PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER’S ADDRESS Address given by the Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. James Steggles, G.M.R.A.C., at the virtual Annual Provincial Meeting held on 10th April 2021. Well Brethren, the history books will show that for the last two years of the first glorious 150 years of our Province, we have had to hold Virtual Meetings to get our important business done due to this pandemic. And just about 15 months ago we all thought that Zoom was just a lens facility on our cameras. But I’m sure those same history books will also show that due to the fortitude, courage, and determination of our members the Mark Province of West Yorkshire not only survived but evolved, grew, and became even stronger. So let me start by thanking and congratulating you, the Mark Masons of this wonderful Province, for all you’ve done to make that future possible. To the Provincial, Area and Lodge Almoners for the magnificent work they’ve done this year both in their Lodges and in our communities. To our magnificent charity, The Cleeves and Whitehead Trust, for the support it’s given to our members, to local charities and to the Mark Benevolent Fund (MBF). To Lodge Charity Stewards for helping to raise the funds to make all that possible. To you and your Lodges for holding virtual meetings and keeping in touch with each other by telephone, Facebook, on our website and by many other means. Because communication really has become so important. And to my own Provincial Executive for helping to facilitate all of that – and indeed much more. I would ask all Lodges who have not been holding virtual meetings – please – now to consider doing so. Because they are doing so much to keep our Mark Family alive and well during such a difficult period. And I would also ask Lodges to use the reduction in Grand and Provincial Grand Lodge fees and dues this year, amounting to a saving of some £13/member, to ensure that Lodge subscriptions are not increased and even possibly reduced as many of our members have also been affected financially. Now just 2 weeks ago, our 2021 Grand Ranks were announced with active appointments being carried forward for John Maxwell, G.S.D. and Edward Wilkinson, G.Stwd. And with New First Appointments for: Mark Holland of Haywra 525 to P.A.G.D.C. Alex Geddes of Vulcan 1191 to P.A.G.D.C. Geoff Kendall of Vulcan 1191 to P.A.G.Swd.B. Gerald Wilde of Gothic 1018 to P.G.St.B. And to celebrate the Centenary of Lightcliffe 715, Nick Rowland to P.G.St.B.
And Promotions for: Duncan Smith of Integrity 110 to P.G.J.O. David Hymas of Wharfedale 1027 to P.G.S.D. Ian Smith of Danum 398 to P.G.J.D. I do congratulate them all. And I also congratulate our 2 new Provincial Wardens, Andrew Johnson and Ian Truswell and the rest of the Provincial Team who have been appointed, or re-appointed, today. Looking to the future, which is certainly looking much brighter now for us all, there’ll be a great deal of business to do when we resume our meetings later this year. We must do that cautiously with no one feeling obliged to attend until they personally feel safe to do so. And to that end I will not be asking the Provincial or Charity Representatives to attend your Lodge Installation Meetings formally until at least the end of the year. And we need to avoid clashes of our meetings and events wherever possible and spread events requiring a Provincial involvement out over several months. So please discuss any plans you have with the Provincial Grand Secretary. And please be patient if we can’t fit you in on your first proposed date. The most important Provincial event this year will, of course, be our Sesquicentenary Celebration on 23rd October. It will be an event which only happens once in several lifetimes and will be a spectacle you will not want to miss. The Pro Grand Master and the Deputy and assistant Grand Masters are all attending, and the Worshipful Master of every Mark Lodge in the Province will be involved in the ceremony. So please make sure your Worshipful Master is free on that day. And I would like to ask everyone attending, if possible, to wear our beautiful new Sesquicentenary Jewel, which will showcase the Province and add to the spectacle and pageantry of the event. It really is going to be a super day. And when we do start to meet again, we know we have at least 29 candidates waiting to join our Lodges. I can’t stress strongly enough the importance of keeping I touch with them and to welcome them properly when the time is right. So perhaps it is now the time to start looking at your ritual books again. And finally, this last 12 months has had a severe impact on both The Cleeves and Whitehead Trust and our MBF Festival. With Lodges not meeting and Festival events cancelled, income for both has effectively dried up whilst their excellent work and outlay continue. If we want that still to continue, we need to generate some income, so please look at starting or increasing a Standing Order to the Trust or releasing any money in your Lodge Charity Accounts which can be sent to the Festival. It will all be gratefully received and very faithfully applied. So Brethren, thank you so much for attending this meeting today and, as always, for your magnificent support. It is really appreciated. I look forward to seeing you all again soon in your Lodges very soon now but in the meantime my very best wishes. Mark Well, and until we meet again – God Bless you all.
