                                      Greetings from DG Sue Piccolo
Together we can do so much:
First, I would like to say hats off to all Lions for their tremendous efforts and achievements of dedicated
service this year, years that passed, and the future. You are the pillar of strength on which this
organization stands. You meet our community and international needs and bring such strength and
encouragement to them. I understand how tired we can become but, hence would like you to be always
    motivated and enthusiastic.

It’s still the start of a new year and I would like all of you to keep making new beginnings, keeping in mind
previous years of learning. This year we have achieved so much and you all have done what we are about:
SERVICE.” We need to continue our motivation and show the world who and what we really do.
So many of you have already shown that you are hardworking and determined and a valuable asset to our
organization: the “Lions.” I know you all will continue these efforts with such enthusiasm and I thank you
for your perseverance and commitment to our organization.
The hurricane relief efforts surpassed everyone’s imagination. We were joined by District S and with our
combined efforts, serviced thousands of people, sending over 125,000 lbs. of items to Texas, Puerto Rico,
and gift certificates to Florida. Our relief efforts were publicized and covered on TV, in the newspapers,
and acknowledged by LCI. What a great achievement and all because of Helen Keller’s words “Alone we do
so little, together we can do so much” has proved once again to be true.
On November 8, 1st VDG Terry Whalen and Lions See Chairman 2nd VDG Jose Pastrana, and I will be
meeting with Nassau County Social Services, to join with them to start a Children’s Vision Screening
program throughout Nassau County. This will be a positive relationship, as Nassau County Social Services
would promote our organization throughout New York State. With that, we will be holding a training
session to get more Lions on board to go to the areas that need our services. Look for information about
upcoming training, which 2nd VDG Jose Pastrana will send out.
November 9 is our next open cabinet meeting and we will be saluting our veterans. Please try to attend
and show them the love and support they deserve for keeping us safe.
On December 9, the District will have the Children’s Polar Express Party. It would be great to see
everyone there to support this wonderful day that gives the homeless, abused, and challenged children an
experience they will never forget. The best and biggest party anyone has ever given them. Contact PDG
Nina Lanci from the Bellmore Lions for more information.
February 18, 2018 will be our District Convention, which will be held at the Nassau County Bar
Association. Contact 1st VDG Terry Whalen and help us “Find Waldo.”
March 25 is the Lions United Nations UN Day. Something you don’t want to miss. Tickets sell fast so make
sure you get yours as soon as they come out. Tickets will be on the LCI website.
April 22, 2018 is our First Pediatric Cancer and Diabetes Walk in Wantagh State Park. Look for more
information to follow and let’s make this a successful day. You can contact the chair Teri Resca for more
information and check out our Facebook page: Nassau County and Bermuda Lions Pediatric Cancer and
    Diabetes Walk.

DG Message Continued from page 1

The NYS Lions Convention in Rochester begins on May 4, 2018. Check out the State’s or District’s web-
    sites for more information.
There are many ways you can help and be part of our team. There is planning, coordinating, collecting of sup-
plies, taking inventory, sorting, packing and lifting of items. Whenever we have a mission, we will find some-
thing for you to do. Everyone has their own set of strengths.
IMPORTANT: Please remember to report your service on My LCI because it is important for LCI to see all that
we are contributing to our communities, and we should be proud of that. If you’re not sure how to enter the
information, please contact anyone in our cabinet and we will be happy to help you.
IMPORTANT: Dues must be paid in a timely manner. State & District dues must be paid no later than twenty
days before the State or District convention. International dues are due within 30 days of the club receiving
    the invoice.
Also, remember if you have a president that has done two terms, all your vice presidents should
move up to that position. Change is scary but it is healthy for the clubs.
These are just some of the upcoming events going on with our district; remember to look at all the emails com-
ing from CS Terri Oster with Breaking News on the district.
    Thank you and Happy Holidays,
    YIL,
    DG Sue Piccolo

