2 SUMMER INSTITUTE 2018 LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY FROM RABBI JOSHUA FRANKLIN As the summer season in the Hamptons begins, so too does our Summer Institute. For over a decade, the Summer Institute has been a staple of living Jewishly in the Hamptons over the summer. From Shabbat on the Beach, to musical guests, to concerts, to Scholars-In-Residence, to our new Author’s Studio, the Summer Institute helps make our community a Jewish spiritual and cultural oasis in the Hamptons. Deepen your connection to Judaism, Jewish life, and our community by diving into our Summer Institute programming. You’ll find that the Jewish Center is a beacon for Jewish experiences in the Hamptons. In recognizing that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel, you’ll find that our Summer Institute’s offerings focus on Israel. We are a community beyond our own walls, connected to Israelis and our homeland in Israel. To this end, it’s our hope that the Jewish Center will be a forum for discussion on Israel, as well as a center for Israeli music and culture. In our catalogue, you’ll find select events with an Israeli flag to indicate content related to Israel. Let the Jewish Center of the Hamptons be your community center, your center for prayer, learning, music, social action, Israel, and spirituality. And let the Summer Institute enrich your summer in the Hamptons. Come find your center, here! L' Shalom, R abbi Joshua Franklin FIND YOUR CENTER, HERE. WWW.JCOH.ORG
SUMMER INSTITUTE 2018 3 WHO'S NEW AT THE JCOH? DR. CINDY DOLGIN | EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR I am so happy to have recently relocated to the East End to become Executive Director of the Jewish Center of the Hamptons. I look forward to directing this unique anchor institution of Jewish life to meet and enhance the spiritual, intellectual and social needs of our members and the surrounding community. My entire adult life has been dedicated to working on behalf of the Jewish people, most recently, as the Head of School and CEO of the Schechter School of Long Island. I bring to JCOH strong management acumen, a deep passion for Jewish life and culture, a love and appreciation for Israel and all people, and a wonderful husband named Moti. DIANE WIENER | DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Have we met? I have had the privilege of meeting many of you at services, events and programs. We have developed meaningful relationships during these past eight years as I served the Jewish Center of the Hamptons as Executive Director. These connections have blessed my life and enhanced the sense of community that is the foundation of our congregation. As I transition to my new role as Director of Development, I am honored to receive the title of Executive Director Emerita. I will continue to serve our synagogue with the same commitment and devotion as I have as Executive Director, as we work together to strengthen the JCOH. If we have not met, let’s be sure to get together in the near future. DR. JOEL HOFFMAN | INTERIM DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION It was clear from my first visit that JCOH is infused with an energetic joy and a commitment to quality education, so I'm thrilled to be joining the team this year as Interim Director of Education. I'm particularly looking forward to deepening the children's Sunday experience, and to exploring other avenues of integrating them, and their families, into temple life. After all, the synagogue provides a unique opportunity to instill an enriching and long-lasting connection to Judaism. It's a privilege to play a role in making the most of that sacred opportunity. ARIEL MILAN-POLISAR | SUMMER RABBINIC INTERN I'm so excited to be joining the JCOH community as the rabbinic intern this summer! I grew up in Irvington, New York and spent 13 summers as a camper and staff member at URJ Eisner Camp in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. After graduating from Brandeis University with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, I worked as a youth engagement professional at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley, Massachusetts. I am currently going into my third year as a rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Outside of school, I spend my time baking, seeing as many Broadway shows as possible, and looking at cute dogs and babies on Instagram. Graciously sponsored by Morris Kramer and Lenny Ackerman. 