The Sesquicentenary of the West Yorkshire Province of Mark Master Masons In 1856 a new sovereign body was formed, to rule over the Mark: The Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of England and Wales. It issued its own warrants for new Mark Lodges, but a year later, still only had six Lodges on its roll. Gradually, however, the Grand Lodge persuaded some of the old, independent Mark Lodges to come under its banner, and adopt the new ritual. In May 1862, the Mark Masons in the Lodge of Prince George joined the Mark Grand Lodge, as Prince Edward Mark Lodge No. 14. Not long after Mark Grand Lodge was formed, the Grand Master, Lord Leigh, expressed his wish that, where there were three lodges in a county, they should be organised into a Province. He constituted the first Mark Provinces in 1857: by 1876 there were 14. The Province of West Yorkshire was inaugurated in Halifax on Wednesday 2nd August 1871, at an emergency meeting of Fearnley Lodge held at the Freemasons’ Hall, Halifax. There were six Lodges on the roll: Prince Edward, Britannia, Fearnley, Integrity, Copley and Portal. At the 50th anniversary of Mark Grand Lodge in 1906, the Pro Grand Master, the Earl of Euston, said “Let us keep the degree in all honour and respect, so that people can turn around and say ‘Look at the Mark Degree, how it is governed, how amicable they are, and how prosperous and successful they are, and how harmony dwells amongst them’” 1 Surely these words are as true today as they were then, and true not just of Mark Masonry in general, but of this the Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of West Yorkshire in particular. As we move forward in time to May 2021 we are beginning to emerge from a national suspension of all Masonic activity, our Grand rulers have devolved the responsibility for lifting that suspension to the Provincial Grand Masters across the country. Our Provincial Grand Master R.W.Bro. James Steggles G.M.R.A.C. has decided to keep West Yorkshire Mark Masons in suspension until the Government lift all restrictions put in place to beat the Covid -19 Pandemic which has gripped the world for over 14 months, we are optimistic that this will happen on the 21st June 2021. Mindful of the fact that the Government, guided by scientific facts could delay the lifting of all restrictions the Provincial Grand Master elected to hold the celebration meeting for the Provincial Sesquicentenary on Saturday 23rd October 2021 at Bradford Grammar school. Hopefully by that date we will all be getting used to “the new normal way of life” post the Covid – 19 pandemic. The Sesquicentenary Celebration meeting will be full of Pageantry during which Provincial and Lodge Banners will be paraded before the assembled brethren. Also, the Provincial Grand Master has several other special surprises up his sleeve for the brethren of the Province. We will be honoured by the Presence of the Pro Grand Master, the Deputy Grand Master, the Assistant Grand Master, the Grand Secretary and the Grand Director of Ceremonies. An incredibly special Sesquicentenary Jewel has been designed to commemorate the occasion. This Jewel has been warmly endorsed by Mark Grand Lodge who have given permission for every member of this province from newly advanced members through to Grand Lodge Officers to wear this Jewel during our Mark Meetings in perpetuity, within the boundaries of our Province. At the Sesquicentenary Celebration meeting the Provincial Grand Master has already decreed that no masonic breast jewels of any kind should be worn other than the Sesquicentenary Jewel. He hopes that every person attending will wear this jewel to show how proud they are to be West Yorkshire Mark Masons and to honour the memory of all the brethren who have gone before, “Marking Well” and laying the foundation stones of our wonderful Province. To purchase your jewel CLICK HERE and fill out the interactive order form. V.W.Bro. Alan Oldfield, P.G.J.O, Deputy Provincial Grand Master