                        District 20k2 Cabinet News
From the desk of the Cabinet Secretary
                                        “Seeking a Club Secretary”
One of positions in a club, which help make the club run smoothly, is that of Club Secretary.
The responsibilities of the club secretary include taking attendance, recording and disseminating minutes,
preparing meeting agendas, and assisting the president where needed. Club secretaries are responsible for
entering new member information, entering new officer data each fiscal year, entering club service
activities in a timely fashion on the LCI website. The secretaries also keep club members in the loop up-to-
date via E-mailing. They send meeting notices, minutes, flyers, notice of events, and other
pertinent information as necessary. Through the Lion Store, the club secretaries also order club supplies,
such as new member kits, Peace Poster kits, eyeglass receptacles and other items.
While these are most of the responsibilities for a club secretary. Each club’s secretarial requirements may
vary depending on the club’s individual needs. Consider taking on this position as it is a very rewarding
   job.
   Thank you,
   Terri Oster, Cabinet Secretary

                      LCIF CONTRIBUTING MEMBER
What do over 50,000 Lions have in common each year? They become Contributing Members by donating at least
US$20 to LCIF.
The Contributing Membership program is an annual program that recognizes individual donors for three levels of
support: US$20, US$50, and US$100. Contributing Membership donations are Melvin Jones Fellowship-eligible and
used to support LCIF humanitarian grant programs.
Contributions can be made by completing the Contributing Member form and mailing it to LCIF. Donations can also
be made online with a credit card. Remember, donor names are required for proper recording of MJF credits.
Clubs are awarded a 100% Member Support banner patch and chevron when every member makes a minimum
contribution of US$20. For each subsequent year of 100% Member Support, clubs receive a chevron.
For details on Contributing Membership and Support when contributions are for multiple donors, please refer to
the Contributing Member Instructions and Guidelines.
For more information, contact Donor Services at 630.203.3836 or by email, or visit http://www.lcif, go to the Ways
To Give option on the banner, and then to Contributing Member.

                 GLOBAL LEADERSHIP TEAM NEWS
                                              Be a Lion Leader

There are many leadership training opportunities available from LCI that focus on a variety of leadership
skills and management concepts, which collectively promote effective leadership.
One of these opportunities is the Lions Learning Center. It is a program designed for independent study
and is available on the Lions Clubs International website. The courses are focused on leadership and
management topics that are presented in the context with Lions activities or for use in Lions club volunteer
positions.
The courses were designed to develop more effective Lions leaders, who will help enhance Lions Club
International and further the organization’s goals. With the Lions, one of the key reasons members join is
for personal and professional growth. As a result, the Lions Learning Center provides leadership
development programs and resources that are accessible to leaders and potential leaders.
For more information on the Lions Learning Center and other leadership training opportunities, visit LCI:

                       GLOBAL SERVICE TEAM NEWS
Dear Lions,
While some of our fellow Lions were experiencing difficulties due to hurricanes and storms, you answered
the call to service. DG Sue went into action to set up relief efforts for those effected and many of you
were there to help as a club or personally. Donations of much needs supplies poured in and it was truly
amazing the Lions that turned out to assist in sorting and loading trucks, proving together we do make a
difference. What a tremendous effort by all, now is the time to follow through and be sure to report this
and all your club service on your monthly service report to LCI.
As I have received some reports of service from clubs already and I thank you but this is a reminder that I
am looking for a quarterly report on your service. If you find it easier monthly reports are welcomed also.
If I can be of any further assistance, please feel free to contact me.

Alert Team - Hurricane Disaster Relief
Nassau County and Bermuda Lions continued their disaster relief with aiding those affected by Hurricane
Maria in Puerto Rico. Lions from our district packed over 15,000 lbs. of supplies, which were shipped by
the NYPD to Puerto Rico on October 16, 2017. Collected were only those items on the list of needed
supplies. We had fourteen Lions who helped four to six hours a day during the week and six Lions from
the district on the weekend, who assisted four to six hours. The total of Lions’ Hours was approximately
   312.
After the initial shipment of supplies to Texas, another 40-foot trailer arrived and picked up fire items for
Pine Grove Fire Department, along with other items collected by Lions of District S. The truck also shipped
lunch tables and other items collected by District K2. Texas is still having major problems including people
resorting to living out of their cars or in tents.
The District sent $1,425 in gift certificates to PCC Geoff Wade (Multiple District 35) in Florida.

