North Island main trunk railway line. 1988 The Tauranga Harbour Bridge was officially opened. A toll of $1 was also introduced to pay for it. The toll was dropped in 2001 after the Council had collect- ed $90 million in tolls. 1988 Lifetime drivers licences were introduced. Lifetime licences were later amend- ed with a licence with the drivers photo on it a few years later. They also now need to be renewed on the owners 75th birthday. 1988 The oil industry was deregulated resulting in immediate petrol price rises. 1988 The main highway bridge in Wairoa was damaged in the cyclone Bola event.