THE CLEEVES AND WHITEHEAD TRUST In 2005 the West Yorkshire Province’s principal charities were the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust (named after two long-serving Provincial Grand Masters Frederick Cleeves and Carl Whitehead) and the West Yorkshire Mark Benevolent Fund which represented the national charity. Both had separate Trustees and funds and after due consultation it was agreed to merge the two under the title of The Cleeves and Whitehead Trust. Confirmation of this arrangement was given shortly afterwards by the Charity Commission along with the registration Charity Reg. No. 223903. The Trust thus became the one charitable body of the West Yorkshire Province of Mark Master Masons with specific objectives. These objectives were and still are:- 1. The relief of past and present Mark Master Masons of West Yorkshire and their families and dependants who are in need, hardship or distress and 2. The support of such charities, charitable institutions and charitable purposes as the Trustees see fit. The Trust relies solely on the generosity of the Mark Master Masons of West Yorkshire for funding and many of the charities and worthy causes it supports involves the care and welfare of children in the West Yorkshire Province. Your continued financial support is vital to our maintaining the high standards set in providing this charitable service. The Trust also provides an annual, full board basis, holiday for up to 45 Mark Masons, widows and dependants at Lytham St Annes under the supervision of the Provincial Almoner and the Welfare Officers and organizes and funds two very popular Almoners Lunches, each of which is attended by some 170 to 185 elderly Brethren, widows and dependants every year. In addition, the Trust gives financial support to our national charity, The Mark Benevolent Fund (MBF), to enable it to fund larger projects on a national and global basis and is now engaged in supporting the Province with our MBF Festival scheduled for 2023. The Board of the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust consists of 8 Trustees: Geoff Kendall, Chairman; Philip Drury; David Hymas; Rodney Toulson; John F.Clough; Tony Brailsford; Alan Pendleton and Jim Stanley, along with the assistance of the Secretary Jim Reynolds, Treasurer Philip Oldfield, Provincial Almoner Paul Leach and the C.H.O.I.C.E.S. Care and Support Officers along with our seven Charity Representatives. Everyone who works for and with the Trust does do on a voluntary basis and the Trustees are proud to acknowledge that we are never short of helping hands. CHAIRMAN OF THE TRUSTEES REPORT 2021 Brother President, Ladies and Brethren, this report covers from the period from the 8th March 2020 to the 12th March 2021. Since our last AGM in March 2020, we have tried to endure an almost continuous lockdown for the rest of 2020 and the whole of 2021 to date. In all that time, the Trustees and their dedicated Support Officers, whilst not being able to visit our members in need of pastoral care, have continued to support them via phone and video conferencing.
