FROM THE DESK OF FR. MARK Fr. Mark Guzman, Pastor (253) 851-8850 • frmark@stnicholascc.org O ur readings today remind us of the great privilege we have in calling ourselves children and disciples of the Most High God. The First Reading from Isaiah describes a vision of the prophet in which angels surround the Lord. They proclaim, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory!” Our God invites us to such deep intimacy and friendship with Him that we sometimes can forget just how majestic and unspeakably holy He truly is. While we can approach Him with the confidence of a child before his father, we must also remember the deep reverence and awe that we owe to Him. This sense of awe and reverence should motivate us to deepen our discipleship way of life as well. As we contemplate the holiness of God, we come to a heightened awareness of what a “Our God invites privilege it is that He has chosen to include us in His work of spreading the Gospel to others through the grateful sharing of the gifts He has given us. We can make the words of the us to such deep prophet Isaiah our own: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send” Who will intimacy and go for us? Here I am, I said, send me!” friendship with The theme of awe before God continues in the Gospel passage from Luke, where we again see Him that we the juxtaposition of a God who is so near to us, yet who is altogether holy and powerful. In this sometimes can passage we find Jesus preaching to a crowd who is pressing in on Him to listen. (What an forget just how inspiring image! Do we “press in” as we listen to the readings proclaimed in Mass with this same sense of wonder and urgency?) In response, Jesus uses very ordinary means so that the crowd majestic and can hear Him. He simply gets into one of the nearby boats belonging to Simon so that His voice unspeakably holy will better carry over the water. He finishes speaking and then tells Simon the fisherman to lower his nets for a catch. Simon is skeptical about this instruction but obeys, putting his fishing He truly is.” talents to use as Jesus asks. The result is a catch of fish beyond Simon’s wildest imaginings. Overwhelmed, he fell at Jesus’ knees, “for astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him.” When we truly embrace a discipleship way of life, putting our talents, time and treasure at the service of the most High God, we, too, will be astonished at what God will do. Our lives may take a direction beyond our wildest imaginings. But just as Jesus reassured Simon, “Be not afraid,” He reassures us, too. We need not fear a stewardship way of life. Rather, we should embrace the adventure it presents us and prepare to be astonished by what our awesome God will do. “Here I am Lord, send me!” Yours in Christ, Fr. Mark Guzman, Pastor Catholic Stewardship, Inc. FEBRUARY 10, 2019 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 4

Cyril (827-869) and Methodius (815-884) were brothers born in Thessalonica (Greece), in the ninth century and are known as the “apostles to the Slaves.” Cyril was a scholar and linguist, and Methodius was a monk. As part of their work, they translated some of the Scriptures into Old Slavonic and devised a liturgy in that language. Shortly before his death, Cyril became a monk; Methodius continued the mission alone and later was made an archbishop. 2019 Sourcebook Pg. 85 FEBRUARY 10, 2019 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 5

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR Get to know the members of our parish family! Would you like to be interviewed? Or would you like to nominate someone to be featured? For more information, contact Margaret Betts: margaret@stnicholascc.org STEPHANIE KILMER Tell us a little about yourself and your family. I grew up in a big Catholic family in University Place and went to St. Charles all the way through elementary school, then on to Curtis High School. My extended family is huge. I think we are up to fourteen great-grandchildren. My grandma is one of twelve kids, and my mom is one of six, so we always have big parties. My Dad is a fraternal twin and my husband is an identical twin. We have one son and fraternal twins, and all three attend school here. I have been a teacher for eleven years, and am in my second year teaching third grade at St. Nicholas. Did you always know you wanted to be a teacher? I did! Ever since I was a kid, I knew it’s what I wanted to do, and I never wavered from it. I remember sitting in my third grade class being absolutely enamored with my teacher. I wanted to do that for kids myself someday. I received my B.A. in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Reading from Central Washington University. In the spring of my senior year, I was offered a job to teach at Visitation Catholic School in Tacoma, which had been my grandmother’s parish growing up! I taught first grade there for six years, then I came to St. Nicholas and taught first grade for two years. We had our babies and I stayed home for two years. Then I came back part-time to teach music for two years, before transitioning last year to teaching third grade. Tell us a little about your classroom. What are some of your goals for your students? Fostering a “growth mindset” is really important to me. I try to tell my kids, “There isn’t anything you can’t do. There are only things you can’t do yet!” I work really hard at teaching through a positive approach. I generally try not to limit their education to just sitting at a desk and listening to me talk! I try to make a lot of activities based around movement and games and interaction, to keep their days interesting. I want them to have a genuine love of learning. They also have standing desks, which helps so much with their attentiveness. Students’ favorite part of third grade is participating in a “classroom economy.” We use a house system, similar to Harry Potter, with four houses: “Animo” (Courage), “Amicus” (Kindness), “Quantum” (Respect), and “Integritas” (Integrity). Students pay a monthly rent for their space in our classroom and earn money for their houses through a points system. At the end of the week, they get to shop in our classroom store for treats and prizes. They earn bonus points by living out a list of rules called the “Essential 36.” This is a list of life skills designed to help build kids’ character. A few examples from the list include; “Always say ‘thank you’ when given something,” or “Always make eye contact when someone is speaking,” or “If you win, do not brag. If you lose, do not show anger” or “Stand up for what you believe in.” Any time I witness kids living out these Christian behaviors, they earn extra points. At this age, they are so motived by earning! I see the difference it makes in them throughout the year. They learn so many lessons in selflessness, integrity, and personal responsibility. We want to help