Greetings from the District Diabetes Chairperson...
In November 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November as National Diabetes Awareness Month.
Annually, on November 14th, World Diabetes Day is observed. The date commemorates the birthday of
Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, is credited with the discovery of insulin in 1921. (Insulin is a
hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar (glucose) from carbohydrates in the food
that you eat for energy.)
FYI - St. Joseph Hospital in Bethpage has a free event scheduled to celebrate Diabetes Awareness Month.
The "Diabetes Community Resource Event" will be Wednesday, November 15th from 12:30pm to 2:30pm.
They are celebrating by sharing Community Resources, Raising Awareness, and tips on Creating your Support
Network. They will have special guests and giveaways. For more information, please call the Diabetes
Education Center at St. Joseph Hospital (516) 520-2500. Join me there and say "Hi!"
I'm eager to hear from each club's Diabetes Chairperson as we embark on our LCI mission to improve
diabetes awareness in our District. My goal is to raise awareness about prediabetes. One in three American
adults has prediabetes, but only 10 percent of them know they have it. Prediabetes means a person's blood
sugar level is higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed with diabetes. People with
prediabetes are on the road to develop type 2 diabetes within several years, and are also at increased risk for
serious health problems, such as stroke and heart disease. There are some prediabetes risks, which you can't
control, such as age and family history. But there are things you can do to reduce your risk, such as increased
physical activity and weight loss. And making these lifestyle changes can also help to prevent or delay the
onset of type 2 diabetes. Please contact me so we can plan a program to educate people in our District on this
topic. In the meantime, for further information, check out DoIHavePrediabetes.org.
I can be reached via email at AskDrBev@aol.com or via phone at my office number (516) 378-6676.

The Lions District 20K2 Lend An Ear Foundation has been working with New York State
Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages to create a Bill that will mandate New York State insurance
companies to cover the cost of hearing aids for children and adults. In our initial meeting with the
Assemblywoman, we had an open discussion regarding the procedures on getting a Bill passed through
the Assembly and Senate. The Lend An Ear Foundation Board members actively engaged in working
with her to create a Bill that would meet the needs of all people suffering from hearing loss. On
September 1, 2017 Assemblywoman Solages along with co-sponsor Assemblyman Anthony D’Urso,
presented Bill A08628 to the Assembly. Currently the Bill is being amended with changes that were
requested by Assemblywoman Solages to provide funding for the purchase of hearing aids and hearing
aid related services for all patients regardless of their age. She is requesting to include coverage of
$3000.00 per ear/aid every two years, among other necessities to ensure that everyone suffering from
hearing loss will be able to afford hearing aids and all care related to them. The Assemblywoman has
already secured a sponsor for the Bill on the Senate level, so once the amendments are accepted and
passed in the Assembly, the Bill moves onto the Senate. Below is the link to view the current proposed
Bill:

We have also begun a petition to the New York State Governor, Assembly Speaker and Senate
Majority Leader in support of the need of this Bill. There is online petition as well as a paper petition
being circulated. To date we have 922 signatures. Below is the link to the online petition.

             MULTIPLE DISTRICT 20 LIONS
Summer Programs at Lions Camp Badger - 2018

Lions Camp Badger offers two-week long summer programs for campers with functional differences (such as intellectual disability,
autism, cerebral palsy, etc.). Campers are grouped by age (12-20 year olds in one session, 21+ in another). We welcome nonverbal
campers and encourage the use of communication devices! We also work with families whose campers may need to bring 1:1 support with
them. It is recommended these families start the registration process very early, as it takes some time to make arrangements to best meet the
needs of their campers.

One of the “perks” of our beautiful location is its close proximity to recreational and respite opportunities for families. We are just 20 minutes
from Ithaca, NY http://www.visitithaca.com/ and 35 minutes from Tioga Downs Casino https://www.tiogadowns.com/. Families from further
away can “recharge”, knowing that their camper is safe and having a great time with their friends.

Lions Camp Badger is staffed by certified special education teachers, skilled medical professionals, and dedicated, energetic college
students. Prior to camp, they have all undergone extensive training in safety, CPR/first aid, special needs, behavior management, and
communication support. Staff and volunteers who work directly with campers undergo extensive security checks per American Camping
Association guidelines. Parents may choose to receive frequent updates on their camper throughout the session. We understand how difficult
it can be to put your loved one in the hands of others, and we do everything possible to assure they receive exceptional care and attention
while they are with us.