During the accounting period of 1st September 2019 to 31st August 2020 grants in the sum of £29,159 were awarded to dependants seeking the Trust’s assistance, whilst in the same period £24,313 was distributed to charities and worthy causes within the Province mainly related to work involved in fighting Covid-19. The Mark Benevolent Fund (MBF) received £69,702 plus Mark funds of £7,500, totalling £77,202, form the Trust. In comparison the Province received, in the past six months alone, a total of nearly £91,000 from the MBF in support of local community projects equating to almost 10% of the MBF’s total expenditure for England and Wales for 2020. The Trust is also committed to the support of our Province’s Festival scheduled for 2023 and the Trustees are grateful for the wise management of our investments by W.Bro. Geoff Kendall to ensure that this will be achieved. But as you can see from the Trust’s Report for the year ending 31st August 2020, now posted on our Provincial Website, our deficit for that period is around £90,000. What is now needed in answer to that deficit is a stimulus in donations. To this end the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust and the Festival Committee have joined together to encourage an improved level of donations. Our Charity Representatives and Lodge Charity Stewards are working together to ask all members to consider regular donations to the Trust and the Festival. A well-tried method for raising funds is that of using Standing Orders as a means of providing a regular income. It doesn’t matter how much the donation is for, every little helps, and it provides us with that steady flow of much needed cash. Another initiative the Trust has adopted is one offered by Amazon. Amazon Smile is an Amazon website whereby if you purchase any goods through Amazon they will donate 0.5% of the purchase price to a charity of your choice. If you don’t have an account with Amazon you will be asked to open one at no cost to yourself or with any commitment. You will then be invited to choose a charity which, hopefully, will be the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust (the 2023 Festival is not a charity). All you need to do then is click on smile.amazon.com and you will be thanked for your donation. All donations received by the Trust in this way will be forwarded to the Festival so it is worthwhile asking family and friends who use this method of buying to sign up as well. Please give this your serious consideration. The scheme doesn’t cost you anything extra and could well prove to be a good source of income for the Festival and, after 2023, the Trust. Still looking to the future, the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust is hoping to hold its annual holiday at Lytham St Annes from the 19th September for six days dependent, of course, on whether the lockdown and the vaccination programme have had a positive effect on the pandemic. We are also arranging to hold one of our Almoners Lunches in November and we have plans for three further lunches in 2022. In conclusion I would like to thank all the Trustees and Officers associated with the Trust for the hard work all of them have put in during this difficult past 12 months. I now stand down as Chairman of the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust, handing over the reins to W.Bro. Geoff Kendall for the next three years and I can honestly say that I have thoroughly enjoyed my three years as its Chairman. It has been a privilege. I am proud to have been part of a dedicated team who have worked tirelessly to ensure that the high standards set by our predecessors have been maintained and indeed improved upon. Finally, my sincere thanks to all of you, Brethren, for the valued support you give to the Trust year in, year out and to all of you who have read this report to the very end. Well done and thank you. Sincerely and fraternally W.Bro. Jim Stanley J.P., P.G.S.D., Prov.G.Ch.Stwd. Chairman of The Cleeves and Whitehead Trust

PROVINCIAL ALMONER’S UPDATE – SUMMER 2021 2020 A year to remember !!!! or a year to forget ???? My predominant message for the last fifteen months or so has been simply “phone calls, phone calls, phone calls.” Never in our history has the simple telephone call been more important. Even now with some light shining at the end of our tunnel and with visiting once again on the horizon, I still hold the opinion that a caring, concerned phone call is of tremendous value. I do urge each and all in our Province, even as matters improve, to maintain the high level of calls to our members and not to let the level of calls drop. I would again thank all our Almoners, both official and unofficial, for their monumental efforts to get our members through the most trying of years that many of us can remember. Our lonely, aged and unwell members have expressed to me on numerous occasions just how much the phone ringing means to them as well as how much they relish our masonic resumption. These calls have simply reminded our membership that they are still treasured members of our Province and that despite everything going on they have not been forgotten. Such calls and support are what has helped them through this long, lonely ordeal. These are their words, not mine. We have had many demands on both our time and our finances to help people in need. The pandemic has had a negative effect on many lives in so many ways. It is pleasing to be able to say that your Province in the form of The Cleeves and