form kids to succeed in life. You are a parishioner, a school parent, and the third grade teacher at our school. What is it like balancing all of those roles? It took me time to come to the life-work balance I have now. Two months before our twins were born, my husband started a new job, which I was really grateful for, because it allowed me to stay home. But he immediately had to travel a lot, which was really hard for me. All of my life, all I wanted to do was stay home and raise my family. And then I actually stayed home, with three kids under three, and I thought “Oh my gosh, I can’t do this!” I was dumbfounded. I felt so guilty about that! I kept thinking, “What is wrong with me? This is all I ever wanted. My kids are my whole life, but I miss my job.” It surprised me so much, and took me a long time to realize that God was calling me to a different lifestyle than what I’d had in my head. I prayed about it, and over time, I realized that working and raising our kids were both paths to holiness. Working makes me a better mom, and being a mom makes me a better teacher. What do you love most about the school? I love that faith isn’t limited just to religion class, it’s just a natural a part of every subject here at St. Nicholas, which is so different from what I grew up with. Teachers and families are so proud to be Catholic. Catholic school is something I always knew I wanted for my kids, but early on, it FEBRUARY 10, 2019 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 10
was hard to convince my husband, who hadn’t gone through Catholic education, that it was worth the cost. But when we looked at the monthly cost compared to daycare, we realized how affordable Catholic school really was. We felt so drawn to it, and we couldn’t deny the call. It has been worth every cent. There has never been a single day where they didn’t want to go to school. Never. It’s incredible. They are so happy, and they are thriving. The students cheer each other on, and they are there for each other. They’re just such nice kids, who come from genuinely nice families. That’s not to say it’s without dramas, but it’s exactly the kind of environment we wanted for our family. Do you have any special devotions? At the beginning of this school year, Mr. Reyes gave all of us teachers pictures of Our Lady, Untier of Knots. I had never seen that image before, but I loved it. It reminded of Mary’s maternal love for us. She is just up in Heaven, being a mom, taking care of us. She takes all our problem and hands them to Jesus. Recently, I have fallen in love with praying the Rosary, which is new for me. I really only started praying the Rosary regularly last year when I started teaching the third graders how to pray it. I was honestly intimidated by it at the time. It seemed so long! But the more I did it, the more I loved it. We now pray a decade of the Rosary every day in class. The students know all the Mysteries and all the prayers that go with it by heart. The Glorious Mysteries are my favorite to reflect on, especially Our Lady’s Assumption and Coronation. It shows me just how much Jesus adored his mother and how much she adored Him, which is something I hope I am instilling in my family, my sons especially. I want them to always know how important family is. When you really delve into the connection between Mary and Jesus, it makes you think: WOW. This is what I have with my kids! God gave me the gift of motherhood to better understand Himself, and His love. Really what changed everything for me was this past October, when our school had a prayer gathering with a statue of Our Lady of Fatima, blessed by Pope Francis. It was the most powerful, spiritual experience I’ve ever had. I got down to the assembly, and I instantly started crying. I cried through the entire Rosary that we prayed as a school. I was a mess! All the kids were asking, “Are you okay Mrs. Kilmer?” I had to tell them that I was crying tears of joy! I was just so moved by Mary’s motherly love. I had this uncontrollable, undeniable connection to Our Lady, and since then, I have prayed the Rosary every single day. Who are some of your favorite saints? I love Mother Teresa. I feel like I learn so much from her about how to be a better mom. I especially love her saying, “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.” When I first came across that quote, it didn’t make a lot of sense to me, because I wasn’t a mom yet. But now, my family is the most important thing to me. When you ask what I like to do in my free time, I’ll tell you that I basically just want to be with my family! The way Mother Teresa treated every person like her own child is so inspiring. We’ve been given the huge responsibility by God of raising these little souls, and we are going to present them to the world someday. We have to do our best to teach them how to love and be kind and how to know the difference between right and wrong. I also love St. Philip Neri, because he is the patron saint of joy. I try to find joy in everything I do. It’s not always easy, but he helps! What do you like to do for fun? I love reading, and read a lot with my kids at home. Everything is kind of centered around our kids because I feel like we only get them for so long. It makes me anxious thinking about them growing up! I just want to soak up every moment I can with them when they’re little. That quote, “The days are long, but the years are short” could not be more true. My extended family owns a property out at Vaughan Bay and we spend just about every weekend there in the summer. Just being together with all the kids and cousins running around is just so much fun. A lot of our time is spent right now with the dog we got for Christmas - “Gus” - an Australian Labradoodle. He is failing puppy school right now, because he’s too social… but we love him! He has the best temperament, which is wonderful for our kids. They’re at the perfect age to take care of him and play with him. He wears them out, and they wear him out! What is the most important life-lesson you want to teach your own children, and your students? In my classroom I have a big sign that says, “You are God’s masterpiece.” I want our kids to know that God has plans for their lives, and I want to encourage our kids to stay close to Him. I grew up in a generation where God was presented as all “sunshine and rainbows,” but there wasn’t a whole lot of depth. That’s the way it was in school for me, growing up. We went to Mass and prayed before meals, but my faith was sort of external for me until I became an adult. God was always there, but I never really understood how closely. It wasn’t until I had my own family and got more involved in the church and the school that my faith transformed. I hope that raising our kids in this community will help them all through their lives. FEBRUARY 10, 2019 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 11