We strive to help each camper recognize his or her individual potential, and encourage them to develop their talents and abilities to their fullest

                Centennial Service Challenge
                            CENTENNIAL VISION CHALLENGE

USED EYE GLASSES
Just a reminder, we are still on our Centennial Challenge. The used eyeglass program helps people in
third world countries see again. It is a great community service. Your club should be reporting this
program to L.C.I. If your club is not collecting used eyeglasses, you should get involved. The used
glasses are still being delivered to Lion Richard Volpe at Van Buren Truck Sales, 2257 Jericho
Turnpike, Garden City Park, New York 11040, 516-741-5060.
We need to report all the activities we are doing; if we do not, it looks as though we are not doing
anything towards the Centennial Challenge.

LIONS SEE PROGRAM
This is another great community project. It is very important for children of pre-school age to have
their eye checked. Our District has a Vision Screener and all the materials needed to do the screening.
Suzanne Reisert reported that since September, the Long Beach Lions Club did screenings in their
area. They did one with Port Washington Lions, in the community of Glen Cove and screened a total
of 207 children. They have seven more schools scheduled between now and April 2018. For more
information, contact Lion See Chairman, 2nd V.D.G. Jose Pastrana at 516-250-6801 or
valleystreamlions@me.com.

LIONS EYE BANK
From January 1, 2017 until now, the Eye Bank has had over 400 transplants. Since its inception in
1986, the Eye Bank has had 14,850 transplants. As of 1989, 435 volunteer drivers have made 13,525
trips, saving the Eye Bank one million dollars. It is very rewarding to be a volunteer driver. It is a
wonderful feeling knowing in our own little way, we are helping someone see again, and that we have
helped change their lives for the better. If you are interested in becoming a driver, contact Elliot
Krakauer at 516-433-1235 or mkrakau@verizon.net. Remember, if you are a driver making trips; be
sure to report those trips to your club secretary for the monthly activity report.

                    Centennial Service Challenge
                                     Relieving the Hunger

Thanksgiving is coming soon and most of the clubs donate turkeys to needy families. Perhaps the
biggest need for food that often goes completely overlooked is for those individuals who are low
income or have no income. Frequently those people live in shared housing, shelters, or receive
vouchers, which supplement their rent. If your church or club wants to feed people and really make a
difference, connect with a local organization that helps to house people. Once a person is housed,
they have little money for food. If a person is on disability, after they pay rent, they are often left
with a few hundred dollars for utilities, bus passes, clothes, food, and everything else. It is never
enough and most often, the person skimps on food.
Look at senior housing in your area, or contact churches or other organizations that cater to people in
need. Fill the pantries and freezers there each month. Whole turkeys are often too large for seniors
or single parents, so consider purchasing small turkey breasts or ham steaks for the holidays. Make a
difference in your community. Thank you for all you have done for the challenge!
Yours in Lionism,
Lynn Smith

Legacy Projects are visible gifts to your community that
commemorate our Centennial and create a lasting legacy of your
             service contributions.

Connect with your community and build your Lion legacy by planning a
Centennial Community Legacy Project during our Centennial
Celebration. Your Legacy Project will serve as a reminder of just how
important your club is to the community during the Centennial and
beyond. All Lions clubs around the world are encouraged to complete a
Legacy Project by June 30, 2018, so start planning yours today!

collect, inventory and load items onto the trucks destined to Texas.
On September 8-9, Lion Jill Bamberger took part in the annual Avon 39 Walk to End Breast Cancer in Santa Barbara,
California. She walked 39 miles over two days and raised $2240.
The Club donated a desk-top Vision Optical Screening Machine to District 20k2. This apparatus allows individuals with
visual impairments to be able to read items that are placed in the enlarger. The Screener has been added to the medical
items 2nd VDG Jose Pastrana maintains and are loaned out when needed.
On September 23, eight Floral Park Lions, and two Valley Stream Lions, manned a table at the Covert Avenue Street Fair
(along the Floral Park/Stewart Manor border). They had a table that encouraged Lions membership. In addition, they had
the Lend An Ear Petition, and secured several hundred signatures in favor of private insurance coverage for hearing aids
for children and adults.
Lion Lynn Smith, District Relieving the Hunger Chairperson, purchased and supplied the Our Lady of Victory Catholic
Church Food Pantry (in Floral Park) with $100 of whole chickens, chicken parts, pork chops and ground meat.