Whitehead Trust has responded swiftly and positively to the vast majority of cases. We have, when required, referred cases to the Mark Benevolent Fund who have again supported positively. I must inform you of the new Almoner Resource which is now on our website and I would urge everyone to visit it, as it has much information and advice on many aspects of modern day living as well as advice specifically as to Almoners’ and our membership. It is new and it is a wonderful asset. I look forward to masonic resumption which again will include the Almoners Lunches and the Annual Holiday, events that have been missed by our membership and which are fondly being looked forward to with great relish. We should be proud of these regular events and acknowledge just what they put into our members’ lives. I would ask all Mark Masons to work hard upon resumption and assist our members with whatever is required to make their resumption as easy as possible. There may be problems which arise due to the passage of time in lockdown but with thought and goodwill we can get all our members back into their Mark family. I once again thank everyone in the province for the kindness and consideration shown to one another……long may it continue. Until we meet again…..best wishes to all. Sincerely and fraternally. Paul Leach Provincial Grand Almoner

WEST YORKSHIRE MBF FESTIVAL 2023 Brethren, we are now within two years of the end of the West Yorkshire Mark Benevolent Fund Festival and I thank you all for your support over the past years. It may have been a new Standing order to the Cleeves and Whitehead trust, support of a Lodge fund-raising event or a donation to the events on our website. Every little bit of help counts. We have more to do and we need to support our wonderful charities every way we can. I make no apologies for continually speaking about fund raising. How else do we support the MBF, enabling them to continue providing funds for worthy causes. Many of these are in our own Province. Many are close to our hearts. All of them deserve our charitable support, the latest being the £1,000 per Lodge to the Hospices of West Yorkshire, a total of £44,000. The clock is ticking even louder these days – two years to go – two years to fulfil the dream of our Provincial Grand Master that we should become a Grand Patron Gold province – two years to show him our support – thirty five years until the next one. The only way the MBF receives funds is by each province taking it in turn to hold a Festival so let us enjoy ours for the next two years. The MC² Cycle Challenge has had to be put back because of the Covid situation but I am assured that it will still take place, probably next year. So we have removed the TotalGiving page for this event. But don’t be downhearted, Brethren. It will be back in the Autumn with an excellent chance for you to show your support for the MC² team led by W.Bro. Rod Dyer. For the last few months, the MC² Cycle Challenge has been replaced by “The Big Bike Ride”. On 19th August 2021 W.Bro. Frank Milner sets out to conquor 1,732 miles from Portsmouth to John O’Groats and back. Good luck Frank and thanks to all who are sponsoring him on his exciting fund-raising event with The Widow’s Sons. As we resume our Lodge meetings ready for the Autumn sessions, it will have been nearly 18 months since we have been in each other’s company – 18 months since we did any ritual or shared a Festive Board. How enjoyable will that be? But it’s also 18 months since many of us thought about fund-raising for our Festival. Our Charity Stewards will be active in promoting raffles, lunches and other activities. Why not give your Charity Steward some assistance by suggesting fun activities for your Lodge. No matter how big or small, every little counts. Spread the news to your local Lodges for extra support. If you need some support or ideas please ask your local Provincial Charity Representative for assistance.
The Festival Committee is here to help you. Everyone can support the Festival in their own way. The Festival Committee have been working over the past 18 months by promoting events on the Provincial website and Facebook. We realise that not everyone has access to these facilities but it has been the only way we have been able to keep going. The latest one is the Virtual Walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats. Taking place on September 21 st, everyone can join in, walk a few miles, walk many miles, it’s your choice and it builds up the total distance. If we get there we can always walk back. See the website and circulars for information. As I said at the beginning, we are now in the last two years of the Festival. We must be ready to launch in twelve months’ time. With booking forms for the Gala Weekend in 2023, hotel bookings and organised trips we are getting ready to welcome our Grand Rulers and visitors from other Provinces to show them what West Yorkshire is about and to entertain them. We will need your help and your presence at the Gala Weekend. How? What is it all about? What do you have to do? What is expected of me? Answers to all of these will be distributed throughout this coming Masonic year. Have a look at the West Yorkshire Festival promotion video on the website or at your Zoom meetings which answer some of your questions. Friday 30th June and Saturday 1st July 2023 As always, the Festival Committee is here to assist you in your events so please contact me if we can help. V.W.Bro. Richard Puttrell Festival Chairman
