Little Penguin Viewing
While Little Penguins may be seen in many places along our coastline, we recommend sending
visitors and locals to the dedicated viewing areas at Lillico Beach and Burnie to see them. This is
to ensure we protect the Little Penguins and their habitat. Viewing is free although a box for
donations is provided and all funds received are spent on the conservation area. It is Parks and
Wildlife policy that only the guides are to use torches, and these are to be red light only. This is to
reduce the disturbance of the Penguins and of other visitors. No flash photography is allowed as
this can have serious consequences for the penguins, especially if they are feeding chicks. Volunteer guides from the
Friends of Lillico Penguins group are rostered at the Lillico Beach viewing platform every evening during the summer
breeding season (late September to early April). They are there to assist visitors and to minimise disturbance to the
penguins. The Lillico Beach viewing platform is located at the eastern end of the beach, at the foot of Don Hill. From
October to March Friends of Burnie Penguins offer free Penguin interpretation tours. Go to the Burnie Little Penguin
Observation Centre about one hour after dusk (located on the western end of West Beach linked to the city via a beach
boardwalk).

Ulverstone Cultural Precinct Update
At the January meeting, the Council approved the construction
tender award to Fairbrothers and it is now full steam ahead with
the final detailed design underway for this flagship project.
The Ulverstone Cultural Precinct will incorporate a multi-
faceted community facility that will include a revitalised site for
the Ulverstone History Museum and Research Library, a
regional art gallery, science centre and planetarium, Visitor
Information Centre, café and special purpose workshop spaces
suitable for woodcraft and other crafts.
It will be a tourist destination offering a range of visitor
experiences for local, regional, intrastate, interstate and
international visitors.
Additionally, the Ulverstone Cultural Precinct will have an education focus, combining both arts and culture and science
and technology. The new public spaces will also provide an engaging community space for people to visit and recreate.
You will start to see activity at the site with the demolition of the current building and construction will run through this
year with the opening of the new Ulverstone Cultural Precinct in 2021. We look forward to sharing progress with you as
we start this exciting year.

Sun 29 Neighbour Day - Neighbour Day is looking to flip the loneliness discussion to get Australians
to focus instead on the importance of belonging – to start people thinking about how they can put
their energy into creating positive and meaningful social connections with people outside of their
normal groups and relationships. These social connections might be one-off moments, or regular
and lasting interactions that create one to one relationships or become the starting point for an
ongoing group. What do you have planned for Neighbour Day on Sunday 29 March? Good
relationships with others can and do change communities. Connecting with others also makes
us feel better as it helps prevent loneliness, isolation and depression. www.neighbourday.org