down to DG Sue and her partner in service Sal’s Cop Shop to help load the two tractor trailers that traveled nearly
  2,000 miles to Kerrville, Texas.
DG Sue Piccolo and 1st VDG Terry Whalen joined us for our September meeting at which time she inducted five new

Long Beach
The Long Beach Lions had some very interesting guest speakers recently. On September 27, we heard from Lucille Hughes
and Angelie Singla who are representatives from the Diabetes Education Center at South Nassau Communities Hospital.
They have a new program located in Baldwin starting in January for those who are diagnosed as Pre-Diabetic. They reported
that 58% of those under 60 are pre-diabetic and don’t know it! Are you one of them? Go to CDC.org and click on the
Diabetes link, which will lead you to a “Patient Risk Assessment” form as well as give a wealth of info on the condition. If
after you do the assessment it indicates you might be pre-diabetic, contact Lucille or Angelie about their program at
516-377-5367. There will be a Health Fair at SNCH on Sunday, October 22.

On October 11, Jeff Wells from Second Sight told us about the new Argus II Reginal Prostheses System. A blind
individual wears the Argus camera as you would glasses, which sends visual data to the person after a special implantation in
and around the eye. If you are interested in having Jeff speak at your club meeting, you can call him at 917-509-5871.

The Long Beach Lions are busy selling their raffles. Only 300 will be sold at $50 each. First Prize is $5,000 with seven lower
prizes. If you are interested in any raffles (great odds!), contact President Allen Schwartz at 516-322-9985.

Long Beach Lions & Oceanside Rotary will be co-hosting two basketball games December 1 at Oceanside High School
gym. The first one at 5 pm is between Long Beach High School and Oceanside High Schools’ boys’ varsity teams at 5 pm. The
second game at 7:30 pm is the same but with the girls’ varsity basketball teams from both schools. There will be raffles,
chips, & soda. Proceeds will be used for scholarships at both schools. Thanks to Rotarian Jeff Tobak & our President Allen
Schwartz, this rivalry is being resurrected!

Once again, Long Beach Lions will have a Thanksgiving Food Drive on the first two weekends in November, which will take
place at the four supermarkets in the area. The non-perishables collected by Lions will be delivered to local Outreach Centers
and Food Pantries.
Lastly, Long Beach Lions are busy with Lions SEE Vision Screenings again this year. We have about 15 different schools
(and that number is growing!) where the screenings are performed on 3-6-year-olds for amblyopia and other eye disorders.
Lions VDG Jose Pastrana and Stephanie Teff are also doing screenings in their communities. We need another camera in the
District!!

Edward Smith Mineola Lions

On October 2, 2017, The Edward Smith Mineola Lions had its annual Brian Saloy Memorial Golf Tourney. A premier event at
Wheatley Hills Golf Course. The club raised over $60,000 to benefit the Edward Smith Mineola Lions Club Programs for the
blind. Those funds will go to organizations such as the KIDS Diabetes Program at Winthrop University Hospital, Guide Dog
Foundation, Long Island Eye Bank, Long Island Bombers, The Sisters Wish Charity, and the Mineola High School Scholarship

In addition, Past President, Lion Joseph Sellitto was honored with the Melvin Jones Award for outstanding contribution to the

very proud of our accomplishments. Our club has produced six District Governors, two of which are still very ac-
    tive.
The food and turkey drive will be on November 11 from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM with the students from JFK and
Plainview. Once again, we will have a collection for turkeys on November 16 from 10:00 A.M. – 2:00 PM.
The Bethpage High School Student Council collected food on October 28 and they will help the Plainview Beth-
page Lions with preparation of food boxes on November 15 at 6:00 PM at Bethpage High School. Our Lions club
will be giving one-hundred boxes of food and turkeys to one-hundred needy families in our community. The Club
members will deliver the food on November 18 & 19
We are having a Benefit Concert for the Hurricane Victims on November 29, 2017 at Bethpage High School. The
Auditorium holds 900 people. Please help us to make this a great success! The cost of a ticket is $30. All pro-

Seaford Historical Society Museum. Hundreds of hot dogs and gallons