14 SUMMER INSTITUTE 2018 THURSDAY NIGHT AUTHORS STUDIO Graciously sponsored by Jonathan and Lizzie Tisch and Paul Brennan. JOHN LELAND | HAPPINESS IS A CHOICE YOU MAKE THURSDAY, JULY 5 | 7:00pm A New York Times Bestseller, Happiness Is a Choice You Make: Lessons from a Year Among the Oldest Old is an enduring collection of lessons that emphasizes the extraordinary influence we wield over the quality of our lives. With humility, heart, and wit, Leland has crafted a sophisticated reflection on how to “live better”—informed by those who have mastered the art. An extraordinary look at what it means to grow old and a heartening guide to well-being, Happiness Is a Choice You Make weaves together the wisdom of six New Yorkers who number among the “oldest old”— those eighty-five and up. ALAN ZWEIBEL | FOR THIS WE LEFT EGYPT? THURSDAY, JULY 12 | 7:00pm If you’ve ever suffered through a Seder, you’re well aware of the fact that the entire evening can last as long as the Exodus from Egypt itself. There are countless stories, dozens of blessings, and far too many handwashings while the meal turns cold. With the hilarious parody Haggadah For This We Left Egypt?, good Jews everywhere will no longer have to sit (and sleep) through a lengthy and boring Seder. So gather all the Jews in your life (even the few who don’t appear to be long-suffering) and settle in for a fun way to pass the time while waiting for Elijah to show up. AMY CHOZICK | CHASING HILLARY THURSDAY, JULY 19 | 7:00pm For a decade, award-winning New York Times journalist Amy Chozick chronicled Hillary Clinton’s pursuit of the presidency. Chozick’s front- row seat, initially covering Clinton’s imploding 2008 campaign, and then her assignment to “The Hillary Beat” ahead of the 2016 election, took her to 48 states and set off a nearly ten-years-long journey in which the formative years of her twenties and thirties became – both personally and professionally – intrinsically intertwined to Clinton’s presidential ambitions. ABIGAIL POGREBIN | MY JEWISH YEAR: 18 HOLIDAYS, ONE WONDERING JEW THURSDAY, JULY 26 | 7:00pm My Jewish Year travels through this calendar’s signposts with candor, humor, and a trove of information, capturing the arc of Jewish observance through the eyes of a relatable, wandering and wondering Jew. The chapters are interspersed with brief reflections from prominent rabbis and Jewish thinkers. Maybe you’re seeking an accessible, digestible roadmap for Jewish life. Maybe you’d appreciate a fresh exploration of what you’ve mastered. Whatever your motivation, you’ll be educated, entertained, and inspired by Pogrebin’s unusual journey―and by My Jewish Year. JONATHAN WEISMAN | (((SEMITISM))): BEING JEWISH IN AMERICA IN THE AGE OF TRUMP THURSDAY, AUGUST 2 | 7:00pm In (((Semitism))), Weisman explores the disconnect between his own sense of Jewish identity and the expectations of his detractors and supporters. He delves into the rise of the Alt-Right, their roots in older anti-Semitic organizations, the odd ancientness of their grievances—cloaked as they are in contemporary, techy hipsterism—and their aims—to spread hate in a palatable way through a political structure that has so suddenly become tolerant of their views. JOY BEHAR | THE GREAT GASBAG: AN A-TO-Z STUDY GUIDE TO SURVIVING TRUMP WORLD THURSDAY, AUGUST 9 | 7:00pm Structured as an A-Z guide, Joy Behar, joined by New York Times bestselling humor author Larry Amoros, offers much-needed doses of levity and humor for everyone determined to #resist. With a major network television profile and a social media audience in the millions, this fearlessly confident star has a powerful platform to entertain Americans of all stripes. KATE SIEGEL | MOTHER, CAN YOU NOT? THURSDAY, AUGUST 16 | 7:00pm No one understands the delicate mother-daughter dynamic better than Kate Siegel—her own mother drove her so crazy that she decided to broadcast their hilarious conversations on Instagram. Soon, hundreds of thousands of people were following their daily text exchanges, eager to see what outrageous thing Kate’s mom would do next. Based on the wildly popular Instagram account @CrazyJewishMom, Kate Siegel's essay collection, Mother, Can You NOT?, pays tribute to the woman who invented the concept of drone parenting. A.J. JACOBS | IT'S ALL RELATIVE: ADVENTURES UP AND DOWN THE WORLD'S FAMILY TREE THURSDAY, AUGUST 30 | 7:00pm New York Times bestselling author of The Know-It-All and The Year of Living Biblically, A.J. Jacobs undergoes a hilarious, heartfelt quest to understand what constitutes family—where it begins and how far it goes—and attempts to untangle the true meaning of the “Family of Humankind.” A.J. Jacobs has received some strange emails over the years, but this note was perhaps the strangest: “You don’t know me, but I’m your eighth cousin. And we have over 80,000 relatives of yours in our database.” Who are these people, A.J. wondered, and how do I find them? So began Jacobs’s three-year adventure to help build the biggest family tree in history... WWW.JCOH.ORG

20 SUMMER INSTITUTE 2018 DEDICATE A NEW HIGH HOLY DAY PRAYER BOOK For the last few decades, our community has used the Gates of Repentance High Holy Day Prayer Book. When it was first published in 1970s, it represented exciting and progressive liturgical innovation. However, today it is beginning to feel dated. This year we are introducing, Mishkan HaNefesh, a new High Holy Day machzor that seeks to breathe new life into celebrating Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Mishkan HaNefesh offers our community a wealth of resources for finding new meaning in these High Holy Days. Through updated translations, readings, and poetry, as well as easily accessible transliteration and new liturgical innovations, Mishkan HaNefesh will help guide our Jewish Center of the Hamptons in our worship this fall, and for many High Holy Days to come. We hope you will take the opportunity to dedicate our prayer books with a book plate ($180 per book).
